There is no universal “AI rank” for a brand. Reliable monitoring means measuring each search platform in its own reporting system, recording whether your pages were cited, and then connecting those observations to visits and conversions without treating a citation as a recommendation or sale.
This guide shows how to establish Google and Bing baselines, run repeatable prompt checks, interpret the metrics each service actually reports, and build a reporting routine that remains useful as AI-search interfaces change.
Define visibility before you measure it
AI search can expose a brand in several different ways: a model may mention the name, cite one of its URLs, recommend a product, provide a link that receives a click, or contribute to a visit that converts. Those are separate events. A page citation proves that a system used the page as a source for a particular answer; it does not prove that the brand was endorsed, that a user clicked, or that a lead or sale followed.

Google and Bing also expose different surfaces and measurements. Google’s documentation covers generative features in Google Search and Discover, while Bing’s AI Performance report covers Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing, and selected partner integrations. Because the scope and counting rules differ, adding their numbers into one “AI visibility score” creates a number with no defensible meaning.
#1 Best Overall
A practical visibility vocabulary
- Mention: the brand name appears in an answer, whether or not a URL is linked.
- Citation: the system attributes information to a page or displays that page as a source.
- Recommendation language: the answer explicitly suggests choosing, buying, visiting, or contacting the brand.
- Referral: a user reaches your site from an AI-search result or linked source.
- Outcome: a measured action such as a signup, qualified lead, purchase, or time spent.
Keep these fields separate in your reports. A rise in citations can coexist with flat traffic if answers satisfy users without a click; a fall in citations can occur while conversions rise because a smaller number of highly qualified visits improved.
Build a measurement sheet that preserves context
Use one row per observation and retain the definitions supplied by the platform. The following columns prevent later confusion:
| Field | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Platform | Google Search, Bing, Copilot, or another named surface | Different systems expose different reports and counting rules. |
| Feature or mode | For example, AI Overview, AI Mode, Bing AI summary, or Copilot | A platform can use several models and interfaces with different answers. |
| Date range and retrieval date | The reporting period and the date you exported or observed it | Interfaces, models, and availability change over time. |
| Metric as defined by the platform | Impressions, citations, cited pages, or another label; never silently rename it | “Citation” in one service is not necessarily equivalent to “impression” in another. |
| Cited URL | The exact canonical or displayed page address | Page-level patterns reveal which content is being used. |
| Prompt or grounding query | The exact wording for a manual check, or the platform’s sampled query where provided | Small wording changes can produce different answers and sources. |
| Locale and market | Country, language, device, and signed-in or logged-out state when relevant | Generative answers can vary by geography and context. |
| Referral visits | Sessions attributed in your analytics system | Separates visibility from actual site traffic. |
| Conversions | Leads, purchases, registrations, or another defined goal | Connects search exposure to business results without claiming causation from a citation alone. |
Use a consistent reporting interval, such as a weekly export with a monthly trend review. Preserve the raw export alongside any calculated rates so that a later change in a dashboard definition does not erase the original context.

Establish the Google Search Console baseline
Google Search Central directs site owners to Search Console’s Generative AI performance report for performance in generative AI features on Google Search and Discover. Google also states that AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in the overall Performance report under the Web search type, while noting that these features can use different models and techniques and may show different responses and links. Treat the dedicated report and the general Web report as related but not interchangeable views. See Google’s guide to optimizing for generative AI features and Google’s AI Features and Your Website documentation.

Set up access
- Verify the correct property in Google Search Console. A domain property is useful when several protocols or subdomains serve the same brand; a URL-prefix property is appropriate when you need a narrower scope.
- Open the property’s Performance area and look for the Generative AI performance report. Report labels and availability can change, so use the current Search Console interface rather than relying on an old screenshot.
- Export the available date range and retain the property, filters, and export date in your log. Record which dimensions and metrics the account exposes; do not assume that every account has identical detail.
- Review the overall Web performance report separately. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode are included there, but that statement does not mean the overall report has the same dimensions as the dedicated generative-AI report.
- Segment by page, query, country, device, and date only when the selected report supports that dimension. Mark unavailable breakdowns as “not reported” rather than filling them with estimates.
- Join Search Console observations to Analytics data in a separate step. Search Console describes search performance signals; Analytics can be used to examine visits, time spent, and conversions.
How to interpret Google’s numbers
A Search Console exposure or performance signal indicates activity measured by Google’s reporting system. It does not reveal every internal prompt, model decision, or ranking calculation. Google explicitly cautions that third-party tools do not have access to its internal ranking or AI systems, so a vendor’s estimate cannot be presented as a hidden Google ranking feed.
Eligibility is also narrower than a guarantee. Google says pages that are eligible for Search can be considered for AI Overviews and AI Mode without additional technical requirements, but eligibility does not guarantee that Google will crawl, index, or serve a page in an AI feature. Existing SEO fundamentals and helpful, reliable, people-first content remain the foundation; unsupported “hacks,” special markup claims, or formulaic chunking promises should not replace them.
Establish the Bing Webmaster Tools baseline
Microsoft announced the AI Performance report as a public preview on February 10, 2026. Its documented scope includes Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing, and selected partner integrations. The report can show total citations, average cited pages, sampled grounding queries, URL-level citation activity, and changes over time. Read the launch details at Microsoft’s AI Performance announcement.
Run the report
- Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and open the AI Performance area when it is available for the property.
- Select a date range and export the headline totals before applying filters. Store the range and export date with the file.
- Review the list of cited URLs. Note whether a small group of pages supplies most citations or whether activity is distributed across guides, product pages, documentation, and other content types.
- Inspect the sampled grounding queries. They are a sample of overall citation activity, not a complete list of every prompt that may have produced a citation.
- Compare current totals with an equivalent prior period. Label changes as observational trends; the dashboard does not turn them into a universal rank or authority score.
- Keep URL-level activity, total citations, average cited pages, and sampled queries in separate columns. Do not average them together.
What each Bing signal can and cannot tell you
- Total citations count citation activity in the supported experiences for the selected period. They do not show where a citation appeared in an answer or whether anyone clicked.
- Average cited pages describe citation patterns across the reporting period. They are not a page rank, authority rating, or measure of importance.
- Grounding queries provide sampled examples of the queries used to ground answers. Their presence does not mean the sample covers your market’s full query set.
- URL-level citation activity identifies pages that appeared as cited sources. It does not establish that those pages were the only or most influential sources.
- Trends show movement in the dashboard’s own measurements. A trend can reflect changing prompts, models, coverage, or reporting behavior as well as changes to your site.
Understand the June 2026 preview features
In a June 16, 2026 announcement, Microsoft described Intents, Topics, Citation Share, and Compare as preview capabilities beginning a global rollout. Check the current account before describing any of them as generally available; rollout status can differ by property or region. The announcement is at Microsoft’s Bing Search feature update.

Citation Share is an observational measure of a site’s share of citations for a grounding query. Microsoft’s description says it does not expose competitor domains, represent traffic share, or assign content-quality scores. The expanded preview therefore helps you study citation patterns, not discover a single ranking position or market-share percentage.
Google Search Console and Bing AI Performance compared
| Axis | Google Search Console | Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage documented by the providers | Generative AI features on Google Search and Discover; Google separately says AI Overviews and AI Mode appear in overall Web performance data. | Copilot, Bing AI-generated summaries, and selected partner integrations. |
| Signals | Generative AI performance reporting plus overall Search Console Web performance; Analytics supplies site-outcome data. | Total citations, average cited pages, sampled grounding queries, URL-level citation activity, and time trends. |
| What the signals do not establish | They do not expose Google’s internal ranking or model systems, and eligibility does not guarantee crawling, indexing, or serving. | They do not establish rank, answer placement, authority, importance, traffic share, or content quality. |
| Maturity noted in provider announcements | Check the current Search Console account and documentation for report availability and detail. | AI Performance was announced as a public preview; Intents, Topics, Citation Share, and Compare were described as a June 2026 preview rollout. |
Create a repeatable manual prompt-check program
First-party dashboards will not show every answer a user sees. Add a small, fixed set of manual checks so that you can inspect wording, recommendation strength, citations, and factual accuracy. Repeat the same checks over time instead of treating one search as a benchmark.
Choose the prompts
- Use questions real prospects ask about your category, problem, alternatives, pricing, implementation, and trust.
- Include branded questions (“What does [brand] offer?”) and unbranded category questions (“Which tools solve [problem]?”).
- Keep wording stable for trend checks, then maintain a second rotating set for new language and emerging topics.
- Do not claim that the set represents the entire market. The reviewed provider documentation does not establish a stable cross-platform query sample or a universal measurement methodology.
Record every observation
- Write the exact prompt, including punctuation and any follow-up turn.
- Record the date and time, platform and product mode, country or locale, language, device, and sign-in state when relevant.
- Save the complete answer or a permitted transcript, not just a screenshot of the first sentence.
- Mark whether the brand is absent, mentioned neutrally, recommended, criticized, or compared.
- List every cited URL and identify which claims each URL appears to support.
- Check the answer for material inaccuracies, outdated prices, wrong ownership, unsupported health or financial claims, and mismatched geography.
- Store the observation with a stable ID so a later reviewer can distinguish a changed answer from a data-entry error.
A community question often phrased as “How can I find the AI prompts where my website is being cited?” captures the practical difficulty: most systems do not expose a complete prompt log. It is useful as a user question, not as evidence of a representative survey; the original discussion is available at this Reddit thread.

Connect visibility with traffic and business outcomes
Keep three reporting layers distinct:
- Exposure layer: platform-reported impressions, citations, cited pages, or sampled queries.
- Behavior layer: referral sessions, landing pages, engagement, and time spent in your analytics system.
- Outcome layer: completed goals such as a form submission, trial, purchase, or qualified sales opportunity.
Use consistent campaign tagging and referral classifications where the platform permits it, but expect some AI interfaces to hide or rewrite referral information. Compare annotated time periods rather than claiming that a particular citation caused a conversion. A citation is evidence of source inclusion; attribution requires a recorded visit or another defensible measurement link.
Rank #4
A useful monthly review
- List pages with new or sustained citations on each platform.
- Check whether cited pages are accurate, current, indexable, and aligned with the claims the answer makes.
- Compare referral sessions and conversions for those pages with their own prior periods, without merging unlike platform metrics.
- Review manual prompts where the brand was misrepresented or omitted from a high-value answer.
- Assign content or technical fixes, then annotate the date so later movement has a documented change to compare against.
Troubleshoot common monitoring failures
“The dashboard shows citations, but traffic did not increase.”
Check whether the cited surface provides a clickable link, whether the answer satisfies the user without a visit, and whether analytics classifies the referral correctly. Keep the citation observation and traffic result as separate findings.
“A third-party tracker reports a different Google visibility number.”
Compare its query set, locale, date, feature definition, and sampling method with your Search Console data. Do not describe the tracker as reading Google’s internal ranking or AI systems; Google says third-party tools do not have that access.
“Bing’s grounding queries do not include our important questions.”
Remember that grounding queries are sampled. Continue your own fixed prompt checks and treat the dashboard sample as directional evidence rather than a complete query inventory.
“Citation Share looks like a rank.”
It is an observational share of citations for a grounding query in the preview described by Microsoft. It does not provide competitor domains, traffic share, or a content-quality score, so report it with that definition attached.
“Our page is eligible but never appears in an AI answer.”
Eligibility is only permission to be considered. Google states that eligibility does not guarantee crawling, indexing, or serving. Verify crawlability, indexing, clear page purpose, and helpful people-first content, then continue measuring rather than adding unsupported markup or attempting a formulaic hack.
“Two checks on the same day produced different answers.”
Save both observations with their exact prompts, modes, locales, and times. AI systems can produce different responses and links, and Google notes that AI Overviews and AI Mode may use different models and techniques.
Use a reporting template that stays auditable
A simple workbook or database can contain four linked tables:
| Table | Minimum columns |
|---|---|
| Platform exports | Platform, feature, property, date range, metric name, metric value, export date, filters. |
| Page citations | Platform, cited URL, first observed date, last observed date, citation count as defined by the platform, page type. |
| Prompt checks | Prompt ID, exact prompt, platform, mode, locale, timestamp, answer text or archive, mention status, recommendation status, cited URLs, accuracy flag. |
| Outcomes | Landing URL, referral source, sessions, engagement measure, conversion type, conversion count, attribution window. |
When presenting results to executives, show one panel per platform and a separate outcomes panel. A short note beside every chart should state the surface, date range, sampling limitation, and metric definition. This format makes a changing dashboard understandable without pretending that different providers measure the same thing.
What to do next
- Verify your site in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
- Export each platform’s available AI-visibility report and document the exact definitions.
- Set up the measurement sheet with platform, feature, dates, URLs, queries, referrals, and conversions as separate fields.
- Select a stable prompt set and run it at a fixed interval across the markets you serve.
- Review cited pages for factual accuracy and usefulness before changing content.
- Report exposure, behavior, and outcomes in separate sections, with preview status and sampling caveats attached.
The durable approach is platform-by-platform observation plus disciplined business measurement. It gives you evidence of where AI systems use your content without inventing a universal rank that the providers do not report.
