Monitor a GPU rack by measuring air at server inlets at several rack heights, metering rack power at the level you need, and sending both sets of readings to a system that can alert operators. Use the server manufacturer’s operating limits and the applicable ASHRAE environmental class to set responses: a sensor reading or generic temperature target alone cannot establish safe operation for every server.
Measure temperature where air enters the servers
For air-cooled servers, inlet air is the key facility-facing temperature measurement. A room average can hide a hot spot at one rack or height, so measure at the rack rather than relying on room-level readings.
ENERGY STAR’s summary of ASHRAE guidance recommends placing inlet temperature sensors at the top, middle, and bottom of the rack, centered in front of the equipment and about 2 inches from it. These positions help reveal whether cool air reaches all of the equipment. ENERGY STAR also describes a bottom-front position for incoming cold air, a top-front position to check cooling at the top, and a top-back position as a likely hot location. Rear or exhaust readings can help with diagnosis, but do not substitute for inlet readings.

Use probes that the rack PDU or monitoring system can read. ASHRAE TC 9.9 describes intelligent network-connected rack PDUs that may support independently positioned temperature and humidity probes, real-time reporting, and excursion alerts. Probe count, placement options, communications protocol, and compatibility depend on the specific model.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose how to measure rack power
Use a metered rack PDU that is rated for the installed electrical service. Decide what operators need to see before selecting one:
- Total PDU input: the rack PDU’s overall incoming load.
- Branch circuit load: the load on each monitored branch, where the PDU supports it.
- Outlet or device consumption: a more granular view, where supported and useful for the operating task.
Monitoring guidance treats input power as part of the instrumentation picture alongside temperature, airflow, and utilization; it does not prescribe one metering granularity for every rack. Check the PDU documentation and facility electrical design to confirm what the device actually measures.

A metered PDU with compatible temperature probes can combine power and rack-environment readings, but the product category alone does not guarantee fit. Confirm voltage, current, phase, plug and receptacle type, circuit protection, rack form factor, outlet count, metering level, network support, and sensor compatibility with the installation.

Set excursion notifications using the server’s documented operating limits and the applicable environmental class. Account for sensor accuracy, placement, and normal variation across the rack when deciding what should trigger an alert. The guidance cited here does not establish a universal GPU-rack alarm threshold or polling interval; use the capabilities of the sensors and monitoring platform alongside equipment and facility requirements.
Use readings to diagnose airflow and cooling
Compare inlet readings across the rack before acting on a single value. A warmer top inlet than lower inlets can point to uneven vertical air distribution or recirculation. If available, compare exhaust readings as diagnostic context to help understand where heat is accumulating. ENERGY STAR also identifies thermal imaging as a way to reveal hot and cold areas, cooling or airflow issues, and potential electrical hot spots. Thermal imaging is a diagnostic aid, not a replacement for continuous probes or qualified electrical inspection.

Apply the right limits to GPU equipment
ASHRAE distinguishes a recommended environmental range from an allowable operating envelope. The allowable envelope describes conditions under which equipment has been tested to function; it is not a reliability target. Long exposure outside recommended conditions can reduce reliability and longevity, while operating beyond the allowable environment risks equipment failure. Use the server manufacturer’s limits and the applicable environmental class for operating decisions rather than applying a generic rack target.

ASHRAE’s 2023 Handbook discussion of the 2021 Thermal Guidelines notes that high-density equipment using powerful CPUs, GPUs, and memory needs increased cooling and may require separate environmental controls or cooling systems. That does not mean all GPU servers share the same cooling method or temperature limits. For liquid-cooled racks, add monitoring appropriate to the coolant loops and the equipment vendor’s design; the guidance cited here does not define one universal liquid-cooling sensor plan.

Combine rack measurements with server telemetry where useful
Server management interfaces may expose inlet or component sensor readings. Check the documentation for the particular server to learn which readings are available and what they represent. A component sensor is not automatically equivalent to a rack inlet measurement.
Independent rack probes add spatial context at chosen rack positions, while PDU metering shows power at the levels the model supports. These approaches can complement each other. Compare monitoring options by measurement point, spatial coverage, accuracy, update and alert capability, network or DCIM/BMS compatibility, installation effort, redundancy, and electrical fit; no one measurement approach or metering level is established as best for every rack.
