Move a vBulletin forum in two coordinated parts: relocate the installation files into the web document root, then remove the subfolder from vBulletin’s URL, rewrite, and cookie settings. Finish with compatibility tests and permanent redirects from the old paths. Changing only the files or only the URL setting will usually produce broken links, failed logins, or redirect loops.
What changes when a forum moves to the root
Assume the existing forum is available at https://example.com/forums and the domain root is https://example.com. The move affects four separate layers:
- Filesystem: the contents of the vBulletin installation, including attachments, avatars, and custom uploads, move from the
forumsdirectory into the server’s document root. - Canonical URL: the Forum URL in AdminCP and, where used,
$config['baseurl']must become the root URL without a trailing slash. - Routing: rewrite rules must run from the root configuration rather than from a subfolder configuration.
- Browser state: the cookie path must normally be
/, otherwise existing or new sessions may not authenticate correctly.
The database is not moved as a separate operation in this procedure. URL and presentation values stored in vBulletin are updated after the files are in their new location.
Before touching the live forum
Make recoverable backups
Take a verified database dump and copy the entire current installation before changing anything. Include the upload directories that contain attachments, avatars, profile pictures, style assets, and custom files. A backup is useful only if you can restore it, so confirm that the dump opens successfully and that the file archive contains the expected directories and configuration files.

Record the current state
- Write down the exact old base URL, including whether the site uses HTTPS.
- Record the current vBulletin major version and PHP, web-server, and database versions.
- Save the existing document-root configuration,
.htaccessor IIS URL Rewrite rules, and any NGINX server block used for the forum. - Capture representative legacy URLs: the home page, a forum, a thread, a paginated thread, a search result, an attachment, and an image.
- List custom integrations, scheduled tasks, CDN paths, and separate subdomains that may rely on the old location.
Schedule a maintenance window
Put the forum in maintenance mode or otherwise prevent writes while the final file copy and configuration changes occur. This avoids losing posts or uploads that arrive after the backup. Keep the old directory intact until the root installation has passed testing; it is your fastest rollback option.
Step 1: Move the vBulletin files into the document root
- Identify the web server’s document root for
example.com. On shared hosting this is often a directory namedpublic_html,www, or the domain’s assigned root; use the path configured by the host rather than guessing. - Copy or move the contents of the existing vBulletin directory, not merely the directory itself, into that document root. The root should contain vBulletin’s entry files and directories directly, rather than
/forums/index.php. - Preserve ownership, permissions, symbolic links, and case-sensitive filenames. Keep attachments, avatars, custom uploads, styles, and language files in their relative locations.
- Do not delete the old directory yet. If the copy was made rather than moved, prevent the old copy from serving pages after cutover so search engines and users do not see two live installations.
The official vBulletin installation layout places the uploaded package contents directly in the web-publishing folder for a root installation. A hosting migration should therefore reproduce that layout at the domain root, including all subdirectories used by the forum.

- Sign in to the vBulletin AdminCP during the maintenance window.
- Open Settings > Options > Site Name / URL / Contact Details.
- Change Forum URL from
https://example.com/forumstohttps://example.com. - Save the setting and rebuild or refresh the options cache if your vBulletin version presents that requirement.
Do not add a trailing slash to the Forum URL. The presentation configuration documentation likewise specifies that the base URL should not include a trailing slash. If the site has separate HTTP and HTTPS addresses, use the HTTPS canonical URL only when the server already redirects or serves HTTPS consistently; otherwise correct the TLS and redirect arrangement before the move.
Step 3: Update presentation configuration when it is used
Some installations define the public URL in the presentation config.php as well as in AdminCP. Open the copy now located in the document root and check these variables:

$config['baseurl_login'] = 'https://example.com';Use the actual login URL if your installation deliberately separates it; otherwise keep it aligned with the root URL. Both values should omit the old subfolder and the trailing slash.
- Keep the variable names exactly as supplied by vBulletin.
- Do not add whitespace, a blank line, or a byte-order mark before the opening
<?phptag. - Preserve valid PHP quoting and semicolons.
- Change only the URL values needed for this move; do not replace the rest of the configuration from memory.
A malformed configuration file can send output before HTTP headers and cause header or session errors. If the forum becomes unavailable immediately after editing, restore the backup copy and compare the file character by character.
Step 4: Put URL-rewrite rules at the root
vBulletin uses URL rewrites for Friendly URL routing. The rules must be loaded by the server configuration that governs the document root.
Apache
- Check whether the root already has an
.htaccessfile used by another application. - If no root file exists, rename vBulletin’s distributed
htaccess.txtto.htaccessand place it in the document root. - If a root file already exists, merge the vBulletin rules into it instead of overwriting unrelated redirects, security rules, or PHP settings.
- Remove a former
/forums/prefix from rules that were written specifically for the old location. ARewriteBasefor a subdirectory belongs only in an installation that remains in that subdirectory. - Confirm that Apache permits overrides for the document root and that
mod_rewriteis enabled. Without rewrite support, Friendly URLs may return 404 responses even though the forum home page loads.
Test the merged file for syntax and redirect loops before deleting the old configuration. A rule that redirects every request to the root, for example, can also redirect CSS, images, AdminCP, and the destination of its own redirect.

IIS
Use IIS URL Rewrite for the site that now owns the domain root. Port the vBulletin rules into the root site’s configuration, remove the old subfolder assumption, and verify that the IIS feature is installed and enabled. A rule copied into a different IIS application can be syntactically valid yet never execute for the forum.
NGINX
NGINX does not read .htaccess. Start with the NGINX configuration supplied for your vBulletin version and adapt its root path and location blocks to the new document root. Reload NGINX only after validating the configuration, then test static files, PHP requests, Friendly URLs, and the administrative paths.
Step 5: Correct cookie settings
- In AdminCP, open Settings > Options > Cookie and HTTP Header Options.
- Set Path to Save Cookies to
/. - Leave Cookie Domain blank unless you intentionally need one cookie shared across a parent domain or multiple subdomains.
- Save the setting, clear the relevant browser cookies, and start a fresh session.
Cookie paths must end in a slash. A path such as /forums/ restricts the browser’s session cookie to the old directory, so a visitor can appear logged in on a legacy page but anonymous at the root. An incorrect domain value can create a similar symptom or expose a session to hosts that should not receive it.
Compare server implementations before choosing a fix

All three approaches can preserve permanent redirects, but the exact syntax and the ability to edit it depend on the host. If a shared host does not permit custom rules, ask support whether root-level rewrites and 301 redirects are available before scheduling the move.

Step 6: Clear caches and perform a functional test
Refresh vBulletin’s options or system cache when your version requires it. Then test from a private browser window and from a browser that held an existing login. Check each item while the maintenance window is still active:

Use browser developer tools and the server access log to identify whether a failure is a 404, a redirect loop, a blocked asset, or an authentication problem. Those symptoms point to different layers and should not be fixed by changing unrelated settings.
Step 7: Redirect the old subfolder permanently
After the root installation works, send old URLs to their equivalent new URLs with HTTP 301 redirects. Redirects protect bookmarks, inbound links, and search visibility, but there is no universal rule that can map every vBulletin URL format correctly.
- Build a mapping from the representative old URLs you recorded to their new root equivalents.
- Place the redirect in the server configuration that still receives requests for
/forums/, not in a file that the old path can no longer reach. - Preserve query strings when they carry pagination, search terms, or other meaningful parameters.
- Redirect directly to the final HTTPS root URL if HTTPS is canonical; avoid a chain from old HTTP subfolder to new HTTP root to HTTPS.
- Test both a directory URL and several deep links. Confirm that the destination does not redirect back to the old path.
Keep the redirect rules after the cutover. Removing them immediately converts useful legacy links into 404 responses. Do not redirect every unknown URL to the home page; a precise equivalent or a truthful 404 is better for users and crawlers.

Choose the option that gives you a verified backup and a practical rollback, not merely the lowest-effort file copy. A host that cannot provide rewrite access may require a different plan or a support-assisted configuration.
Final cutover checklist
- Database dump and complete file backup have been verified.
- Maintenance mode is enabled and the old URL is recorded.
- Files, attachments, avatars, and custom uploads are present in the document root.
- AdminCP Forum URL is the root URL with no trailing slash.
$config['baseurl']and, where applicable,$config['baseurl_login']match the root URL and contain no trailing slash.- Root rewrite rules are active for the actual server stack.
- Cookie path is
/; cookie domain is blank unless deliberate sharing is required. - Options and application caches have been refreshed as required by the installed version.
- Anonymous and existing logged-in sessions pass the complete functional test.
- Representative old URLs return direct 301 redirects to equivalent root URLs.
- Logs and webmaster tools are being monitored for 404s, redirect chains, mixed content, and authentication failures.
Monitor the first days after launch
Keep the old backup and rollback plan available while traffic settles. Review web-server logs for requests to the obsolete path, unexpected 404s, repeated redirects, and permission errors. Check webmaster tools for newly discovered broken URLs and inspect mixed-content warnings if the canonical URL changed to HTTPS. Authentication failures that appear only for returning users usually indicate stale cookies or a domain/path mismatch; failures for everyone more often indicate the canonical URL, configuration file, or rewrite layer.

Once logs show that legitimate legacy requests are being redirected and new root URLs remain stable, remove only genuinely unused duplicate files. Retain the backup, redirect rules, and a record of the final configuration so a later vBulletin upgrade or server migration does not recreate the subfolder assumptions.
