To monitor a server with Checkmk, add it as a host, install the matching Checkmk agent, register and test the agent connection, discover the services the server exposes, accept and tune the useful checks, activate the pending configuration, and operate the result from dashboards and notifications. Linux and Windows servers normally use the Checkmk agent; network appliances commonly use SNMP, while cloud services, containers, and virtual machines may require documented API integrations.
What Checkmk means by “server health”
Checkmk does not reduce health to a single CPU percentage. It evaluates a host and the services running on it, then presents their states and history so an operator can distinguish an unavailable machine from a degraded application or a capacity problem.
Availability
The host state answers whether Checkmk can reach the monitored object. Typical states are UP, DOWN, UNREACH, and PEND. A DOWN state generally means the host itself is unavailable; UNREACH indicates that Checkmk cannot establish a usable path to it, often because an upstream device or route is also unavailable. PEND means Checkmk has not yet established a state.
Service state
Individual checks use OK, WARN, CRIT, UNKNOWN, and PEND. A server can be UP while a filesystem, process, web service, hardware sensor, or other component is in WARN or CRIT. This distinction is what lets a team respond to user-impacting failures without treating every host as simply “up” or “down.”

Capacity, workload, and hardware
Agent data can expose filesystem usage and resource metrics such as CPU and RAM, process checks, service checks, hardware sensors, and vendor-specific hardware information when that data is available. These checks cover different risks: a full filesystem threatens writes, a runaway process affects workload, and a failed temperature or storage sensor can precede a hardware outage.
Health of the monitoring system itself
Checkmk can monitor parts of its own installation, including the agent receiver, alert helper, Apache, automation helpers, inventory, and site statistics. Monitoring these components prevents a silent failure in the monitoring platform from being mistaken for a quiet infrastructure.
Choose the right Checkmk data source
The setup sequence is conceptually the same for every environment—create or automate hosts, configure a data source, discover services, and activate the configuration—but the data source depends on what you are monitoring.
| Target | Typical data source | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Linux server | Checkmk agent | Install the distribution-appropriate RPM or DEB package, then register and test the Agent Controller when secure registration is used. |
| Windows server | Checkmk agent | Install the Windows agent, establish the controller relationship if applicable, and verify that the Checkmk site can retrieve the data. |
| Network device or appliance | SNMP | Use the device’s supported SNMP configuration and discover interfaces, sensors, and other exposed services. |
| Cloud service | Documented vendor API integration | Provide the API permissions and connectivity required by the selected Checkmk integration rather than assuming a normal server agent can run there. |
| Container or virtual machine platform | Documented API integration or an agent on the guest, depending on the target | Decide whether you need guest health, platform health, or both, and ensure the selected integration can reach the platform. |
Use the Checkmk agent for ordinary Linux and Windows hosts. Do not force an agent-based design onto a device that only exposes SNMP or an API; the wrong data source produces incomplete discovery and misleading health signals.
Prerequisites and design decisions
- A working Checkmk site with permission to add hosts, configure services, and activate changes.
- Network reachability between the monitored server and the Checkmk components required by your design.
- The appropriate Checkmk agent or integration installed on the target.
- Firewall rules that match the chosen pull or push arrangement.
- A naming and grouping scheme that lets operators identify ownership, environment, and criticality.
For agent-based monitoring, distinguish the data collector from the transport layer. On Linux, the check_mk_agent script collects host data and requires root privileges. The Agent Controller handles registration and transport and runs as the restricted cmk-agent service account for transport. In pull mode, the controller listens on TCP port 6556; registered communication is protected with TLS.
During registration, the host Agent Controller establishes a trusted relationship with the Checkmk Agent Receiver. The server must be able to reach the Checkmk REST API and Agent Receiver required for registration, and the firewall must permit the selected design. Treat registration as a trust operation, not merely as opening a port.
Step 1: Add the server as a host
- In Checkmk, open Setup > Hosts > Hosts.
- Add the server as a host and enter the name and address information required by your environment.
- Place it in the host folder or grouping used by your operations team. Grouping makes it easier to apply consistent rules and build focused dashboards later.
- Save the host definition before attempting service discovery.
A host can represent a physical server, a virtual server, or another monitored object. Keep the host identity stable when the underlying machine is replaced; otherwise, historical state and notification context can become fragmented.

Step 2: Install the matching data source
Linux
Install the Checkmk agent package that matches the Linux distribution. Checkmk supplies Linux packages as RPM or DEB files depending on the distribution. The agent collects operating-system data, while the Agent Controller can provide registration and secure transport. Ensure the collector can read the information required by the checks you intend to use; the Linux agent script requires root privileges for collection.
Windows
Install the Checkmk agent on the Windows server and configure its connection according to the Checkmk site’s selected transport design. The important validation is not only that the software is installed, but that the Checkmk site can retrieve the agent output and that the returned sections contain the expected host data.
SNMP and API targets
For a network device or appliance, configure SNMP rather than installing a server agent. For cloud services, containers, and virtual machines where direct server access is unavailable, use the documented Checkmk integration for the relevant vendor or platform API. Configure credentials and permissions narrowly enough to collect the required data while keeping the integration operable.
Step 3: Register the Agent Controller and test the connection
Registration is needed when you use the Agent Controller’s trusted, authenticated transport. The controller registers with the Checkmk Agent Receiver, creating the trust relationship used for subsequent communication.
- Start registration from the Checkmk host and agent configuration flow appropriate to your site.
- Confirm that the monitored server can reach the Checkmk REST API and Agent Receiver used during registration.
- Approve or complete the trust exchange required by the site.
- Check firewall rules for the selected pull or push design. In pull mode, verify the path to TCP 6556 and ensure the controller is listening as expected.
- Use Checkmk’s connection test before running discovery.
Do not move directly to discovery after an unverified installation. A failed test usually indicates a reachability, registration, certificate, listener, or firewall problem; discovering services before correcting that issue only creates uncertainty about whether missing checks are genuinely absent.
Step 4: Run service discovery
- Open the host’s service-discovery action.
- Choose Save & run service discovery.
- Review the proposed services and the data returned by the agent or integration.
- Identify services that are new, changed, or no longer present.
Discovery can propose filesystems, processes, hardware sensors, CPU and RAM metrics, and other checks returned by the selected data source. The proposals are evidence of what Checkmk can currently see; they are not automatically the final alert policy.
On a first pass, accepting all relevant discovered services is a practical way to establish coverage. After the initial baseline, remove checks that do not represent a meaningful risk and use service rules to tailor thresholds, exclusions, or behavior. A service that disappears from discovery is shown as vanished and should be reviewed: it may have been intentionally removed, renamed, disabled, or lost because of a collection problem.

Step 5: Select checks that represent real risk
Use the server’s purpose and recovery objectives to decide what remains monitored. A database server, a batch worker, and a lightly used utility host do not have identical health criteria.
Availability checks
Keep the host reachability check for every server. It is the top-level signal that lets operators separate a machine outage from a failure of one service on an otherwise reachable host.
Filesystem and capacity checks
Monitor filesystems where exhaustion affects boot, logging, application writes, queues, or backups. Exclude mounts that are intentionally transient or irrelevant to operations, and set thresholds deliberately rather than inheriting a warning that is inappropriate for the workload. A capacity alert should arrive early enough for an operator to take corrective action, not only after writes fail.
CPU and RAM checks
CPU and RAM metrics are most useful when interpreted alongside workload and user impact. A short CPU spike may be harmless; sustained pressure, memory exhaustion, or swap-related degradation may not be. Keep the resource checks that support capacity planning or explain service failures, and avoid paging on every brief fluctuation.

Monitor processes and services that are required for the host’s function. A generic process list can be noisy if every transient worker is treated as critical. Prefer checks tied to a service-level objective, such as a required daemon, listener, or application component.
Hardware sensors
Keep hardware sensor and vendor-specific checks when the target exposes them and the team can act on the result. Temperature, fan, power, storage, and other sensor failures can be valuable early warnings on physical servers, but unavailable sensors should not be treated as evidence that a virtual machine is unhealthy.
Step 6: Activate the configuration
Discovery changes remain pending until the configuration is activated. Review the pending changes, confirm that the intended host and services are included, and apply the configuration so the monitoring core begins evaluating them.

Activation is a useful control point: it separates experimenting with discovery from putting checks into operation. If a service was accidentally accepted or a host was assigned to the wrong group, correct the pending configuration before activation rather than allowing an avoidable alert burst.

After activation, use the standard dashboards to inspect host and service status, problem timelines, notifications, and top alerters. Dashboards should answer different operational questions without requiring an operator to search every host.
- Incident view: Which hosts and services are currently not OK?
- Timeline view: When did a problem begin, and did it recover or recur?
- Notification view: Which alerts were sent, acknowledged, or suppressed?
- Capacity view: Which filesystems, CPU metrics, or RAM metrics are approaching a planned limit?
- Ownership view: Which team or application is responsible for the affected hosts?
Build custom dashboards for operations, application owners, or capacity reviews when the standard views do not match how your teams work. Group related services so that one incident is not represented as an unstructured list of dozens of alerts.

Discovery is a starting point, not a finished notification policy. The objective is actionable notification with a low false-positive volume.
Keep only actionable services
Ask what an operator would do when a check changes state. Keep checks that map to user impact, capacity, security, or a recovery objective. Disable irrelevant discoveries, especially on hosts where a generic check has no operational meaning.
Recommended Free Tools
Set thresholds deliberately
Use service rules to set warning and critical behavior in a way that matches the workload. A threshold should provide time to investigate or recover. Review whether the same value is suitable for development, staging, and production; apply different rules where the consequences differ.
Group related failures
Use host folders, service groups, and focused dashboards to show related components together. When a host is unreachable, downstream service alerts may be secondary symptoms. Organised views help the responder start with the likely cause rather than treating every red service as an independent incident.

Review newly discovered and vanished services
Infrastructure changes can add or remove services. Review new discoveries before they become permanent notification sources, and investigate vanished services so that an accidental collection failure is not mistaken for an intentional decommission.
Use notification state carefully
Notifications should reflect the states that require human action. If a team cannot respond to a check, either route it to the team that can or change the check’s role. Suppressing symptoms without understanding the dependency can hide a real outage.

The host remains PEND
- Confirm that the host definition was saved and the configuration was activated.
- Run the agent or integration connection test again.
- Check that the selected data source matches the target type.
- Inspect reachability, firewall rules, registration status, and the Agent Receiver path.
The host is DOWN or UNREACH
- Determine whether the server is actually unavailable or whether an upstream route or device is blocking access.
- For an agent pull design, verify the controller listener and the path to TCP 6556.
- For a registered connection, verify the trust relationship and encrypted transport rather than opening an unauthenticated path as a workaround.
Discovery returns no services or fewer services than expected
- Confirm that the agent package or integration is installed on the intended host.
- Check whether the agent can collect the relevant data with its required privileges; on Linux, the
check_mk_agentscript requires root privileges. - Review the returned agent sections and integration permissions.
- Check for a firewall or API connectivity problem between the target and Checkmk.
Checks are noisy
- Identify whether the service is actually tied to user impact, capacity, security, or recovery.
- Adjust service rules and thresholds to the workload rather than disabling all notifications.
- Group related checks and review whether a host-level failure is generating secondary service symptoms.
A previously monitored service is vanished
Review the change before removing the vanished state. The service may have been renamed or intentionally retired, but it may also indicate a disabled process, changed mount, missing permission, failed agent section, or broken integration. Correct the collection problem or update the service definition, then activate the resulting configuration.
Secure and maintain the monitoring path
Protect the monitoring path as part of server health. The Agent Controller’s trusted relationship with the Agent Receiver supports authenticated, encrypted communication. Keep the controller running under its restricted cmk-agent service account for transport, and reserve the root privilege required by the Linux collection script for collection itself.
Document which side initiates connections, which firewall rules permit them, how registration is approved, and which teams own the Checkmk site and monitored hosts. Re-test after network segmentation, server replacement, certificate or trust changes, and upgrades to the agent or integration.
Use the monitoring system’s own checks to detect failures in the agent receiver, alert helper, Apache, automation helpers, inventory, and site statistics. A dashboard that shows no problems is not reassuring if the receiver or notification path is itself unhealthy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsScale the pattern across an environment
Once one server is working, standardise the repeatable parts without copying irrelevant checks everywhere.
- Define host folders or groups by environment, ownership, platform, or criticality.
- Apply common service rules to groups of similar hosts.
- Keep host-specific exceptions explicit and documented.
- Use the same connection-test and discovery sequence for every new host.
- Review accepted, disabled, new, and vanished services after infrastructure changes.
- Build dashboards that serve operators, application owners, and capacity reviewers separately when their questions differ.
For cloud, container, virtual-machine, and network environments, preserve the same lifecycle: create or automate the host object, configure the supported data source, verify access, discover, select useful checks, activate, and then tune notifications. The interface and credentials vary, but the operational discipline does not.
A practical operating checklist
- Host exists under Setup > Hosts > Hosts with the correct identity and grouping.
- Correct agent, SNMP configuration, or API integration is installed and reachable.
- Agent Controller registration is complete where trusted transport is used.
- Connection test succeeds before discovery.
- Discovery has been reviewed for useful, irrelevant, new, and vanished services.
- Filesystem, CPU, RAM, process, service, and hardware checks match the server’s actual risks.
- Pending changes have been reviewed and activated.
- Dashboards show current problems, timelines, notifications, and ownership clearly.
- Thresholds and notification rules produce alerts that a team can act on.
- Checkmk’s own receiver, helpers, inventory, and site statistics are monitored.
How to judge whether the setup is successful
A successful Checkmk deployment is not the one with the largest number of green services. It is the one that reliably detects loss of availability, meaningful service failures, capacity risks, workload problems, and relevant hardware faults; gives responders enough context to act; and remains trustworthy when the monitoring system itself is under strain. Start with broad discovery, then make the accepted checks and alert rules reflect the server’s actual purpose.
