The safest way is to copy the vault first, prepare Obsidian-only syntax, test one representative note, and then choose between Google Docs’ Paste from Markdown conversion and Drive’s Markdown mode. Pasting creates a native, collaborative Google Doc; uploading an .md file preserves editable Markdown but does not convert it. Neither route is lossless for Obsidian wikilinks, callouts, embeds, local attachments, HTML, or plugin syntax, so keep the original vault as your source of truth.
What is actually being moved
An Obsidian vault is a local folder containing Markdown-formatted plain-text notes plus subfolders and separate attachments. A vault is therefore not one guaranteed export file. It may contain hundreds of independent .md files, images, PDFs, audio, and other assets. Google Docs can handle a selected note or a curated collection well, but treating an entire vault as one automatic document usually creates broken links, an unmanageable file, or both.
Start by deciding whether the destination must be a native Google Docs document. That decision determines the transfer method:

- Markdown file in Drive: upload the
.mdfile and open it with Google Docs. It remains an.mdfile in Markdown mode; it is not converted into a native Google Docs document. - DOCX intermediary: use a Markdown-to-DOCX workflow when a Word-compatible file is required, then open the DOCX in Google Docs. This is a fallback, not an official Obsidian or Google conversion path.
Protect the vault before changing anything
Make a reversible copy
Duplicate the entire vault folder or create an archive before replacing links, moving attachments, or running any conversion. Work only on the copy. Keep the original Markdown files and asset folders untouched so you can recover the exact source if a parser changes formatting or a batch operation damages links.

Choose a manageable note set
For a project handoff, select the project folder and its required notes. For publishing, select only the notes that form the article or handbook. If readers need access to many notes, process them by folder, project, or topic and create a separate contents document with links. Do not assume that a whole vault should become one giant Google Doc.
Record the current attachment layout
Note where images, PDFs, audio, and other files live relative to the Markdown notes. Relative paths are useful during preparation, but Google Docs cannot automatically resolve every local path from your computer. Knowing the original layout lets you repair missing assets without altering the backup.

The first two options are the documented Google workflows. The crucial distinction is destination type: Paste from Markdown converts the clipboard content into Google Docs content, while opening an uploaded file keeps the file as Markdown.
Prepare Obsidian Markdown for a portable result
Keep standard Markdown syntax intact
Use ATX headings with a space after the hash marks, such as # Title and ## Section. Google documents support six heading levels, from # through ######. Standard emphasis markers (*italic*, **bold**, and their combined form), strikethrough, and ordinary Markdown links are the safest elements to leave unchanged.
Convert wikilinks
Obsidian links such as [[Note]] and [[Note#Heading]] are Obsidian-specific. Before pasting, convert them to visible text or standard Markdown links, for example [Note](Note.md). A heading link can become a link to a stable web location, a document URL added later, or plain text such as “Note — Heading” when no portable target exists. Do not assume Google Docs will resolve a local wikilink after conversion.
Replace block references and embeds
Block references, transclusions, and embedded notes depend on Obsidian’s internal syntax. Replace a block reference with the quoted text it points to, and replace an embedded note with its relevant content or a standard link. An embed that is left untouched may appear as literal characters rather than rendered content.

Rewrite callouts
Obsidian callouts are not ordinary Markdown. Convert each one to a blockquote, a bold lead-in, or a short paragraph before transfer. For example, turn a note callout into > Note: Check the backup first. or into a heading followed by text. This preserves meaning even when the colored callout styling cannot survive.

Decide how to handle YAML frontmatter
Frontmatter at the top of a note is metadata, not body formatting. Decide whether properties such as dates, aliases, and tags belong in the Google Doc. If readers need them, present them as a small labeled list or table. If they are only for Obsidian search and automation, remove them from the copy being pasted while retaining them in the untouched original.
Remove or neutralize HTML and plugin syntax
Google’s Markdown documentation states that HTML becomes plain text in Markdown files. HTML blocks, custom containers, Dataview queries, plugin-generated fields, and other extensions should therefore be converted to ordinary text, Markdown, or a manually recreated table. Keep plugin syntax in the source vault if you still need it there; do not delete it from the backup.
Workflow A: create a native Google Doc with Paste from Markdown
- Copy the note into a working file. Open the selected
.mdfile in a plain-text editor or Obsidian’s source view. Do not copy the rendered preview if you need Markdown conversion; copy the prepared Markdown source. - Clean the portable syntax. Apply the wikilink, callout, block-reference, embed, frontmatter, HTML, and attachment decisions described above. Confirm that headings use a space after each group of hash marks.
- Copy the Markdown content to your clipboard. Include the note body you want in the Google Doc. For a multi-note document, add a clear heading and a deliberate order between notes rather than concatenating an entire vault without navigation.
- Create or open a Google Doc. Place the cursor where the converted content should begin. A new blank document is easiest for a first test.
- Use the documented command. Right-click in the document and select Paste from Markdown. Google’s documented wording is “Copy the Markdown content to your clipboard” followed by “Right-click and select Paste from Markdown.”
- Inspect the conversion immediately. Check every heading level, emphasis run, link destination, table, code block, image position, and callout replacement before adding more notes.
- Reapply Google Docs styling only after the structure is correct. Add colors, highlights, alignment, or other presentation manually where needed. These are Google Docs styling choices, not portable Markdown formatting.
This workflow produces content in a native Google Doc, so collaborators can use normal Google Docs sharing, comments, and revision history. It does not make Obsidian-only constructs portable automatically; those must be prepared beforehand and audited afterward.
Workflow B: keep the file as Markdown in Drive
- Prepare the copy of the
.mdfile. Make the same syntax and attachment decisions, but retain any Markdown you want collaborators to edit directly. - Open Google Drive and upload the file. Upload the
.mdfile from the working copy. Keep its related assets available in a predictable folder. - Open the uploaded file with Google Docs. Use the Drive option to open the Markdown file in Google Docs.
- Confirm the file type. Google states: “Your file does not convert to a Google Docs file. It stays an .md file, kept in Drive.” Treat the opened document as Markdown mode, not as a native Google Docs document.
- Review the rendered view and edit behavior. Verify that headings, emphasis, links, tables, code, and images appear as expected. If the team needs native Docs comments or Docs-only layout controls, use Workflow A instead.
This approach is the better fit when preserving the Markdown file is more important than obtaining a fully native Google Docs document. It also makes the distinction clear to collaborators: editing this file is still editing Markdown, not silently creating a second source format.
Workflow C: use a DOCX intermediary only when necessary
A community-listed Obsidian DOCX Importer describes Markdown-to-DOCX export with preservation of headings, emphasis, highlights, links, lists, tables, blockquotes, code blocks, and images. It is not an official Obsidian or Google product. Its maintenance status and current behavior require verification before relying on it for important material.

- Create a copy of the prepared Markdown note set.
- Use the importer on that copy and export a DOCX.
- Open the DOCX in Google Docs.
- Compare the result with the source, paying particular attention to links, code, tables, images, and any styling the importer claims to preserve.
- Keep both the original Markdown and the generated DOCX; do not overwrite the source with the intermediary.
A second conversion step can preserve features that direct Markdown paste does not, but it also creates another place where layout and links can change. Use it for a concrete DOCX requirement, not as a guarantee of lossless vault conversion.
What survives and what needs a manual review

Make images and other attachments portable
Understand what an image reference means
An Obsidian image such as ![[diagram.png]] or a Markdown image with a relative path points to a separate file in the vault. The Markdown text alone does not contain the image. Copy the image files alongside the selected notes and preserve relative paths during preparation, but expect to verify every image after transfer.
Use direct insertion when local paths fail
If the resulting Google Doc cannot resolve a local path, insert the image directly into the document. For an image that must remain externally accessible, use a stable web URL rather than a path on one computer. PDFs, audio, and other attachments may need separate Drive uploads and explicit links; they should not be assumed to render merely because their filenames remain in the Markdown.
Check captions and ordering
Compare the position of each image with the source note and confirm that captions, surrounding paragraphs, and any links still refer to the correct asset. A successful text conversion does not prove that the attachment relationship survived.
Test one representative note before scaling
Select a note that exercises the features you actually use: several heading levels, bold and italic text, a list, a table, a code block, standard links, an image, and at least one callout or wikilink. Convert that note first and compare it side by side with the Obsidian source.
- Check that the hierarchy is navigable and no heading became ordinary text.
- Open several links, including one that was rewritten from a wikilink.
- Inspect table columns and code line breaks at normal zoom.
- Confirm that every image is visible and belongs to the right paragraph.
- Search for leftover characters such as
[[,]], transclusion markers, or plugin commands. - Record any repair pattern once, then apply it consistently to the remaining notes.
Only after the sample passes should you process the rest of a folder or project. A small test catches parser and path problems before they are multiplied across the vault.

Scale a vault without losing navigation
Group notes by purpose
Process project notes, reference material, meeting records, and published drafts separately. This keeps each Google Doc readable and makes access permissions easier to manage. Preserve the original folder names in the document titles or in a contents page so readers can map the Docs collection back to the vault.

For a multi-document migration, create a native Google Doc that lists each transferred note, its purpose, and its destination link. Build that index after the individual documents exist so the links point to the final files. An index is more reliable than trying to recreate Obsidian’s graph view in Google Docs.
Keep a source-of-truth policy
Decide whether future edits happen in Obsidian, Google Docs, or both. If both remain active, document which copy is authoritative and how changes are synchronized. Without that rule, a formatting repair in Docs can be mistaken for a change to the original Markdown.
Troubleshooting common failures
“Paste from Markdown” is missing
Make sure you are using the context menu inside a Google Doc and that the clipboard contains Markdown source rather than a rendered web selection. If the command still does not appear, use the uploaded-.md workflow or paste normally and apply Docs styles manually; do not claim that ordinary paste performed Markdown conversion.
Headings appear as plain text
Inspect the source for a missing space, such as #Heading instead of # Heading, or for indentation that turns the line into code. Correct the working copy, repeat the sample conversion, and then process the rest.

Wikilinks show brackets
That is expected when Obsidian syntax reaches a parser that does not understand it. Replace each wikilink with a standard Markdown link or readable text before conversion. For a large set, use a controlled text transformation on the copy and inspect the output; never run it against the only vault copy.

Images are missing
Check whether the Markdown points to a local relative path, whether the asset was copied, and whether the path changed when the note moved. Upload the asset to Drive or insert it directly into the native Doc, then verify that the resulting document remains readable to another collaborator.
Colors, highlights, or alignment disappeared
Google’s Markdown documentation says these styling features are removed in Markdown files. Reapply them in a native Google Doc after the structural conversion, or accept a plain Markdown presentation when file fidelity is the priority.
Smart chips became ordinary text or links
Google documents this as a possible conversion result. Recreate the smart chip in the native Doc if its interactive behavior matters; otherwise leave the text or link and verify that its destination is still correct.
The uploaded file will not behave like a Google Doc
That is not a failed conversion. An uploaded Markdown file remains an .md file in Drive. Use Paste from Markdown when collaborators need a native Google Docs document with Docs-specific collaboration features.
Practical decision rule
- Choose Paste from Markdown for a polished, collaborative Google Doc and accept manual cleanup of Obsidian-only syntax and styling.
- Choose uploading the
.mdfile when preserving editable Markdown and the original file type matters more than native Docs features. - Consider a DOCX intermediary only for a concrete DOCX requirement, and validate the community importer before using it on important notes.
For any route, the reliable process is the same: preserve a backup, prepare non-portable syntax, transfer one representative note, audit links and attachments, then scale by curated folders. Common Markdown formatting can survive well, but no documented workflow promises lossless conversion of an entire Obsidian vault.
