Use Zabbix to detect problems on your Linux VPS and Alerta to collect, deduplicate, and display the resulting events. The reliable design is Zabbix → a webhook or the zabbix-alerta gateway → the Alerta API → the Alerta web console. Zabbix remains responsible for agents, items, trigger expressions, severity, and recovery; Alerta becomes the incident-facing aggregation layer.
This guide shows a reproducible Docker deployment, a native-Python alternative, both forwarding methods, API hardening, least-privilege Zabbix configuration, an end-to-end test, and the failure modes that most often make an integration appear to be working when alerts are actually being dropped or exposed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow the Zabbix–Alerta architecture works
A Zabbix server (or a Zabbix server monitoring the VPS) evaluates data from the Linux host. A Linux template supplies items and triggers for conditions such as agent availability, CPU use, load, memory pressure, filesystem capacity, and swap. When a trigger changes state, Zabbix sends an event to Alerta through one of two forwarding paths:
- Zabbix webhook media type: Zabbix posts a formatted request directly to the Alerta API. The webhook can pass alert subject, message, event ID, trigger details, severity, and a link back to the Zabbix event.
zabbix-alertagateway: A separate integration process translates Zabbix notifications and forwards them to Alerta. Its profile can hold the Alerta endpoint, API key, TLS-verification setting, and debug mode.
Alerta stores incoming alerts, groups duplicate events, updates an alert when a recovery arrives, and presents the resulting state in its console. It does not replace Zabbix trigger logic. If a trigger is disabled, a template is missing, or the Zabbix action does not run, Alerta has no event to display.

Prerequisites and planning checklist
- A Linux VPS with administrative access, a supported Docker Engine and Docker Compose installation for the container route, or Python and the Alerta server dependencies for a native installation.
- A reachable Zabbix server and a monitored Linux host. Attach an appropriate Linux template and confirm that the agent is reporting before you troubleshoot Alerta.
- A DNS name or private address for Alerta, depending on whether the console is internal or internet-facing.
- A database supported by the Alerta deployment. The project-maintained container documentation describes MongoDB and PostgreSQL routes.
- A plan for HTTPS termination, firewall rules, database persistence, backups, and secret storage.
- A dedicated Zabbix integration user and a scoped Alerta API key. Do not reuse a personal administrator credential.
Decide whether Zabbix and Alerta will run on the same VPS. Co-location reduces network configuration but couples resource pressure: a full disk, exhausted memory, or a failed Docker daemon can affect both monitoring and alert presentation. A separate monitoring VPS gives better fault isolation. In either design, keep Zabbix’s own event history and recovery data; Alerta is an additional operational view, not your only record.
Webhook or gateway: which forwarding method fits?
Both methods can deliver an event ID, trigger information, severity, and a Zabbix link. Select one path initially rather than sending every event through both, which creates duplicate notifications and makes deduplication harder to reason about.
| Decision point | Zabbix webhook media type | zabbix-alerta gateway |
|---|---|---|
| Maintenance burden | One integration configured and upgraded inside Zabbix. | An additional process, profile, service account, and upgrade path. |
| Payload mapping | You map Zabbix macros to the request fields accepted by Alerta. | The gateway performs the translation and keeps mapping logic outside the action. |
| API-key handling | Store the key in the media type or its protected parameters and restrict who can edit it. | Store the key in the gateway profile and protect that file and service. |
| TLS verification | Use the webhook’s HTTPS client and certificate-validation settings. | Set the profile’s endpoint and TLS-verification value explicitly; never disable verification merely to bypass a certificate error. |
| Resolve and update support | Configure problem and recovery operations so Alerta receives the matching update. | Use the gateway’s documented mapping for problem, update, and resolve states. |
| Link back to Zabbix | Build the event URL directly from supported Zabbix macros. | Pass the event information the gateway expects so it can populate Alerta’s moreInfo link. |
| Best fit | A small installation that wants fewer moving parts. | An environment that already standardizes notification translation in a separate service. |
Deploy Alerta with Docker on the VPS
1. Prepare persistent storage and secrets
Create a directory owned by a deployment account rather than placing credentials in a shell command or a public repository. Keep the database volume on persistent storage; otherwise a container replacement can remove alert history.
sudo mkdir -p /opt/alerta
sudo chown "$USER":"$USER" /opt/alerta
cd /opt/alerta
umask 077
Create an environment file readable only by the deployment account. The container documentation exposes settings including DATABASE_URL, ADMIN_PASSWORD, ADMIN_KEY, SECRET_KEY, AUTH_REQUIRED, and plugin configuration. Generate long, random values for the administrative and signing secrets; never keep the example credentials from a sample compose file.

2. Create a Compose project
Run the project-maintained Alerta web image with a database service. The exact image tag and database image should match the release documentation you are using; pin tested tags or digests instead of silently following an unreviewed latest image. The following layout illustrates the required relationships and persistence. Adjust the image tags, database name, credentials, and container port to the versions supported by your release.
services:
db:
image: mongo
restart: unless-stopped
volumes:
- alerta-db:/data/db
alerta:
image: alerta/alerta-web
restart: unless-stopped
depends_on:
- db
environment:
DATABASE_URL: mongodb://db:27017/alerta
ADMIN_PASSWORD: ${ALERTA_ADMIN_PASSWORD}
ADMIN_KEY: ${ALERTA_ADMIN_KEY}
SECRET_KEY: ${ALERTA_SECRET_KEY}
AUTH_REQUIRED: "true"
ports:
- "8080:8080"
volumes:
alerta-db:
The image name, database connection syntax, and internal listening port can change between releases, so confirm them against the container documentation before starting. If you select PostgreSQL instead, replace the database service and DATABASE_URL with the PostgreSQL connection form supported by that release. Do not expose the database port to the public network; only the Alerta API/UI needs to be reachable by the reverse proxy and the Zabbix sender.
3. Start and inspect the services
docker compose pull
docker compose config
docker compose up -d
docker compose ps
docker compose logs --tail=100 alerta
docker compose config catches malformed interpolation before deployment. Wait for the database to become ready, then confirm that the web container remains running and that its logs show a successful database connection. A restart loop usually means an invalid connection string, an unsupported setting, a permissions problem on a mounted volume, or a database that has not finished starting.

4. Put HTTPS in front of the console and API
Bind the application to a private interface or the Docker network and terminate TLS at your reverse proxy. Permit inbound traffic only from the Zabbix server and approved administrators. Configure the proxy’s allowed origins and forwarding headers according to the Alerta deployment guidance. The public hostname must present a certificate whose name matches the hostname used by Zabbix; otherwise a correctly configured client will reject the connection.
Do not treat a firewall as a substitute for authentication. A VPS address can be scanned, and an accidentally published API port allows direct access that bypasses the proxy’s intended policy.

Alerta’s authentication documentation warns: By default, Alerta runs without authentication – any client can read and write alerts.
Enable authentication before opening the service to a network you do not fully control.
- Set
AUTH_REQUIREDto true in the container or the equivalent server configuration. - Use a unique, randomly generated
SECRET_KEY; do not reuse a database password or a value from a sample file. - Create a dedicated API key for the Zabbix integration and scope it to the operations it needs. Keep an administrator key separate from the sender key.
- Send the key in an
Authorization: Key …header or anX-API-Keyheader, as supported by your Alerta client and version. - Use HTTPS for both the browser console and API traffic. Keep certificate verification enabled in Zabbix or the gateway.
- Restrict origins, proxy access, and firewall sources. Permit the Zabbix server to submit events without granting it unrestricted administrative access.
- Rotate API keys, admin credentials, and signing secrets on a schedule and immediately after suspected disclosure. Revoke the old key only after the new sender has been tested.
- Keep database credentials, API keys, and admin passwords out of shell history, Git, CI logs, and support screenshots.
After changing authentication or a secret, restart the relevant service and test an authenticated request. A browser login succeeding does not prove that the Zabbix sender has the required API permission.

Prepare Zabbix to generate useful Linux events
1. Verify the monitored host and triggers
In Zabbix, open the Linux host and confirm that the agent is available, recent item values are arriving, and the selected Linux template is linked. Check that the triggers you care about are enabled. At minimum, review agent availability, CPU, load, memory, filesystem, and swap conditions. If no trigger changes state, no webhook or gateway configuration can produce an Alerta alert.
2. Create a dedicated integration user
Create a Zabbix user used only by the Alerta action. Attach the webhook media to that user and grant the minimum host and operation permissions required by your Zabbix version. Reference this user from the alert action rather than attaching a personal administrator’s media. Restrict the user to the host groups it must read, and remove interactive permissions that are not needed for delivery.
Configure a Zabbix webhook to Alerta
- Open the Zabbix administration area and create or import a webhook media type.
- Set the Alerta API endpoint used by your reverse proxy. Use the HTTPS hostname and path expected by the Alerta API, not the database address or an internal Docker service name that Zabbix cannot resolve.
- Add the API key as a protected parameter or secret variable. Map the key to the request header required by Alerta; do not place it in a subject or message macro.
- Map supported Zabbix macros for the alert subject, message, event ID, trigger name, host, severity, and recovery state. Include a stable event identifier so repeated updates address the same Alerta alert.
- Construct a
moreInfoURL that returns an operator to the Zabbix event. Use the URL format and macros supported by your Zabbix edition; verify that the resulting link is reachable by the people who use the Alerta console. - Configure both problem and recovery operations. A problem-only action leaves stale alerts in Alerta when Zabbix later resolves the trigger.
- Attach the media type to the dedicated integration user and set an appropriate severity or host-group filter on the action. Start with a narrow scope while validating payloads.
- Save the media type and action, then inspect Zabbix’s action log after the first event. An HTTP success response confirms delivery to the endpoint, not that every field was mapped as intended.
Macro names and webhook parameter screens differ between Zabbix releases. Use the macros shown as supported in your installed version; an unexpanded macro can produce a blank host, event ID, or link and may prevent Alerta from deduplicating correctly.
Configure the zabbix-alerta gateway
Choose the gateway when you want a separate translator or already operate notification integrations as services. Install the gateway according to its release instructions, run it under a dedicated service account, and keep its profile outside version control.

Profile settings to define
- Alerta endpoint: the HTTPS API address reachable from the gateway host.
- API key: the scoped key created for this integration.
- TLS verification: enabled in production, with the correct CA chain installed if you use an internal certificate authority.
- Debug: disabled during normal operation. Enable it temporarily when diagnosing a mapping or transport failure, then turn it off because payloads can contain host names and operational data.
For profile-based configuration, set ALERTA_CONF_FILE to the profile path and define those endpoint, key, TLS, and debug values there. Lock the file permissions and ensure the service account can read it without making it world-readable. Configure Zabbix to call the gateway using the event and recovery fields it expects, and pass a stable event identifier and a Zabbix link.

- Choose a test host and a trigger you can safely change. Avoid deliberately filling a production filesystem or stopping a critical service.
- Temporarily create a harmless test trigger, or use a documented maintenance-test mechanism in your Zabbix version. Record the expected severity, host, event ID, and recovery behavior.
- Cause the trigger to enter the problem state and wait for Zabbix to generate the action. Check the Zabbix action log for the webhook or gateway result.
- In Alerta, confirm one alert appears with the expected resource, severity, environment, event identifier, and message.
- Open the alert’s
moreInfolink and confirm it lands on the corresponding Zabbix event rather than a generic dashboard or an inaccessible internal address. - Send the same event again and confirm that Alerta updates or deduplicates it instead of creating an unrelated copy.
- Return the test condition to normal. Confirm that Zabbix sends a recovery and that Alerta changes the alert to its resolved state.
- Remove the temporary trigger or disable the test action, and retain the timestamps and event IDs in your change record.
The available configuration documentation describes the integration but does not establish an independent performance or delivery-rate benchmark. Treat your controlled test as a functional check, not as proof that every future event will arrive under outage load.
Troubleshoot the most common failures
No event appears in Alerta
- Confirm the Zabbix trigger actually changed state and that the action condition includes its severity, host group, and maintenance status.
- Check that the integration user has a media of the expected type and a valid destination.
- Read the Zabbix action log, then inspect gateway logs or
docker compose logs alerta. A DNS, route, firewall, or TLS error must be fixed before payload mapping matters. - From the sender host, test name resolution and an HTTPS connection to the Alerta hostname without disabling certificate verification.
Alerta returns an authentication or authorization error
- Verify that the key is active, scoped for event creation and updates, and sent in the correct header format.
- Check that the request is reaching the authenticated proxy path rather than an unprotected or incorrect URL.
- After rotating a key, update every webhook or gateway profile and restart services that cache configuration.
Alerts arrive but are duplicated
- Ensure only one forwarding path is enabled for the same Zabbix action.
- Pass a stable Zabbix event identifier on problem, update, and recovery requests.
- Check that the gateway and webhook are not transforming the same event into different resource or event values.
- Compare timestamps and payloads in debug logs, then disable debug logging after diagnosis.
Severity, links, or recovery state is wrong
- Inspect the rendered macro values in the Zabbix action output rather than the template text.
- Map Zabbix severity values to the Alerta severity vocabulary expected by your integration version.
- Configure a distinct recovery operation and send the same event identifier used for the problem.
- Test the generated
moreInfoURL from an operator’s browser; a link that works only from the Zabbix server is not operationally useful.
The Docker service will not start or loses data
- Run
docker compose configand inspect environment-variable expansion. - Check database readiness, connection-string syntax, container-network names, and mounted-volume permissions.
- Verify that the database uses a named volume or a backed-up host directory. Recreating a container must not recreate an empty database.
- Pin compatible image versions and test upgrades on a copy of the database before changing production containers.
Operate the integration safely after launch
- Back up the database: Alerta’s alert history and configuration are operational data. Test restoration, not just backup creation.
- Monitor the monitor: alert on a stopped Alerta container, database health, disk consumption, certificate expiry, and failed Zabbix actions.
- Control retention: define how long Alerta data should remain and watch database growth on a busy Zabbix instance.
- Patch deliberately: review Alerta, database, Docker, reverse-proxy, and host updates together. Keep a known-good image tag for rollback.
- Review permissions: periodically remove unused Zabbix media, Alerta keys, and administrator accounts.
- Document ownership: record the endpoint, forwarding method, key owner, recovery behavior, backup location, and the exact test procedure.
- Protect logs: gateway debug output and proxy logs may contain alert messages, host names, and URLs. Apply suitable permissions and retention.
Docker versus a native Python installation
A native installation remains possible with the Python package and Alerta server configuration. The CLI is installed with pip install alerta; configure its endpoint and API key in .alerta.conf for smoke tests or automation.
| Factor | Docker deployment | Native Python deployment |
|---|---|---|
| Repeatability | Compose records service relationships, environment settings, and persistent volumes. | Depends on host Python, package, service, and database configuration being reproduced correctly. |
| Upgrade and rollback | Change an image tag or digest and retain the previous image for rollback. | Coordinate Python packages, system services, and configuration changes on the host. |
| Database operations | Run the database beside Alerta with a named volume or an external managed database. | Install, secure, patch, and back up the database independently. |
| Filesystem ownership | Volume and container user IDs must match the image’s expectations. | Host service users and directory permissions are explicit but easier to misconfigure. |
| Reverse-proxy integration | Proxy to the published container port or an internal Docker network. | Proxy directly to the system service’s listening address. |
| Best fit | A reproducible VPS deployment with clear separation between services. | An organization that already manages Python services natively and has established packaging controls. |
Whichever route you choose, keep the same security requirements: authentication enabled, HTTPS enforced, API keys scoped and rotated, and database credentials protected.
Use the Alerta CLI as an API smoke test
After deployment, the CLI offers a practical way to separate API connectivity from Zabbix action debugging. Install it in an isolated environment where possible, configure .alerta.conf with the Alerta endpoint and an appropriate API key, and submit a test request using the CLI’s documented syntax. Confirm the response, locate the alert in the console, and then delete or resolve the test alert according to your retention policy. Do not put a production administrator key in a shared shell profile.

Operational decision guide
- Choose the webhook when you want the fewest components and are comfortable mapping Zabbix macros and recovery operations in the media type.
- Choose the gateway when a separately managed translator simplifies change control or you need its profile-based endpoint, key, and TLS controls.
- Choose Docker when repeatable deployment, isolated dependencies, and straightforward rollback matter most.
- Choose native Python when your VPS already has a mature Python service-management standard and you accept the additional host-level packaging work.
- Keep Zabbix as the source of detection truth and Alerta as the aggregation and visualization layer. This division makes it easier to prove whether a failure occurred in trigger evaluation, action dispatch, network transport, authentication, or alert rendering.
