You can move much of your information to GrapheneOS without relying on Google’s device backup, but there is no one-step clone that reliably carries every app, private database, login session and encryption key. Treat the move as three separate jobs: reinstall the applications, restore each app’s private data with Seedvault or the app’s own export/transfer tool, and copy ordinary files such as photos and documents separately.
The critical safety rule is timing. Installing GrapheneOS replaces the operating system and wipes the device being installed, so complete and verify your backups before unlocking or flashing it. Keep the old phone available until the new setup has passed your own checks.
What actually moves to GrapheneOS
Android stores information in different areas, and a successful migration depends on which area contains the data you need.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Data category | Normal migration method | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Applications | Reinstall them on GrapheneOS | The application package can be installed again, but installation alone does not prove that its private database, account session or encryption keys came across. |
| App-private data | Seedvault restore or the application’s own backup, export or transfer feature | Coverage is app-dependent. There is no current, exhaustive matrix showing that every application restores correctly through Seedvault. |
| Shared files | Copy separately using local storage, a computer or another storage location | Photos, downloads, documents and other user files are a different category from isolated app-private storage. |
| Accounts and security credentials | Sign in again, or use the service’s documented migration flow | Some services require a fresh login, device approval, recovery code or a transfer from the old phone. |
GrapheneOS documentation distinguishes isolated app-private storage from shared storage. App-private storage is not available for arbitrary copying by other applications and is cleared when the application is uninstalled. Copying an APK or a folder in shared storage therefore does not necessarily bring back an app’s private database, login state or keys.

First decide which phone is the source
Converting the phone you already use
If GrapheneOS will replace the operating system on your current handset, that handset is both the source and the installation target. Finish every backup and file copy before starting the installer. Once the installation process reaches the device-wipe stage, data left only on that handset is at risk.
Moving from an old phone to a separate GrapheneOS phone
When the old phone remains intact, use it as your verification reference. Build backups from it, set up the new GrapheneOS phone, and compare important accounts, messages, files and app content before you reset or sell the old device.
Back up before unlocking or flashing
Make an inventory of irreplaceable information
Write down the applications and data that would be difficult to recreate. Include messaging histories, authenticator records, password-manager vaults, work profiles, notes, locally stored media, downloaded documents and any app that does not offer account-based synchronization. Mark each item as one of three things: covered by Seedvault, covered by an app-specific export, or copied as a normal file.
Enable Seedvault explicitly
Seedvault is included with GrapheneOS, but it is not a completed backup merely because it exists on the system. Enable it in GrapheneOS and create a backup before installation. The GrapheneOS FAQ states: “GrapheneOS includes Seedvault as an OS backup service which must be explicitly enabled, and it has the option to automatically restore app data when an app is reinstalled, so it wouldn’t lose track of it being the same profile.”
That wording describes an option, not a guarantee that every application’s data is restorable. A backup can be valid while an individual application still refuses to restore its private state because of how that application stores or protects its data.

Choose a backup destination
GrapheneOS describes encrypted Seedvault backups that can be stored locally or sent to cloud storage exposed through a storage-provider application. Choose the route you can verify before wiping the source.
| Route | Best fit | Checks to perform |
|---|---|---|
| Local Seedvault backup | You have compatible removable or external storage and want a copy under your control | Confirm that the phone, USB-C drive or other USB storage, and any adapter work together. Verify that the backup is visible and can be selected for restore. |
| Cloud destination through a storage-provider app | You prefer an off-device copy or do not have suitable local storage | Install and configure the provider application, confirm the upload completed, and ensure the new phone can reach the backup before retiring the old one. |
A USB-C flash drive or other external USB storage is a practical local target, but compatibility is specific to the phone, drive and adapter. GrapheneOS’s feature description supports local and supported provider-based destinations; it does not certify every product or promise complete app-data restoration.
Use each important app’s own migration feature
Open the current official backup or transfer instructions for every application whose data matters. Look for an in-app export, encrypted backup, device-to-device transfer or recovery-code workflow. A GrapheneOS forum response specifically points to Signal and Molly as examples of applications that should be handled with their own backup procedures where available. That is practical community guidance, not a permanent compatibility list.
Do not assume that reinstalling an application, copying its APK, or copying a similarly named folder will reproduce its private database. If an app offers a test restore or lets you export a human-readable file, perform that process while the old installation still works.
Copy shared files independently
Move photos, videos, downloads, documents, recordings and other ordinary files to a computer or external storage. Organize the copy so you can tell what has been transferred, and open several representative files from the destination. This separate copy is necessary because shared files and app-private storage follow different rules.

Prepare the installation itself
The official GrapheneOS web installation instructions require a USB cable to connect the device to a computer. Use a reliable cable and keep the phone powered during the process. The cable is an installation requirement; it does not replace the backups above.

- Keep recovery information available. Have account passwords, recovery codes and any app transfer codes ready. If an authenticator or security app requires approval from the old phone, do not erase that phone yet.
- Connect the device to the computer. Follow GrapheneOS’s current web installer instructions for the supported device. The installer will guide the bootloader and operating-system steps.
- Read the wipe warning before accepting it. Installing GrapheneOS replaces the existing operating system and erases the device’s existing data. Proceed only after the source content has been copied and checked.
- Complete the installation and initial setup. Let the phone finish booting into GrapheneOS before beginning restoration. Keep the old phone and all backup media untouched.
Restore in three passes
Pass 1: reinstall applications
Install the applications you actually need first, rather than attempting to recreate every old icon at once. If you use sandboxed Google Play, install it in the profile where the applications requiring it will run, then install those applications there. GrapheneOS treats Google components as optional sandboxed apps, not as built-in system services.
Reinstallation may come from an app store, a developer-provided package or another legitimate source appropriate to that application. The source of the package does not determine whether private data will restore; that depends on Seedvault support or the app’s own migration design.
Pass 2: restore app-private data
Use the Seedvault restore option on the new installation and select the backup destination you verified earlier. GrapheneOS documents an option to automatically restore app data when an application is reinstalled. Where that option works, reinstalling the same application in the same user profile can trigger its associated restore.
Expect uneven results. Some applications may restore settings or local records; others may restore nothing, require a fresh sign-in, or insist on their own encrypted export. Treat every high-value application as unverified until you open it and check its actual content.

Pass 3: put shared files back
Copy your photos, videos, documents, downloads and other shared files into the new phone’s corresponding storage locations. Open files from several folders, check dates and sizes, and confirm that applications can see the files they are supposed to use. A file copy can succeed even when an app’s private database did not, so check both layers.
Where sandboxed Google Play fits
GrapheneOS does not bundle Google apps or services. It provides a compatibility layer that allows official Google Play releases to be installed as ordinary sandboxed applications, limited to the user or work profile in which they are installed.
Google account sign-in is optional overall, but some account-dependent application features and Play Store downloads require it. Installing sandboxed Play can make those applications usable; it does not turn Google sign-in into a universal device-backup restore. Do not infer that logging into Play will import the old phone’s private app state.

Common failure modes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely reason | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The application is installed but has none of its old content. | Its private data was not included in a usable restore, or the app requires its own migration method. | Keep the source phone, read the application’s current backup instructions, and run its export or transfer process. Do not uninstall the old copy while investigating. |
| Photos and documents are missing even though an app restored. | Shared storage was not copied separately. | Restore the ordinary files from the computer, local drive or other verified copy, then reopen the application. |
| Seedvault cannot find the backup. | The destination is unavailable, the storage-provider application is not configured, or the local drive/adapter is incompatible. | Reconnect the local storage or configure the provider app, confirm that the backup is visible, and retry before changing or deleting the original backup. |
| An app restores settings but asks for a new login. | Authentication tokens may be intentionally device-bound or excluded from the restore. | Sign in using the service’s recovery process and complete any approval or code challenge from the old phone. |
| An application that depended on Google components no longer works. | GrapheneOS does not include Google services by default, or Play was installed in a different profile. | Install the required sandboxed Google components in the same user or work profile as the application, then follow the app’s own account setup instructions. |
| The old phone was erased before a missing item was noticed. | The verification stage was skipped. | Check every available external backup, app export and cloud copy. If none contains the missing private data, it may not be recoverable from the erased installation. |
Choosing the safest migration strategy
Use Seedvault as a foundation
Seedvault is the broadest system-level option documented by GrapheneOS, especially when you want one encrypted backup covering multiple applications and settings. Its limitation is coverage: restoration remains dependent on each application’s behavior.
Use app-level export for high-value data
For a messaging history, secure vault or other irreplaceable record, an application’s documented export or transfer flow is preferable when it exists. It gives you a procedure designed by the app’s developer instead of asking a general backup service to reproduce private internals.
Use both whenever the data matters
The most resilient plan combines an encrypted Seedvault backup, app-specific exports for critical applications, and a separately verified copy of shared files. These layers protect different storage categories and reduce the chance that one app-specific limitation becomes permanent data loss.

What the available evidence does—and does not—promise
GrapheneOS’s official material establishes that installation wipes the device, Seedvault is included but must be enabled, backups can use local storage or supported storage-provider applications, and app-private storage is isolated from shared files. It does not publish a complete, current per-application restore matrix in the material described here.
A July 15, 2025 GrapheneOS Discussion Forum question asks for a guide to transferring apps and data from an old GrapheneOS phone to a new one. Community replies are useful for identifying app-specific concerns, including Signal and Molly, but they should not be read as a guarantee that every version of those or other applications will restore in the same way.
