You can use Markdown as an agent’s source format, but Substack’s editor is the publishing destination—not a Markdown renderer. The dependable approach is to transfer or convert the draft, review its formatting in Substack, and publish from the editor. Substack Support’s Markdown guidance says, “We do not currently support Markdown in the post editor,” though that page was last updated December 12, 2019, so treat it as dated guidance rather than a newly verified product guarantee.

What happens when you paste Markdown into Substack?

Markdown syntax such as # Heading, **bold**, and - list item is plain text unless the destination interprets it. Substack Support’s Markdown support page states that Markdown is not supported directly in the post editor. Because its displayed update date is December 12, 2019, check the result in the current editor rather than assuming the statement describes every later change.

For an agent-generated draft, keep the original Markdown as the editable source, then transfer it into a Substack draft using a conversion step or careful editor formatting. Do not assume that pasting raw Markdown will turn its markers into headings, lists, links, or emphasis.

How to move an agent’s Markdown draft into Substack

  1. Review the source. Check the Markdown for a clear title, heading hierarchy, complete links, image references, and code that should remain literal. Remove accidental instructions or private content before sending the text to the publication editor.
  2. Create a Substack draft. In the publication Dashboard, choose Create and then Article. Substack’s publishing instructions describe this flow for desktop and mobile web; drafts save automatically.
  3. Transfer and format the content. Convert the Markdown to editor-ready content or paste and format it in the draft. Inspect headings, paragraphs, lists, bold and italic text, blockquotes, links, and images in the editor. A successful conversion should be verified in the actual draft, not inferred from a tool’s feature list.
  4. Use Substack’s code-block control for code. In a web draft, select More, then Code block. Substack’s instructions say you can choose a language or paste code for automatic detection. The resulting code block is supported in email newsletters, on the web, and in the Substack app. See Substack’s code-block instructions.
  5. Preview before publishing. Check the rendered post for broken links, missing images, awkward spacing, incorrect heading levels, and code that has lost indentation. Make corrections in the editor before choosing the audience and delivery settings.

Choose who receives the post and when

After drafting, select Continue to review publishing options. Substack’s publishing guide covers audience, comments, preview, tags, delivery, and optional scheduling. Make these choices deliberately: the default is web publication plus email and app inbox delivery. To publish on the web without sending it to subscribers, uncheck email and app delivery before publishing.

  • Audience: Select the intended readership, including whether the post is for free or paid subscribers.
  • Comments and tags: Set whether comments are enabled and add relevant tags if needed.
  • Paid preview: If the post includes a paid-subscriber preview, check the preview boundary before publishing.
  • Delivery: Decide whether the post should go to the web only or also to subscribers by email and in the app inbox.
  • Timing: Publish now or set an optional scheduled time.

Substack says an emailed post cannot be resent. Edits to a published post appear on the web and in Substack apps, so confirm the draft and its distribution settings before sending. The current options and workflow are described in Substack’s publishing guide, which displays an update date of June 9, 2026.

Should you automate Markdown conversion with an agent skill?

Third-party projects can reduce repetitive conversion work, but their documentation is not an official Substack guarantee. The public apetcu/substack-skill repository describes conversion for headings, lists, code, blockquotes, images, bold, italics, and links. It also documents draft and publish modes and a dry-run preview. These are the repository’s claims, not independently verified results or an endorsement by Substack. If you use a conversion skill, begin with a preview or draft and inspect the output before publishing.

Another third-party project, the eigenhectare substack-api README, describes cookie-based session setup, draft mode, duplicate checking, and an environment-variable email gate. Its documentation says Substack has no official API and warns that its approach relies on private endpoints that can break. That means automation may require managing account-session cookies and adapting to endpoint changes; it is not equivalent to a supported publishing integration. Do not send a post directly to subscribers until you have reviewed both the content and the distribution controls in Substack.

Which workflow fits your use?

  • One-off post or maximum control: Transfer the draft into Substack and format or correct it in the editor.
  • Repeated Markdown publishing: A third-party conversion skill may help if you can review a preview or draft and confirm formatting before publication.
  • Automated publishing through private endpoints: Use only if you accept session-credential handling and the possibility that the integration will stop working; prefer draft-first operation over direct publishing.
