You can collect a Shopify store’s publicly exposed product data from its /products.json storefront route and compare timestamped snapshots on a daily schedule—without an API key for this particular method. It is an implementation described by TidyTools, not a documented, universally supported Shopify API. Public availability is not blanket permission to automate collection, and the feed may not be available or provide prices comparable across markets.
What the products.json method does
The method requests a store’s public storefront catalog, then saves the returned product and variant data so later runs can be compared with earlier ones. TidyTools describes fields including product titles, variant prices, and availability. This route is distinct from Shopify’s authenticated Admin API and official Storefront API.
TidyTools reports that requests return up to 250 products, with at most 100 pages—25,000 products per catalog or collection. These are figures reported in its 2026 article, not limits confirmed by an official Shopify specification for /products.json. Treat them as implementation guidance, not a service guarantee. - Choose the storefronts and scope. Record the target store URLs and decide whether you are tracking each full catalog or a particular collection. Do not assume every product is exposed through the route.
- Request the public catalog route. The described route is
/products.jsonon the storefront. A public request may work without an API key, but access can be blocked or disabled; do not try to evade controls. - Schedule a conservative daily run. A daily check gives you observations at the times it runs, not a record of every price change during the intervening hours. Avoid excessive requests and respect the store’s access controls and applicable terms.
- Save timestamped snapshots. Retain the retrieval time and source store or URL alongside the returned data. Keep failed or empty responses as errors rather than treating them as a new, empty catalog.
- Match products and variants consistently. Compare the same product and variant across runs, rather than comparing a product-level price with a different variant. Preserve enough identifying information to distinguish variants when titles or prices change.
- Compare under consistent market conditions. Use the same visitor geography and currency settings for each run where possible. The feed may not identify currency, and prices can vary by visitor location, so a numerical difference alone does not prove a like-for-like price change.
- Flag anomalies for review. Alert on missing data, unexpectedly empty results, and failed requests. A missing product or response can reflect access or feed behavior rather than a confirmed deletion or price change.
What the snapshots can—and cannot—tell you
Variant prices, not necessarily a single comparable price
A product can have multiple variants with different prices. Compare variant to matching variant, and retain the market context. TidyTools reports that the product data may omit currency and that prices can depend on the visitor’s country, particularly relevant when Shopify Markets is in use. A daily snapshot therefore records what the request observed under its conditions, not necessarily a universal price.

Availability, not exact stock counts
TidyTools reports that the feed can show variant availability but does not provide exact stock quantities. Do not interpret an available/unavailable value as an inventory count.
Incomplete coverage and missed changes
The route is not guaranteed to work for every store. TidyTools reports that some stores disable the feed or block requests from data-center infrastructure, and that some headless storefronts do not expose it. A failed request is not evidence that the catalog is empty. Because the job runs periodically, it also cannot establish the precise time a price changed between observations.

Access rules and official Shopify alternatives
Shopify’s API Terms restrict systematic or automated data collection through the Shopify API, including scraping, and limit requests to what the relevant permissions allow. That is an explicit rule for use of the Shopify API; the cited material does not settle whether every unauthenticated request to a public storefront URL is governed identically. A route being publicly reachable does not by itself grant permission for collection at any scale or for any purpose. Review applicable terms, respect access controls, and do not evade blocks.
