If only your Bitcoin public key or address was exposed, an attacker normally cannot spend the bitcoin from it. You can still retire that address for privacy and operational safety: create a new wallet-controlled receiving address, back up the wallet, verify the destination on a trusted device, send the funds, and wait for confirmation. Treat an exposed private key, recovery phrase, or extended private key as a much more serious compromise and move the funds to a completely new wallet immediately.
First determine what was exposed
The correct response depends on the exact data that became visible. Bitcoin uses public information for receiving and verifying payments, while spending requires private key material. These terms are not interchangeable.
Ordinary public key
An ordinary public key is designed to be shared. It participates in Bitcoin transaction verification and does not, by itself, disclose the corresponding private key under Bitcoin’s public-key cryptography assumptions. Seeing it does not give someone the spending authority held by the private key.
Recommended Free Tools
A public key can nevertheless reveal more than you may want to disclose. Once it appears in a transaction, observers can associate it with that transaction and study the related on-chain activity. That is a privacy concern, not the same thing as an attacker possessing a signing secret.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Bitcoin address
An address is a payment destination derived from wallet information. Sharing an address lets someone pay you and lets observers examine activity associated with it on the public blockchain. It does not, by itself, give them the ability to sign a spending transaction.
Address exposure can happen simply by posting an address for donations, sending it in a message, or displaying it in an invoice. You do not need to treat every published address as an emergency, but you should stop reusing it when privacy or operational separation matters.
Extended public key
An extended public key, often used by hierarchical deterministic wallets, represents a branch of wallet-derived public keys rather than one isolated key. It can reveal future receiving addresses and transaction relationships, creating a significant privacy problem. It is still different from an extended private key: an extended public key alone is not the same as a secret that can authorize spending.
Because an extended public key can allow repeated address discovery, ask where it was shared and who may retain a copy. A bookkeeping application, server, or person with the key may be able to watch an entire branch of your wallet. Stop distributing it, review integrations that received it, and consider moving funds to a separately generated wallet if you need to break the exposed wallet-level link. The move will not erase transactions already visible on the blockchain.
Private key, recovery phrase, or extended private key
These are spending secrets. A recovery or seed phrase can recreate a wallet, and an extended private key can control a branch of derived keys. If any of these were exposed, assume the wallet is compromised. Do not enter the secret into a website, send it to support, or paste it into a chat. Use a new wallet whose private keys have never been exposed and move the funds there as soon as practical.
Changing a wallet password, hiding an address, or uninstalling an app does not invalidate a copied private key or seed. The person who obtained the secret may be able to sign later, even if the original application is no longer installed. Treat an unauthorized outgoing transaction as evidence that the relevant key material or signing environment is compromised.
Does an exposed public key let someone spend your bitcoin?
Not on the facts established here. Public-key disclosure alone is not equivalent to disclosing the private key. The more immediate consequences are privacy loss and address reuse: observers may be able to connect payments, balances, and spending patterns.

This conclusion changes if the “public key” was actually a private key, seed phrase, wallet backup containing private material, or extended private key. It also changes if an attacker has access to an unlocked wallet, signing device, or account that can approve transactions. When in doubt, stop using the device, preserve your backups, and treat the wallet as potentially compromised rather than testing a secret on an online service.
If only the public information was exposed, moving the coins is a precaution and a privacy choice, not proof that someone can already spend them. You can plan the transfer carefully instead of rushing into an unfamiliar recovery website. If private material was exposed, urgency is justified because another party may be able to spend before you do.

Move the funds to a fresh wallet-controlled address
The following procedure works across self-custody wallets, although button names, fee controls, and address-format support vary. Use the current instructions for your particular wallet for the final send or sweep operation.
- Identify the exposed material. Write down whether the incident involved only an address, an ordinary public key, an extended public key, or any private material. Never copy a secret into this article, a web form, or a support ticket.
- Prepare the destination wallet. Create or select a wallet whose private keys you control. Make its backup before receiving funds. Protect the recovery information in a location that is safe from loss, theft, and unauthorized access. Bitcoin.org warns that losing recovery information can permanently lose self-custodied funds.
- Generate a new receiving address. Open the destination wallet’s receiving function and create a fresh address. Copy it using the wallet’s copy control or, preferably, scan it directly between trusted devices. Do not use the exposed address for new receipts.
- Verify the destination. Compare the complete address shown by the sending wallet with the address displayed by the receiving wallet or a trusted signing device. Check the first and last characters as well as the full value where the interface permits. A malicious application or clipboard-changing malware can substitute an address.
- Send from the current wallet. Use that wallet’s normal send procedure. If the wallet offers a sweep function for a compromised private key, use the wallet’s documented sweep workflow rather than importing the secret into an unfamiliar service. For an address that is merely exposed, a normal spend is sufficient.
- Consider a small test transaction. A test payment can confirm that the destination and receiving setup are correct before sending the remaining balance. It is optional, adds another transaction, and therefore can add another fee and delay. It is not a universal requirement.
- Review the fee and amount. Confirm the amount, destination, and fee on the wallet’s final review screen. Fee controls differ by wallet and network conditions; do not rely on a copied fee estimate from another application.
- Broadcast and record the transaction ID. Save the transaction identifier from the sending wallet if it provides one. Use it to monitor confirmation status without entering private information into a third-party site.
- Wait for confirmations. Bitcoin.org’s guidance, accessed in 2026, lists six confirmations as the minimum recommendation for high-value transfers. That is a general recommendation, not a rule that every wallet, exchange, merchant, or risk policy uses. A receiving service may wait for a different threshold.
- Retire the old address. After the move has confirmed, stop using the exposed address for future receipts. Moving the coins does not delete earlier transactions or make the old address’s history private.
What the transfer costs
The send is an on-chain transaction, so the sending wallet normally charges or estimates a network fee that is paid to miners. The exact amount depends on transaction size, fee conditions, and the wallet’s fee policy; it cannot be stated accurately without the current transaction and network conditions. A test transaction means a second transaction and potentially a second fee. Moving funds between addresses in the same wallet is not free merely because you own both addresses.

Choosing one may involve buying a physical device and learning its backup and verification process, while a self-custodial software wallet may avoid that device purchase. The important question is who controls the keys and whether you can recover them, not whether a particular product was used.
How to verify the new destination safely
Use an address generated by the receiving wallet
Generate the address inside the wallet that will control the destination private keys. Avoid addresses supplied in an unsolicited message, pasted from an unknown document, or generated by a site that asks for your seed phrase. A valid-looking address is not proof that you control it.
Confirm that the address is intended for Bitcoin and belongs to the account you meant to use. Some wallets manage several accounts or networks, and an address displayed in one context may not be the destination you intended in another.
Compare on an independent display
When a hardware signing device or another trusted display is available, compare the address shown there with the address on the sending computer or phone. The purpose is to detect an altered clipboard or compromised screen before authorization. Do not approve a transaction if the trusted display shows a different destination.
Check the network and format
Ensure the sender and receiver are operating on Bitcoin’s network and that both wallets support the address format being used. A wallet may display different formats for different networks or account types. If either wallet reports that the address is invalid or unsupported, stop and consult its official documentation rather than modifying characters yourself.
Do not infer ownership from the spelling or visual appearance of an address. Verification means obtaining it from the receiving wallet and checking the same value immediately before signing. If you regenerate a new address after copying the first one, repeat the comparison; do not assume the earlier check still applies.
Do not assume an address mistake can be reversed
Bitcoin payments are irreversible. If you send to the wrong address, there is no central cancellation mechanism. Recovery depends on the owner of that address voluntarily returning the funds, and an address may have no identifiable owner. This is why destination verification belongs immediately before broadcasting.

What changes when a private key or seed was exposed?
A public-key exposure is primarily a privacy and reuse issue. A private-key or recovery-phrase exposure is a custody emergency.
Create a separate replacement wallet
Use a newly created wallet with newly generated keys. Do not “repair” the compromised wallet by changing a password or deleting the old address; anyone who obtained the underlying private material may still sign transactions. Make and protect the replacement wallet’s backup before transferring funds.
Move every relevant balance
Check all addresses and accounts derived from the compromised key or phrase. If the wallet supports a documented sweep operation, follow that procedure so the destination transaction is signed by the old key and sent to the new wallet. Avoid importing a compromised phrase into a new online wallet merely for convenience.
When the exposed item is an extended private key, pay particular attention to every descendant address in the affected branch. Do not assume that moving one visible address protects other derived addresses. Follow the wallet’s documented account and sweep instructions, and seek qualified technical help without disclosing the secret itself.
Protect the replacement backup
Anyone who obtains the new recovery information can control the replacement wallet. Store it privately, keep more than one secure copy where appropriate, and never photograph, email, or upload it to an untrusted service. Losing it can permanently lock you out of self-custodied funds.

Software wallet or hardware wallet for the destination?
Either can be self-custodial when configured so that you, rather than a service provider, control the private keys. The important differences are how signing keys are exposed, how addresses are verified, and how recovery is performed.
| Consideration | Software wallet | Hardware wallet |
|---|---|---|
| Private-key control | You control the keys when the wallet is self-custodial; verify the wallet’s custody model. | You control the keys when the device is set up as self-custodial and the recovery backup is yours. |
| Address verification | Verify the address in the wallet and, when possible, on an independent trusted display. | The device can provide a separate display for checking the destination before signing. |
| Backup and recovery | Protect the wallet’s recovery information; losing it can permanently lose funds. | Protect the device’s recovery information; the device itself is not a substitute for a backup. |
| Internet exposure | The signing keys may be used on an internet-connected phone or computer, depending on configuration. | The signing device is intended to keep signing keys more isolated from the internet-connected computer. |
| Address-format support | Support varies by application and account type; confirm compatibility before sending. | Support varies by device and companion wallet; confirm compatibility before sending. |
| Usability | Usually convenient for routine payments and quick access. | Usually adds a physical-device setup and an extra verification step. |
Bitcoin.org presents hardware and offline wallets as security options, but no wallet type is universally best. A poorly backed-up hardware wallet can still result in permanent loss, while a carefully secured software wallet may be adequate for a user’s risk and payment needs.
Whichever option you choose, download software or firmware through the provider’s official channel, initialize the wallet yourself, and verify that the backup belongs to the newly created wallet. Never accept a prewritten recovery phrase or send a phrase to someone who claims to be customer support.
Privacy consequences of reusing the exposed address
Moving the balance does not erase the blockchain record. Bitcoin transaction data is public and permanent. Anyone who already associated the exposed address with you may continue to study its incoming and outgoing transactions, balance history, and links to other addresses.

Generate a new receiving address for each future payment when your wallet supports that practice. This limits additional information being attached to the old address, although it cannot undo activity already recorded. An exposed extended public key can make address discovery and wallet-level activity correlation easier, so review which applications and people received it and stop sharing it where possible.
Do not promise yourself complete anonymity simply because the coins moved. The transfer itself links the old and new activity on-chain. The purpose of retiring the address is to prevent additional receipts and reduce future reuse, not to rewrite the ledger.
Common failure modes and how to respond
The receiving wallet rejects the address
Confirm that you copied the entire address, selected the Bitcoin network, and are using a format supported by both wallets. Do not delete or insert characters to make it fit. Generate a new address from the receiving wallet and repeat the verification.
The balance appears lower than expected
Check whether the wallet is showing spendable balance rather than total balance, whether another transaction is unconfirmed, and whether a network fee was deducted. Review the wallet’s transaction history and transaction ID. If the wallet shows an unauthorized outgoing transaction, treat the relevant private material or device as compromised and move any remaining funds to a new wallet immediately.

Keep the transaction ID and check the sending wallet’s status. Network fees and congestion affect confirmation timing, and wallet-specific replacement or fee-acceleration features differ. Use only the wallet’s documented options; never give a stranger your seed phrase in exchange for “help.”
Do not send a second payment simply because a block explorer page has not updated. First determine whether the original transaction is pending, replaced, rejected, or already confirmed in the sending wallet. Any fee-bumping or replacement action should follow that wallet’s documented procedure.
The device may be infected
Do not assume that generating a new address on the same compromised device is safe. Use a trusted, updated environment or a hardware signing device when available, verify the destination on an independent display, and consult the wallet’s official security guidance. If a seed or private key was exposed, create the replacement wallet outside the compromised setup.
You sent to the wrong address
Bitcoin does not provide a general undo function. Preserve the transaction ID and determine whether the destination belongs to a service or person you can contact. Do not pay anyone who promises guaranteed recovery or asks for your recovery phrase.
Checklist before you broadcast
- The exposed item has been identified as public or private.
- The destination wallet is one you control and its backup is protected.
- The receiving address was generated by that wallet and is intended for Bitcoin.
- The full destination was checked on the receiving wallet or trusted signing device.
- The amount, fee, and network are correct.
- You understand that the payment cannot normally be reversed.
- You have saved the transaction ID and know which confirmation threshold the recipient requires.
What the move does—and does not do
The transfer changes where the unspent bitcoin is controlled: the new wallet’s private keys authorize future spending, provided the transaction confirms. It does not make the old address disappear, remove its public history, or prove that an unrelated device or account is secure. Continue to use fresh receiving addresses and protect the replacement wallet’s recovery information.

If only an address or ordinary public key was exposed, the transfer is a sensible way to stop future receipts to that identifier, but it is not an emergency proof that funds are already at risk. If a private key, seed, or extended private key was exposed, prioritize a new wallet and a documented sweep over convenience. In both cases, verify every character and protect the backup before you consider the job finished.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can someone spend my bitcoin if they know only my public key?
Normally no. A public key or address is public information and does not reveal the private key needed to sign a spend. The exposure can still reduce privacy and make activity easier to track. The answer is different if the exposed item was actually a private key, seed phrase, wallet backup containing private material, or extended private key.
Should I move bitcoin immediately after an address or public key is exposed?
For an address or ordinary public key alone, moving to a fresh wallet-controlled address is a prudent privacy measure, but it is not the same as responding to a stolen private key. Prepare and back up the destination, verify it carefully, and send through the wallet’s normal procedure. If private material was exposed, treat the move as urgent.
What should I do if an extended public key was leaked?
An extended public key cannot normally authorize spending, but it can reveal future receiving addresses and relationships among transactions. Stop sharing it, review which services or people received it, and consider moving funds to a separately generated wallet if you need to reduce future wallet-level correlation. Earlier blockchain history remains public.
Is a test transaction required?
No. A small test can confirm the destination and receiving setup, but it adds another on-chain transaction, fee, and possible delay. If you use one, verify the destination again before sending the remainder.
How many confirmations should I wait for?
Bitcoin.org’s guidance, accessed in 2026, lists six confirmations as the minimum recommendation for high-value transfers. Your receiving wallet, service, or risk policy may use a different threshold, so follow the recipient’s stated requirement.
How much does moving the bitcoin cost?
The sending transaction normally incurs a network fee determined by the transaction and current fee conditions. The exact amount varies by wallet and network state. A test payment can add a second fee. A hardware wallet is optional and may involve a device purchase, but it is not required for the transfer.
Recommended Free Tools
What if I sent the bitcoin to the wrong address?
Bitcoin has no general cancellation mechanism. Keep the transaction ID and contact the destination owner only if you can identify one. Be wary of recovery scams, and never disclose your recovery phrase or private key to someone promising to return the funds.
Is a hardware wallet necessary for moving funds from an exposed address?
No. A self-custodial software wallet can receive the funds if its keys and backup are properly protected. A hardware wallet can add an independent display for address verification and isolate signing keys, but it still requires careful setup and backup.
The Bottom Line
An exposed Bitcoin address or ordinary public key does not normally give an attacker spending authority. Create and back up a fresh wallet, generate a new receiving address, verify it on a trusted display, send the funds, and wait for the confirmation threshold your recipient requires. Treat any exposed private key, recovery phrase, or extended private key as a wallet compromise: create a completely new wallet and sweep the funds without revealing the secret.
