The most reliable way to see GPU temperature, clock speed, and utilization during a game is to start with the overlay made for your graphics card: NVIDIA App for GeForce, AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition for Radeon, or Intel Arc Control for Arc. Open the utility, enable its in-game performance or telemetry overlay, and select the three metrics. If the vendor overlay does not provide the view or customization you need, use a cross-vendor on-screen display such as MSI Afterburner or NVIDIA FrameView.
Overlay features vary with the GPU model, driver, utility release, game, and display mode. Treat the readings as a set: temperature shows heat, utilization shows how busy the processor is, and clock speed shows the performance state it is actually reaching. A single number without the card model and its documented limits is not enough to diagnose a fault.
Choose the monitoring overlay that matches your GPU

Use the matching vendor utility first. It normally understands that GPU family, requires fewer moving parts, and avoids installing a second program merely to read three values. A third-party overlay is useful when you need a different layout, broader hardware support, or capture features.
NVIDIA GeForce: use the NVIDIA App overlay
What is supported
NVIDIA says the NVIDIA App in-game performance and latency overlay supports desktop and laptop GeForce RTX cards and GeForce GTX 600 Series and newer. Its documented performance readings include frame rate, clock speeds, GPU temperatures, and additional metrics. Availability still depends on the installed driver, app release, game, and display configuration.

Enable the performance metrics
- Install or update the NVIDIA App and the graphics driver for the GeForce system.
- Open the NVIDIA App before starting the game.
- Open the app’s in-game overlay and enable its performance statistics or metrics feature.
- Select the temperature and clock readings, and add GPU utilization if it is offered in your version.
- Launch the game and verify that the overlay appears in the intended corner or position. If the app presents placement or appearance controls, adjust them there rather than changing game files.
The official NVIDIA support description establishes the overlay and supported GeForce generations but does not provide a single, permanent sequence of menu labels. NVIDIA changes the App interface, so use the labels shown in your installed release instead of following an old screenshot or assuming a control has the same name.
What to do if a metric is missing
Check the metric list in the overlay, then confirm that the driver and NVIDIA App are current for the GPU. A missing utilization, temperature, or clock field can reflect the card generation, software release, or the way the game is running rather than a defective sensor. If the overlay itself does not appear, confirm that the in-game overlay is enabled and try a display mode supported by the current App release.
AMD Radeon: Adrenalin’s overlay and logging
Install the complete software package
AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition requires compatible Radeon graphics and the full installation of the software for its performance overlay. A minimal driver-only installation or an unsupported configuration may omit the controls or individual sensors. - Install the full AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition package appropriate for the Radeon card.
- Open AMD Software and locate the performance-metrics or overlay settings in the installed interface.
- Enable the on-screen display and select GPU utilization, GPU clock speed, and GPU current temperature.
- Add GPU junction temperature when you need the hottest reported point on the package, plus fan speed, memory use, memory clock, or frame-rate fields as appropriate.
- Start the game and use the default overlay hotkey,
Ctrl+Shift+O, to show or hide the metrics.
AMD documents controls for overlay placement and appearance. The hotkey is configurable, so check the assigned shortcut if the default does nothing.

Record a trend with AMD logging
A live number tells you what is happening now; a log shows whether temperature or clock speed changes during a long session. AMD documents a separate logging shortcut, Ctrl+Shift+L, and allows the sampling interval to be adjusted from 0.25 to 5 seconds.
- Open the same performance-metrics settings and choose the fields you want recorded.
- Set a sampling interval. A shorter interval captures rapid changes but creates more data; a longer interval is easier to inspect for broad trends.
- Start logging with
Ctrl+Shift+Lbefore reproducing the problem or beginning a representative play session. - Stop logging with the assigned shortcut after the session, then inspect the recorded values alongside the game event you are investigating.
Do not assume every Radeon model exposes every field. If current temperature, junction temperature, utilization, or clock speed is absent, review the selectable metrics and confirm compatibility and full software installation before treating the absence as a hardware problem.
Intel Arc: enable telemetry in Arc Control
Open Arc Control and select fields
- Press
Alt+ito open Intel Arc Control. - Open the performance or telemetry overlay controls.
- Enable the telemetry overlay and select the metrics offered by your installed version.
- Start the game and confirm that the overlay is visible.
Intel’s support article, How to Enable, Disable, or Customize the Performance Metrics Using Intel Arc Control, confirms the Alt+i shortcut and metric selection. The retrieved documentation does not list a universal set of fields or promise that every Arc model and Arc Control release exposes temperature, clock, and utilization simultaneously. Check the actual selectable list on the system you are monitoring.
If Arc telemetry does not appear
Verify that Arc Control is installed and that its assigned shortcut has not been changed. Reopen the telemetry settings and check whether the desired field is available. If the overlay fails only in one game or display mode, test a mode supported by the current Arc Control release; there is no universal fix that applies to every game, anti-cheat system, or capture setup.

Cross-vendor option: configure MSI Afterburner
When it makes sense
MSI Afterburner is a third-party on-screen display rather than a requirement for normal monitoring. It can be useful when you want one layout across different GPU vendors or more control over which sensors are shown. MSI’s guide describes obtaining the utility from MSI’s official site or Guru3D and configuring its monitoring panel.
Set up the on-screen display
- Install MSI Afterburner from a reputable source and open the application.
- Open Settings > Monitoring.
- Select each sensor you want to watch, such as GPU usage, GPU core clock, GPU temperature, power, memory usage, and memory clock.
- For every selected sensor, enable the option to show it in the on-screen display.
- Apply the settings, start the game, and use Afterburner’s configured OSD toggle if you need to hide or show the panel.
Afterburner also contains tuning controls for clocks and fans. Monitoring does not require changing those controls; leave tuning untouched unless you have a separate, documented reason and a recovery plan.
NVIDIA FrameView for broader metrics and capture
NVIDIA FrameView is another cross-vendor choice. The FrameView 1.7 User Guide documents an overlay and performance capture for supported single-GPU configurations using GeForce, AMD, or Intel graphics. Its listed measurements include CPU and GPU clock, utilization, and temperature. Guides for different releases also mention metrics such as FPS percentiles, latency, and power, so check the current guide for the exact fields and setup for your version.

Configure an overlay that is useful, not distracting
Start with the three requested signals
- GPU temperature: shows the current reported temperature sensor. AMD may expose both current and junction temperature.
- GPU clock speed: shows the operating clock at that moment, which can move up and down with load, power, temperature, and the game’s workload.
- GPU utilization: shows how busy the graphics processor is. A low value can be normal when a game is limited by the CPU, frame-rate cap, menu, loading screen, or another subsystem.
Add fan speed, power, memory use, memory clock, frame rate, or frame-time information only when it answers a specific question. A compact overlay is easier to read during play and makes it less likely that an important value is hidden by a crowded panel.
Pick a repeatable test scene
For troubleshooting, monitor the same demanding level, match, replay, or benchmark-like route for several minutes. Note the game settings, resolution, frame-rate limit, and display mode. Compare sessions under similar conditions; a menu or a quiet indoor scene will not represent the load from a busy outdoor area.
Read the values together
- High utilization with a sustained high clock: the GPU is likely doing substantial rendering work. Temperature must still be compared with the card manufacturer’s documented operating guidance.
- High utilization with a lower clock than expected: investigate workload, power, temperature, driver behavior, and any frame-rate or power limit rather than blaming temperature alone.
- Low utilization and low clock: the game may be CPU-limited, capped, paused, in a menu, or waiting on another component.
- Temperature rising over a long session: use logging where available and check whether utilization, clock, fan speed, or room conditions changed at the same time.
- Junction temperature above current temperature: this is a difference between two sensor locations, not automatically evidence of a fault. Interpret both against the documented limits for the specific Radeon model.
These patterns are starting points for investigation, not universal pass-or-fail thresholds. Do not infer a fault from one reading without the exact GPU model and its published limits.
How to log and document a problem
Use AMD’s built-in log when you have a Radeon
AMD provides the clearest documented logging workflow in this group. Select the metrics, choose a 0.25-to-5-second interval, start logging with Ctrl+Shift+L, reproduce the issue, and stop the log afterward. Record the time of a stutter, crash, fan change, or visible performance drop so you can locate the corresponding samples.

Use capture tools when you need reports
FrameView is designed for performance capture and reporting, while an overlay such as NVIDIA App, Arc Control, or Afterburner is aimed at live observation. Confirm the current FrameView guide for supported metrics and the exact capture procedure before comparing results between releases.
Keep the test conditions with the data
- GPU model and driver version.
- Monitoring utility and version.
- Game title, graphics API if known, resolution, quality preset, and frame-rate cap.
- Display mode and whether another overlay or capture program was active.
- Room or ambient conditions when temperature trends matter.
- Time-stamped symptoms and the corresponding temperature, clock, utilization, fan, and power readings.
This context prevents a log from being mistaken for a universal benchmark. A value measured on one card, driver, game, and workload cannot establish a limit for every system.
Troubleshoot an overlay that is missing or incomplete
The hotkey does nothing
- Confirm that the overlay or telemetry feature is enabled in the utility.
- Check the assigned shortcut. AMD defaults to
Ctrl+Shift+Ofor its overlay and allows hotkey changes; Intel Arc Control opens withAlt+iunless it has been reassigned. - Close applications that may claim the same shortcut, then test again.
- Try the game’s supported display modes and restart the game after changing overlay settings.
The overlay appears but one metric is absent
- Open the metric-selection list rather than assuming the field is enabled.
- Confirm that the GPU model and driver are supported by the utility.
- For Radeon, verify the full Adrenalin installation and check whether the sensor is listed for that configuration.
- For Arc, use the fields actually offered by the installed Arc Control version; Intel’s documentation does not guarantee a fixed list for every model.
- For GeForce, update or repair the NVIDIA App and driver if the documented performance overlay is unavailable.
The overlay is hidden in a particular game
Test a supported display mode and verify the utility’s current game compatibility. The available documentation does not establish one universal solution for all games, anti-cheat systems, capture configurations, or exclusive-full-screen implementations. If another overlay or recording program is active, disable it temporarily to identify an interaction, then re-enable tools one at a time.

Check that you are viewing GPU values rather than CPU values, that the selected GPU is the one rendering the game, and that units and labels have not been confused. Compare the live overlay with a short log or a second utility only as a cross-check; different sensors can report different locations or sampling moments. Use the exact card model’s documentation for operating limits.

For most gamers, install or enable the matching vendor overlay, select GPU temperature, clock, and utilization, then validate it in a representative game scene. Add logging or a cross-vendor utility only when the basic overlay cannot answer the question you are investigating.
