To monitor a retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) application in production, trace each request through retrieval and generation, capture usage and cost for model operations, and evaluate answer quality alongside latency and errors. Use dashboards and alerts to find changes, then inspect traces to understand them. Treat observability costs as operational estimates—not as a substitute for provider billing.

How do I monitor a RAG application in production?

Monitor the path that produced an answer, not only the final text. A useful trace connects a user request to the retrieval and generation steps that contributed to the response. That lets a team investigate whether a change came from retrieval, a model operation, or another part of the pipeline. LangChain describes end-to-end execution traces and visibility into RAG pipelines in its LangSmith product overview.

Instrument the request path using a method supported by your deployed libraries and chosen platform. Langfuse documents capture through native SDKs, framework integrations, OpenTelemetry, or an LLM gateway; LangChain describes OpenTelemetry integration. These are available approaches, not a single required trace schema.

Connect traces to operational signals

Capture enough context to identify the model and operation and to associate a slow, expensive, or unsatisfactory answer with its contributing steps. Combine trace inspection with aggregate signals such as latency, errors, evaluation results, and feedback. LangSmith describes these monitoring and evaluation capabilities on its product page; Langfuse documents workflows for comparing latency, cost, and evaluation metrics across prompt versions in its documentation. Vendor descriptions establish product capabilities, not proof that using a feature improves answer quality.

What should I log in a RAG pipeline?

Record information that helps explain system behavior and spend, while following your privacy and data-handling requirements. A practical starting point is:

  • Request and pipeline context: a way to connect the request with the retrieval and generation operations that produced the answer.
  • Operation and model identity: enough detail to determine which model and type of operation ran.
  • Usage and cost: provider-returned usage and cost when available, or the usage needed to calculate cost reliably.
  • Useful dimensions: application or feature, user or tenant where appropriate, and tags that support investigation.
  • Quality and performance signals: latency, errors, evaluations, and feedback when available in your instrumentation.

The precise fields depend on the libraries, instrumentation standard, privacy policy, and platform in use. Avoid collecting sensitive content or identifiers unless there is a justified operational need and an appropriate handling policy.

How do I track LLM costs per request?

Capture usage and cost for both generation and embedding operations. If a provider returns usage and cost, ingest those values where your telemetry setup supports it. If the observability platform calculates cost instead, the result depends on having the correct model identifier, usage units, model prices, and applicable pricing tiers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Langfuse documents both ingested values and inferred values based on recorded usage and model definitions. When ingested and inferred cost are both present, ingested cost takes priority. Its documentation also describes supplied model definitions and the ability to manage custom definitions: see token and cost tracking and model pricing.

Make request-level data useful to the team

Attach dimensions that answer real operating questions: which application or feature incurred the cost, which model ran, and—where appropriate—which user or tenant was involved. Langfuse documents filtering metrics by application type, user, or tags, along with dashboards and threshold alerts. Aggregates can reveal a change in a route or workload; the related traces help explain what happened. See its dashboard documentation.

Are LLM observability dashboard costs accurate?

They can be useful for tracking and estimating spend, but do not assume an observability estimate will match an invoice. In its article on Bedrock AgentCore and Langfuse, AWS says dashboard cost data is for estimation and advises verifying actual charges against official billing statements: monitor Amazon Bedrock AgentCore with Langfuse.
