To move a Minecraft: Java Edition single-player world, copy its world folder from %APPDATA%.minecraftsaves on Windows to the Linux server, then set level-name in server.properties to that folder’s exact name. Stop both Minecraft and the server before copying, keep a complete backup, and use a server version and Java runtime compatible with the world. The server must find level.dat directly inside the selected folder.
Before you start: confirm the edition, version and Java runtime
This procedure is for Minecraft: Java Edition. The official server download guidance states that its server setup is compatible only with Java Edition. A Bedrock Dedicated Server uses a different package and directory layout, so a Bedrock world must not be dropped into a Java server directory.
- Edition: Confirm that the world was created in Java Edition, not Bedrock Edition.
- Version: Prefer the same Minecraft version on the Linux server that was used on Windows. If you must upgrade, use a documented upgrade path and make a backup first.
- Java: Install the Java runtime required by the server version. Java Edition 26.1 requires Java 25. Older server releases may require a different Java version.
- Server software: Download the server JAR for the intended Minecraft release and keep it in its own Linux directory.
Do not open an important world in a newer version simply to test it and then move it back to an older server. Minecraft can make one-way data changes during an upgrade. Keep the original Windows copy untouched until the Linux instance has been checked.
What you are actually moving
A Java single-player save is a directory, not one standalone file. The directory contains the world metadata, terrain, player data, advancements, dimensions and other files. The most important placement check is that level.dat is immediately inside the world directory.

For example, this is a correctly nested layout:
my-world/
level.dat
region/
playerdata/
advancements/
data/This layout is wrong because the server will see an extra wrapper directory:
my-world.zip/
my-world/
level.datAfter extracting, place the inner my-world directory in the server directory. The ZIP itself is useful as a transport copy, but the server normally loads an extracted folder.

Locate and inspect the Windows world
Open the Java saves directory
- Exit Minecraft completely. Wait for the game and launcher to finish writing files.
- Press
Win+R. - Enter
%APPDATA%.minecraftsavesand press Enter. - Each subfolder is a Java world. Open likely candidates and check the folder’s modified date and contents.
The correct world folder should contain level.dat at its top level. If you see only another folder before reaching level.dat, you are looking at an extra extraction or backup wrapper rather than the folder the server should load.
Identify the correct save safely
Use the world name shown in Minecraft’s Singleplayer list together with the folder’s modified time. If two folders look similar, do not guess: open the world in Minecraft, note a landmark or your player location, exit, and match that save’s timestamp. Never rename or delete the original while you are still identifying it.
Stop everything and make a complete backup
A migration is safest when no process is writing to the world. Exit the Windows game before copying. If a Linux server already exists, stop it through its hosting panel, terminal session or service manager and wait for the console to report a clean shutdown.
Make at least one complete, separate copy of the Windows world before transferring anything. A ZIP archive is convenient because it preserves the directory as one file; an uncompressed duplicate is also useful for quick recovery. Retain the original and the transfer archive until the Linux copy has been opened and verified.

Do not copy only region or only your player file. Those partial copies omit world metadata and can produce missing terrain, incorrect settings or an apparently new world.
Choose a way to transfer the folder
Minecraft does not require a particular physical device or transfer protocol. Choose based on where the Linux host is located and how much recovery protection you need.

For a remote Linux server, SFTP is a practical default because it encrypts the transfer and commonly supports resuming. A ZIP through a hosting panel is often easier when the host provides a file manager. The transfer method does not change the world data.
Prepare the Linux server directory
Create a dedicated directory and install Java
Use a directory dedicated to this Minecraft instance rather than mixing the server files with unrelated applications. Install the Java runtime required by the chosen Minecraft release and confirm that the command resolves to the expected version:

java -versionFor Java Edition 26.1, the required runtime is Java 25. If java -version reports an older runtime, install or select Java 25 before starting a 26.1 server. For another Minecraft release, follow that release’s documented Java requirement.
Run the server once
Copy the matching server JAR into the dedicated directory. Run it once so it can create its initial files. A typical command is:

java -Xms2G -Xmx4G -jar server.jar --noguiReplace server.jar with the actual filename and adjust memory values to suit the machine. The command is an example; the essential requirements are the compatible Java runtime and the correct server JAR.
The first run normally creates eula.txt and server.properties. Stop the process after those files appear. Open eula.txt, read the license, and change eula=false to eula=true only if you accept it. Do not start the server with an unaccepted EULA.
Upload and install the world
Put the archive or folder in the server directory
Transfer the complete world folder, or transfer its ZIP and extract it on Linux. The destination is the directory used by the server process—the directory containing the server JAR and server.properties, unless your service explicitly configures another working directory.
After extraction, inspect the result. If the archive produced server-directory/my-world/level.dat, the nesting is correct. If it produced server-directory/my-world/my-world/level.dat, move the inner folder up one level or extract the archive again without the extra wrapper.
Set the exact world name
Open server.properties and find:
level-name=Set the value to the exact Linux folder name, including capitalization, spaces and punctuation. For a folder named my-world, use:
level-name=my-worldAlternatively, rename the uploaded folder to the name already specified by level-name. Do not set the property to a display name unless that is also the actual directory name. Save the file while the server is stopped.

If level-name points to a folder that does not exist, or if the expected level.dat is not directly inside it, the server can generate a fresh world instead of loading the save you uploaded.
Start the server and verify the migration
Read the startup console
Start the server with the compatible Java command. Watch the console rather than assuming that a successful process launch means the correct world loaded. Confirm that the startup messages reference the intended world and that the server completes its normal loading sequence without errors.
Join locally first
Before opening the server to other players, connect from the same network or machine if possible. Check all of the following:

- Your inventory, experience, health and player position are present.
- Advancements and statistics are intact.
- The Nether and End, or other dimensions used by the world, open correctly.
- Gamerules, difficulty, spawn point and other world settings match expectations.
- Recent builds and containers contain their expected items.
Walk beyond the initially loaded area only after these checks pass. This helps distinguish a correct migration with unexplored terrain from a newly generated world.
Keep the rollback copy
Do not delete the Windows save or the ZIP immediately after the first successful login. Keep the backup until players have used the Linux copy and you have confirmed that no files were omitted. If anything is missing, stop the server, preserve its current directory for diagnosis, and restore from the untouched backup rather than repeatedly overwriting files.

level-name does not match the folder
The most common cause is a spelling, capitalization or punctuation mismatch. Compare the value after level-name= character by character with the Linux directory name. A value such as level-name=My World does not select a folder named my-world.

An extra directory is nested inside the selected folder
Check the path the server is using. The selected directory must contain level.dat directly. If the path is world/world/level.dat, move the inner folder up one level or change level-name to the directory that directly contains the file.
The server was running during the copy
A live server can rewrite region files and metadata while you are replacing them. Stop it cleanly, restore the complete backup, verify ownership and permissions for the account running the server, and start again.
You uploaded the wrong edition’s files
Bedrock worlds do not use the Java save path or Java server format. Microsoft’s Bedrock Dedicated Server documentation places Bedrock worlds under worlds/ and requires its server.properties level-name to match the world folder. That layout is not interchangeable with a Java server.
The version or Java runtime is incompatible
Running a server release that is older than the world, or using an unsupported Java runtime, can prevent startup or cause conversion problems. Use the source world’s version where possible. For an upgrade, stop first, retain the backup, install the required Java version and follow the release’s documented conversion path.
Java 26.1 and the changed world layout
Java Edition 26.1 requires Java 25 and changes where Overworld data is stored. In that release, Overworld data moved from the world root to dimensions/minecraft/overworld. Tutorials written for earlier versions may show every dimension directory at the world root; that diagram is not reliable for 26.1 and newer.

Use a matching 26.1 server, allow the server to interpret the format, and keep a full backup before any version conversion. The key migration checks remain the same: the selected world folder contains level.dat directly, and level-name selects that folder.
Java and Bedrock are separate migration paths

A repeatable migration checklist
- Confirm Java Edition and record the source Minecraft version.
- Confirm the Linux server version and install its required Java runtime.
- Exit Minecraft and stop any existing server cleanly.
- Back up the entire Windows world, including
level.datand all subdirectories. - Open
%APPDATA%.minecraftsavesand identify the correct world folder. - Transfer the folder or a ZIP using a method appropriate to the host.
- Extract it so
level.datis directly inside the selected world folder. - Set
server.propertieslevel-nameto that folder’s exact name. - Start the server with the compatible Java command and inspect the console.
- Join locally, check terrain, player data, dimensions, advancements and gamerules, and retain the original backup.
When a managed Linux server changes the steps
A managed Minecraft host or Linux VPS may hide the operating-system details behind a control panel. The underlying migration is still the same: stop the instance, upload the complete Java world, extract it in the server’s configured directory, set level-name, and start the matching server version. Follow the provider’s file-permission and restart controls, but do not skip the backup or nesting checks. If the panel regenerates server.properties, verify level-name again after saving.
