The TICK stack gives a Linux VPS a complete metrics path: Telegraf collects measurements, InfluxDB stores them, Chronograf provides dashboards, and Kapacitor evaluates data and sends alerts. A minimal deployment needs only Telegraf and InfluxDB; add Chronograf for visual exploration and Kapacitor when you need processing, deadman checks, or notifications.
This guide lays out the architecture, an Ubuntu-oriented installation sequence, verification commands, port and firewall decisions, and the differences between a single-host package installation and a Docker Compose deployment.

Each component has one job in the monitoring pipeline. Keeping those jobs separate makes it easier to diagnose a failure and to decide which services your VPS actually needs.
Telegraf collects metrics
Telegraf is the agent installed on the VPS being monitored. Its system inputs gather host measurements such as CPU, memory, disk, and network activity. You can add application-specific input plugins later when host metrics are not enough.

InfluxDB stores time-series data
InfluxDB receives the points emitted by Telegraf and stores them as time-series data. In the default Telegraf setup described by InfluxData, starting Telegraf sends system metrics to InfluxDB and automatically creates a database named telegraf.
Chronograf displays and administers
Chronograf is InfluxData’s web interface for the TICK stack. It lets you inspect hosts, use pre-created dashboards, explore measurements, and administer alert connections. It is optional for collection: Telegraf can write directly to InfluxDB without Chronograf.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsKapacitor processes and alerts
Kapacitor evaluates data and runs alert tasks. Its stream tasks process data as it is written to InfluxDB, while batch tasks query and process data for a defined interval. Kapacitor is optional and is not required to use Chronograf.
Choose a topology for your VPS
For a small VPS, placing all four services on one host is the simplest arrangement. Telegraf sends to InfluxDB over the loopback interface, Chronograf connects to the local InfluxDB and Kapacitor services, and only the dashboard port needs administrator access. This minimizes networking and service-management work, but all components share the VPS’s CPU, memory, disk, and failure domain.
A separated topology installs Telegraf on the application VPS and points its output at an InfluxDB host elsewhere. Chronograf and Kapacitor can also run on a separate monitoring host. This isolates monitoring from the workload being measured and allows the services to be scaled independently, but introduces network routing, authentication, and additional administration. The official setup material documents both local and separate-host patterns; it does not publish a universal VPS size or a performance threshold at which you must separate them.
| Approach | What it means | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Package services with systemd | Install services on the Linux host, use host configuration files, and control them with systemd. | Direct host integration, familiar file paths, and straightforward service logs. | Packages and service versions depend on the distribution repositories you select. |
| Docker Compose | Run InfluxDB, Telegraf, and Kapacitor as containers connected by a Compose network. | Container lifecycle and networking are defined together in one deployment. | The documented Compose package does not include Chronograf; add it separately for a four-component stack. |
| Single VPS | Run the monitoring services and the monitored workload on one machine. | Lowest networking and administration overhead. | A host outage affects both the workload and its monitoring. |
| Separated services | Install Telegraf on the workload host and send data to a different InfluxDB and monitoring host. | Isolation and independent scaling. | Requires reachable service addresses, firewall rules, and credentials across hosts. |
Plan addresses, credentials, and ports
Before installation, decide whether Telegraf will write to http://localhost:8086 or to an InfluxDB address on another host. Use the loopback address only when InfluxDB is on the same VPS. For a remote database, replace it with the private address or hostname that the VPS can reach.

| 8888 | Chronograf web interface | Allow only administration networks that need the dashboard. |
| 8086 | InfluxDB connection endpoint used when adding a source in Chronograf | Keep private unless remote clients genuinely need access. |
| 9092 | Kapacitor URL used when connecting it in Chronograf | Keep private and allow only trusted monitoring hosts. |
These are implementation defaults, not capacity or performance measurements. On a public VPS, apply both your provider’s firewall and the host firewall. The installation documentation identifies the service ports but does not prescribe one universal firewall policy, so permit only the administration and service-to-service paths your topology requires. Keep InfluxDB and Kapacitor off the public internet unless remote access is intentional, and enable authentication where your deployment supports it. If different people need different permissions, Chronograf’s installation guidance recommends separate Chronograf and InfluxDB credentials.
Install the package-based stack on Ubuntu
The archived Ubuntu 16.04 walkthroughs are useful for the order of operations and file locations, but they are not current support guarantees. Check that the Telegraf, InfluxDB, Chronograf, and Kapacitor packages you choose support your present Ubuntu release before installing. The sequence below deliberately separates collection from presentation so that you can verify data early.
1. Install and start InfluxDB
Install InfluxDB using a repository or package source that supports your Ubuntu release. Start the service and confirm that it is listening on the address you selected. If InfluxDB is on the same VPS, the Telegraf output will use http://localhost:8086; if it is remote, verify routing and firewall access before moving on.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →2. Install Telegraf on the monitored VPS
Install Telegraf on every Linux host whose metrics you want to collect. The documented Linux configuration path is:
/etc/telegraf/telegraf.conf
The packaged configuration includes system inputs suitable for an initial host view. Review the file before starting the agent, especially the output section.
3. Point Telegraf at InfluxDB
In /etc/telegraf/telegraf.conf, configure the InfluxDB output. A local, minimal output block is:
[[outputs.influxdb]]
urls = ["http://localhost:8086"]
database = "telegraf"
For a separate database host, replace the URL with that host’s reachable address. Keep the database name consistent with the queries and dashboards you plan to use. If authentication is enabled, add the credentials required by your InfluxDB installation rather than exposing an unauthenticated endpoint.

4. Start Telegraf and check its service state
Start the agent with:
sudo systemctl start telegraf
Check the service status and logs using your distribution’s systemd tools. A running process alone is not proof of ingestion: the important test is whether points arrive in the telegraf database.
5. Verify ingestion through the InfluxDB API
Query InfluxDB before building dashboards. For a local InfluxDB HTTP endpoint, you can use its query API to list measurements:
curl -G 'http://localhost:8086/query'
--data-urlencode 'db=telegraf'
--data-urlencode 'q=SHOW MEASUREMENTS'
The response should include measurements created by Telegraf’s system inputs. Inspect a CPU measurement such as usage_idle and confirm that it has recent points. If the database or measurement is empty, fix collection or the output connection before proceeding to Chronograf.
Add Chronograf after data is flowing
Install Chronograf only after Telegraf-to-InfluxDB ingestion works. This order prevents an empty dashboard from being mistaken for a collection failure.
- Install a Chronograf package compatible with your Ubuntu release.
- Start the Chronograf service and open its web interface at
http://localhost:8888from the VPS itself, or use an approved administration path if the interface is on a separate host. - In Chronograf, add the InfluxDB hostname or IP and port
8086. - Authenticate with the InfluxDB credentials configured for this connection.
- Optionally add Kapacitor using its URL and port
9092.
Chronograf can display hosts and pre-created dashboards as soon as it can read the measurements in InfluxDB. It does not collect metrics itself, and Kapacitor is not required for these dashboards.
Add Kapacitor only when you need processing or alerts
Kapacitor is the component to add when storing and viewing data is not enough. It can process a live stream of points written to InfluxDB or run a batch query over a time interval. Those tasks can implement threshold alerts, relative comparisons, deadman checks, and notification workflows.
Stream tasks
A stream task follows data as it is written to InfluxDB. This is appropriate when an alert should react to incoming points with minimal delay.

Batch tasks
A batch task queries and processes data for an interval. It is useful when the rule depends on a window of historical values rather than one incoming point.
Connect Kapacitor to Chronograf
Start Kapacitor, ensure its service endpoint is reachable from Chronograf, and add it at port 9092. Chronograf’s alert administration can then use Kapacitor. Event handlers documented for this workflow include Slack and PagerDuty, alongside the threshold, relative, and deadman alert types.
If you only need dashboards and ad-hoc exploration, stop after Chronograf. Installing Kapacitor adds another service, task configuration, credentials, and notification path to operate.
Build a useful first dashboard
Begin with host-level measurements because they reveal whether the VPS itself is under pressure:
- CPU: inspect utilization and the
usage_idlemeasurement to see how much idle capacity remains. - Memory: watch available and consumed memory over time rather than relying on one instantaneous value.
- Disk: review space and activity for each relevant filesystem or device.
- Network: compare traffic over time and check the interfaces that carry application traffic.
Use Chronograf’s host list and pre-created dashboards for the initial view. Once those panels show recent points, add application-specific Telegraf input plugins and create dashboards around the measurements they produce. Keep the database name, measurement names, and tags consistent so that a panel does not silently query a different series than the one Telegraf writes.
Operational checks that prevent silent monitoring failures
Check the collection path in order
- Confirm the Telegraf service is running on the monitored VPS.
- Open
/etc/telegraf/telegraf.confand verify the InfluxDB URL andtelegrafdatabase name. - From the Telegraf host, test network reachability to the InfluxDB address and port
8086. - Query the InfluxDB API and look for recent points in a system measurement such as
usage_idle. - Only after the query succeeds, check Chronograf’s source configuration and dashboard time range.
- If alerts are expected, verify the Kapacitor connection at port
9092, task status, and the event handler configuration.
Separate service failures from empty data
An unreachable Chronograf page is a web-interface problem; an empty Chronograf panel can instead mean that Telegraf is stopped, the output URL is wrong, the database name differs, or InfluxDB received no points. Querying InfluxDB directly distinguishes these cases. Likewise, Kapacitor cannot alert on a series that Telegraf never wrote, so validate ingestion before debugging a task.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot common deployment problems
No telegraf database appears
Check that InfluxDB was started before Telegraf, that Telegraf’s output URL points to the correct host, and that the database is named exactly telegraf. For a remote InfluxDB, inspect both the provider and host firewalls and confirm that the remote address resolves from the VPS.

The database exists but has no recent CPU points
Review Telegraf’s system input configuration and service logs. Confirm that the agent is still running after configuration changes and that the query is using the same database. Inspect a CPU measurement such as usage_idle rather than relying only on the database list.
Chronograf cannot add InfluxDB
Use the InfluxDB host or IP that is reachable from the Chronograf host and port 8086. Check credentials and whether a firewall permits that specific connection. If InfluxDB is local to Chronograf, test the loopback address first.
Chronograf loads but alert options are unavailable
Chronograf does not require Kapacitor for dashboards, but alert processing does. Start Kapacitor, verify its endpoint at port 9092, and add it as a Chronograf connection. Then inspect the task and event-handler configuration.
Docker Compose has no Chronograf page
The documented Docker tutorial bundles InfluxDB, Telegraf, and Kapacitor, not Chronograf. Add a compatible Chronograf service and connect it to the containerized InfluxDB and Kapacitor endpoints, or use the package installation route for the interface.
Package installation or Docker Compose?
Choose package services when the VPS is managed as a conventional Linux host and you want configuration under /etc, systemd service controls, and host-level logs. Choose Compose when your team already operates containers and wants service definitions, networking, and lifecycle commands kept together. Either route still requires the same logical checks: Telegraf must write to InfluxDB, Chronograf must reach port 8086, and Kapacitor must be reachable at 9092 when alerts are enabled.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not assume that a Compose example is a complete four-component deployment. The documented package omits Chronograf, so explicitly add it if dashboards are part of your requirement.
Security and maintenance considerations
- Expose port
8888only to the networks that administer Chronograf. - Keep ports
8086and9092private unless a documented remote connection requires them. - Use separate Chronograf and InfluxDB credentials when administrators need distinct permissions.
- Review package and container versions against the Ubuntu release and deployment method you operate; archived Ubuntu 16.04 instructions do not guarantee support for current releases.
- Monitor disk usage for InfluxDB and plan retention and backup policies appropriate to your workload. No universal retention period or VPS sizing rule is established by the cited setup documentation.
- After changing an output URL, credentials, or task, repeat the direct API and service-connectivity checks instead of assuming the dashboard will reveal a configuration error.
What the TICK stack can and cannot tell you
The stack provides a clear path from host measurements to dashboards and, with Kapacitor, automated decisions. It does not by itself define alert thresholds, retention periods, hardware requirements, or CPU overhead that apply to every VPS. Those values depend on the number of hosts, enabled inputs, sampling configuration, query workload, and notification rules. Start with the documented defaults, measure your own workload, and adjust after observing actual storage and service behavior.
Recommended rollout sequence
- Choose a single-host or separated topology and identify the private addresses involved.
- Install and start InfluxDB.
- Install Telegraf on the monitored VPS and configure
[[outputs.influxdb]]with the correct URL anddatabase = "telegraf". - Start Telegraf with
sudo systemctl start telegraf. - Query the InfluxDB API and verify recent system points, including a CPU series such as
usage_idle. - Install Chronograf, open port
8888only to administrators, and add InfluxDB on port8086. - Add Kapacitor on port
9092only if processing or alert notifications are required. - Apply provider and host firewall rules, credentials, and ongoing service checks.
Following this order leaves you with a working collection path before you add dashboards or alert complexity, which is the most reliable way to find configuration errors on a Linux VPS.
