Samsung Smart Switch is the main way to move supported data to a new Galaxy phone or tablet. Use a wireless phone-to-phone transfer for most Galaxy and Android upgrades, a compatible USB connection when you want a wired route, or a computer backup when the phones cannot connect directly. iPhone owners can transfer by cable where their device and software support it, or import selected data from iCloud.

No migration method creates a perfect clone. Account-synced information may appear only after you sign in, and some private, protected, or app-specific data needs its own migration procedure. Keep the old phone until you have checked the new one.

Choose the right Samsung transfer method

Smart Switch transfers data from Android and iOS devices to a Galaxy destination. The available categories depend on the source phone, operating-system version, Galaxy model, connection type, and region. Select the route that matches both phones rather than assuming every method works for every device.

Source phone Route What you need Important qualification
Samsung Galaxy or other Android Wireless Smart Switch Smart Switch on both phones, Wi-Fi enabled, and both phones nearby Screen labels vary by One UI and device version. Keep both phones powered while the transfer runs.
Samsung Galaxy or other Android USB Smart Switch A cable that supports data and, if the ports do not match, a compatible USB adapter Connector requirements depend on the two phones. Check the actual ports before buying an accessory.
iPhone or iPad Direct cable transfer A compatible cable or adapter and Smart Switch on the Galaxy Availability depends on the iPhone, Galaxy, operating-system versions, and Samsung’s current support for that combination.
iPhone or iPad iCloud import Apple Account credentials and access to verification Only content available to Smart Switch through the iCloud route can be imported.
Any supported source Computer backup and restore A computer, a backup connection, and enough space for the backup Use this as a fallback when direct transfer is impractical. Features vary by model and platform.
Supported Galaxy devices External-storage backup Compatible removable storage or another supported storage device Support varies by Galaxy model and the categories selected for backup.

Samsung documents USB transfer and possible connector needs, but a cable is not required for wireless migration. A USB-C cable also is not automatically a data cable: confirm that the cable and any adapter support data transfer for your phones.

Before you start: protect the old phone

  • Charge both phones. For wireless transfer, leave them close together and connect them to chargers if needed. Do not let either phone shut down during copying.
  • Update or open Smart Switch. Install or update the app when your phone prompts you, and use the current version supported by your Galaxy model.
  • Free enough storage on the Galaxy. The Samsung UK guidance for its described Smart Switch use specifies at least 500 MB of internal storage. Treat that as support guidance for the applicable devices, not a universal amount for every transfer; the data you select may require substantially more space.
  • Know your account credentials. Have your Google, Samsung, Apple, email, and other account passwords available. Verification codes may be required, especially for an iCloud import.
  • Keep the old phone accessible. Do not reset, encrypt away, trade in, or give away the source phone until you have inspected critical information on the Galaxy.
  • List special cases. Make a note of authentication apps, banking apps, work-managed data, Secure Folder content, chat histories, downloaded media, and eSIM service. These often need separate action.
  • Check network and permissions. Enable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when Smart Switch requests them, unlock both phones, and approve connection or access prompts.

Transfer from a Galaxy or Android phone wirelessly

Wireless Smart Switch is the simplest choice when both phones are available and you do not need a cable. The wording can differ slightly across models and software versions; choose the equivalent label shown on your screen.

  1. On the new Galaxy, open Smart Switch. During initial setup, you may reach it through Accounts and backup and Transfer data for device setup.
  2. Choose Receive on this phone, then select Galaxy/Android as the source platform when asked.
  3. On the old phone, open Smart Switch and choose Send from this phone.
  4. On the new phone, select Wireless as the connection method. Follow the pairing prompt and tap Allow on the source phone when it requests permission.
  5. Review the categories Smart Switch finds. Select the contacts, messages, call history, calendar items, photos, videos, files, settings, and other supported content you want to bring over. The categories displayed are determined by the connected phones.
  6. Tap Transfer and leave both phones close together and unlocked as requested. You can keep them connected to chargers during a wireless transfer.
  7. When Smart Switch reports completion, tap Done on the relevant screen. Keep the source phone intact while you check the results.

If the phones cannot see each other, close Smart Switch on both devices and reopen it, unlock the source phone, enable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and move the phones within a few inches of each other. A failed wireless attempt does not erase the source data; you can retry or use a cable.

Use a USB cable for a wired transfer

A wired connection can be useful when wireless pairing is unavailable or when you prefer a direct connection. Smart Switch still controls the transfer; the cable only provides the link.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Unlock both phones and open Smart Switch on each.
  2. Connect the phones with a compatible data cable. Use an adapter if one phone has a different connector. Samsung documents some Lightning-to-USB-C and USB-C-to-USB-C combinations that can connect without a separate adapter, but the correct setup depends on the exact phones.
  3. On the Galaxy, choose Receive on this phone. On the source, choose Send from this phone, then approve any USB or access prompt.
  4. Review the content list, clear categories you do not want, and start the transfer.
  5. Keep the cable connected until Smart Switch confirms completion. Then inspect the Galaxy before disconnecting and resetting the old phone.

Do not assume a charging-only cable will work. If Smart Switch does not detect the source, try another cable known to support data, check both connectors for debris or damage, and confirm that the phones support the selected Smart Switch route.

Transfer from iPhone to Samsung

There are two documented Smart Switch paths for an iPhone: a direct connection and an iCloud import. The right choice depends on your iPhone’s software, the Galaxy’s software, the content you need, and local availability.

Direct iPhone-to-Galaxy connection

Connect the iPhone and Galaxy with the compatible cable or adapter, open Smart Switch on the Galaxy, choose Receive data, select iPhone/iPad, and follow the prompts to authorize the iPhone and select content. The exact screens can change with device software.

Samsung has described a newer direct iOS route with narrow requirements: iOS 26.6 or later on the iPhone and Android 17 with One UI 9 or later on the Galaxy. Samsung’s India product information also says that route excludes mainland China and that eSIM availability varies by carrier. These are version- and region-specific requirements, not a promise that every iPhone can use the newest method. Check current Samsung instructions for your country and models before relying on it.

Import iPhone data from iCloud

  1. On the Galaxy, open Smart Switch and choose Receive data, then iPhone/iPad.
  2. Select the iCloud option.
  3. Sign in with the Apple Account used on the iPhone and complete any verification step.
  4. Review the content Smart Switch can access through iCloud and select what to import.
  5. Start the import and leave the Galaxy connected to a reliable network. When it finishes, sign in to accounts on the Galaxy and verify the imported content.

An iCloud import is not a full image of the iPhone. It is limited to data available through that Smart Switch workflow, and it requires account access. If a category is missing from the selection screen, look for an app-specific export or a direct cable route rather than assuming it will appear later.

WhatsApp and other chat histories

Samsung’s UK guidance says some app data, including WhatsApp chats, does not move through the general Smart Switch process. A separate Samsung iPhone-to-Galaxy page says a cable is needed for WhatsApp transfer and describes the newer iOS method only for the specific versions listed above. Follow the current WhatsApp and Samsung instructions for your exact phones before erasing the iPhone; chat migration rules can change with app and operating-system updates.

Use a computer or external storage as a fallback

Samsung also describes backing up a phone to a computer and restoring that backup to a new Galaxy. This route is useful when the phones cannot remain connected, when you want a safety copy before experimenting, or when a direct transfer repeatedly fails.

  1. Install the supported Samsung transfer software on the computer, connect the source phone, and create a backup of the categories the software offers.
  2. Safely disconnect the old phone, connect the new Galaxy, and choose the restore option.
  3. Review the categories before restoring, then allow the process to finish.
  4. Open the restored content on the Galaxy and sign in to accounts and apps that require authentication.

External-storage backup is another supported option on some Galaxy devices. The available categories and storage requirements vary by model, so confirm compatibility in the phone’s Smart Switch screens before depending on it as your only copy.

What Smart Switch transfers—and what it may not

The safest way to think about Smart Switch is supported-content migration, not a bit-for-bit clone. Samsung’s content guidance lists personal information, media, documents, settings, and apps for some transfer paths, while also identifying exclusions.

Category Typical handling What to verify
Contacts, calendar, and email May be copied when stored locally or supported by the selected route. Contacts and calendars synchronized to an online account may reappear after you add that account instead of being copied by Smart Switch. Compare counts and recent entries.
Photos, videos, music, and documents Supported local media and files can be selected for transfer. Check folders, albums, downloads, recordings, and files stored on removable media. DRM-protected downloads may require a fresh download or app sign-in.
Messages and call history Often offered for supported Android-to-Galaxy paths. Open older conversations and search for important threads; availability can differ by source platform and software.
Apps Smart Switch may transfer or help reinstall supported apps. Private app storage, login sessions, encrypted databases, and app-specific data may not transfer. Launch critical apps and complete their own recovery process.
Cloud-synced services Usually return when you sign in to the same account. Confirm that synchronization has completed and that the account is the intended one.
Secure, managed, or protected data May be excluded or subject to policy. Check Secure Folder, work profiles, mobile-device-management data, authentication apps, banking apps, and password managers individually.
eSIM and cellular service Not a general Smart Switch data category. Carrier support varies. Follow the carrier’s activation or transfer process before canceling service on the old phone.

Because support changes with the connected device, do not treat a missing category as proof that the phone is damaged. It may be unsupported for that source, route, region, or software version.

Verify the Galaxy before wiping the old phone

Use a deliberate check rather than opening only the home screen. Mark each item complete on the new phone:

  • Sign in to Google, Samsung, Apple-related services you still use, email, and other accounts; confirm that expected contacts and calendars have synchronized.
  • Open the Gallery and file manager. Check recent and older photos, videos, screenshots, downloads, recordings, documents, and any custom folders.
  • Open the messaging app and inspect both recent and older conversations. Test sending and receiving a message after cellular service is active.
  • Launch banking, authentication, password-manager, work, health, and other high-consequence apps. Re-register security keys or two-factor authentication when the app requires it.
  • Check Secure Folder, work profile, notes, alarms, device settings, and browser bookmarks if they matter to your routine.
  • Confirm that your phone number, voicemail, eSIM or physical SIM, and carrier service work. Carrier eSIM support is not universal.
  • Compare the old and new phones for any category Smart Switch reported as skipped, unavailable, or requiring sign-in.
  • Create an independent backup of irreplaceable photos, documents, and chat exports before resetting the old phone.

Only after these checks should you factory-reset, trade in, or hand over the old phone. If a required app or account has its own migration instructions, follow those instructions even when the general Smart Switch transfer completed successfully.

Troubleshoot common Smart Switch problems

The phones do not detect each other

Unlock both devices, reopen Smart Switch, enable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, accept permission prompts, and place the phones close together. If wireless pairing still fails, restart both phones or switch to a compatible data cable.

The transfer stops or reports insufficient space

Canceling a transfer does not normally remove the source phone’s data. Free space on the Galaxy by removing unneeded downloads, choose fewer categories, and retry. The 500 MB figure in Samsung’s UK support guidance is a minimum for that described use, not a guarantee that a large photo or video library will fit.

A cable is connected but nothing happens

Try a cable verified for data, reverse the connection if the cable permits it, check for a USB notification on the source, and approve access. Confirm the adapter and connector match both phones. If the source is an iPhone, use the cable arrangement supported for that iPhone-to-Galaxy combination.

Some contacts, calendars, or files are missing

Determine whether they were stored locally, on a removable card, or in a synchronized account. Add the correct account to the Galaxy and allow synchronization; then inspect the original phone or cloud service for locally stored items that were not selected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An app opens as if it were new

Sign in with the same account, use the app’s restore or export feature, and check its own migration documentation. Private app storage, encrypted content, work-managed information, and authentication credentials may be intentionally excluded from general Smart Switch transfers.

WhatsApp history is absent

Do not reset the old phone. Check the current WhatsApp transfer requirements and Samsung’s instructions for your exact iPhone or Android version. For the Samsung route that specifies WhatsApp over a cable, wireless Smart Switch alone is not a substitute.

The newest iPhone transfer option is unavailable

Check both operating-system versions and your region. The newer Samsung-described path requires iOS 26.6 or later with Android 17 and One UI 9 or later, and Samsung’s India information excludes mainland China. If your devices do not meet those conditions, use the supported cable or iCloud route instead.

Bottom line for a safe phone switch

Start Smart Switch on the new Galaxy, choose wireless, cable, iCloud, or backup/restore according to the source phone and available connection, and transfer only the categories you need. Then verify accounts, media, messages, security-sensitive apps, chats, and cellular service while the old phone is still available. That final audit is what prevents a successful-looking transfer from becoming a data loss event.
