Monitor bot traffic and website changes with three separate signals: request analytics show who is reaching your site, search indexing reports show whether Google can find pages, and scheduled screenshots show what visitors actually see. None replaces the others. Combine them, establish a baseline, and review alerts before changing access rules.
What each monitoring signal can tell you

Use request analytics to investigate traffic patterns, Search Console to investigate Google indexing, and screenshots to inspect the rendered result. A screenshot change is evidence of a changed page state, not proof of a bot incident.
Establish a baseline before changing bot rules
List the pages and endpoints that matter: for example, the home page, pricing or sign-in pages, and important public API routes. Note expected crawlers and ordinary traffic patterns, then review existing analytics before enabling mitigation. - Record the URLs or route groups whose traffic you want to understand.
- Identify expected crawler activity and any known scheduled jobs or integrations.
- Keep a record of current access rules and recent site releases so later changes have context.
- Choose a small set of high-value pages for screenshot checks rather than monitoring every URL indiscriminately.
Inspect automated traffic in Cloudflare
Cloudflare Bot Analytics is a provider-specific view for examining traffic classifications, detection sources, and request attributes or paths. Its availability and time windows depend on the Cloudflare plan and Bot Management configuration. According to Cloudflare’s documentation updated August 3, 2026, Business and Enterprise customers without Bot Management can use Bot Analytics; Enterprise Bot Management customers have additional views.

- Cloudflare says adaptive bitrate sampling means most customers see a 1–10% sample, depending on the view. Treat displayed volumes as sampled data where applicable.
These are Cloudflare’s documented limits, not universal analytics rules; check the current Bot Analytics documentation for the plan and dashboard you use.
Interpret classifications as signals, not ground truth
Cloudflare’s own guidance describes score 1 as automated, scores 2–29 as likely automated, and scores 30–99 as likely human. These bands belong to Cloudflare’s classification system. Its guidance also says verified bots include confirmed legitimate crawlers and services, and advises against challenging or blocking traffic classified as likely human. Separate visibility from enforcement
Cloudflare Business Insights is an observability surface, not a control panel for blocking traffic. Its documentation, updated September 16, 2026, describes selected periods of 24 hours, 7 days, or 30 days and availability to Enterprise Bot Management customers. Cloudflare AI Crawl Control documents visibility into AI services accessing a site, crawler access management, and robots.txt compliance tracking. The documentation updated August 14, 2026, says the feature is available on all plans; verify current availability and controls in Cloudflare’s AI Crawl Control overview. This is useful for questions about AI crawler behavior, but it does not replace general request analytics or a page rendering check.

Google’s indexing status
Use Google Search Console’s Page indexing report to investigate pages Google can find and reported indexing issues. If an important URL disappears or fails to index, investigate the reported reason and whether a site protection system could be blocking Googlebot. Set up scheduled screenshot change checks
Choose checks that answer a concrete question: did the page layout change, did key text disappear, or did a selected component change? Its help article does not establish one ideal interval for every page, so set a schedule based on how often the page normally changes and how quickly you need to notice a problem. - Select the target. Choose a stable, high-value URL or a specific element such as a status message, price block, or sign-in form.
- Capture an initial state. Confirm the page loads as expected and that the monitored region is the one you intend to track.
- Choose a suitable cadence. Match check frequency to the page’s normal update rate and the urgency of detecting changes. Frequent changes to rotating or personalized content can create noise.
- Enable useful comparisons and alerts. Prefer alerts that show the changed area and provide before-and-after views. Decide who should receive alerts and how they will be triaged.
- Review the first alerts. Tune the selected region or monitoring settings if routine timestamps, promotions, or other dynamic elements produce irrelevant notifications.

Make comparisons less noisy
- Use a consistent viewport, browser, and page state for each capture.
- Monitor a stable element when changing banners or personalized recommendations dominate the full page.
- Wait for the content you care about rather than relying only on a fixed short delay; asynchronous images and scripts may finish at different times.
- Keep screenshots from deployments or known content updates as context for reviewing a later difference.

Triage alerts before taking action
When a bot dashboard or screenshot monitor raises an alert, determine which signal changed and whether the timing matches a release or expected update. A visual difference may be a legitimate content change; unusual requests may not have affected the rendered page; an indexing issue may reflect crawling or protection rules rather than a layout defect.
- Check the alert timestamp against deployments, content edits, and scheduled jobs.
- Inspect the screenshot comparison and confirm the target URL or element is correct.
- Review request paths and classifications in the provider’s analytics, accounting for sampling and the provider’s own classification limits.
- Check Search Console when Google indexing is the concern, and review protection rules if Googlebot may be blocked.
- Only then adjust a rule, monitor target, or alert threshold, and observe the result.
Monitor both sites during a migration
For a domain or URL move, keep an eye on user and crawler traffic on both the old and new properties. Google Search Central recommends monitoring both during a site move. Pair that traffic review with indexing reports and screenshots of critical destination pages so you can distinguish access changes, indexing problems, and rendering regressions. Common problems and fixes
Bot analytics shows less traffic than expected
Check whether the view is sampled and confirm its plan-specific time window. Cloudflare documents 1–10% adaptive bitrate samples for most customers, depending on the view; the dashboard window also differs by Bot Management configuration. Avoid comparing a sampled view directly with an unsampled server log without accounting for that difference.
A screenshot alert fires repeatedly on an unchanged page
Dynamic content may be changing between checks, or the full-page target may include rotating elements. Narrow monitoring to a stable element, standardize the capture state, or adjust the schedule to fit the page’s update behavior.
A page capture times out or returns an error
Confirm that the URL is reachable from the machine running the script, increase the navigation timeout for a slow page, and inspect whether the site requires authentication or additional browser state. Distinguish a failed load from a valid screenshot; do not treat an empty or partial capture as proof that the page changed.

Review the Page indexing report and investigate access restrictions, including security protections that may block Googlebot. A successful manual visit does not establish that Google can crawl the URL.
A bot score suggests legitimate traffic is automated
Scores are provider classifications, not certainty. Check whether the traffic matches a verified crawler or expected integration and review the affected routes before challenging or blocking it.
