Move an Affinity project only after checking the app versions. As of October 16, 2026, the current Affinity desktop app is available for macOS, while Affinity’s official download page lists the new iPad version as “coming soon.” The newer desktop app can open files made in Affinity V1 or V2, but V1/V2 apps—including V2 on iPad—cannot open files saved by the newer Affinity app. If your iPad still runs V2, keep a V2 copy and do not overwrite it with a file saved by the newer desktop app.
For a compatible pair, transfer the native .afdesign, .afphoto, or .afpub file through a local or cloud location that appears in iPadOS Files. Bring every linked image and text file with the project, install the original fonts on the destination device, then verify links, text flow, line breaks, and placed-image crops before saving production changes.
Check the Affinity version before moving anything
Version compatibility is the first transfer decision, not a troubleshooting step after a failed opening. Affinity’s current download FAQ says the new desktop version can open all files created in V2, but older versions—including V2 on iPad—cannot open files created or saved in the newer app, Affinity by Canva.

The official page gives no release date for the new Affinity iPad app and recommends continuing to run V2 independently while using the new desktop app. Therefore, “the same Affinity version” means the actual app generation on each device, not merely the product name or file extension.

Make a two-file safety rule
- Keep an untouched source file in the version your iPad can open.
- Work on a duplicate when testing the newer desktop app.
- Give the copies unambiguous names such as
Project_V2.afdesignandProject_NewDesktop.afdesign. - Never save over the V2 copy from the newer desktop app.
Prepare a project package on the Mac
A native Affinity file is not necessarily self-contained. Affinity lets placed images be embedded or linked, and it also supports importing text files as linked resources. An embedded resource is stored in the document. A linked resource remains outside it and can be edited independently, so moving only the .afdesign, .afphoto, or .afpub file can leave the iPad without the files it needs.
1. Create a reversible working copy
- Close the project in Affinity on the Mac so the file is not being changed while you copy it.
- Duplicate the native file into a transfer folder.
- Keep the original outside that folder as a rollback copy.
- If you must use the newer desktop app, retain a separate V2 version for the iPad.
This arrangement gives you a recovery point if a font is substituted, a link cannot be found, or the destination app cannot open the saved version.
2. Decide whether to embed or link placed resources
Embedding placed images where practical makes the document more portable because those images travel inside the Affinity file. It does not remove the need to install fonts, and it does not convert linked text files automatically. If links must remain links, create a clearly organized folder containing the native Affinity file and every linked image and text file.
Preserve the relative arrangement of the project folder when copying it. If the destination app cannot find a linked file at the expected location, you will need to reconnect it before editing. Do not scatter linked resources across unrelated folders; a single project folder makes the transfer and later backup easier to audit.

3. Record the fonts used by the project
Font files are not carried inside an ordinary project transfer. Before leaving the Mac, make a list of the fonts used in headings, body text, captions, text frames, and imported text. Confirm that you are allowed to install and use each font on the iPad. A font that is available on the Mac but not licensed for another device should not be copied or installed without permission.

There is no universal best storage location. The deciding test is whether the iPad can browse to the location in Files and whether the linked resources are available there with their expected arrangement.
Move a Mac project to the iPad
- Confirm the file generation. Check whether the file was last saved by V1, V2, or the newer desktop app. If the iPad runs V2, select the V2 copy.
- Finish the project package. Place the native Affinity file and, when needed, its linked images and linked text files in one organized folder. Embed placed images where that is practical for a self-contained document.
- Copy the package to a reachable location. Use a local or cloud location that the iPad can browse in the Files app. Affinity’s iPad help documents choosing a local or cloud location for templates and opening files from Files; the same reachability principle is essential for a project transfer.
- Install fonts before opening for production work. Install the original font on the iPad through the operating system or a font manager, subject to its license. If you open first, Affinity may display a substitute and mark the original as missing.
- Open the file from Files. Browse to the copied
.afdesign,.afphoto, or.afpubfile and open it with the compatible Affinity app. - Resolve missing fonts and links. Use Font Manager to locate entries marked Missing. Install the original fonts, reconnect linked resources if required, and reopen the document.
- Inspect before saving. Compare text flow, line breaks, placed-image crops, and every linked image or text resource with the Mac version. Save a new destination copy only after those checks pass.
Move an iPad project back to the Mac
The reverse direction uses the same controls, but the version check is especially important when the iPad still runs V2. A V2 iPad file can be opened by the newer desktop app according to Affinity’s FAQ. After opening it on the Mac, keep the original V2 file untouched if you may need to return to the iPad’s V2 app.
- On the iPad, close the document and copy the native file to a local or cloud Files location.
- Copy every external linked image and linked text file into the same project folder.
- On the Mac, duplicate the incoming file before opening it.
- Open the duplicate in the compatible Affinity desktop version.
- Use Font Manager to identify any fonts marked Missing and install the originals on the Mac before making layout changes.
- Check links, text flow, line breaks, and placed-image crops, then save a Mac working copy while retaining the iPad source.
Prevent font substitution from changing the layout
Affinity’s official wording in its Managing fonts help is: “When you open a document that uses fonts not installed on your device, Affinity substitutes alternative fonts.” The substitute is a display fallback. The original font remains applied to the document and appears as Missing until you install it or deliberately replace it.

Use Font Manager as a preflight check
- Open Font Manager in the destination Affinity app.
- Review each entry marked Missing.
- Install the original font on the destination device through the operating system or a font manager.
- Reopen the project so Affinity can use the installed font.
- Inspect every text area that could have changed dimensions, including headings, captions, and imported text.
Installing the correct font is preferable to accepting a substitute when the document must match the Mac version. If the original cannot be installed because of licensing or availability, replace it deliberately and treat the resulting text layout as a new edit: check line breaks, text-frame overflow, alignment, and downstream page or artboard changes.
Keep linked images and text files available
How embedded and linked resources differ
- Embedded image: stored in the Affinity document and transferred with it.
- Linked image: stored outside the document; the project must retain access to that external file.
- Linked text file: imported as an external resource that can be edited independently; it must travel with the project as well.
A link can fail even when the native file opens normally. The destination app may simply be unable to reach the external file at the location recorded by the document. Copying the linked files with the project and preserving their relative location gives the iPad the best chance of resolving them without manual repair.
Choose a self-contained package when handoffs are frequent
For a project that moves repeatedly between Mac and iPad, embed placed images where practical and keep any unavoidable linked resources in a single folder beside the native file. This is not a substitute for a backup: maintain a separate untouched copy and preserve the V2 version when the iPad uses V2.

Validate the document after it opens
Opening without an error does not prove that the project is production-ready. Complete this check on the destination device before editing:

- The file opens from the intended local or cloud location in Files.
- A new destination copy is saved without overwriting the source or the version-safe backup.
Troubleshoot the common transfer failures
The iPad says the file cannot be opened
Check which app saved the file. If it was saved by the newer Affinity desktop app and the iPad runs V1 or V2, the failure is expected: older apps cannot open files created or saved by the newer app. Return to the preserved V2 copy for the iPad, or continue the newer-app version on the Mac until a compatible iPad release is available.
Fonts appear as Missing
Open Font Manager and identify the missing entries. Install the original fonts on the iPad through the operating system or a font manager, then reopen the document. Do not assume that a visually similar substitute preserves the layout; substitution can change line breaks and text flow.
Images or imported text are missing
Determine whether the resource was linked rather than embedded. Copy the missing file into the project folder, preserve the relative arrangement used by the source document, and reconnect it if the destination app requests a location. If the resource must always travel with the file, embed the placed image where practical in a new working copy.

Check fonts first, because a missing font causes Affinity to substitute an alternative. Then compare the source and destination text frames for overflow, line breaks, and imported linked text. Restore the original font or deliberately revise the typography, and recheck every dependent frame before saving.

Placed-image crops look different
Verify that the destination is displaying the same linked or embedded image, not a missing or replaced resource. Compare the crop and position with the source document before making edits. Save only after the intended image is resolved.
The project folder is visible on the Mac but not on the iPad
Move or copy the package to a local or cloud location that appears in iPadOS Files. Affinity’s documented iPad workflow depends on browsing a supported location from Files; a folder that is not exposed there cannot be opened through that workflow.
A repeatable handoff checklist
- Identify the source app generation and the iPad app generation.
- Preserve a source file and, when required, a separate V2 copy.
- Duplicate the file into a transfer folder.
- Embed placed images where practical, or include every linked image and text file.
- Keep the linked resources in the expected relative arrangement.
- Install licensed fonts on the destination device before production edits.
- Copy the package to a local or cloud location visible in Files.
- Open the native file with the compatible Affinity app.
- Use Font Manager to resolve entries marked Missing.
- Check links, text flow, line breaks, and image crops.
- Save a new destination copy without overwriting the source or version-safe backup.
What the current iPad transition means for your workflow
The new desktop app and the existing V2 iPad app should be treated as separate lanes until the new iPad version is released. The desktop app can open V1/V2 files, which allows older projects to be brought forward on macOS. The reverse is not symmetrical: a file saved by the newer app cannot be returned to V1/V2 iPad apps. Keeping a V2 copy, packaging external resources, and installing fonts before opening prevents a version upgrade from becoming an irreversible handoff.
