To promote a Bluehost Agency staging site, open Websites → Manage Site → Staging → Promote in the Bluehost Portal, review the replacement warning, then select Go Live. Bluehost describes this as a swap: the staged site becomes production, and the former production site becomes the staging version.
Before you promote the staging site
Promotion replaces the current production site with the staged version. Confirm that you have selected the correct website and staging environment before continuing. Bluehost recommends previewing and testing staged changes first, particularly on larger sites or sites with extensive database clones, where data-integrity issues, performance effects, or differences between staging and production may occur. Test the functions that matter to your site, such as checkout and other e-commerce flows.
- Consider making a separate backup before major changes. Bluehost’s staging-management guidance recommends this; its promotion instructions do not say that clicking Promote creates a backup automatically.
- If you use Jetpack, account for differences in testing: Bluehost says Jetpack is automatically put into offline mode on staging and some features are disabled there.
- Check whether the installation is WordPress Multisite. Bluehost says staging is disabled on Agency Multisite; once Multisite is active, you cannot create a staging site or promote an existing one.
Promote the staging site in the Bluehost Portal
- Review and test the changes in the staging environment.
- Log in to the Bluehost Portal and select Websites.
- Click Manage Site beside the website you intend to update.
- Open the Staging tab on the website details page.
- In the Staging Sites section, click Promote.
- Read the confirmation warning. It states that staging will replace production.
- Click Go Live and wait for the promotion to finish.
- Open the production site and check its appearance and important functions.
Bluehost’s guide does not give a completion-time estimate. It says the process does not interrupt availability while updates are ongoing, but that statement is not an independently measured uptime guarantee.

Bluehost describes promotion as an environment swap, not a file-only deployment: the staging version becomes live, and the former production version becomes the new staging site. Bluehost says you can promote the original version again if you decide to return to it. Treat that as documented swap and re-promotion behavior, not as a guaranteed recovery service or a replacement for a separate backup.

Troubleshoot a failed promotion or a site problem
If the promotion itself fails, or the site behaves unexpectedly afterward, start with the environment and recent changes. Bluehost’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking for conflicting recently added plugins or themes, clearing staging and browser caches, and verifying server configuration, including available storage and correct permissions.
- Check whether a recently added plugin or theme may conflict with the site or promotion.
- Clear the staging cache and your browser cache, then try again or recheck the affected page.
- Verify that the server has sufficient storage and that permissions are correct.
- If promotion still fails, recreate the staging site and try again.
- Contact Bluehost Support if these steps do not resolve the problem.
If promotion completes but a feature does not work as expected, check the live site itself and account for differences between staging and production, including Jetpack’s staging behavior.
