There are two safe routes: if the old wallet still works, send bitcoin to a verified receive address in the new wallet; if it does not, restore access using the original wallet’s recovery material in compatible, official wallet software. Never share a recovery phrase or private key. Before sending, check the complete destination address and wallet compatibility—an on-chain transfer generally cannot be reversed.

First identify who controls the wallet

An old “wallet” may be self-custody software or hardware, or an account with an exchange or another custodian. With self-custody, the private keys control spending; a phone or computer is only one way to use them. A recovery phrase or backup may restore access, depending on how the wallet was configured. With a custodian, the provider controls the keys, so move bitcoin through its withdrawal process and secure the account using the provider’s official instructions. Bitcoin.org explains the distinction and the responsibility self-custody places on the holder in Some things you need to know.

Do not send a phrase, private key, wallet file, or password to someone offering help. Bitcoin.org warns that “no legitimate person, business, or support team will ever ask you for your seed phrase or private key” in its Avoid Scams guidance. Enter recovery material only when necessary, in the verified official wallet software you intend to use.

Choose the right route

Situation What to do Main checks
The old self-custody wallet opens and can send Set up a receive address in the new wallet, then send an on-chain transaction from the old wallet. Confirm the full address, address-type compatibility, fee, and that enough bitcoin remains to pay the fee.
The old wallet will not open, but you have its recovery material Use compatible wallet software and the original wallet’s official recovery instructions. Check wallet type, derivation settings, address type, any extra passphrase, and any multisignature setup.
The wallet is an exchange or other custodial account Use the provider’s official withdrawal process to send to a wallet address you control. Secure the account and follow the provider’s current network and withdrawal instructions.
The old self-custody wallet is inaccessible and required secrets are lost There may be no way to spend the funds. Do not trust anyone promising recovery in exchange for your phrase or private key.

If the old wallet still opens, send to a new wallet

  1. Set up the destination wallet. Install or open it using its verified official source. Choose its receive function and generate a Bitcoin receive address. Confirm that it supports the address or script type used by the old wallet; support varies, and older wallets may use legacy addresses. Bitcoin.org’s Choose your wallet guidance describes compatibility considerations.
  2. Verify the destination. Check the entire address against the destination wallet’s receive screen—not just the first and last characters. Scanning a QR code or using another trustworthy transfer method can reduce transcription errors, but visually confirm the complete destination when the wallet allows it. Do not blindly reuse an address copied from an unfamiliar transaction history: address-poisoning scams use lookalike addresses.
  3. Consider a small test transfer. If practical, send a small amount first, then check that the transaction appears in the destination wallet and is confirmed before sending the remainder. A test is an extra transaction and may incur another fee; it is not a guarantee and does not replace checking the address and compatibility.
  4. Send the remaining balance. Leave enough in the source wallet to pay its network fee. Review the destination address and the wallet’s fee estimate immediately before confirming.

If the old wallet will not open, restore it carefully

Look for the original recovery phrase, encrypted wallet backup, hardware device, or other recovery material documented for that wallet. A wallet backup may restore access, but a phrase is not a universal import format: compatible wallet software and settings matter. Bitcoin.org says most modern wallets are deterministic, so a single phrase backup can restore past and future addresses, but that general statement does not mean every wallet uses the same recovery method.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
  • Use only the destination wallet’s verified official recovery instructions and confirm it supports the original wallet type and settings.
  • Check whether the original wallet used a particular derivation path or address type, an additional passphrase, or a multisignature arrangement.
  • If the restored wallet appears empty, stop. A wrong account path, passphrase, or configuration can make the expected balance appear absent. Consult the original wallet’s official documentation; do not paste the phrase into a random recovery website.
  • Do not confuse an encrypted wallet’s password with its recovery phrase. Bitcoin.org notes that forgotten wallet passwords may have very limited recovery options in its Securing your wallet guidance.

If a self-custody wallet cannot be opened and its required keys or recovery material are permanently lost, the bitcoin may be permanently inaccessible. Bitcoin.org states: “If you permanently lose access to your wallet—for example by losing your recovery phrase—your funds are gone permanently.” Its guidance also explains that developers, miners, wallet providers, or exchanges cannot recover funds permanently lost from a self-custodied wallet.

Understand fees and confirmation before sending

Bitcoin transaction fees vary with the transaction’s data size and demand for limited block space, not simply with the amount being sent. Bitcoin.org puts it plainly: “You pay for the size of your transaction in the block, not for the amount of bitcoin you send.” Fees are commonly quoted in satoshis per virtual byte (sat/vB). As an approximate size example—not a fee quote—Bitcoin.org gives about 140 virtual bytes for a simple transaction with one input and two outputs; transactions with more inputs or outputs can be larger. One bitcoin is 100,000,000 satoshis.

A lower fee can mean a longer wait for confirmation. Bitcoin.org says that when a payment is not urgent, choosing a lower fee and waiting can be reasonable. Some wallets support Replace-by-Fee (RBF), but controls and replacement procedures vary; check the wallet’s current estimate and documentation before sending. Bitcoin.org says an unconfirmed transaction may eventually confirm or be dropped; if it is dropped, the funds remain spendable because the transaction did not leave the wallet. That is not a promise about how a particular wallet handles a pending transaction, so use its documented status and recovery flow before attempting a replacement. New blocks are appended roughly every 10 minutes on average, not on a schedule that guarantees a specific transfer’s confirmation time. Protect the wallet and your privacy after the move

  • Protect recovery material. Keep backups safe from theft, damage, and a single point of failure. Bitcoin.org recommends secure locations and durable physical storage; the right backup procedure depends on the wallet. Never photograph or expose a phrase casually, and never enter it into an untrusted site.
  • Consider future storage separately. A hardware wallet or durable physical backup medium may be an optional improvement for future security. Buying a device cannot restore a wallet if its required secrets are already lost, and a device does not make an exposed phrase safe.
  • Remember the privacy trade-off. Bitcoin transactions are public and permanent. Moving or combining funds can link activity on-chain; it does not make the funds anonymous.
