Do not move your Ethereum assets for quantum protection today. Ethereum.org’s guidance, last updated September 8, 2026, says no current quantum computer can threaten Ethereum’s cryptography and that users need to do nothing now. When Ethereum’s post-quantum account features are deployed, the safe process will be to update a supported wallet, verify the network feature and recovery path, and follow the wallet’s official migration flow. That migration may change an account’s authentication method rather than simply sending ETH and tokens to another address.
No consumer wallet is established by the current official material as a ready-to-use quantum-resistant Ethereum solution. Protocol proposals, standards and roadmap dates are not the same as a live Ethereum mainnet feature.
What you should do now
The correct action in October 2026 is to keep using your wallet normally, maintain secure backups, and monitor official Ethereum and wallet-provider announcements. Do not transfer ETH, tokens or NFTs to a wallet advertised as quantum-resistant unless Ethereum has activated the relevant protocol feature and the wallet’s implementation and recovery instructions are independently verifiable.
Recommended Free Tools
Ethereum.org’s current user guidance is explicit: “Right now: nothing. Your funds are safe. No quantum computer today can threaten Ethereum’s cryptography.” That statement describes the present threat level, not a permanent guarantee. Cryptographic migration is being planned because sufficiently capable quantum computers could eventually weaken several primitives used by Ethereum.

The eventual process could look different from an ordinary transfer. A normal transfer moves assets from one account to another and leaves the original account’s authentication method unchanged. Ethereum’s direction is account-level signature agility: an account could change the scheme used to authorize transactions, potentially preserving its address and asset relationships. Whether that is possible, and exactly how users trigger it, depends on the protocol feature that eventually ships.
Why quantum resistance matters for Ethereum accounts
Externally owned accounts use ECDSA today
A standard externally owned account, or EOA, authorizes transactions with an ECDSA signature using the secp256k1 curve. Ethereum.org explains that an account which has sent a transaction exposes its public key on-chain. A future quantum computer capable of breaking the relevant elliptic-curve cryptography could use that public key to derive a private key and forge authorization.
This is a future risk mechanism, not evidence that an exposed account is currently compromised. Quantum computers available today cannot perform that attack against Ethereum. An account that has never sent a transaction has a different exposure profile because its public key is not revealed in the same way, but that distinction does not create a reason to perform an unsupported migration now.
Other Ethereum cryptography also needs work
Ethereum.org identifies several additional areas requiring post-quantum research:
- ECDSA signatures for ordinary user accounts.
- BLS signatures used by consensus-layer validators.
- KZG polynomial commitments used in Ethereum’s data-availability machinery.
- Some zero-knowledge proof systems and their underlying assumptions.
Moving an EOA to a different address would not, by itself, solve every protocol-layer issue. A complete transition must cover execution, consensus and data layers, which is why the Ethereum Foundation’s roadmap treats this as a multi-stage protocol project rather than a wallet-shopping decision.
How close is a quantum attack?
Ethereum.org reports a March 2026 estimate from Google Quantum AI of roughly 1,200 logical qubits for breaking 256-bit elliptic-curve cryptography. The page presents this as an estimate of scale, not as a current capability or attack schedule. It also reports that NIST anticipates deprecating ECDSA by 2030 and disallowing it by 2035. Those dates are standards-policy context; they are not Ethereum migration deadlines.
What a future migration may change
Authentication migration versus sending assets

| Design | What changes | What the user must verify |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary transfer | Assets move to a different address; the original account remains unchanged. | Destination address, network, token support, fees and recovery of the new account. |
| Account-authentication migration | The account’s authorized signature scheme changes, potentially without moving every asset individually. | Protocol activation, supported signature scheme, transaction type, wallet recovery and compatibility with contracts and applications. |
Do not assume that a wallet’s use of the words “quantum-safe” or “post-quantum” means it can perform the second design. The distinction must be confirmed in Ethereum’s activated protocol documentation and the wallet’s signed release notes.
Account abstraction as the likely path
The Ethereum Foundation’s February 18, 2026 protocol-priorities update describes native account abstraction as a user-experience priority and a natural migration path away from ECDSA-based authentication. That update connected the work to proposals including EIP-8141, known as Frame Transactions, and described Hegotá as planned later in 2026.
The September 7, 2026 priorities update places Ethereum in Hegotá scoping and says client teams could realistically begin implementation in late Q4 2026. These are roadmap statements, not evidence that a user-facing migration switch is active on mainnet. Fork scope, transaction formats, wallet interfaces and dates can change.
EIP-8164 is a proposal, not a wallet instruction
EIP-8164, Native Key Delegation for EOAs, proposes ML-DSA-44 as an initial native post-quantum key scheme. Its design describes a single Type 0x06 transaction that would atomically change an account’s authentication scheme and allows new accounts to be created directly under ML-DSA-44.

Treat the proposal as technical design material until an activated network specification and a supported wallet release say otherwise.
Roadmap dates and what they mean
| Date | Source and status | Meaning for wallet users |
|---|---|---|
| August 2024 | NIST finalized FIPS 203, FIPS 204 and FIPS 205, as summarized by ethereum.org. | Post-quantum standards exist; no Ethereum wallet feature is implied. |
| February 18, 2026 | Ethereum Foundation protocol-priorities update. | Account abstraction and related work were identified as priorities; the described fork plans were provisional. |
| March 2026 | Ethereum.org reports Google Quantum AI’s roughly 1,200-logical-qubit estimate. | A reported threat-scale estimate, not an available attack or migration date. |
| September 7, 2026 | Ethereum Foundation priorities update. | The Foundation targets post-quantum resistance across Ethereum L1’s execution, consensus and data layers by December 2029, while calling the schedule aggressive. |
| Late Q4 2026 | Implementation timing described by the September update. | Client teams may begin implementation; this does not establish mainnet activation or wallet availability. |
| December 2029 | Ethereum Foundation target. | A planning target, not a guaranteed delivery date or a prediction of when a quantum attack will occur. |
| As early as 2030 | Planning assumption in the September update. | The Foundation is deliberately planning around an aggressive Q-day scenario; sequencing and safeguards remain subject to change. |
The Post-Quantum Security team describes execution-layer migration as gradual and opt-in, with post-quantum signature verification, transactions and aggregation on a living roadmap. It says the roadmap reflects rough directional consensus and can change as research, implementation and governance evolve.
How to prepare without making a risky move
1. Inventory what you control
Record which accounts hold ETH, fungible tokens, NFTs and other on-chain positions. Note whether each position is controlled directly by an EOA, a multisignature arrangement, a contract wallet or an application-specific account. An eventual migration feature may support these categories differently, so an inventory prevents you from assuming that one button covers every asset.

2. Maintain ordinary wallet security
- Keep seed phrases and private keys offline and protected from unauthorized access.
- Use the wallet’s established backup and recovery process; do not re-enter a seed phrase into a website claiming to perform a quantum upgrade.
- Keep a written record of account addresses and networks, but never record secret material in an unsecured document.
- Install wallet software only from the provider’s verified distribution channel.
A generic hardware wallet or seed-storage product does not become a quantum-resistant Ethereum migration solution merely because it keeps keys offline. Hardware can reduce ordinary key-theft risk, while the future migration described here depends on Ethereum protocol support and wallet software that can use the activated signature scheme.

3. Follow primary Ethereum updates
Check Ethereum.org’s post-quantum guidance, Ethereum Foundation protocol updates and the Post-Quantum Security team’s living roadmap close to the time you intend to act. A proposal number, conference presentation or social-media announcement is not enough. Look for an explicit network activation, supported transaction format, wallet release and recovery documentation.
4. Keep applications and contact details current
Record the decentralized applications, exchanges, bridges and custodial services that interact with each account. A change in account authentication may require application updates even if the account address remains familiar. Services that do not support the activated account type may need a separate migration path.
Conditional procedure: moving assets after an official feature ships
The following procedure is intentionally gated. Do not execute it until Ethereum has activated the relevant feature and your wallet provider publishes matching instructions. The exact menu labels, transaction type and fee behavior cannot be known before deployment.
Step 1: Verify mainnet activation
- Read the Ethereum Foundation or Ethereum client release notice that identifies the network, fork or protocol feature.
- Confirm that the feature is active on the network you use, rather than only specified in an EIP, available on a testnet or enabled in a developer build.
- Check the activation block, epoch or other official network marker and compare it with your wallet’s network status.
- Reject any request to “migrate” before the activation condition is met.
Step 2: Update the wallet through its verified channel
- Install the wallet version named in the provider’s official migration documentation.
- Confirm the application displays the expected network and account address.
- Read the release notes for supported signature schemes, recovery behavior, transaction types and known limitations.
- Do not approve a transaction solely because a pop-up says it is a quantum upgrade; inspect the destination, method and permissions in the wallet’s normal confirmation view.
Step 3: Back up and test recovery first
- Confirm that your existing account can be restored from its documented backup.
- Read how the new authentication key or delegation is backed up. A post-quantum key may not use the same export format as an ECDSA key.
- Identify the recovery process if the new signer is lost, corrupted or unavailable.
- If the official documentation provides a testnet or low-value rehearsal, use it before migrating valuable assets. A testnet exercise is evidence about workflow, not proof that mainnet balances are recoverable.
Step 4: Determine whether the flow is in-place or a transfer
The wallet should state whether it is changing the account’s authentication scheme or creating a new account and sending assets. For an in-place change, verify that the account address, nonce handling and contract permissions remain compatible. For a transfer, verify every destination address and the assets that must be sent separately. Never infer the design from a button label.
Step 5: Review the signature scheme and security evidence
- Identify the exact scheme supported by the wallet and the Ethereum feature.
- Check whether the scheme is an activated protocol choice or merely an experimental option.
- Read the provider’s independent security review, vulnerability disclosures and recovery documentation.
- Confirm that the wallet explains how signatures are generated, stored, backed up and rotated.
NIST’s finalized standards include FIPS 203 ML-KEM for key encapsulation, FIPS 204 ML-DSA for digital signatures and FIPS 205 SLH-DSA for hash-based digital signatures. A wallet may reference one of these standards without supporting the Ethereum transaction format or account semantics required for migration. Standardization and Ethereum compatibility are separate checks.
Step 6: Authorize the migration or transfer
Use only the wallet’s documented transaction flow. Check the network, account, fee, nonce, destination and requested permissions on the final confirmation screen. If the wallet shows an atomic account-authentication operation, verify that it is the protocol-defined operation and not an arbitrary contract call. If it shows ordinary transfers, confirm that each token, NFT or other asset is included and that the destination account supports it.

Step 7: Confirm on-chain results
- Wait for the wallet’s stated confirmation threshold.
- Inspect the transaction in a trusted block explorer or node interface and verify the actual result, not only the wallet’s success message.
- Confirm the account’s authentication state, balance and relevant token or NFT ownership.
- Reconnect essential applications only through their normal interfaces and review permissions before signing again.
Step 8: Preserve the old recovery path until the transition is complete
Do not destroy an old seed phrase, device or signer immediately after a migration. Keep it protected until the official recovery window, application compatibility checks and all asset verifications are complete. If the feature changes authentication in place, the old key may be needed for recovery or for assets that have not yet been upgraded. The wallet’s documentation should define when, if ever, retiring the old signer is safe.
How to evaluate a future quantum-resistant wallet
There are no currently evidenced consumer wallet options to rank for this specific Ethereum migration. When providers begin shipping support, compare them on the following points rather than on marketing language.

Asset-specific checks before you sign
ETH and ordinary tokens
Determine whether the protocol operation updates the account that owns the balances or whether you must send each balance to a new account. If transfers are required, account for gas and token-specific transaction behavior. Never assume that a migration of the controlling account automatically moves balances held by a contract.
NFTs and application positions
List NFTs, marketplace approvals, lending positions, liquidity positions and other application relationships separately. Ownership may be recorded in contracts, while permissions may remain associated with an address or signer. The wallet’s migration documentation should explain which relationships survive an in-place authentication change and which require application-specific action.
Contract wallets and multisignature accounts
A contract-controlled account is not the same as a standard EOA. Its upgrade or signer-rotation rules come from the contract and its participating signers. Do not apply an EOA migration instruction to a multisignature or contract wallet unless the wallet and contract documentation explicitly support it.
Layer-2 and bridged assets
Check each network separately. A feature activated on Ethereum L1 may not be available at the same time on a layer-2 network, bridge or custodial service. Confirm where the asset is held and which chain’s account-authentication rules govern the transaction before signing.

A wallet claims quantum resistance before protocol activation
Stop. A software label cannot activate an Ethereum protocol feature. Disconnect the site, revoke any unapproved permissions through established security procedures, and return to the wallet’s official documentation and Ethereum’s network status.

You are asked for your seed phrase to migrate
Do not provide it to a website, support agent or form. Legitimate wallet software may require local access to a signer, but an unsolicited request to type a seed phrase into a web page is a theft warning. Use the wallet’s documented recovery process instead.
The wallet supports the signature scheme but not your assets
Pause before signing. A cryptographic scheme can be technically supported while token standards, NFTs, contract wallets or applications remain incompatible. Obtain a documented asset-by-asset plan or wait for the relevant application to add support.
The transaction fails or remains pending
Do not repeatedly resubmit blindly. Record the transaction hash, network, nonce and error message. Check the official release notes for required client versions, fee rules and known limitations. A failed migration should not be followed by an unsolicited “recovery” transaction from a stranger.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →You migrated but an application cannot recognize the account
Do not move assets again until you understand whether the issue is an application update, account-type limitation or incomplete migration. Use the application’s verified support channel and the wallet’s compatibility notes. Keep the old recovery materials protected while the issue is investigated.
What would count as genuine availability?
A credible consumer migration announcement should contain all of the following:
- An Ethereum network activation or finalized protocol specification identifying the supported account and signature behavior.
- A wallet release that names the supported network, transaction format and signature scheme.
- Instructions for backup, recovery, key loss and account restoration.
- A clear explanation of whether migration is in place or requires transfers.
- Compatibility information for tokens, NFTs, contract wallets, layer-2 networks and applications.
- Security-review, vulnerability-reporting and incident-response information.
- Warnings about fees, irreversible steps and the period during which the old signer must be retained.
Until those pieces exist, a proposal, standards document, hardware device or promotional claim is not a substitute for an activated Ethereum feature.
The practical answer
There is no safe transaction sequence to execute today because Ethereum has not established a consumer quantum-resistant migration feature in the cited official guidance. Keep your assets in their existing secure setup, protect your backups, and avoid products that imply an unsupported migration. When the protocol and a wallet genuinely support the transition, verify activation first, determine whether authentication changes in place or assets must be transferred, rehearse recovery where officially supported, migrate carefully, and verify every balance and application relationship afterward.
