The dependable way to monitor a WordPress server is to combine three layers: WordPress’s own Site Health diagnostics, an external monitor that checks the site from outside the host, and application/infrastructure monitoring for PHP, database, CPU, memory, and transaction behavior. This combination tells you whether the server is unreachable, the site is returning an error while technically online, or a particular request is simply too slow.

Begin with a baseline of normal response times and resource use. Then create independent HTTP(S) checks, monitor WP-Cron and loopback requests, and add deeper instrumentation when alerts show a performance problem. Treat example thresholds as starting points, not universal WordPress standards.

What a complete WordPress monitoring setup measures

Uptime and load are different questions. Uptime asks whether users can reach a working site. Load monitoring asks whether the server and application can handle requests within an acceptable time. A site can return HTTP 200 and still display an outage template, wait on a saturated PHP worker pool, or time out on database queries.

Use separate signals because each one has blind spots:

Layer What it measures Typical blind spot
WordPress Site Health Internal tests for HTTPS, loopback requests, cron, PHP extensions, database and scheduled checks It runs inside the WordPress environment and cannot independently prove that visitors can reach the host
External availability check Requests made from outside the hosting account, with status, content or reachability assertions It may show that a page is reachable without identifying which PHP transaction or query is slow
Application and infrastructure observability PHP transactions, database calls, error rates, CPU, memory and related host metrics It requires instrumentation and can miss an outage before the monitoring agent itself reports
Job or heartbeat monitoring Proof that scheduled work such as backups, imports or queue processing actually ran A successful heartbeat does not prove that the public site is healthy

WordPress Developer Resources describes a combination of internal and external uptime monitoring as ideal. It also recommends tracking page-load time, the slowest average transactions and slow logs so that performance degradation is visible before it becomes a full outage.

Establish a baseline before creating alerts

Alerts are useful only when you know what “normal” looks like for this site. Record the current environment and ordinary behavior before changing plugins, themes or hosting settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Record the canonical site URL and the important public, login and transactional paths.
  • Note the hosting architecture, web server, PHP version, database version and whether a reverse proxy or content-delivery layer is in front of WordPress.
  • Capture ordinary page-load or response times at several periods of the day. Include a quiet period and the busiest period you can observe.
  • Record normal CPU and memory behavior from the host dashboard, including whether usage is brief or sustained.
  • List scheduled work: publishing, backups, imports, email queues and any custom jobs triggered by WP-Cron.
  • Write down maintenance windows so planned restarts do not create avoidable incidents.

Do not choose a single CPU percentage as a universal failure line. A site with short bursts and plenty of headroom behaves differently from one that runs continuously near capacity. Alert on sustained deviation from the baseline together with user-visible symptoms such as rising response times, failed transactions or exhausted workers.

Use WordPress Site Health for internal diagnostics

Open the Status and Info tabs

In the WordPress dashboard, go to Tools > Site Health. The Status tab groups findings into critical issues, recommended improvements and passed tests. Use it as a recurring diagnostic record rather than waiting for an outage.

The Info tab exposes the environment details needed to interpret alerts: server architecture, web server, PHP variables, cURL support, upload limits, database information, filesystem permissions and WordPress constants. Save a copy of this information when you establish the baseline and after major hosting or PHP changes. It gives support staff the exact context for a failure without requiring guesswork.

Pay attention to the tests that affect availability

Site Health includes checks for SQL-server currency, SSL/TLS support, loopback requests, late or missed cron events, required PHP extensions and scheduled health checks. A failed loopback test can explain why background requests, REST-based tasks or plugin callbacks fail even though a visitor can load the home page. A late-cron warning indicates that scheduled work is not being started on time; it does not by itself prove that every scheduled action failed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review the test details and the timestamp of the last run. Compare a warning with server logs and the external monitor before making a change. Some checks can fail because of a firewall, authentication header, DNS or certificate problem that affects only internal requests.

Use the Site Health REST tests when automating checks

The Site Health implementation exposes individual tests through the WordPress Site Health REST API. The available checks include background updates, loopback requests, HTTPS status, communication with WordPress.org and authorization headers. These endpoints can be incorporated into an internal diagnostic job, provided access is protected and the results do not expose sensitive environment information.

Keep the API check separate from the public uptime check. A healthy API response confirms that a particular WordPress diagnostic ran; it does not replace a visitor-facing HTTP(S) test.

Add an external monitor that is independent of the host

An external monitor runs outside the WordPress server, so it can detect a host-wide outage, DNS failure or network partition that prevents WordPress from reporting its own status. Configure at least one check for the home page and another representative path that exercises the part of the site that matters to your users.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the check type for the failure you need to catch

Check type How it works Use it for Important limitation
HTTP(S) Requests a URL and evaluates the HTTP result Public availability, redirects, TLS negotiation and response status A status of 200 can still contain an outage or maintenance message
Keyword Checks whether expected or unexpected text appears in the response Detecting an error template, maintenance notice or missing page content Content assertions must be kept current when page copy changes
Ping Checks whether the host responds to ICMP Basic network or host reachability where ICMP is permitted Many firewalls block ICMP even while HTTP works
Port Tests whether a particular service endpoint accepts a connection DNS, SMTP or another listening service A reachable port does not prove the application behind it is healthy
Heartbeat Receives a periodic signal from a job or internal system WP-Cron tasks, backups, imports, queue workers and private systems It proves the sender ran, not that every resulting action succeeded

UptimeRobot documents these monitor types and also provides SSL and domain-expiry monitoring and integrations for consolidating alerts. Whatever service you select, configure retries or consecutive-failure rules so a transient network packet loss does not wake an on-call person unnecessarily.

Configure the first HTTP(S) checks

  1. Create an HTTP(S) monitor for the canonical home-page URL. Validate the expected status and record response time.
  2. Add a second URL that represents a critical user journey, such as a login page, registration form or a public endpoint used by an integration. Do not submit real orders or modify production data from a synthetic check unless the workflow is designed for that purpose.
  3. Add a keyword assertion when a proxy, cache or application can return HTTP 200 while showing an outage, maintenance or database-error message.
  4. Choose probe locations appropriate to your audience. A single location can be affected by a regional routing problem that your users elsewhere do not experience.
  5. Set a notification route that someone actively watches, then trigger a controlled test to verify delivery, escalation and recovery messages.

Protect authenticated or administrative endpoints. Use a dedicated low-privilege account if a check must log in, never place reusable credentials in a public URL, and avoid monitoring a destructive action. For private services, a heartbeat or port check may be safer than exposing an internal page.

Tell “down” apart from “slow”

When an alert arrives, first determine whether the host is unreachable, the application is returning an error, or requests are completing too slowly. This ordering prevents you from spending time tuning PHP when the actual problem is DNS or a failed certificate.

  1. Check the external monitor from a second probe location. If both locations fail, treat the incident as a likely public availability problem.
  2. Inspect the HTTP result, TLS and DNS details. A certificate expiration, redirect loop or name-resolution error requires a different fix from a WordPress fatal error.
  3. Open the site manually and compare the time to first response with the monitor’s result. If the page loads but is slow, continue to application and host metrics.
  4. Review recent deployments, plugin or theme changes, cache purges and hosting events.
  5. Use transaction traces and slow logs to identify whether one PHP request, external call or database query dominates the delay.

WordPress specifically recommends reporting page-load time, slowest average transactions and slow logs regularly. Averages alone can hide a small number of very slow requests, so inspect the slowest transactions and their frequency as well as the overall average.

Monitor PHP, database, CPU and memory for load problems

Instrument the application when page timing is not enough

Application performance monitoring connects a slow page to the code path that produced it. WordPress lists New Relic, AppDynamics and Tideways as examples of profiling tools. New Relic’s WordPress integration combines PHP, Apache and MySQL integrations and provides dashboards for transactions, visitors and call duration. Its WordPress monitoring materials describe uptime and Lighthouse metrics, response-time alerts, memory and CPU alerts, and transaction-error alerts.

Use instrumentation to answer these questions in order:

  • Is the host reachable and are requests arriving?
  • Are response times increasing for all pages or only one transaction?
  • Does one plugin, theme callback or external API dominate the transaction time?
  • Are database queries slow or waiting on locks?
  • Are PHP workers, CPU or memory saturated?
  • Are transaction errors increasing at the same time as the slowdown?

Interpret alert examples as starting points

New Relic’s quickstart materials show example conditions such as memory or CPU above 90 percent, an Apdex score below 0.5 for five minutes, and transaction failures above 10 percent for five minutes. These are product examples, not universal WordPress standards. Adapt the duration and level to your baseline, workload and user impact. A brief CPU spike during a backup may be harmless; sustained CPU saturation accompanied by rising latency is actionable.

Track the relationship between resource use and user-visible behavior. High memory with no response-time impact may reflect normal cache warming, while moderate CPU with exhausted PHP workers can cause severe queuing. Correlate host graphs, transaction traces, database timing and external checks instead of declaring an incident from one graph.

Monitor WP-Cron and other background work

Understand why scheduled events run late

WP-Cron is request-triggered: WordPress checks for due events when it receives a request. On a low-traffic site, few requests may arrive, so scheduled events can run late even while the front end appears healthy. Site Health’s late-or-missed-cron test can reveal this condition.

Use server-side scheduling when timing matters

WordPress.com Developer Resources describes server-side cron as an alternative to the default request-triggered scheduler. A server scheduler can invoke the required WordPress command at a predictable interval. Follow your host’s documented method and ensure that only the intended site and task are invoked.

An external service can also request the site periodically to trigger scheduled work. WordPress.com documentation names services such as Jetpack or Uptime Robot as examples. This approach is useful when server-side scheduling is unavailable, but it adds an external dependency and should be monitored like any other integration.

Prove that the job completed

Do not monitor only the scheduler. Add a heartbeat endpoint or callback that reports when a backup, import, queue worker or other critical job actually finished. Alert when the expected heartbeat is late, and retain the job’s success or failure details for diagnosis. This catches a worker that starts on time but fails halfway through.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Design alerts and the first-response procedure

Every alert should identify the check, affected URL or job, first observed time, current state and a link to the relevant dashboard. Route urgent availability and transaction-failure alerts to a channel someone monitors continuously; send lower-priority recommendations and trend reports to a queue or email list.

Document a short response runbook:

  1. Confirm the alert from a second external location and check whether other URLs fail.
  2. Inspect DNS, certificate, host status and recent changes.
  3. Open Site Health and review loopback, HTTPS, cron and extension findings.
  4. Check CPU, memory, PHP workers, database timing, error rates and the slowest transactions.
  5. Roll back or disable the clearly implicated change only when you have a safe recovery path.
  6. Record the cause, duration, affected paths and corrective action. Verify that the external check returns to normal before closing the incident.

Test alert delivery deliberately. A monitor that works but sends mail to an unmonitored inbox is not operational monitoring. Re-test after changing recipients, integrations, credentials or firewall rules.

A practical implementation sequence

  1. Inventory the site. Record the URL, hosting environment, PHP and database versions, normal response times, ordinary CPU and memory behavior, critical paths and scheduled jobs.
  2. Baseline internal health. Open Tools > Site Health, resolve critical findings where possible, and save the Info details and test results.
  3. Create independent availability checks. Start with an HTTP(S) check for the home page and a representative authenticated or transactional endpoint when appropriate.
  4. Add content validation. Configure a keyword check if a valid HTTP response can still display an outage or maintenance page.
  5. Add job monitoring. Create a heartbeat for critical WP-Cron jobs, backups, imports or queue workers and define how late is late enough to alert.
  6. Add application and host observability. Instrument PHP and database transactions, then collect CPU, memory, worker, error and slow-log data when basic checks cannot explain latency.
  7. Set alert policy. Use consecutive failures, sustained-duration conditions and maintenance windows. Route alerts to a monitored channel and test the route.
  8. Document recovery. Keep the first-response steps, escalation contacts, rollback method and evidence to capture during an incident in one accessible place.

Troubleshooting common monitoring findings

The home page is up but Site Health reports a loopback failure

Inspect firewall rules, security plugins, DNS resolution from the host, TLS validity and authorization headers. A loopback request originates from the server itself, so an external browser test can pass while the internal callback is blocked. Re-run the Site Health test after correcting the underlying network or authentication issue.

WP-Cron is late on a low-traffic site

Confirm which events are due and whether the job itself succeeds. If requests are infrequent, use a documented server-side schedule or an external trigger, then add a heartbeat that proves completion. Do not assume that clearing the warning alone repaired the task.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HTTP checks pass but visitors report an outage

Add keyword validation and monitor a path that exercises the affected feature. A cached page can return 200 while the origin, login flow or database-backed transaction is failing. Compare external results with transaction errors and recent changes.

Response times rise with normal CPU

Inspect PHP worker saturation, database waits, slow queries, external API calls and queueing. CPU percentage by itself cannot show blocked workers or a database bottleneck. Trace the slowest transactions and compare them with slow logs.

CPU or memory alerts fire during a known maintenance job

Compare the duration and user impact with the baseline. If the site remains responsive, narrow the alert to sustained resource use or combine it with response-time and error conditions. Keep the maintenance window documented so operators can distinguish expected work from an unplanned event.

How to compare monitoring options

When evaluating a service or assembling several tools, score each option against the same practical criteria:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Criterion Questions to ask
Independence Does the check run outside the WordPress host and from locations relevant to your visitors?
Check coverage Does it support HTTP(S), keyword, ping, port and heartbeat checks required by your failure modes?
Application and infrastructure depth Can it show PHP transactions, database timing, errors, CPU, memory and slow logs, or will you need another system?
Alert routing Can it deliver to the channel your responder monitors and escalate when an alert remains unresolved?
Retention and reporting Can you review historical uptime, response time, slowest transactions and incident duration?
Private-endpoint support Can it monitor internal jobs safely without exposing credentials or administrative interfaces?

A simple site may need only Site Health plus external HTTP and keyword checks. A busy store, membership site or publishing workflow usually needs transaction, database and host metrics as well as job heartbeats. Add complexity when it answers a question your current checks cannot answer.

Keep monitoring useful over time

Review alert history and trend data after every incident and after major changes. Update keyword assertions when page content changes, rotate credentials used by synthetic checks, and remove checks for retired URLs. Revisit the baseline after a hosting migration, PHP upgrade, major plugin change or traffic shift.

Review Site Health on a regular schedule, not only when a monitor pages you. Confirm that SSL and domain-expiry checks still cover the right names, that heartbeats arrive after each scheduled job, and that the person listed for escalation is still responsible. This layered routine gives you both early warning and enough evidence to fix the underlying cause.

The operating principle

Use Site Health to understand WordPress from inside, an external HTTP(S) monitor to prove that users can reach it, and application and infrastructure metrics to explain slowness or saturation. Add keyword checks for misleading 200 responses and heartbeats for WP-Cron and other background work. Correlate those signals, alert on sustained deviation and user impact, and keep a tested response procedure. That is more reliable than treating any single uptime percentage, CPU number or dashboard status as the whole truth.
