To mount three monitors safely, first verify every screen against the arm’s individual weight limit, size range, VESA pattern, screw requirements and desk-mount limits. Then secure the clamp or grommet base, assemble the post and arms, attach a correctly fitted VESA plate to each monitor, hang and lock each display with a second person supporting it, balance the springs, route cables and test the finished assembly for stability.
There is no universal installation sequence for every triple monitor arm. Crossbar systems, independent gas-spring arms, clamp bases and grommet bases use different hardware. Treat the manual for your exact model as the controlling authority, using the procedure below as a safe framework.
Check compatibility before you remove a monitor stand
Most installation failures start before assembly. A screen can fit the advertised diagonal range yet still exceed the arm’s weight limit, use a different VESA pattern or require screws that the mount cannot safely accommodate. Check each monitor without its original stand and write down the values before choosing where it will go.
Record these specifications for all three screens
- Weight without the factory stand: use the monitor’s technical specification or weigh the display after removing its stand. Compare the figure with the mount’s per-screen limit, not merely a combined total.
- Screen size: verify the supported diagonal range. Size affects clearance and leverage even when weight is within limits.
- VESA hole spacing: common patterns include 75 × 75 mm and 100 × 100 mm, but the mount must explicitly support the pattern on your displays.
- Thread type and screw depth: identify whether the monitor uses M4, M5 or another thread and check how far a screw may enter the back of the display.
- Back-panel shape: a recessed or curved rear cover may need supplied spacers or longer screws. Do not force a plate flat against an uneven housing.
Examples of why model-specific limits matter
The HDWR SolidHand-CM03U manual specifies three 17–27-inch monitors weighing up to 6 kg each, with 75 × 75 mm or 100 × 100 mm VESA patterns. The separate HDWR SolidHand-SG03 is specified for 13–27-inch displays weighing 2–8 kg each and uses the same two VESA patterns. These figures belong to those named models; they are not a standard for all triple monitor arms.

If any monitor is outside the selected model’s range, stop and choose a different mount or a different display arrangement. Do not compensate for an overweight screen by tightening the spring or clamp harder.
Inspect the parts, desk and mounting location
Unpack the arm on a clear floor or table and compare every bracket, screw, washer, spacer and tool with the parts diagram. Do not install hardware that is bent, cracked, stripped or missing. A damaged arm should be replaced rather than improvised with unapproved fasteners.
Check the desk structure
- Confirm that the desktop is strong enough to carry the mount and three monitors without excessive flexing.
- Measure the desk thickness at the exact mounting location. A beveled edge, cable tray or rear lip can reduce the usable clamp depth.
- Ensure the mount will not sit on a fragile trim strip, hollow edge or unsupported overhang.
- Leave room behind the desk for the clamp, tightening handle and monitor movement.
- If using a grommet installation, verify that a suitable hole exists or that making one is permitted and safe for the desk. The hole must align with the mount’s hardware and leave enough material around it.
Understand the attachment choices
A clamp grips the rear or edge of the desktop. A grommet mount passes through a hole and uses hardware, often including a plate underneath the desk. Use only the configuration shown in the arm’s manual. For example, the CM03U clamp accommodates 10–58 mm desktops in one bracket position and 50–85 mm in another; those ranges are not interchangeable and do not apply to other models.

Clamp installation
- Position the clamp at a structurally supported part of the desk, with the base plate oriented exactly as shown in the manual.
- Select the bracket position that covers your measured desktop thickness. Do not make the bracket reach by leaving a large gap.
- Hand-tighten the clamp first so the base remains aligned with the desk edge.
- Check from above and below that the contact surfaces are flat and fully engaged.
- Tighten the handle or bolt gradually, alternating checks for alignment. Stop when the base is immobile; excessive force can damage the desk or hardware.
Grommet installation
- Place the base over the approved desk hole and pass the threaded hardware through it.
- Fit the washer or support plate underneath in the orientation specified by the manual.
- Thread the retaining nut or bolt by hand while keeping the upper base centered.
- Tighten until the base cannot rotate or lift. Have a second person hold the top section if the assembly tends to turn.
After tightening, push the empty base gently in several directions. If it shifts, rocks or pulls the desk surface upward, correct the attachment before adding the post.
Assemble the post, arms and crossbar
Follow the manual’s order for the upright post, collars, center head, side rails and spring arms. The order matters because some collars must be installed before an arm is placed on the post, and some springs are under tension when unfolded.
For a shared crossbar design
A crossbar system uses one arm or head to carry a horizontal rail for all three screens. Attach the post and central arm, secure the crossbar’s center connection, then install the side rails or end sections. Set the rail spacing before hanging displays if the manual calls for it. Tighten the locking screws that prevent the rail from sliding or rotating.

For independent arms
An independent-arm system places separate spring arms or heads on the post. Install each collar at the height and order specified, then tighten its locking hardware. Keep the arms folded or supported while working so a spring cannot swing into the desk or your hands.
Do not release a spring-loaded arm suddenly. If the manual warns that an arm must be held while unfolding, use both hands or have a helper control it.
Attach one VESA plate to each monitor
Remove each factory stand and place the monitor face down on a clean, soft, stable surface. A folded blanket or the original protective packaging can prevent scratches, but keep buttons and ports from bearing the monitor’s weight.
- Align the VESA plate with the four threaded holes on the monitor.
- Check the thread size and choose screws that engage securely without reaching the internal electronics.
- Use washers or spacers only where the mount or monitor instructions specify them. A recessed or curved back may require a spacer to keep the plate from flexing.
- Start all screws by hand so the threads are not crossed.
- Tighten the screws evenly in a diagonal pattern. Stop when the plate is firmly seated; do not overtighten.
- Lift the monitor by its housing and plate to confirm that the plate does not rock. Never test by swinging the display.
The CM03U kit includes M4 and M5 monitor screws and washers. The SG03 instructions describe longer screws and spacers for some curved or recessed backs. Those examples show why the supplied screw length must be checked against the actual monitor rather than selected by appearance.
Hang, lock and repeat for all three monitors
Mounting is safest with two people. One person supports the monitor from underneath and controls its cable side; the other guides the VESA plate onto the arm head or crossbar.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Bring the first display to the attachment point while keeping its weight supported.
- Hook, slide or seat the VESA plate using the exact motion shown in the manual.
- Engage the retaining screw, thumb screw, latch or other locking device before releasing the display.
- Gently test upward and outward movement with both hands. If the plate lifts or rocks, remove the monitor and correct the connection.
- Repeat the process for the second and third screens.
Never let go of a monitor while the plate is merely resting on a hook. A retaining screw or latch is what prevents a display from falling when the arm moves.

Set spacing on a crossbar
Once all three displays are locked, slide them to the intended left, center and right positions if the crossbar permits lateral adjustment. Keep the center of gravity over the desk and leave enough clearance for bezels, ports and ventilation. Tighten the crossbar’s position locks after spacing is set.
Balance gas-spring tension after the monitors are mounted
Spring tension should be adjusted with the monitors attached, because the displays provide the load the spring is designed to balance. Support the arm while turning the adjustment and use the specified tool; do not force a screw that does not turn normally.
CM03U adjustment example
The CM03U instructions direct you to hold the arm horizontal. If the crossbar drops, turn the tension adjustment toward the plus direction. If it rises, turn toward the minus direction. Make small changes, allow the arm to settle, and repeat until it stays level. The manual also includes a small crossbar-leveling adjustment for correcting tilt across the three screens.

These plus and minus directions are specific to the CM03U. Other arms can use a different direction, scale or locking method, so follow the markings on your model instead of copying this adjustment blindly.
Balance independent arms separately
With an independent-arm mount, adjust one screen at a time while supporting the arm. A heavy monitor may require a different setting from a lighter monitor. After each adjustment, move the arm through its permitted range and confirm that it neither sinks nor springs upward.
Position the displays and route cables
Set the center screen at your primary viewing position, then angle the side screens toward you if the mount allows independent tilt. Keep every display within the movement range stated by the manufacturer. Do not use the monitor housing as a lever to force an arm beyond its stops.

Protect cable connections
- Connect video, power and USB cables only after the displays are secure.
- Leave enough slack for the full height, tilt and swivel range. A taut cable can pull a monitor out of alignment or damage a port.
- Route cables through the arm’s clips, covers or hooks where provided. The CM03U includes cable covers and a hook for cable routing.
- Keep cables away from spring joints and clamp threads where they could be pinched.
- Move each screen slowly from its most extended position to its closest position and watch for snagging.
For a crossbar system, cable slack must accommodate the combined movement of the rail. For independent arms, check each cable path separately.

Before using the workstation, inspect the complete installation with the monitors in their normal positions and again after moving them.
- Verify that the clamp or grommet hardware remains tight and the desk has not begun to flex, crush or split.
- Confirm that every VESA plate is fully seated and its retaining hardware is engaged.
- Check that no monitor exceeds the arm’s individual weight or size limit.
- Make sure the post, collars, crossbar and arm joints do not rotate when they should be fixed.
- Move each display slowly through its permitted range and listen for unusual clicking, scraping or cracking.
- Confirm that video and power cables have slack and do not pull on connectors.
- Check that the desk remains stable when all three screens are extended. The CM03U manual specifically warns never to swing the monitors beyond the rear edge of the desk because the load can tip the desk.
If the desk rocks, stop using the mount and reposition or reinforce the attachment. Do not solve a tipping problem by adding random weights or tightening a fastener beyond the manual’s instructions.
Choose the right triple-monitor arm design
Installation effort and everyday flexibility depend on the mechanism. Compare the design characteristics before purchasing a replacement arm or changing your layout.
| Design question | Shared crossbar | Independent arms |
|---|---|---|
| How the screens move | All three displays can rise or fall together when the shared arm moves. | Each display can be positioned and adjusted separately. |
| Example in the supplied manuals | HDWR SolidHand-CM03U | HDWR SolidHand-SG03 |
| What to verify | Crossbar spacing, rail locks, combined clearance and leveling. | Each arm’s spring setting, joint clearance and cable slack. |
| Best fit | A uniform three-screen layout where synchronized movement is useful. | Mixed heights, different viewing angles or screens that need independent positioning. |
Neither design is automatically safer. The correct choice is the one whose per-screen limits, VESA hardware, desk attachment and movement range match your monitors and desk.
Troubleshoot common installation problems
The monitor will not sit flush against the plate
Check for a recessed or curved back, an incorrect spacer arrangement or a screw head interfering with the housing. Remove the plate, compare the screw length with the manual and reinstall with the specified spacers. Never force the plate flat.

The arm drops after adjustment
Confirm that the monitor weight is within the arm’s per-screen rating and that the tension direction matches the model’s instructions. On the CM03U, a dropping crossbar calls for adjustment toward plus. If the arm still drops at the end of its adjustment range, the load may be unsuitable or the mechanism may be damaged.
The arm rises when you release it
Reduce spring tension according to the manual. For the CM03U, a rising crossbar calls for adjustment toward minus. Support the arm during adjustment so it cannot jump upward.
The clamp does not reach the desktop
Re-measure the desktop at the mounting point and verify that the bracket is in the correct position. The CM03U has separate 10–58 mm and 50–85 mm clamp ranges for different bracket positions. If your desk is outside the specified range, use a compatible mounting method or a different arm.
A display shifts after it is locked
Remove the monitor with help, inspect the VESA plate and locking hardware, and reinstall it. A plate that is only hooked but not retained can slide or lift. Also check that the monitor screws are evenly tightened and that the crossbar or arm collar is locked.
The desk moves or begins to tip
Stop moving the screens. Return them inside the desk footprint, inspect the clamp or grommet contact area and verify the desktop’s structural condition. A triple-monitor arm creates leverage when displays are extended; if the desk cannot remain stable, the installation is not safe.
What to check when buying or replacing an arm
- Per-monitor weight limit, including the lightest and heaviest screens you plan to use.
- Supported screen-size range and the physical width of your three displays.
- VESA patterns and the supplied screw sizes, washers and spacers.
- Clamp thickness range and whether the bracket can clear your desk edge.
- Whether a grommet hole is required, supplied or optional.
- Shared crossbar or independent arms, depending on whether you need synchronized or separate movement.
- Spring-adjustment method and whether the arm can be balanced for each display.
- Cable covers, clips or hooks that match your desk layout.
- Safety warnings about desk edges, maximum extension and monitor locking.
Product pages can establish that a mount exists and indicate its broad configuration, but installation details belong to the exact manual. Read the manual before drilling a grommet hole, selecting screws or attaching a monitor.
