You can move most of an existing Steam library to a fresh Linux installation without downloading every game again. Quit Steam completely, make a second backup of the library’s steamapps directory, copy the entire library while preserving permissions and hidden files, install Steam on the new system, and add the copied library root from Settings > Storage. The root you add is the directory containing steamapps—not the steamapps directory itself. If a game still appears uninstalled, start its installation into that same library so Steam can scan the files, then run Verify integrity of game files.

This process reuses files that match the new installation’s platform and build. It does not make Windows and Linux depots interchangeable, and it does not guarantee that saves stored outside Steam Cloud will be found automatically.

What you need before starting

The safest migration has three separate copies or locations in mind: the old working library, a backup of its important data, and the destination library on the new Linux installation. Do not delete the old copy until several games have launched successfully on the new system.

  • Access to the old Linux installation or its disk, with Steam fully closed.
  • A destination drive with enough free space for the library and any files Steam must download for the new platform or build.
  • The same Steam account on the new installation. The account determines which app manifests and Cloud data are usable.
  • A copy method that preserves ownership, permissions, timestamps, symbolic links, hidden files, and directory structure.
  • A backup of steamapps. If saves matter, also back up ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata and any game-specific save directories that are not covered by Steam Cloud.

An internal SSD or another Linux-native filesystem is the best permanent destination. Steam Support says, “It is not recommended that you install Steam to an external hard drive, due to potential performance issues.” An external disk can still serve as temporary staging when it is mounted read/write and the copy retains correct ownership and permissions.

Know which Steam data must move

A visible game folder is only one part of an installation. Steam identifies installed games through metadata and keeps Proton prefixes and shader data beside the game files. The following locations have different jobs:

Location What it contains Why it matters during migration
steamapps/common The main game directories. These are the large files you are trying to reuse, but copying this folder alone is insufficient.
steamapps/appmanifest_<APPID>.acf Steam’s installed-game records for each app ID. Without the manifests, Steam may treat copied game directories as uninstalled until it rediscovers them.
steamapps/compatdata/<APPID>/pfx/ Proton’s Windows-compatible prefix, including its virtual C: drive. It can contain game settings, modifications, and saves. Preserve it when you need the existing Proton environment.
steamapps/shadercache Shader-preparation data associated with installed games. Keeping it can avoid rebuilding shader data after the move.
~/.local/share/Steam/userdata Per-account, per-game local data organized by Steam ID and app ID. It can contain saves and settings that are separate from the library’s visible game folders.
config/libraryfolders.vdf Steam’s record of configured library locations. It may refer to paths from the old installation. Adding the library through the Storage interface is safer than editing this file by hand.

The exact location of a library can vary. The rule that matters is structural: a Steam library root contains a steamapps directory directly beneath it. For example, if the old path is /mnt/games/SteamLibrary/steamapps, the library root to add later is /mnt/games/SteamLibrary.

Step-by-step migration

1. Exit Steam and stop writes to the old library

Close every Steam window, including download and friends windows. Wait for downloads, shader processing, cloud synchronization, and updates to finish. On a desktop environment, check the system process viewer if you are unsure whether Steam is still running. Do not begin copying while a process may be changing an app manifest or writing game data; a partially copied manifest can make a valid game look broken.

2. Make a separate backup

Before changing paths or moving disks, copy the complete steamapps directory to a separate location. This backup should include common, shadercache, compatdata, and every appmanifest_*.acf file. Also copy ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata when local saves or settings are important. Keep the backup untouched until the new installation has synchronized Cloud data and the relevant games have been opened.

3. Copy the whole library, not only the game folders

Copy the library directory that contains steamapps. Preserve ownership, permissions, timestamps, symbolic links, and hidden files. A graphical file manager can work if it offers these guarantees, but a metadata-preserving copy is easier to audit from a terminal.

For a local Linux-to-Linux copy, an example using rsync is:

rsync -aHAX --info=progress2 /old/path/SteamLibrary/ /new/path/SteamLibrary/

The trailing slash on the source means “copy the contents into the destination library.” Replace the example paths with your real mounted directories. If the destination filesystem or rsync build does not support ACLs or extended attributes, use the preservation options supported by that filesystem and verify ownership afterward. The important result is a complete library tree, not a new empty steamapps folder with only common copied into it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are using an external disk as a shuttle, mount it read/write, copy to it, safely unmount it, then copy to the new internal destination. Avoid treating a removable filesystem as the permanent Proton location if it cannot represent normal Linux ownership and permissions.

4. Install Steam on the new Linux system

Install the same or a newer Steam client, start it once, and sign in to the same account. Starting the client once lets it create its normal data directories and configuration before you point it at the copied library. Do not place the new library inside an unrelated directory merely because it has a familiar name; Steam needs the root that directly contains steamapps.

5. Add the copied root in Steam’s Storage page

  1. Open Steam and choose Steam > Settings.
  2. Open Storage.
  3. Use the drive or library control to add an existing library location.
  4. Select the copied library root, such as /new/path/SteamLibrary, not /new/path/SteamLibrary/steamapps.
  5. Allow Steam to rescan the location and return to the library view.

Adding the location through the interface updates Steam’s own library configuration and avoids hand-editing libraryfolders.vdf. Steam Support notes that adding a library can make existing games appear automatically. The manifests and directory structure are what allow that discovery.

6. Reconcile games that still show “Install”

If a copied game is listed as uninstalled, select it and begin the install flow. Choose the copied library as the destination. Steam should inspect the existing files rather than download an entirely new copy. Once discovery completes, open the game’s properties and run Verify integrity of game files. Verification compares the files with the current manifest and downloads only data that is missing or does not match.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not choose a different library during this step. Installing to another root can create a second directory and leave the copied files unused. If Steam begins downloading more than expected, pause it, confirm that the selected destination is the copied root, and check whether the installed files belong to the same platform, branch, language set, and build.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

7. Check filesystem ownership before testing Proton

Launch one native Linux game first, then one game that uses Proton. A Proton error such as “prefix not owned by you” usually means the mounted filesystem or copied directory is owned by another user, mounted with unsuitable options, or unable to provide normal Linux ownership semantics. Inspect the destination’s ownership and mount configuration, correct them for your user, and move the library or at least compatdata to a Linux-native filesystem when necessary.

Do not blindly change ownership of system directories. Apply any ownership correction only to the copied library and its Proton data, and confirm that your user can create and modify files there before launching a game.

8. Give Flatpak Steam access to the destination

If Steam was installed as a Flatpak, its sandbox may not be allowed to see a library on another disk even when the host operating system can. Grant the Steam Flatpak read/write access to the destination path using your desktop’s Flatpak permission manager or the equivalent Flatpak override, then restart Steam. After access is granted, add the library again from Settings > Storage. If the path is visible but games remain absent, remove and re-add the same root after restarting the client.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Keep the old installation until validation is complete

Open several games, including at least one native Linux title and one Proton title. Confirm that saves, controller settings, mods, and expected graphics or compatibility settings are present. Leave the old library and the userdata backup intact until Cloud synchronization has completed and you have opened the games that matter. Only then should you reclaim the old disk space.

Handling saves, Steam Cloud, and Proton prefixes

Steam Cloud is helpful but not universal

Steam Cloud is enabled per game and does not cover every title or every file. A Cloud conflict means Steam has different local and remote versions and cannot always select the correct one automatically. Keep the old userdata backup until the new installation has synchronized, then open the relevant games and confirm that the expected progress is present.

Where Proton saves may be

For Proton games, a save may be inside steamapps/compatdata/<APPID>/pfx/drive_c/users/..., alongside the Windows-style profile created by the prefix. Other games use a separate Linux path documented by the developer or community. If a save is missing, do not assume that the visible game directory is the only location; inspect the game’s documented save location and the corresponding app ID prefix while retaining the old copy.

Why preserving compatdata can matter

A newly generated prefix may start with default settings even when the game files are intact. Copying compatdata preserves the existing prefix, including settings, modifications, and saves stored inside it. Prefixes are tied to their app IDs and depend on a filesystem that supports the ownership and permissions Proton expects.

Native Linux builds, Windows builds, and verification downloads

Steam distributes a game’s native Linux and Windows versions as different depots. A copied Windows installation can be used with Proton, but it is not the same depot as a native Linux build. If you switch from Windows files to a native Linux installation, or change the selected compatibility target, Steam may need Linux-specific files even though a large directory already exists.

The same issue can occur after changing branches, language selections, downloadable content, or builds. Verification downloads are therefore not proof that the migration failed. Steam reuses only files that match the current manifest. The practical goal is to avoid redownloading matching data, not to force every byte from one platform or build into another.

Troubleshooting decision tree

Symptom Likely cause Action
None of the games appears in the library. The wrong directory was added. In Settings > Storage, add the directory one level above steamapps. Do not select steamapps itself.
Games appear but show Install. Steam has not associated the copied files with the current library, or the manifests were not copied. Start the install into the same copied library, let Steam discover existing files, then run Verify integrity of game files.
Steam starts a very large download. The files are from a different platform, branch, language set, or build, or the destination path is wrong. Pause and check the selected library, platform and branch settings, then resume. Only matching files can be reused.
Proton reports that a prefix is not owned by you. The destination is owned by another user or the mount does not provide suitable Linux permissions. Inspect ownership and mount options, correct the copied library for your user, or move compatdata to a Linux-native filesystem.
Flatpak Steam cannot see the drive. The sandbox lacks permission for the destination path. Grant the Flatpak access, restart Steam, and add the library root again through Settings > Storage.
The game launches but saves are missing. The save was not covered by Cloud, remains in the old userdata tree, or lives inside a Proton prefix or game-specific directory. Check Cloud status, keep the old backup, and inspect the relevant app ID prefix and documented save path.
A native Linux game will not use the copied Windows files. Native and Windows depots are different. Allow Steam to obtain the Linux-specific files required by the selected installation.

Final validation checklist

  • The copied library root contains steamapps directly beneath it.
  • The backup of steamapps is stored separately from the working copy.
  • App manifests, common, shadercache, and any required compatdata were copied.
  • userdata and non-Cloud save folders have a separate backup.
  • The destination is writable by your Linux user and, for permanent use, is preferably on a Linux-native filesystem.
  • Steam was restarted after any Flatpak permission change.
  • The library was added through Settings > Storage using the parent of steamapps.
  • Games that initially showed Install were pointed at the copied root and verified.
  • At least one native Linux game and one Proton game launched before the old copy was deleted.
