The reliable way to improve air at home is a sequence, not a single gadget: identify likely sources, measure the pollutants relevant to your question, remove or reduce those sources, ventilate with clean outdoor air, and use filtration as a supplement. A low-cost monitor can reveal patterns in particles, ventilation and moisture, but it is not a complete safety certificate. Radon requires a dedicated test, and carbon monoxide requires certified CO alarms.

What indoor-air-quality monitoring can—and cannot—tell you

Indoor air quality (IAQ) describes the pollutants and conditions in the air inside a home. Common concerns include carbon monoxide (CO), smoke, radon, mold, particulate matter (PM), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), excess humidity and inadequate ventilation. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) lists these among common indoor pollutants in its Indoor Air Quality guidance.

EPA estimates that people spend about 90% of their time indoors; that figure appears on the agency’s 2025 indoor-air guidance page and is a general estimate, not a measurement of every household. Because conditions can change quickly while cooking, cleaning, renovating, burning fuel or during outdoor smoke events, trends are usually more useful than one isolated reading.

A monitor only detects what its sensors are designed to detect. A PM2.5 sensor cannot warn you about radon or CO; a VOC sensor does not identify every chemical; and a CO2 reading indicates ventilation conditions rather than overall safety. EPA’s low-cost monitor guidance also warns that placement near a source or draft can distort results.

Build a monitoring plan around specific questions

1. Inventory activities and potential sources

Before buying equipment, list what happens in each room and when. Note cooking, candles or fireplaces, gas or oil appliances, smoking or vaping, cleaning products, painting and other renovations, dust, pets, damp areas, visible mold, and outdoor smoke. Record whether bathroom and kitchen fans exhaust outdoors or merely recirculate air. This inventory tells you which measurements can answer a real question.

2. Select sensors for the pollutant or condition

Question Useful measurement or device What it does not establish
Are cooking, smoke or dust creating fine particles? PM2.5 monitor It does not measure radon, CO or every gas.
Is a room receiving enough outdoor-air exchange for its occupancy? CO2 monitor used as a ventilation indicator It cannot predict infection, quantify airborne virus or prove HVAC effectiveness.
Is the home too damp or at risk of condensation? Temperature and relative-humidity sensor It does not diagnose mold or identify a leak.
Could the home contain radon? Dedicated short-term or long-term radon test A general IAQ monitor is not a radon test.
Could a fuel-burning appliance produce a life-threatening gas? Certified carbon-monoxide alarm PM, VOC and CO2 monitors are not CO alarms.
Are chemical emissions changing after a product or renovation? VOC sensor, interpreted as a trend Low-cost VOC readings generally do not identify a specific compound or prove that air is safe.

Choose coverage based on the decision you need to make. If your concern is a fuel-burning appliance, start with a CO alarm and appliance inspection rather than a multipollutant display. If the concern is wildfire smoke or cooking, PM2.5 data can show whether source control and filtration change particle levels.

3. Place the monitor where people actually breathe

  • Use a representative occupied area, such as a bedroom or living room, rather than a shelf beside a suspected source.
  • Keep the sensor away from windows, doors, supply vents, return grilles, fans and direct drafts.
  • Do not place it directly beside a stove, fireplace, humidifier, air cleaner outlet, chemical storage or a bathroom exhaust fan.
  • Keep it at a normal breathing height and follow the manufacturer’s clearance and power instructions.
  • If you need room-to-room information, move one monitor on a planned schedule or use multiple identical units; do not compare readings from different sensor types as if they were calibrated together.

EPA’s low-cost monitor guidance explains why a draft or nearby source can produce a reading that is not representative of the room. Write down the location, occupancy and activities whenever you compare data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Establish a baseline and look for patterns

  1. Run the monitor in an occupied room under ordinary conditions for several days.
  2. Log cooking, showering, cleaning, opening windows, running exhaust fans, using an air cleaner and any unusual outdoor smoke.
  3. Compare the baseline with readings during and after one activity at a time.
  4. Repeat a change on another day. A repeatable rise and fall is more actionable than a single unexplained spike.
  5. Use the pattern to choose an intervention, then measure again to see whether the intervention changed the room.

Do not treat a low reading as proof that every pollutant is absent. A monitor that reports PM2.5 and CO2 may still be blind to radon, CO, specific VOCs or biological contaminants.

Use CO2 as a ventilation clue, not a safety score

CO2 rises when people exhale in a room and can therefore help show whether outdoor-air exchange changes with occupancy, closed windows or mechanical ventilation. It is a comparative indicator for a particular space, not a universal pass/fail limit for a home.

CDC and NIOSH state in their Ventilation FAQs that CO2 concentrations cannot predict who has a respiratory infection, quantify the amount of airborne virus produced by infected people, or prove that an HVAC system is effectively diluting and removing virus near its point of generation. Airflow directly over the sensor can also make a reading artificially low. Place the sensor away from supply vents and interpret changes alongside occupancy and ventilation actions.

Control pollution at the source first

EPA’s central advice is explicit: “The most effective ways to improve your indoor air are to reduce or remove the sources of pollutants and to ventilate with clean outdoor air.” The statement appears in the Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home. Filtration is useful, but it cannot compensate for a continuing source.

Combustion and smoke

  • Do not smoke or vape indoors.
  • Use a range hood and bathroom exhaust fan that discharge outdoors; run them during the activity and long enough afterward to clear residual pollutants.
  • Have fuel-burning appliances, chimneys and vents maintained according to the equipment and local safety requirements.
  • Never use a generator, grill or fuel-burning outdoor appliance inside a home, garage or other enclosed space.

Cooking and particles

Cooking can create short PM2.5 spikes even when the room looks clear. Cover pans when practical, use the outdoor-vented hood, and keep interior doors closed when that helps prevent particles from spreading to bedrooms. A monitor can confirm whether the hood and ventilation routine reduce the peak.

Products, dust and renovations

  • Select lower-emission paints, adhesives and cleaners when a suitable option is available.
  • Follow product ventilation and curing instructions; store chemicals closed and away from occupied rooms.
  • Use methods that capture dust rather than redistribute it, and clean settled dust regularly.
  • During sanding, painting or demolition, isolate the work area and keep occupants out until cleanup and ventilation are complete.

Dampness and mold

Repair plumbing leaks, roof leaks and condensation promptly. Dry wet materials and correct the moisture cause; an air cleaner cannot make a continuing leak or damp wall safe. A humidity sensor helps you find recurring moisture conditions, but it does not identify hidden mold or replace an assessment of water damage.

Ventilate when outdoor air is clean enough

Ventilation removes indoor pollutants by replacing indoor air with outdoor air. Use open windows or doors, outdoor-air intakes and mechanical ventilation when outdoor conditions are acceptable. Check that a fan actually exhausts outdoors rather than recirculating air.

Most forced-air heating and cooling systems do not mechanically bring in outdoor air, according to EPA’s Improving Indoor Air Quality guidance. A central system can still filter recirculated air, but its fan alone is not proof that fresh air is entering. If a home has a dedicated outdoor-air or balanced ventilation system, maintain it as specified and keep intakes clear.

Use particle filtration as a supplement

Portable air cleaners

EPA says portable air cleaners can reduce airborne particles, including PM2.5, but cannot remove all pollutants and do not replace source control or ventilation. For a room unit, compare:

  • Clean air delivery rate (CADR): choose a rating appropriate for the room’s size and use the manufacturer’s room-size method.
  • Operating noise: a quieter unit that runs continuously may clean more air over a day than a louder unit that is switched off.
  • Energy use: check power consumption at the speeds you expect to use.
  • Filter replacement: verify availability, interval and recurring cost before purchase.
  • Coverage limits: a unit in one closed bedroom will not clean the whole house evenly.

Place the cleaner so air can circulate around its intake and outlet. Run it during and after particle-generating activities, and replace an overloaded or damaged filter. Do not block the outlet or assume that a unit marketed for particles removes radon, CO or every VOC.

HVAC filters

A replacement filter can reduce particles moving through a forced-air system, but it must fit the documented dimensions and be compatible with the equipment. A filter that is too restrictive for the blower can reduce airflow or stress the system. Confirm the correct size and specification in the equipment documentation or with a qualified technician, then replace it on the schedule appropriate to dust loading and system use.

Test specifically for radon

Radon is a radioactive gas that requires a dedicated radon test; a PM, VOC or CO2 monitor is not a substitute. EPA’s monitor guidance identifies 4 pCi/L as the action level for follow-up. CDC’s Reducing Radon Levels guidance reports EPA’s recommendation to use a qualified mitigation professional at or above 4 pCi/L.

Choose a test protocol

  • Short-term test: provides a result over a relatively brief period and can be useful for an initial check or when a decision is time-sensitive.
  • Long-term test: measures over a longer period and better represents average exposure when circumstances allow.

Follow the kit’s placement and closed-house instructions exactly, and use a laboratory or provider that supplies clear follow-up steps. If the result is at or above 4 pCi/L, contact a qualified mitigation professional. Natural ventilation may lower a reading temporarily, but CDC states that it is not radon mitigation and should not be treated as a permanent fix.

General IAQ sensors—including PM2.5, VOC and CO2 monitors—are not life-safety CO alarms. If a CO alarm sounds, move everyone to fresh air and call emergency services or the relevant local emergency number; do not re-enter until responders say it is safe. Have combustion equipment inspected after an alarm or suspected exposure.

EPA’s Protect Indoor Air Quality in Your Home guidance covers alarm and combustion-safety precautions.

Match the device to the decision

If you need to decide… Compare these specifications Common limitation
Which room has particle spikes? PM2.5 sensor behavior, logging, placement flexibility and power It does not cover gases, radon or CO.
Whether ventilation changes with occupancy CO2 trend logging, calibration information and airflow-resistant placement It is not an infection or HVAC-performance test.
Whether a portable cleaner suits a room CADR, stated room size, noise, energy use and replacement-filter cost It does not remove every pollutant.
Whether an HVAC filter will fit Exact dimensions, equipment compatibility and replacement availability Higher filtration is not automatically suitable for every system.
Whether radon needs action Short-term versus long-term protocol, laboratory processing and mitigation follow-up A general IAQ monitor cannot provide the result.
Whether combustion is safe Certified CO alarm coverage, power and maintenance requirements A phone app or multipollutant display is not a substitute.

For every product, ask two questions: “What does it measure or remove?” and “What does it not measure or remove?” That second answer prevents false reassurance.

A practical room-by-room routine

Kitchen

  1. Place a PM2.5 monitor in the adjacent occupied area, away from the hood outlet and stove.
  2. Record a baseline with no cooking.
  3. Cook a typical meal while using the outdoor-vented hood, then repeat without it only if safe and useful for comparison.
  4. Keep the hood routine that produces lower and shorter particle peaks; clean or service the hood if it performs poorly.

Bedrooms and living areas

  • Use a representative monitor location away from drafts and direct purifier airflow.
  • Track occupancy, window position and air-cleaner speed.
  • Keep bedroom doors and windows arranged intentionally during smoke events, when outdoor air should not be introduced.

Bathrooms and damp areas

  1. Check whether the exhaust fan vents outdoors.
  2. Run it during showers and long enough afterward to remove moisture.
  3. Use humidity trends to find recurring damp periods, then repair leaks, condensation or ventilation problems.

Rooms with fuel-burning appliances

  • Install and maintain CO alarms according to the alarm instructions and local requirements.
  • Keep appliance vents and chimneys clear.
  • Arrange qualified inspection after appliance changes, unusual odors, soot, backdrafting or an alarm.

How to troubleshoot confusing readings

The PM2.5 value jumps suddenly

Check whether someone cooked, burned a candle, opened a window during outdoor smoke, vacuumed, disturbed dust or moved the monitor near a draft. Restore representative placement, repeat the activity and compare the pattern. If the spike occurs without a plausible event, check the sensor’s cleaning, power and operating instructions before drawing a health conclusion.

CO2 appears low while the room feels stuffy

Inspect placement for airflow directly across the sensor, confirm occupancy and check whether the device is configured correctly. A low reading does not prove that all ventilation is effective or that other pollutants are absent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Readings stay high after running an air cleaner

Verify that the unit’s CADR is appropriate for the room, that the filter is installed and not overloaded, and that doors or windows are not continuously bringing in polluted air. Look for an ongoing source such as cooking, smoke, dust or dampness. Filtration cannot solve a source that remains active.

The monitor says “good,” but there is a CO concern

Ignore the general rating for life-safety decisions. Leave the area if a certified CO alarm sounds or anyone has symptoms consistent with exposure, and obtain emergency assistance and professional inspection.

Maintain the system and review it periodically

  • Check monitor placement whenever furniture, fans or appliances move.
  • Clean sensors and update firmware only as the manufacturer directs; document resets or calibration events.
  • Replace portable-cleaner and HVAC filters before they are visibly overloaded or damaged and according to their documented schedule.
  • Test CO and smoke alarms regularly, replace batteries as directed and replace expired alarms.
  • Repeat radon testing after major renovations, changes to the foundation or other conditions that could alter soil-gas entry.
  • Review your activity log after an intervention so you know whether the change reduced the pollutant pattern you were targeting.

Seek qualified help when a radon result reaches the action level, when a CO alarm activates, when symptoms coincide with a suspected exposure, when dampness or mold persists, or when combustion equipment may be malfunctioning. Monitoring is most useful when it leads to a specific, verifiable action—not when a dashboard simply supplies a reassuring color.
