For the most reliable picture of volcanic activity in Hawaiʻi, start with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Hawaiian Volcano Observatory’s (HVO) Kīlauea Volcano Updates page. Read the newest dated notice, then use HVO Observatory Messages, the USGS Volcano Notification Service, lava-flow maps, webcams and livestreams for additional context. If you are on Hawaiʻi Island, also enroll in the County of Hawaiʻi Civil Defense emergency-notification system. Check timestamps every time: an image or status can become outdated while conditions change rapidly.
Use this monitoring workflow first
A dependable routine separates official hazard information from visual context and from local emergency instructions. Follow these steps in order whenever you need to know what is happening now:
- Open HVO’s Kīlauea Volcano Updates page. Read the latest dated daily update and any linked status report. The page lists the current alert information and warns that conditions can change rapidly.
- Look for a newer Observatory Message. HVO uses these shorter messages to report significant changes between routine daily updates. They supplement, rather than replace, the more detailed Volcano Notification Service products.
- Check the notice narrative, not just a color or word. The text explains where activity is occurring, what hazards are known, what may change and which areas are closed.
- Use maps, webcams and livestreams to add context. Confirm the camera or map timestamp and location. A clear-looking image does not establish that an area is safe.
- Check local emergency notifications. For an emergency affecting Hawaiʻi Island, County of Hawaiʻi Civil Defense notices may contain local protective-action instructions that a volcano status page does not.
- Before traveling, check park information and closures. Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park visitor information reflects access restrictions and hazards relevant to visitors.
This sequence prevents a common mistake: treating a camera view, an old social-media post or a search-result snippet as a current safety decision.

How to check HVO status correctly
Read the latest dated update
Open the Kīlauea Volcano Updates page directly rather than relying on a search snippet. Find the publication date and time, then read the complete update. Note the volcano, the location of activity and the stated alert information. A page can remain online after conditions change, so the date is part of the information.
HVO’s current page may describe intrusive activity, an eruption episode, an elevated alert level or a quiet interval. Do not carry a status from one episode into another. The status shown on a page viewed in July or another earlier month is historical once a newer notice is posted.
Check for an Observatory Message
When something important happens between daily updates, HVO posts an Observatory Message. Check these messages after an earthquake swarm, a visible change on a webcam, a reported ash plume or any other event that could make a daily summary stale. HVO describes Observatory Messages as supplements to the more detailed products distributed through VNS.

Record the time and location
For your own notes, record the notice’s date, time, volcano and named area. “Activity at the summit” is not the same as “hazard everywhere on the island.” Location-specific wording matters for roads, trails, nearby communities and park access.
How to receive USGS volcano notices by email or text
The USGS Volcano Notification Service is the push-notification option. HVO’s February 2019 stay-informed guide describes VNS as a free service that sends automatic email or text notices. It says subscribers can select volcanoes and notification types. The interface may have changed since that guide was published, so use the current VNS registration and preference pages to confirm today’s choices.
- Open the current USGS Volcano Notification Service registration page.
- Create or confirm your contact details, choosing email, text or both if those options are offered.
- Select the volcanoes you want to follow. A person focused on Hawaiʻi may choose Kīlauea, Mauna Loa, Hualālai, Mauna Kea, Haleakalā or Kamaʻehuakanaloa (Lō‘ihi Seamount), depending on the available list.
- Select notification categories and frequencies that match your needs. Avoid selecting every category if a large volume of notices would cause you to ignore them.
- Complete any confirmation step sent to your email address or phone number.
- Keep the subscription as a supplement to checking HVO and county channels. A notification can point you to a notice; it does not replace reading the notice’s location, time and hazard details.
The 2019 HVO guide lists examples of VNS products: daily or weekly Kīlauea and Mauna Loa updates; monthly updates for Hualālai, Mauna Kea, Lōʻihi and Haleakalā; status reports during ongoing events; Volcano Activity Notices for significant events or alert-level changes; and Information Statements when needed. Treat that list as a description of the guide’s categories, not a guarantee that every label or frequency is unchanged in the present interface.

Understand the two USGS alert labels
USGS uses two related but different systems. The distinction is essential because one addresses hazards on the ground and the other addresses hazards in the air.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

The Volcano Alert Level communicates ground-based hazards. It helps describe concern about conditions such as lava, earthquakes, ground deformation, rockfalls or other hazards affecting land. It is not, by itself, an evacuation order or a complete description of impacts at every location.
Aviation Color Code
The Aviation Color Code communicates airborne hazards, especially volcanic ash and other material that could affect aircraft. It is intended for aviation decisions, not as a stand-alone instruction for residents to evacuate or shelter.
Read the narrative and timestamp
USGS and HVO notices provide the meaning behind the labels: where the activity is, what has been observed, what is uncertain and what is expected next. HVO’s April 2, 2026 Volcano Watch article discusses how the levels and codes were applied during and between Kīlauea’s episodic summit-eruption episodes. Because terminology and episode conditions can evolve, rely on the current notice’s explanation rather than interpreting a color from memory.
Use maps, webcams and livestreams without overreading them
Lava-flow maps
USGS lava-flow maps provide geographic context. HVO describes its map as displaying volcanoes, earthquakes, monitoring instruments and past lava flows. Use the map to identify the relation between a vent, a flow path, roads, communities and park boundaries. A past flow outline is not a forecast of where a future flow will go, and a map’s last update may predate a newer notice.
Webcams
Webcams can show whether a camera’s view is clear, obscured by weather, dark or pointed toward a visible glow. They cannot see behind terrain, inside a vent or across the entire hazard area. Read the camera’s timestamp and compare it with the latest HVO update. If the camera is offline, frozen or showing an old frame, do not treat it as evidence that activity has stopped.

Summit livestreams
Livestreams are useful for observation, but they are not a hazard assessment. Wind, cloud, darkness and changing exposure can hide activity. A livestream also cannot show gas concentrations, unstable ground or hazards outside its field of view. For safety decisions, the written notice and local emergency instructions take precedence.
Enroll in Hawaiʻi Island emergency notifications
HVO’s February 2019 stay-informed guide encourages residents and visitors to enroll in the County of Hawaiʻi Civil Defense Emergency Notification System. The county service is separate from USGS volcano notices and is intended for emergency situations on Hawaiʻi Island, including local protective-action information.
- Find the county’s current emergency-notification enrollment page.
- Enter the locations and contact methods requested by the county.
- Confirm the subscription if the county sends a verification message.
- Review the county’s current instructions for updating an address, changing contact details or opting out.
Because enrollment procedures can change, verify the current county instructions when you sign up. Visitors should use a contact method they can monitor during the trip and should still check official county notices if an emergency is developing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesKnow the hazards that updates may describe
A status page can discuss several hazards at once. Understanding the terms helps you act on the notice without assuming that a visible lava glow is the only risk.
- Volcanic gas and vog: Sulfur dioxide and other emissions can create vog downwind. Gas can remain locally hazardous even when no lava is visible at a vent. Wind direction and weather affect who is exposed.
- Tephra: Ash, pumice, scoria, Pele’s hair and reticulite can be carried by wind and fountaining. Particles can irritate skin, eyes and respiratory systems and may be blown around again after they settle.
- Lava: Lava destroys objects in its path and can remain hot after an episode appears to have ended. A cooled-looking surface may conceal heat or unstable crust.
- Earthquakes and ground cracks: Shallow magma movement can produce earthquakes, deformation and cracks. Cracks can widen or make roads, trails and edges unstable.
- Rockfalls and unstable terrain: Crater rims and steep ground can collapse without warning. Hazard may exist even when no eruption is visible.
These examples are not a substitute for the hazard controls in a current notice. HVO has warned that activity could occur in a different location after recent intrusions. The caldera rim around Halemaʻumaʻu has been described as extremely hazardous and closed in a July notice; always check the latest park and HVO information before approaching any area.
Plan a visit or trip around official access information
Do not use a webcam or a map to justify entering a closed area. Before driving to a viewing location, check Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park visitor information and current county notices. Confirm whether roads, trails, overlooks or facilities are open, and read any restrictions associated with gas, ash, rockfall or unstable ground.

Conditions can vary within a short distance. A summit image does not describe air quality downwind, a crack outside the camera’s view or a road closure elsewhere on the island. If a notice directs people away from an area, follow that direction even if the camera appears quiet.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Follow volcanoes other than Kīlauea
HVO monitors multiple Hawaiian volcanoes. Its homepage lists Kīlauea and Mauna Loa as having very high threat potential, Hualālai as high, Haleakalā and Mauna Kea as moderate, and Kamaʻehuakanaloa (Lō‘ihi Seamount) as not ranked. These are long-term threat-potential categories, not a live eruption forecast and not a replacement for the current activity status.
Use VNS preferences to select additional volcanoes if you need them, then read the specific notice for each one. A routine monthly update for a quiet volcano and an event notice for an erupting volcano are different products with different urgency.
Fix common monitoring mistakes
You found an old status in a search result
Open HVO’s page and locate the newest dated update. Search engines can display text from an older notice, and cached snippets do not show whether an Observatory Message has since changed the situation.
The camera disagrees with a written notice
Check both timestamps and the camera location. The notice may describe activity outside the camera’s view, while weather or darkness may hide what the camera would otherwise show. Use the written HVO assessment for hazards.
You received a VNS message but do not know what to do
Open the linked notice and read the location, hazard description, uncertainty and recommended actions. VNS delivers information; County of Hawaiʻi Civil Defense and park authorities may issue local protective instructions.

You are seeing conflicting social-media posts
Use social posts only as a prompt to check HVO, USGS and county channels. Do not forward an unverified image or claim, especially when it has no location or timestamp.
You cannot receive a notification
Check that your VNS contact method was confirmed, that text messages are not blocked and that your email address is current. Then open the HVO website directly rather than waiting for a push message. For local emergencies, verify your County of Hawaiʻi Civil Defense enrollment separately; a USGS subscription does not automatically enroll you in the county system.
Build a practical checking schedule
For residents
Keep HVO’s Kīlauea Updates page and county emergency channel bookmarked. Check them during an active episode, after a felt earthquake or visible change, and whenever weather or wind could change exposure to gas or tephra. Enable VNS notices for the volcanoes and categories you can realistically follow.

Check HVO before leaving for the park, check county notifications while on Hawaiʻi Island and recheck park access information before entering. If you are traveling toward a viewing area, read the newest notice again rather than relying on the status you saw earlier in the day.
For family members monitoring remotely
Use the same official pages and record the notice time when you share an update. Include the volcano and location so relatives do not mistake a summit notice for an island-wide condition. If a local emergency is declared, rely on County of Hawaiʻi Civil Defense instructions for affected areas.
What to remember when conditions change
The safest interpretation is always time- and location-specific: identify the volcano, read the newest notice, understand whether the alert concerns ground or aviation hazards, and follow local instructions. Maps, cameras and livestreams help you understand what officials are describing, but they cannot replace a current assessment. Because volcanic activity, wind, visibility, closures and alert levels can change rapidly, recheck HVO and County of Hawaiʻi channels before you act.
