You can move a full-tower PC into a smaller chassis safely only after proving that the exact motherboard, graphics card, cooler, power supply, drives and cables fit. Case labels such as “mid-tower” or “compact” are not compatibility standards. Measure your parts against the candidate case, document every connection, remove components in a controlled order, use only the correct motherboard standoffs, and test the system before closing it.

Start with compatibility, not disassembly

A case swap is successful when every existing component has both physical room and the right mounting or connector support. The target chassis must match the motherboard’s form factor and provide clearance for the parts installed around it. A smaller external volume can still have generous GPU space, while a slightly larger-looking case may reject a tall cooler or long power supply.

Confirm the motherboard form factor and dimensions

Read the motherboard manufacturer’s specification for the exact model. Common labels include ATX, Micro-ATX and Mini-ITX, but the label alone is not enough for unusual boards. Extended ATX (E-ATX) dimensions are not tightly standardized, so measure the board and compare those measurements with the case’s supported width, mounting pattern and cable-clearance notes. ASUS installation guidance specifically says to install only the standoffs that correspond to the motherboard’s screw holes.

Check every major clearance

Component or feature What to compare Why it can prevent a fit
Motherboard Form factor, actual width and length, mounting-hole pattern An E-ATX board can be wider than a case’s informal E-ATX claim, and an unsupported hole pattern cannot be safely improvised.
Graphics card Maximum card length, height, thickness or slot count, and power-plug clearance A card can fit its length specification yet collide with a front radiator, drive cage or side panel.
CPU cooler Maximum air-cooler height and surrounding socket/RAM clearance The side panel may not close, or a heatsink can interfere with memory or motherboard components.
Radiator and fans Radiator size, thickness, fan thickness and permitted mounting positions A published 240 mm or 360 mm position may not allow your radiator-and-fan combination in the chosen location.
Power supply PSU format, body length, modular-plug space and intake orientation Long PSUs can block drive mounts or leave insufficient room to bend cables.
Storage Number and location of 2.5-inch, 3.5-inch and M.2 devices; cage position Drive cages often share space with long graphics cards or radiator mounts.
Front I/O and headers USB, audio, power-switch, reset, LED and front-panel connector types Proprietary or differently arranged connectors may not reach or may not be electrically compatible.
Cable routing Behind-tray depth, pass-through locations and bend space at GPU and motherboard power sockets A case can technically contain the parts while making a safe, unstrained connection impossible.

MSI’s case-selection guidance emphasizes checking these dimensions and practical features against the actual components. Moving a drive cage or fan can change a published clearance, so evaluate the intended final layout rather than relying on a single maximum-length number.

Handle prebuilt and OEM systems as special cases

Before buying a chassis for a prebuilt computer, identify the exact system model and inspect the motherboard, power supply, cooler, front-panel wiring and mounting arrangement. Some OEM systems use nonstandard board dimensions, power connectors, front-panel plugs or PSU shapes. A standard retail case may not provide the matching brackets or pinout.

Check the system-specific warranty terms before opening or moving the computer. HP advises reviewing warranty language and contacting support while the system is covered. A case swap can be physically possible yet still affect warranty service, so record the original configuration and retain the old chassis and hardware.

Prepare the work area and protect your data

Back up important files before touching the hardware. A case move should not be your only copy of photos, documents, authentication keys or other irreplaceable data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Shut the operating system down completely. Turn off the power-supply switch if it has one and unplug the AC cable and all peripheral cables.
  2. Move the computer to a clean, flat, well-lit work surface away from carpet, pets and clutter. A large table gives you room to place panels and sort screws.
  3. Use an anti-static wrist strap connected as directed, or ground yourself by regularly touching grounded metal on the PC case. NVIDIA recommends a static bracelet or grounding on the case. Static control reduces risk but does not replace careful handling.
  4. Gather a Phillips screwdriver, a small container or magnetic tray for screws, labels or tape for unfamiliar cables, and the manuals for the motherboard, case and cooler.
  5. Photograph the interior from several angles before disconnecting anything. Capture front-panel headers, USB and audio plugs, fan direction, drive locations, power-cable paths and screw positions. Labels are worthwhile when several connectors look alike.

HP’s preparation guidance recommends waiting 30 minutes after shutdown. Treat that as HP’s manufacturer advice, not a universal electrical requirement; the essential steps are a complete shutdown, unplugging the system and discharging yourself safely before handling parts.

Remove the components in a controlled sequence

Keep the motherboard, processor and memory together when practical. Fewer removed parts mean fewer opportunities to bend pins, contaminate contacts or misplace hardware. Remove the cooler only when the target case requires it or when its mounting hardware prevents safe board removal.

1. Open the original chassis and document it

Remove both side panels and, if useful, the front or top panels. Photograph fan orientation: air normally enters through designated intake positions and leaves through exhaust positions, but the correct arrangement depends on the case. Note which cables are routed behind the motherboard tray and which are tied to removable drive cages.

2. Disconnect graphics and expansion cards

  1. Unplug the graphics card’s PCIe power connectors by pressing the release tab on each plug.
  2. Remove the case screws securing the card bracket.
  3. Press the motherboard’s PCIe retention clip to release the card from the slot.
  4. Hold the card by its edges, keep it level, and lift it gently. Do not pull against a still-locked clip or twist the card in the slot.
  5. Place it on an anti-static surface or in its original protective packaging. Remove other expansion cards the same way and record their slot order.

3. Remove storage drives

Disconnect drive power and data cables before removing 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch drives from their trays. Record which cable and bay belonged to each drive; this is especially useful when several SATA devices are present. M.2 drives normally remain on the motherboard unless the new layout requires access to their screws. If you remove an M.2 device, keep its tiny screw and thermal pad with it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Photograph and disconnect headers

Before unplugging, photograph the motherboard’s front-panel power-switch, reset, activity-LED and power-LED pins, plus front USB, USB-C, audio, fan and RGB headers. Disconnect by gripping the plug, not by pulling its wires. Use the motherboard manual to verify pinouts later rather than relying solely on memory or cable color.

5. Decide whether cooling hardware must come out

Leave an air cooler attached if the board can be lifted safely and the new case has adequate height. For a radiator, check whether its tubes and mounting hardware prevent removal of the board or PSU. If the cooler must be removed, follow its manufacturer’s procedure. Do not pry a cooler sideways from a processor that may be stuck to its base; loosen the mounting hardware evenly and lift according to the cooler instructions.

6. Remove the power supply and motherboard

Unplug the 24-pin motherboard cable, CPU power cable, GPU cables, drive power and any auxiliary leads. Remove the PSU’s rear screws and support its weight as you slide it out. Then remove the motherboard screws, keeping them separate from PSU and drive screws. Lift the board by its edges after confirming no cable or rear bracket is still attached. Keep the processor and memory installed when possible, as HP recommends.

Prepare the smaller chassis before installing hardware

Lay the empty case on its side and remove panels, filters and drive cages that obstruct the build. Read the case manual and identify the supplied standoffs, screws, brackets and I/O shield.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use only matching motherboard standoffs

Compare the board’s actual screw holes with the case’s standoff positions. Install or move standoffs so every hole is supported by a standoff, then remove every extra standoff that does not align with a hole. An extra metal post touching the underside of the board can short or physically damage it; ASUS explicitly warns against leaving unnecessary standoffs in place.

Plan airflow, radiator and PSU orientation

Before lowering in the motherboard, test-fit the radiator, fans, GPU and PSU. Verify that a front radiator will not consume the graphics-card length you measured, that a top radiator will clear the motherboard and memory, and that the drive cage will not block the PSU or GPU. NVIDIA notes that PSU-fan orientation depends on the case; position the intake so the supply can draw fresh air through an appropriate vent rather than against a solid panel.

If the motherboard has a separate I/O shield, press it into the rear opening before installing the board. Check all four sides for bent spring tabs that could enter a port.

Install and reconnect the system

  1. Place the case flat. Lower the motherboard into position, guiding the rear ports through the I/O opening and aligning every mounting hole with its matching standoff.
  2. Install the motherboard screws until snug. Do not overtighten; the goal is secure support without stressing the board.
  3. Install the PSU, keeping its cables accessible. Route the 24-pin and CPU power leads toward their motherboard sockets before space becomes restricted.
  4. Install storage drives and reconnect their data and power cables. Confirm that each tray is secured and that no drive is pressing against a panel.
  5. Reconnect motherboard power, CPU power, case fans, pump or radiator fans, front-panel switches and LEDs, front USB, USB-C and audio. Use the motherboard manual and your photographs for the exact header locations.
  6. Reinstall the expansion cards. Seat each card straight into its slot until the retention clip engages, secure the bracket, and connect the required GPU power plugs.
  7. Route cables behind the motherboard tray where the case allows. Avoid sharp bends at connectors, pinching under the board, contact with fan blades and pressure against the GPU side panel.

Do not force a connector that seems not to fit. A missing latch, unusual keying or proprietary plug is a reason to stop and verify the manual or system model, not to trim plastic or rearrange pins.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to remove and remount the CPU cooler

If the cooler stayed attached to the motherboard and its height and mounting position are compatible, there is no reason to disturb it. If you removed it, follow the cooler maker’s mounting sequence and use fresh thermal compound as required. HP lists thermal paste among the supplies for remounting a cooler, and NVIDIA’s build guidance describes cleaning the contact surfaces before applying compound.

Use only the amount and application method specified for that cooler. Tighten the mounting hardware evenly in the stated order. Reconnect the CPU-fan or pump lead to the header required by the motherboard manual before powering on. A cooler that is loose, tilted or missing its fan connection can cause rapid thermal problems.

Inspect the build before closing the panels

  • Every motherboard screw is in a real mounting hole, with no unused standoff touching the board.
  • The 24-pin motherboard and CPU power connectors are fully latched.
  • The GPU is fully seated, its bracket is secured, and every required power plug is connected.
  • RAM and expansion cards are seated evenly.
  • Drive data and power cables are connected to the intended devices.
  • Front-panel, USB, audio, fan, pump and RGB plugs are on the correct headers.
  • No loose screw, tool, tie or packaging material remains inside.
  • Every fan can spin freely, and no cable can reach a blade.
  • GPU power cables are not crushed against the side panel or sharply bent at the connector.
  • Filters, panels and the PSU intake are not blocking the intended airflow path.

Perform the first start with the side panel still off. Connect only the necessary monitor, keyboard and power cable. Confirm that the system reaches BIOS or UEFI, fans operate, and temperatures appear reasonable. Once those checks pass, shut down and fit the panels without trapping cables.

Troubleshoot a failed first start

Symptom Checks to make first Likely corrective action
No power or no fans PSU switch, AC cable, front power-switch header, 24-pin motherboard cable and CPU power cable Reconnect each plug until its latch engages; verify the two power-switch pins with the motherboard manual.
Fans spin but no display GPU seating, GPU power, monitor input and memory seating Power down, reseat the GPU and RAM, and connect the display to the intended graphics output.
System repeatedly restarts CPU power, cooler mounting, memory seating and possible short from an extra standoff Remove AC power, inspect the board underside and standoff pattern, then reseat memory and cooler connections.
Boots but storage is missing SATA data and power plugs, M.2 seating and BIOS storage detection Reconnect the correct drive cables and check the motherboard’s storage page before changing operating-system settings.
High temperature or loud fans Fan direction, fan operation, cooler contact and radiator or filter obstruction Correct the airflow direction, reconnect fan or pump leads, and remount the cooler with fresh compound if it was removed.
Front USB, audio or switches do not work Header location, plug orientation and proprietary OEM wiring Compare each connection with the motherboard and case manuals; do not force an incompatible plug.

BIOS boot order or fan-control settings may need adjustment after the move because the new board layout can change which headers and devices are detected first. Make one change at a time and record the original setting.

Compare smaller cases using the parts you already own

When evaluating several candidates, score each against the same measured requirements instead of choosing by marketing category. A practical comparison looks like this:

Decision axis Question to answer Warning sign
Board support Does the case explicitly support the exact form factor and measured dimensions? “Mid-tower” or “compact” is listed without a mounting diagram or width limit.
GPU room Does the card fit with its actual slot thickness, power plugs and intended front fan or radiator? The maximum length is quoted only with the front drive cage removed.
CPU cooling Is cooler height sufficient, or does the radiator fit the desired position with fans attached? Clearance is stated for a radiator alone, not the complete radiator-and-fan stack.
PSU and cabling Will the PSU length and modular connectors leave room for safe cable bends? The PSU fits only if a drive cage or cable cover is omitted.
Storage Are all current drives supported in locations that do not consume GPU or radiator space? The number of mounts changes when another component is installed.
Headers and I/O Can every front-panel, USB and audio cable reach the correct motherboard header? The case requires a connector your board does not provide.
Airflow and serviceability Are intake and exhaust positions, filters and cable-routing space adequate for your parts? Panels or filters sit directly against all intake openings.
External size Does the assembled case meet your desk or transport limit after accounting for panel and cable clearance? Only the bare chassis dimensions are considered.

A final damage-prevention checklist

  • Exact motherboard model, dimensions and form factor verified.
  • GPU length, thickness and connector clearance verified with the final front layout.
  • Cooler height or radiator-and-fan dimensions verified.
  • PSU format, length, orientation and cable bend space verified.
  • Drive mounts, front-panel connectors and cable-routing room verified.
  • Important data backed up and warranty terms checked for an OEM system.
  • Photos taken before disconnection and unfamiliar cables labeled.
  • Power disconnected and static precautions used on a clean, non-carpeted surface.
  • Only correctly aligned motherboard standoffs installed.
  • Cards released from their retention clips before lifting.
  • Cooler removed only when necessary, with the manufacturer’s remounting instructions followed.
  • All connectors, fans, screws and clearances inspected before the first start.

If any dimension, connector, mounting point or warranty condition remains uncertain, stop before buying or disassembling. The exact system model and candidate case are required to resolve compatibility for a particular prebuilt computer; no generic case-size label can substitute for that check.
