The safest way to move data is to start the transfer on the new phone. For an iPhone going to a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold, use Samsung Smart Switch; a cable usually carries the widest range of supported content, while wireless and iCloud are useful alternatives. For an Android phone going to an iPhone, use Apple’s “From Android” setup flow with the Move to iOS app. Apps themselves do not move as cross-platform binaries: install their Android or iPhone versions and sign in again, then verify app-specific data.
Keep the old phone charged, unlocked and available until photos, files, contacts, messages, account recovery and important apps all work on the foldable. The exact categories available vary by phone model, operating-system version, region and transfer method.
What transfers—and what does not
An iPhone and an Android foldable use different operating systems and app stores. A transfer tool can copy supported data, but it cannot turn an iOS app package into an Android app package (or the reverse). Expect a combination of automated copying, fresh downloads and manual cleanup.

Install each app’s Android edition from Google Play on the foldable and sign in with the account used on the iPhone. Some services restore their data after login because the data is stored online; others keep important state only in the original app or require that app’s own export or migration process. Banking, authenticator, password-manager, messaging and game apps commonly ask for additional verification.

Google’s Android setup documentation says that only certain apps and app data can be copied, and specifically excludes some downloads, hidden-folder media, apps installed outside Google Play, data from apps that do not use Android backup, and some non-Google accounts or settings. That guidance describes Android’s general setup process, not a guaranteed list for an iPhone-to-Galaxy transfer. Smart Switch shows the categories supported for the two devices you connect.
Files and media
Contacts, camera photos, videos, text messages, calendars and some settings can be offered by the destination phone’s transfer utility. Ordinary documents, PDFs, downloads, voice recordings and files in third-party apps may need a separate copy through cloud storage or a computer. Check the original location, date and file type after copying.
iCloud Photos can contain originals that are not downloaded to the iPhone. If a transfer finds only optimized versions, or if media remains in iCloud, some items may be absent on the foldable. Unsupported formats and an interrupted transfer can produce the same symptom.

Prepare both phones before an iPhone-to-Android move
Identify the exact devices and software
Write down the iPhone model, iOS version, foldable model, Android version and available storage. Samsung states that Smart Switch support changes with the device operating system, operating-system version and connection method. An Android foldable from another manufacturer may use a different migration utility and different categories, so follow its on-screen flow rather than assuming Samsung’s menus apply.

Protect your accounts and data
- Back up the iPhone and make sure you can sign in to the Apple Account and every important service.
- Keep two-factor authentication methods, recovery phone numbers, backup codes and password-manager access available. A verification prompt may appear on the old iPhone during an iCloud import.
- Update the iPhone and the foldable where practical, install pending security updates, and charge both devices. Leave the old phone powered on until the final checks are complete.
- Check that the foldable has enough free space. If it does not, plan to leave large photo and video groups in cloud storage and download them later.
- Review iCloud Photos and iCloud Drive. Decide whether originals need to be downloaded first or whether you will retrieve them through Smart Switch, Google Photos, another cloud service or a computer.

Move an iPhone to a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold with Smart Switch
Samsung describes Smart Switch as moving contacts, photos, videos, messages, apps, settings and more from an iOS or Android device to a new Galaxy. The list shown by the app is authoritative for your particular iPhone, Galaxy model and connection.
Wired transfer
- On the Galaxy Z Fold, open Smart Switch.
- Choose Receive on this phone, select iPhone/iPad, and choose Cable.
- Connect the phones with the appropriate cable. A Lightning iPhone may need a USB-C-to-Lightning cable or a connector adapter.
- Unlock the iPhone. Accept its trust or access prompt when it appears; without that approval, the Galaxy cannot read the selected content.
- Review the categories Smart Switch offers. Select only what fits the Galaxy’s available storage, or deselect the largest photo and video groups for a separate cloud transfer.
- Start the transfer and follow any app-specific prompts. Messaging apps such as WhatsApp may require their own confirmation or migration step.
- Wait for copying and organization to finish. Do not disconnect either phone because the progress indicator appears idle for a while.
- Open representative photos, videos, contacts, message threads, documents and key apps on the Galaxy before changing or erasing anything on the iPhone.
Wireless transfer
Choose the wireless option in Smart Switch when a cable is unavailable. Keep both phones close, unlocked and charged. The network must allow the devices to discover each other; guest networks and client-isolation settings can prevent pairing. Samsung describes an updated QR-code connection experience for its eighth-generation Galaxy Z devices, but the exact screen depends on the model, software and region.
If pairing fails, switch to a cable rather than repeatedly restarting a weak wireless session. Cable and wireless may also expose different categories, so compare the selection screen before starting.

- Open Smart Switch on the Galaxy and select the iPhone/iPad source.
- Choose the iCloud option and sign in with the Apple Account used for the data you want to retrieve.
- Approve the verification request on the iPhone or another trusted Apple device.
- Select the compatible categories displayed by Smart Switch and begin the import.
- Afterward, check whether the iPhone still contains items that were not in iCloud, and copy those separately.
Samsung’s current eighth-generation guidance says its upgraded iOS-to-Galaxy method applies to Android 17 or later and iOS 26.6 or later, outside mainland China. That statement is specific to the eighth-generation Galaxy Z series and its supported regions; it does not make the feature universal to every Android foldable or every iPhone.

Handle apps, messages and account data after the copy
Reinstall and sign in
Open Google Play on the foldable, search for each essential service and install its Android version. Use the same email address or login method as before. If an app offers a “restore,” “transfer,” or “import” option, follow that app’s instructions instead of assuming Smart Switch copied its private database.
For security-sensitive apps, expect a new-device registration. Re-enroll an authenticator, approve the new phone in your bank’s security settings, and verify that push notifications arrive. If an app used Sign in with Apple, it may offer an Android sign-in path that uses the same Apple Account; record any relay email address shown by the service.
Check messaging and number activation
Insert or activate the SIM/eSIM on the foldable according to your carrier’s instructions. Send test messages from both an Android and an Apple contact. If messages from iPhone users do not arrive, turn off iMessage on every iOS or iPadOS device associated with your phone number, then ask affected contacts to start a new conversation addressed to your phone number rather than an Apple Account address.

Review photos and files
Use the Photos app, a file manager and the relevant cloud apps to inspect more than the item count. Open older and recent photos, a long video, a PDF, a document with a non-Latin filename and any archive that matters to you. Check capture dates, folder locations and whether files are available offline. If storage is tight, leave the original library in Google Photos or another service and download only working sets.

Move an Android phone to an iPhone
For the reverse direction, use Apple’s setup transfer rather than trying to copy Android app packages directly.
During new iPhone setup
- On the Android phone, install Google’s listed Move to iOS app and keep both devices charging.
- Turn on the new iPhone. During setup, reach the data-transfer screen and choose From Android.
- Open Move to iOS on Android, enter the code shown by the iPhone and follow the prompts to select content.
- Use a USB-C cable when the phones support it; Google says a wired connection is more reliable than Wi-Fi. Follow the iPhone’s displayed instructions if a different connector or adapter is required.
- Leave both devices alone until the iPhone’s progress bar completes, even if Android reports that it has finished first.
- Complete iPhone setup, then download iOS versions of your apps from the App Store and sign in.
Some free apps may be matched when both stores carry the same service and that service supports the transfer. Expect to download apps again. Music, books and PDFs may require manual movement because they are not automatically recreated as App Store purchases or iOS app data.
If the iPhone is already set up
Apple’s documented setup transfer requires the iPhone to be at the initial setup stage. If setup is complete, either erase the iPhone and restart setup—after confirming that nothing new on it needs saving—or move the content manually. An erase removes data currently on the iPhone, so make a backup first.

Cloud route
Install the same cloud-storage or photo service on the destination phone and sign in. Wait for synchronization, then mark critical folders for offline use. This approach is useful for large libraries, but it does not prove that every original downloaded; inspect the service’s upload status and the destination’s available space.

Computer route
Export the missing files from the old phone to a computer, organize them into clearly named folders, then connect the new phone and copy them to a location its file manager can access. Preserve original filenames and dates where the operating system allows. Open a sample from each folder on the destination device.
App-specific exports
Notes, chats, password vaults, recordings and creative projects may have an export command inside the original app. Use that command, store the export securely, and import it into the destination app. Do not delete the source app until the import has been opened and verified.
Troubleshoot a failed or incomplete transfer
The phones cannot pair wirelessly
- Confirm that both phones are on the same local network and that device discovery is allowed. A guest network may block it.
- Turn off a VPN or network-isolation feature temporarily, then retry the on-screen pairing flow.
- Keep the phones close and charged. If the QR or wireless method still fails, use a compatible cable.
The transfer stops or never finishes
- Unlock the source phone and accept any trust, access or verification prompt.
- Reconnect with a known data-capable cable; some cables charge but do not carry data.
- Restart both devices and retry with large photo and video categories deselected. Move those categories separately after the smaller transfer succeeds.
- Keep the phones powered and avoid switching apps repeatedly while the transfer runs.
There is not enough storage
Check free space on the destination, then deselect the largest categories—usually videos and full-resolution photos. Transfer the remainder first and use a cloud library or computer for the excluded files. Do not assume that deleting the source files will create space on the destination.
Photos or files are missing
Look in iCloud, the old phone’s local storage, the destination file manager and the destination photo app. Items still in iCloud, unsupported formats and an interrupted session are documented causes of missing media. Re-download or export those items, then compare folders and dates rather than relying only on the total count.
Texts do not arrive after switching to Android
Deactivate iMessage on all Apple devices tied to the number, confirm SIM/eSIM activation and test with a new conversation. Contacts who previously messaged an Apple Account address may need to select the phone number explicitly.
Verification checklist before erasing or trading in the old phone
- Open recent, old and favorite photos; play a long video; and inspect screenshots and albums.
- Open representative PDFs, downloads, documents, recordings and archives from each important folder.
- Check contacts, calendars, notes and message threads, including one-to-one and group conversations.
- Sign in to email, banking, work, cloud storage, password manager and two-factor authentication apps.
- Make and receive a call, send and receive SMS/RCS or iMessage as appropriate, and test mobile data.
- Confirm that account-recovery numbers, backup codes and trusted-device lists now include the new phone.
- Check that photos and files marked for cloud backup have actually synchronized.
- Only after these checks pass should you remove accounts, erase the old phone and prepare it for trade-in or resale.
Google’s switching checklist emphasizes keeping the old device, updating recovery information, saving app passwords, checking linked-app access, backing up data and verifying the result. That discipline matters more than the transfer animation: a successful completion screen is not proof that every account or file is usable.
The Bottom Line
Use the destination phone’s official transfer flow, choose a cable when you need the widest Samsung-supported coverage, reinstall apps rather than expecting cross-platform binaries, and keep the old phone until you have tested your data and account access.
