There is no single Windows setting that moves every app cache and temporary file to another drive. Windows provides separate tools for three different jobs: finding and deleting space-consuming files, choosing another drive for certain kinds of new personal content, and configuring a cache location inside an individual application. Treating those as one “move all caches” feature can leave programs broken or simply fail to change where they write.

Use the procedure below to identify what is filling the system drive, reclaim space safely, redirect supported future content, and then handle a specific application using that application’s documented setting. The safest approach is to change only the path an application explicitly supports and verify the result before deleting anything.

What Windows can and cannot move

First decide whether you want to delete expendable data, direct new files to another drive, or relocate a named app’s cache. These are separate operations, with different controls and different risks.

Goal Windows mechanism What it affects What it does not do
Recover space now Storage Sense and Cleanup recommendations Selected unnecessary temporary files and other categories you approve Does not relocate caches; Storage Sense operates on the Windows system drive
Keep future personal content elsewhere Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Where new content is saved Supported content types, such as new apps, documents, music, pictures, videos, and maps, depending on the Windows release Does not move arbitrary existing AppData, Win32 caches, or every temporary file
Change one application’s cache path The application’s own preferences or official documentation Only the cache or temporary path that application supports Does not change paths used by other applications or Windows itself
Fix Microsoft Store package files rapidly filling Temp Store reset, wsreset.exe, and Windows Update troubleshooting The Store’s cache and related servicing problems Is not a general cache-relocation method

Microsoft describes temporary app data as cache-like and reclaimable. It can be removed by maintenance or Disk Cleanup, and its persistence beyond an app session is not guaranteed. Do not treat a cache as the only copy of documents, project files, saved games, or other user data. A cache may contain useful previews or downloaded components, but the application should be able to recreate it.

  • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)

  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)

Also distinguish a cache from a library or download folder. A library can contain the files you created or purchased; deleting or disconnecting it can cause real data loss or make a project unavailable. A cache is normally disposable, but only the application knows which of its folders are safe to clear.

Step 1: Find what is filling the system drive

Do not move folders blindly. Start with the category that is actually growing; otherwise you may relocate data that is not responsible for the problem and introduce an unnecessary failure point.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to System > Storage. Windows releases use slightly different labels, but the Storage page is the starting point.
  3. Review the category breakdown, including installed apps, temporary files, documents, pictures, videos, and other displayed categories.
  4. Open the category with the unexpected growth and note the applications or folders identified there.
  5. Check Cleanup recommendations if it is offered. Review each proposed item before selecting it; some recommendations include files you may still need.

Windows reserves some storage for temporary files, caches, and other operating-system work so updates and routine maintenance can proceed predictably. A full drive therefore may not be caused by a single visible cache folder. Record the category and the named application before changing any path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Take a second look after a restart or after the application has completed its normal work. Installers, updates, browsers, development tools, and media applications can create temporary data during an operation and remove it later. A folder that is large once does not necessarily identify a persistent leak.

Step 2: Recover space with Windows cleanup tools

Use Storage Sense for routine cleanup

Storage Sense is a cleanup feature, not a relocation feature. Microsoft states that “Storage Sense works on your system drive only,” the drive containing Windows and usually called C:. It can remove unneeded temporary files according to the schedule and options you select.

  1. Open Settings > System > Storage.
  2. Select Storage Sense.
  3. Turn it on if you want automatic cleanup.
  4. Choose when it should run and review the options for temporary files, Recycle Bin content, and other available categories.
  5. Run the cleanup or wait for the chosen schedule, then return to Storage to confirm the result.

Available switches and wording vary by Windows release. Read each option rather than enabling every deletion rule: a setting that removes files from a download or recycle location can delete material you intended to keep. If another person uses the PC, confirm that cleanup will not remove files they expect to recover.

Use Cleanup recommendations when you want to approve items individually

On the Storage page, open Cleanup recommendations and inspect the proposed categories. Select only data that is disposable, then choose the clean-up command shown by Windows. This is useful when you need a one-time recovery and do not want to configure a recurring schedule.

Cleanup tools remove files from the system drive; they do not create a second copy on another drive. If the same application recreates its cache later, that is normal behavior. Repeated growth points to the application’s own retention policy or workload, so inspect that application rather than repeatedly deleting random folders.

Step 3: Send supported new content to another drive

If your aim is to prevent future personal files from accumulating on C:, use Windows’ supported default-location controls. This changes where eligible new content is saved; it is not a command to move every existing file or app cache.

  1. Open Settings > System > Storage.
  2. Open Advanced storage settings.
  3. Select Where new content is saved.
  4. For each listed content type, choose the destination drive you want to use.
  5. Apply the change, then verify the destination when creating or installing the next item.

The list of content types depends on the Windows edition and release. It commonly includes new applications, documents, music, pictures, videos, and offline maps. Choose a drive with enough free space and a stable drive letter. If the destination is removable, content that depends on it may be unavailable when that drive is disconnected.

These controls do not promise to move an existing application’s AppData directory, a browser cache, a game launcher cache, or a system temporary directory. Move existing personal files separately using the file’s own location controls or File Explorer, and leave application-managed data to the application unless its documentation says otherwise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Changing the default for new content also does not guarantee that every installer honors it. Some desktop installers ask for their own location, while others always place components on the system drive. Check the installer’s destination screen and the application’s documentation instead of assuming the Windows default applies universally.

Step 4: Configure a named application’s cache

Cache paths are application-specific. Some programs expose a setting such as Cache location, Temporary files, Scratch disk, or Download directory; others do not. The setting may be in Preferences, Advanced settings, a launcher, or an installer rather than in Windows.

A safe per-application workflow

  1. Close the application and any helper or updater processes it uses. Check the notification area and, when appropriate, Task Manager so a background process is not still writing to the old path.
  2. Read the application’s current official instructions for changing its cache or temporary path. Confirm that your version supports a separate drive and whether the change applies to existing data, new entries, or both.
  3. Create a destination folder on the other drive, using a simple path that the application can access. Avoid a location that is routinely disconnected or protected by unusual permissions.
  4. Change the path in the application’s settings. If the application offers a “move existing cache” action, use that instead of manually dragging folders.
  5. Restart the application and perform a small operation that should create cache data.
  6. Confirm that new files appear in the destination and that the application still opens projects, downloads, or extensions normally.
  7. Only after verification, remove the old cache through the application’s own cleanup command. Keep a backup of irreplaceable user data; a cache itself is normally disposable.

Keep the destination’s drive letter stable. If the application stores an absolute path and Windows later assigns a different letter, it may report a missing cache or fail to start. On a shared PC, also test with the account that normally runs the application, because permissions and mapped drives can differ between users.

Microsoft’s developer documentation includes separate-drive examples for selected package-management caches on Windows 11 Dev Drive. Those examples demonstrate support for particular tools, not a universal setting for consumer applications. A path documented for one package manager must not be copied to an unrelated program.

If the app has no cache-location setting

Do not assume that changing a folder name, registry value, or environment variable will be supported. Leave the cache where the application expects it, use the app’s cleanup controls, and redirect the application’s larger downloads or libraries when those options exist. You can also use Storage Sense to remove reclaimable temporary data from the system drive.

Some applications offer separate controls for previews, logs, downloads, shader data, scratch files, and export staging. Moving a download directory may save more space than moving a small cache, but it is still a different setting. Record each path you change so you can restore it during troubleshooting or after replacing the drive.

Microsoft Store Temp-folder files: a separate fix

A Temp directory that rapidly fills with Microsoft Store package files is a specific Store or servicing problem, not proof that all Windows caches should be moved.

  • 256-BIT AES ENCRYPTION(4) – helps keep private files secure with password protection.
  1. Open the Windows Settings app and go to the installed-apps list for Microsoft Store, then use its Advanced options and the available Reset command. The exact path varies by Windows release.
  2. Press Windows key + R, enter wsreset.exe, and press Enter. A command window may appear briefly while the Store cache is cleared; the Store normally opens afterward.
  3. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter from Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters (labels can vary), then apply any recommended repair.
  4. Restart Windows and watch the Temp folder and Storage breakdown for recurrence.

If the files return, record the Store app, update, or error associated with the growth and use Microsoft’s current Store and Windows Update troubleshooting guidance. Do not delete random package directories while Store or update processes are running. Resetting the Store is targeted maintenance; it is not permission to remove unrelated folders under AppData or Windows.

Should you use a second internal drive or an external SSD?

A second drive can provide capacity for a supported destination, but hardware alone does not alter an application’s cache path. You still need a Windows default-location control or an application setting that points to that drive.

  • Internal drive: usually remains available and is less likely to disappear while an application is running.
  • External SSD: useful when the computer has no spare internal capacity, but the cable, enclosure, drive letter, and power connection must remain reliable.
  • Removable destination: unsuitable for an app that must start when the drive is disconnected. Reconnecting it with a different drive letter can also make a stored path invalid.

Use the other drive for supported content, libraries, or documented caches. Do not move a cache merely because the destination is empty; the application must be able to find and write the path consistently. An external drive is an optional capacity solution, not a substitute for a supported path setting.

Why broad “move Temp” guides can fail

The reviewed Microsoft guidance does not document a universal, supported procedure that relocates every user or system TEMP directory, the complete AppData tree, or all Win32 application caches. Registry edits, blanket AppData moves, junctions, and symbolic links can create compatibility and recovery problems:

  • Installers and updaters may still expect the original path or permissions.
  • A program running as another account or service may not see the same drive mapping.
  • Recovery tools and safe mode may start without the second drive or its driver.
  • Removing a link or changing a drive letter can make an application appear to lose its data.
  • Some “temporary” files are active while Windows is running and cannot be safely moved until the owning process stops.

These techniques should not be presented as a general Microsoft-supported solution. If a vendor explicitly documents one for a particular product, follow that product’s instructions and keep a recovery plan. Before changing any system-wide path, make sure you can boot, sign in, reconnect the destination, and undo the change without relying on the application that may be affected.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The system drive is almost full, but no single app is obvious

  • Recheck Settings > System > Storage and inspect every large category.
  • Run Cleanup recommendations and review Storage Sense settings.
  • Look for large personal files, update leftovers, and several moderate caches rather than assuming one culprit.
  • Restart after cleanup and check whether the category grows again.
  • Check whether a Store or Windows Update operation is repeatedly recreating temporary package files.

The cache moved, but the app still writes to C:

  • Confirm that you changed the cache path, not only a download or library path.
  • Check whether the application has separate paths for previews, logs, downloads, shader data, and temporary exports.
  • Verify the destination drive is online and that the account running the app has write permission.
  • Re-read the current documentation for your exact application version; some settings apply only to new cache entries.
  • Close and reopen the app before judging the result; an already-open process may retain the old path.

The application stopped starting after a path change

  1. Undo the setting in the application’s preferences if you can open it.
  2. Reconnect the destination drive and restore its original drive letter if it changed.
  3. Use the application’s repair, reset, or clear-cache option.
  4. If necessary, restore the original folder from a backup and contact the application’s support channel before deleting more data.

The destination drive keeps disconnecting

Move the supported content back to a continuously available drive, or keep the external drive connected before launching the application. A disconnected cache is usually recoverable because cache data is disposable, but an unavailable library or download directory may prevent the app from opening the associated content.

A practical decision checklist

  • Need space immediately? Inspect Storage, then use Storage Sense or Cleanup recommendations.
  • Want documents or media saved elsewhere in future? Use Where new content is saved.
  • Need to change one app’s cache? Use that app’s documented cache setting, test it, and then remove the old cache.
  • Seeing Microsoft Store package files in Temp? Reset the Store, run wsreset.exe, and troubleshoot Windows Update.
  • Considering a whole-AppData or TEMP relocation? Stop and verify vendor-specific support; Windows does not provide a universal relocation control in the reviewed guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Windows move every app cache to another drive with one setting?

No. Windows separates cleanup, default locations for certain new content, and application-specific cache settings. There is no universal control for every AppData folder, Win32 cache, or temporary directory.

Does Storage Sense move temporary files?

No. Storage Sense works on the Windows system drive and removes selected unneeded files according to the options and schedule you choose. It cleans rather than relocates.

Will “Where new content is saved” move my existing caches?

No. That setting controls eligible new applications, documents, music, pictures, videos, maps, or other listed content, depending on the Windows release. Existing AppData and application-managed caches require their own supported controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is it safe to delete an app cache?

A cache is generally reclaimable and may be recreated, but use the application’s cleanup command when available. Do not delete adjacent folders containing projects, documents, saved games, downloads, or other user data.

What should I do if Microsoft Store files keep filling Temp?

Reset Microsoft Store from its Advanced options, run wsreset.exe, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, and restart. This targeted sequence is different from moving the entire Temp directory.

Can I use an external SSD for a cache?

Only when Windows or the application supports that destination. Keep the drive connected, preserve its drive letter, and ensure the account running the app can write to it. Hardware alone does not change a cache path.

Why did an app stop working after I moved its cache?

The path may be unavailable, the drive letter may have changed, permissions may be insufficient, or the application may not support that location. Restore the documented setting or original path, reconnect the drive, and use the app’s repair or reset option.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I move the whole AppData folder or system TEMP directory?

Not as a general fix. The reviewed Microsoft guidance does not document a universal supported procedure, and broad moves, links, or registry edits can break installers, services, recovery tools, and applications.

The Bottom Line

Windows does not offer a universal “move all caches” switch. First identify the growing category in Settings > System > Storage, then use Storage Sense or Cleanup recommendations for immediate recovery. Redirect eligible future personal content with Where new content is saved. For a named application, change only the cache or temporary path documented by that application, test it with the destination drive available, and remove the old cache only after verification. Treat Microsoft Store Temp growth as a separate Store and Windows Update troubleshooting problem, not as a reason to relocate every Windows temporary folder.
