The reliable way to waterproof an outdoor access point (AP) is to follow that model’s installation guide: use the permitted mounting location and orientation, the specified outdoor Ethernet cable, and the supplied cable gland with the seal that matches the cable diameter. “Outdoor” is not a universal permission to mount a unit in direct rain. Some APs require an eave or other shelter, while others are designed for exposed installation. Identify the exact model before drilling, cutting cable, or tightening a gland.

Start with the exact AP model and its exposure limits

Record the complete model number, hardware revision if the guide distinguishes one, and the PoE injector or switch that will power it. Download the manufacturer’s installation guide, not just a product listing or a generic mounting video. The guide determines whether the AP may face direct weather, must sit under an eave, needs a particular angle, includes a gland, and accepts a particular cable diameter.

Direct exposure and sheltered installation are different

For example, the UAP-AC-PRO Quick Start Guide says the unit should be installed under an eave or another protected location rather than in an open environment. It also specifies at least 60 cm (2 ft) from the edge of the eave or ceiling. That setback belongs to the UAP-AC-PRO; it is not a rule for every outdoor AP.

Other products are engineered for more exposed sites, but their cable entry, bracket and grounding requirements still apply. An AP can have an outdoor enclosure and still require a sheltered connector or a particular downward-facing cable route.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Confirm the permitted mounting position

Look for diagrams showing wall, pole, ceiling or under-eave installation. Note any “up,” “down,” drainage or cable-feed arrows. On the UAP-AC-PRO, the cable-feed opening must face away from the open environment and point downward for a wall mount. Reversing that part can direct water toward the entry even when the housing is otherwise intact.

Do not drill first and decide the orientation later. Mark the bracket with the final cable path in mind, including enough slack to form the model-approved route without sharply bending the cable or pulling on the gland.

Prepare the site, parts and tools

Before climbing or opening the AP, assemble the exact parts listed by the guide. Keep every washer, compression ring, grommet, seal nut, cap and bracket with that AP. A gland that looks similar can have a different thread, compression range or seal profile.

  • The AP’s approved mount and all supplied hardware.
  • The manufacturer-supplied cable gland and the seal or grommet sized for your cable.
  • Outdoor-rated Ethernet cable meeting the AP’s category, shielding, conductor and outside-diameter requirements.
  • A wrench or spanner only when the manual calls for one; some glands are hand-tightened or use a specified torque.

  • Basic installation tools appropriate to the wall or pole, plus a way to support the AP while you terminate the cable.

Choose a location with a stable mounting surface, a serviceable cable route and no place for water to pool around the entry. Keep the radio’s intended coverage direction clear of nearby metal, walls and foliage. Do not add a bead of household caulk as a substitute for a designed gasket or cable gland; the cited installation manuals do not establish caulk as an approved sealing method.

Choose outdoor Ethernet cable by the AP’s complete specification

Category alone is not enough. The cable must be rated for the site’s ultraviolet and weather exposure and must physically fit the gland and connector. Verify all of these items in the AP guide:

  • Outdoor and UV resistance.
  • Minimum category, such as Cat 5e, Cat 6 or Cat 6A.
  • Shielding requirement and how the shield is bonded to the equipment.
  • Solid or stranded conductor and the connector style the AP accepts.
  • Finished outside diameter, including the jacket, for the gland’s compression range.

The Aruba 387 Series Outdoor Access Points Installation Guide calls for UV-resistant, outdoor-rated Cat 5e or better cable. The Cisco Catalyst 9124AX Series Outdoor Access Point Hardware Installation Guide specifies shielded outdoor-rated Cat 6 or Cat 6A within the diameter ranges listed in that guide. Those requirements are model examples, not interchangeable standards.

Measure or obtain the cable manufacturer’s stated outside diameter before selecting a seal. A cable that is electrically suitable but too thin may not compress; one that is too thick may prevent the gland from closing or damage the seal.

How to mount an outdoor access point

  1. Verify the final location against the guide. Check exposure, eave clearance, wall or pole compatibility, service access and the planned cable direction. For a UAP-AC-PRO installation, keep the unit in the protected location and at least 60 cm (2 ft) from the eave or ceiling edge specified by its guide.
  2. Orient the bracket and cable opening. Follow the model’s arrows and diagrams. Where the guide requires it, point the cable entry down and away from open weather. Do not assume that rotating a bracket 180 degrees is harmless.
  3. Mark and secure the mount. Use the supplied fasteners or the fastener type required for the mounting surface. Tighten the bracket evenly so it cannot shift, but do not deform a plastic housing or bracket.
  4. Route the cable with a service loop. Leave enough slack to remove the AP or open its connection area without pulling the gland. Keep the route supported and protect it from abrasion, standing water, sharp edges and sources of heat.
  5. Prepare the cable only as far as the manual allows. Preserve the jacket up to the gland. Strip or terminate the conductors using the connector and pinout specified by the AP guide; excessive jacket removal defeats the compression seal.
  6. Install the AP on the mount. Engage every latch, screw or locking feature. Confirm that the housing sits squarely and that the cable is not twisting the connector or forcing the entry sideways.

How to seal an Ethernet cable entry

Keep the gland parts together

A weatherproof gland is a matched system: body, compression seal, nut and sometimes a grommet or insert. Lay the pieces out in the order shown in the manual before pushing the cable through. Do not discard an unused insert or substitute tape, foam or a generic rubber washer.

The Aruba 387 package, for example, includes grommets for 4–6 mm and 6–10 mm cables. Those ranges apply to that package and should not be treated as a universal gland standard. Cisco documents two cable-seal ranges for the Catalyst 9124AX gland; use the range printed in its guide for the cable you actually install.

Fit the seal to the cable diameter

  1. Check the cable jacket for cuts, flattening or contamination. Replace damaged cable rather than trying to make the gland compensate for it.
  2. Slide the correct nut and seal components onto the cable in the order shown by the guide. If the gland uses a split or removable grommet, seat the cable in its channel without pinching the jacket.
  3. Push the cable through the gland body until the jacket reaches the prescribed stop. Keep the seal centered and evenly wrapped around the jacket.
  4. Engage the connector with the AP’s Ethernet port without forcing it. Ensure the latch is fully engaged and the cable is not applying sideways load.
  5. Close the gland according to the model’s procedure. The Aruba AP-375EX/AP-377EX guide instructs the installer to tighten the seal nut by hand until the seal contacts the cable, then tighten it one further turn with a spanner.

That one-turn instruction belongs to the Aruba AP-375EX/AP-377EX procedure. Another AP may specify a different tool, torque or stopping point. Do not overtighten a gland based on a different model’s directions: crushing the seal can create a leak path or damage the cable jacket.

Check unused openings

Reinstall every supplied port cap, blanking plug or cover that the guide requires. A sealed cable entry does not protect an open auxiliary port. Make sure the housing cover and its gasket are seated evenly and that no cable, washer or debris is trapped in the joint.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Complete grounding and PoE instructions

Grounding is part of the outdoor installation, not an optional sealing accessory. Follow both the AP manual and the PoE injector or switch instructions, along with applicable electrical requirements at your site.

For the UAP-AC-PRO, Ubiquiti specifies shielded Cat 5 or above for outdoor wired Ethernet and grounding through the PoE AC ground. Other APs can require different cable construction, bonding points or protective hardware. Do not assume that a shielded patch lead, a building ground or a metal pole automatically satisfies the manufacturer’s instructions.

  1. Identify the AP grounding point and the PoE equipment grounding path in their respective manuals.
  2. Use the specified shielded or unshielded cable and connectors; do not mix parts that leave the shield floating when the design requires bonding.
  3. Make the ground connection before commissioning, with power removed where the instructions require it.
  4. Inspect for loose lugs, corrosion, damaged conductors and contact with painted or insulating surfaces where a bond is required.
  5. Restore power only after the cable gland, caps, housing and grounding connections are complete.

Inspect the seal before powering the AP

Perform a deliberate visual and mechanical check while the installation is still accessible:

  • The cable jacket is continuous through the compression area, with no cuts, flattened section or exposed braid where the seal should contact it.
  • The selected grommet or seal matches the measured cable diameter and sits evenly around the jacket.
  • The gland nut is tightened exactly as the model manual specifies, without visible distortion.
  • The cable-feed opening faces the required direction and the cable forms no upward water trap at the entry.
  • All unused ports, covers and drain or blanking components are installed as directed.
  • The mount is rigid, the AP is fully latched, and the cable has strain relief rather than pulling on the connector.
  • Grounding and PoE connections are complete and protected from accidental contact.

The cited manuals support these model-specific connection and gland procedures, but they do not establish a universal field leak-test protocol. Do not spray or pressure-test an AP unless its manufacturer provides a method. Instead, commission it as directed, confirm link and power status, and monitor the installation after the first periods of rain or condensation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Commission and verify operation

  1. Connect the approved PoE source and wait for the AP’s startup indication described in its documentation.
  2. Adopt or configure the AP from the vendor’s normal management interface.
  3. Verify Ethernet link, negotiated speed, PoE status and wireless service from a nearby test position.
  4. Check that the AP remains stable while the cable is gently supported; never twist the gland to test it.
  5. Record the model, cable type and diameter, seal size, mount location and installation date for future maintenance.

If the AP powers but has no network link, troubleshoot the connector, pinout, cable and PoE source before disturbing the gland. If the link is stable but the AP repeatedly reboots in wet weather, remove power safely and inspect for water tracks, a displaced seal, an open cap or a cable that does not fit the gland range.

Troubleshoot common sealing and mounting failures

Water appears at the cable entry

  • Stop using the AP if moisture has reached electrical parts, and follow the manufacturer’s safety and service instructions.
  • Check whether the cable entry is facing upward or toward the exposed side contrary to the guide.
  • Confirm that the seal range matches the cable’s actual outside diameter, not just its printed category.
  • Look for a nicked jacket, a twisted grommet, cross-threaded nut or debris in the gland.
  • Replace damaged or incompatible gland parts with model-compatible parts; do not fill the joint with caulk as a substitute.

The gland will not tighten or the cable pulls out

These symptoms commonly indicate the wrong insert, an out-of-range cable, missing gland components or damaged threads. Disassemble only as far as the manual permits, compare every part with the diagram, and install the correct seal. If the cable diameter is outside the documented range, replace the cable or use the manufacturer-approved gland assembly rather than forcing the nut.

The mount shifts or the AP points incorrectly

Remove load from the cable, verify that the bracket is the correct model, and retighten or replace fasteners for the mounting surface. Reorient the AP to the documented position before restoring service. A bracket that is mechanically secure but leaves the entry exposed still fails the weather-protection requirement.

Maintenance after installation

Inspect exposed installations at a sensible interval for the site’s weather, dust and vibration. Look for cracked seals, UV-damaged jackets, corrosion, loose hardware, blocked drains, insect debris and changes in the cable’s support. Pay particular attention after storms, construction or any work that moved the cable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When replacing a cable, select the seal again from the new cable’s measured diameter. Do not reuse a deformed grommet or assume that a replacement cable with the same category has the same jacket size. Keep the original installation guide with the maintenance record so a future technician can reproduce the model’s orientation and tightening procedure.

Compare AP and sealing requirements before you buy

Decision point What to verify Why it matters
Exposure rating Direct exposure, under-eave use or another restricted location An outdoor label does not by itself permit open-air mounting.
Mount orientation Required wall, pole or ceiling position and cable-feed direction Orientation controls how rain reaches the entry and housing joints.
Mount and gland hardware Included parts versus separately ordered, model-compatible parts Thread, seal shape and compression design are not universal.
Cable construction Outdoor/UV rating, category, shielding, conductor and connector requirements Electrical suitability and environmental suitability are separate checks.
Cable diameter The documented seal range for the finished cable jacket A mismatch can leave a gap or prevent the gland from closing.
Grounding and PoE AP bonding point, cable shield treatment and PoE equipment instructions Grounding and power protection must be completed with sealing.
Environmental conditions UV, rain, dust, condensation, salt, vibration and service access at the site The mounting plan must suit the actual location, not just a laboratory description.

Manufacturer guides to keep with the installation record

Bottom line

Mounting and sealing an outdoor AP is a model-specific installation, not a matter of adding caulk around a cable. Confirm the allowed exposure and orientation, use the specified outdoor cable, match the gland seal to the cable diameter, tighten it exactly as directed, complete grounding and PoE requirements, and inspect the finished entry before commissioning. Those checks address the actual water and dust paths while preserving the AP manufacturer’s design.
