To move a Simple Machines Forum (SMF) installation from /forum (or another subfolder) to your domain root, relocate the files, then change both SMF’s filesystem settings and every database path or URL that still contains the old folder. Moving files alone leaves attachments, themes, avatars, smileys, links, or login redirects pointing to the former location.
The safe sequence is: back up the files and database, make sure the root document directory is available, move the complete SMF tree, edit Settings.php, update the database path families, run SMF’s repair utility if necessary, and test normal visitor and administrator actions before deleting the old copy.
What changes when SMF moves to the root?
An SMF installation has two kinds of location data:
- Filesystem paths tell PHP where the forum files, source code, attachments, avatars, smileys, and themes exist on the server.
- Public URLs tell browsers where to request the forum pages and image files.
When the forum changes from https://example.com/forum to https://example.com, both kinds of value must lose the /forum segment. The web server’s document root must also point to the directory containing SMF’s index.php. A successful file transfer does not automatically rewrite configuration or database rows.

Simple Machines describes incorrect installation paths and URLs as capable of causing “big problems.” Its repair utility exposes the principal boarddir and boardurl values for correction. Treat the move as a configuration migration, not merely a file-management task.
Prepare before touching the installation
Confirm the destination document root
Find the document-root directory assigned to the domain in your hosting control panel. Many shared hosts call it public_html, but the actual absolute path can be different. The destination must be the directory that serves the domain’s root URL, not simply a directory with a similar name.

Check whether another application already occupies that directory. SiteGround’s SMF migration guidance warns that an existing script in the root can corrupt a migration. Remove, archive, or relocate the conflicting application only after you understand what currently serves the domain. Do not overwrite an active site without a rollback plan.
Record the old and new addresses
Write down the current forum URL, such as https://example.com/forum, and the intended root URL, such as https://example.com. Keep the protocol and hostname unchanged unless you are intentionally changing them in a separate project. The only URL component being removed here is the installation subfolder.
Arrange access and backups
You need file-manager or SFTP access to the current installation and destination, access to the SMF database through your host’s database tool, and permission to edit Settings.php. Create:

- A complete copy of the current SMF files, including hidden files such as
.htaccesswhere applicable. - A database export made before any path edits.
- A note of the current values of
$boardurl,$boarddir, and$sourcedir. - A list of custom themes and any attachment, avatar, or smiley directories stored outside the main tree.
Keep the backup and, if storage allows, the original subfolder intact until the root installation passes all tests. Schedule the move when you can briefly prevent new posts or uploads; otherwise, activity during the copy can leave the database and files out of sync.
Move the SMF files
- Open the current installation. Locate the directory that currently serves the forum, for example
public_html/forum. The directory should contain SMF’sSettings.php,Sources, theme directories, and the front-controller files. - Preserve the complete tree. Include hidden files, custom themes, language files, and any local modifications. Do not copy only
index.phpor only theSourcesdirectory. - Place the files directly in the document root. SiteGround’s instructions summarize this as moving all files from the current SMF folder into
public_html. After the operation, the forum’sindex.phpshould be directly under the root directory, not under a newpublic_html/forumfolder. - Retain permissions. Keep the permissions and ownership that allowed the old installation to run. If your file manager offers “move,” use it within the same account; if you must download and upload, verify that no files were skipped.
At this stage the files are in their new physical location, but SMF still contains the old paths. Do not judge the migration by opening the root URL yet; update the configuration first.
Edit Settings.php
Open the root copy of Settings.php in a plain-text editor. Change the three core variables so they describe the new location.

A resulting block may look like this (the hostname and filesystem path are examples; use the values assigned to your account):

$sourcedir = '/home/account/public_html/Sources';Do not put a trailing slash on $boardurl. Filesystem variables are different: they must identify directories on the server, and the source path must end in the actual Sources directory. Save the file without changing its PHP syntax or character encoding.

Update database paths and URLs
SMF stores additional locations in the database. Use your host’s database administration tool to locate the SMF settings and replace the old subfolder in every affected value. Preserve the rest of each path; remove only the segment that represented the old installation directory.

Check every theme row, not only the default theme. A forum can appear fixed while the default theme works and a user-selected custom theme still points to /forum. Likewise, a successful page load does not prove that attachment and avatar directories are writable and correctly addressed.
Make a fresh database export after saving the corrected values. That gives you a known-good rollback point separate from the pre-move backup.
Use SMF’s repair utility when paths are wrong
If SMF displays a configuration error, cannot load normally, or still uses the old location, run the repair utility supplied with SMF. Its settings page is designed to correct installation paths and URLs and exposes boarddir and boardurl.

If the administrator area cannot be reached, return to the file and database backups rather than repeatedly changing random values. A typo in an absolute path can prevent SMF from loading; restoring the known-good files and database gives you a controlled starting point.
Test the root installation systematically
Test as an anonymous visitor and as a normal member. Complete the following checks before removing the old directory:
- Open the root URL. The home page should load at the root address, not redirect to the old subfolder.
- Sign in and sign out. Confirm that the login form, session creation, logout action, and post-login redirect remain on the root URL.
- Open boards and topics. Visit several boards, a topic with replies, and pagination links. Inspect the address bar for any remaining old-folder segment.
- Check the active theme. Verify layout, CSS, JavaScript-driven controls, icons, and images. Switch to another installed theme if the forum offers that option.
- Render smileys and avatars. Open posts containing smileys and profiles containing avatars. A broken image indicates a URL or directory value still needs correction.
- Upload and download an attachment. Test a new upload as a permitted member, then download it from the post. This exercises both the configured upload directory and the public retrieval path.
- Inspect administration pages. Open configuration and theme-management screens to catch source-directory or permission errors that a public page may not reveal.
- Search for the old path. Follow menus, buttons, image requests, and representative internal links. Any generated URL containing the former subfolder identifies a remaining URL setting or custom template reference.
Keep browser developer tools or the page source available while testing images and scripts. A page that looks mostly correct can still be issuing requests to the old directory.

The root URL shows a server error or a blank page
Recheck $boarddir and $sourcedir first. They must be absolute paths to the new root and its Sources directory. Confirm that the moved files actually exist at those paths and that the file ownership and permissions match the working installation.
SMF redirects to the old subfolder
The most likely cause is an unchanged $boardurl or a database URL value. Correct $boardurl so it contains the root URL without a trailing slash, then inspect smileys_url, avatar_url, and each theme URL for the former segment.

Pages load, but images or theme styling are missing
Check the theme’s theme_url and images_url, then check smileys_url and avatar_url. Also confirm that the corresponding directories moved with the rest of the installation. A custom theme can retain old values even when the default theme is correct.
Attachments fail to upload or old attachments are unavailable
Verify attachmentUploadDir and make sure the directory exists at the configured absolute path. If attachments were stored outside the former SMF folder, do not move them blindly; set the database value to their actual current location and test both a new upload and an existing file.

The repair utility reports incorrect settings
Use its displayed boarddir and boardurl fields to correct the root values, save, and retest. If the utility itself cannot run, restore the pre-move backup, confirm the document root, and repeat the edit with the exact filesystem path supplied by the host.
Rollback plan
Do not delete the old subfolder immediately. If testing reveals a serious problem, place the original files back in their previous directory, restore the pre-move database export, and point the domain’s document root back to the original location if you changed it. Restore both the files and database together; mixing old files with newly edited settings can create a second, harder-to-diagnose state.
After the restored forum works, take another backup before attempting the move again. Correct one class of value at a time—document-root placement, Settings.php, then database paths—so a failure has an identifiable cause.
Self-service move or managed assistance?
The technical work is the same, but the access and responsibility differ. Choose the route that matches your access and rollback needs.

Ask any managed service to state its backup retention, rollback procedure, access requirements, maintenance window, and post-move troubleshooting scope in writing. The core SMF settings still need to be validated after the provider reports completion.
