To move a WordPress site from WP Engine, copy both the database and the wp-content directory to the new server, update the destination configuration, test the copy before changing DNS, then complete the DNS, URL, and SSL cutover. Keep the WP Engine site and original backups available until the new host has passed application checks and DNS propagation is complete.
What a complete WP Engine migration includes
A WordPress site is more than its posts and pages. A full move has two essential data sets:
- The database: posts, pages, users, comments, settings, plugin data, orders, and other site records.
wp-content: themes, plugins, uploads, and media. It is often the largest part of the transfer.
An XML content export is not a complete site migration. It does not reproduce the full database, installed plugins, theme files, media library, or configuration. Preserve a complete SQL backup and a copy of wp-content before you begin.
You can keep the same public domain. The domain does not have to move from its registrar; you change the DNS records so the domain resolves to the new host. If the domain itself is changing, you also have to update WordPress URL values and old-domain references.

Decide how to migrate
Choose the route that matches your access, site complexity, and tolerance for downtime. WP Engine documents both an automated migration-plugin route and a manual database-and-files route.

Large databases, membership records, ecommerce orders, multisite networks, and heavy media libraries need more validation than a small brochure site. High-traffic sites should plan a short content freeze and a final synchronization immediately before DNS changes.

Make a written inventory. It becomes your migration checklist and your rollback record.
- Primary domain, alternate domains, staging domains, and every subdomain.
- Current DNS records, including A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, and verification records.
- Email services and any forms or transactional mail that depend on separate DNS records.
- Redirects, rewrite rules, scheduled tasks (cron jobs), and server-level settings.
- PHP version, WordPress version, active plugins, themes, mu-plugins, and custom code.
- Media libraries, downloadable files, user accounts, membership data, and ecommerce data.
- Analytics, search-console verification, payment gateways, webhooks, APIs, and other integrations.
- SSL certificates and any forced-HTTPS or security settings.
Record the current WordPress Address and Site Address values, normally shown under Settings → General. Do not cancel WP Engine or remove the old environment yet.
Back up WP Engine and choose a change window
Create and download a database export in SQL format and retain the original backup without editing it. Also obtain a complete copy of wp-content. Keep at least one copy outside the hosting account.
For a quiet site, you can migrate and then verify immediately. For a busy site, announce a short content freeze or maintenance window. Posts, orders, registrations, comments, and form submissions created after the first export will not exist in that copy; they must be captured by a final synchronization.

1. Prepare WordPress at the new host
Create the destination WordPress environment and its database. Confirm the destination’s PHP and database versions meet the requirements of your WordPress core, plugins, and theme. Obtain the database name, username, password, host, and table prefix that the new environment expects.

If the new host supplies a temporary URL, use it only for staging. The final test should use the real domain mapped privately to the new server so absolute URLs, cookies, redirects, and SSL behavior are realistic.
2. Export the database
Export the WP Engine database as SQL using the database tool supplied by the host. The SQL contains the records that recreate posts, comments, options, users, plugin data, and (for an ecommerce site) order-related data. Download the file and retain the untouched original.
Do not treat a WordPress export file as a substitute for this SQL export. The two formats serve different purposes; only the database export carries the complete site state required for a host-level move.
3. Copy wp-content
Download the entire wp-content directory, including plugins, themes, uploads, and any custom directories used by the site. SFTP or SSH can be used to transfer it. Check the resulting file count and size against the source and make sure hidden files and custom folders were not omitted.
Do not overwrite the original backup while creating archives or retrying a transfer. A second, independently verified copy gives you a recovery option if an upload is interrupted.
4. Import the files and SQL
Upload wp-content to the destination WordPress directory. Import the SQL file into the destination database using the host’s database interface or command-line access. If the destination generated a different table prefix, either configure WordPress to use the imported prefix or adjust the destination configuration consistently; do not mix prefixes accidentally.
Edit the destination wp-config.php so its database name, user, password, host, and table prefix match the imported database. Preserve security keys and other site-specific settings unless the destination host instructs you to change them. Check file ownership and permissions after the upload so PHP can read plugins, themes, and uploads without making the whole directory writable.

5. Handle URLs and domain changes
If you are keeping exactly the same domain and protocol, leave the WordPress URL values unchanged while you test. You may still need to remove WP Engine-specific references in configuration or integration settings.
If the domain changes, update the home and siteurl values and perform a database-wide search and replace with a tool that understands serialized data. A blind SQL text replacement can corrupt serialized plugin and theme settings. Search for the old domain in menus, widgets, attachment URLs, custom fields, redirects, and plugin configuration.
WordPress documentation also warns that hard-coded URLs can remain in theme files. Search the theme and custom code separately; a database replacement cannot change a URL embedded in PHP, JavaScript, CSS, or a template file. Replace only the intended host and preserve the protocol decision (HTTP versus HTTPS) consistently.
6. Recreate server-side services
Restore scheduled tasks, redirects, PHP settings, caching rules, image-processing limits, and any web-server configuration required by the application. Re-enter API keys or webhook endpoints that are restricted to the old server or domain. Verify that the destination can send mail through the intended provider; moving web files does not automatically move email service.
Test the new copy before DNS changes
WP Engine documents testing without changing public DNS by editing your computer’s hosts file. Map the real domain to the new server’s IP address on your test computer, then browse the site as if the cutover had already occurred. Other visitors will continue reaching WP Engine while you test.
Use a private browser window and clear caches between tests. Check the site over HTTPS if the destination certificate is already installed; otherwise, install the certificate before final cutover so visitors do not encounter certificate warnings.

Test both logged-in and logged-out views. Confirm that canonical tags, robots rules, XML sitemaps, redirects, and analytics use the intended domain. Compare several old URLs with their new responses rather than checking only the home page.

Synchronize changes made during testing
The destination is a copy, not a live mirror. If visitors can create content while you test, the source may gain posts, comments, users, orders, or form submissions that are absent from the destination.

- Take a fresh database export from WP Engine after the freeze begins.
- Copy any files added since the first transfer, particularly new uploads.
- Import or merge those changes into the destination using the same controlled procedure.
- Repeat the critical tests, then proceed directly to DNS cutover.
Do not casually import a second full database over a destination that has already collected new orders or users. Decide which environment is authoritative for the final window and use a migration or merge procedure that preserves those records.
Cut over the domain, DNS, and SSL
WP Engine’s domain guidance places DNS changes, destination-domain configuration, URL updates, optional search-and-replace, and SSL in the cutover sequence. Use this order:
- Add the production domain to the new host and confirm the web server serves the migrated site for that hostname.
- Point the domain’s A, AAAA, or CNAME record to the destination value supplied by the new host. Keep unrelated MX, TXT, and verification records unless they are intentionally changing.
- Update WordPress Address and Site Address only if the domain or protocol is changing. Keep both values consistent with the public HTTPS URL.
- Install or issue the destination SSL certificate and force HTTPS only after the certificate works for the production hostname.
- Recheck redirects, canonical URLs, media, forms, checkout, webhooks, and scheduled jobs from a network that is resolving the new DNS.
DNS propagation is not instantaneous. Different resolvers may continue using cached answers, so leave WP Engine online and functional while traffic shifts. Changing DNS does not require transferring the domain registrar; it only changes where the existing domain resolves.

For the first propagation period, watch uptime, PHP and web-server logs, error rates, form deliveries, orders, login failures, search-console coverage, and analytics. Ask users or staff to report missing media, redirect loops, or broken account actions.
Retain the original SQL export, the original wp-content copy, the DNS values, and your inventory. If a serious defect appears, restore DNS to WP Engine while you correct the destination, then repeat the final synchronization before trying again. Remove the old environment only after the new site is stable, backups are running, and no required service still depends on WP Engine.
Troubleshooting common migration failures
The site shows a database connection error
Recheck the destination database name, user, password, host, and table prefix in wp-config.php. Confirm that the SQL import completed and that the database user has access to the imported schema.

Images or downloads return 404 errors
Verify that the complete wp-content/uploads tree was copied, including subdirectories and file names. Check permissions and confirm that attachment URLs point to the intended domain and protocol.
The site redirects to WP Engine or the wrong domain
Inspect the WordPress URL settings, database references, redirect rules, caching layers, and hard-coded theme or custom-code URLs. Clear application and browser caches only after correcting the underlying value.

Users are repeatedly logged out
Check that the browser is reaching one hostname consistently, HTTPS is configured correctly, and cookie-related URL settings are not split between the old and new domains. Test in a private window after DNS and certificate changes.
Forms, cron jobs, or webhooks stopped working
Compare the inventory with the destination configuration. Recreate scheduled tasks, update callback allowlists, verify outbound mail credentials, and check destination logs for blocked requests or PHP errors.
Orders or new posts are missing
The destination was probably tested from an old snapshot. Stop accepting changes briefly, create a fresh source export and file sync, and perform the planned final synchronization before pointing DNS again.
When a managed migration is the safer choice
Use migration assistance when you cannot obtain database or SFTP access, the site is a multisite or high-volume ecommerce installation, or downtime would be costly. Before authorizing work, ask whether the service includes the database, wp-content, serialized-data-safe URL replacement, DNS guidance, SSL, staging tests, and a final synchronization. Get the rollback procedure and backup retention period in writing.
