To monitor AI agent access to your website, collect structured request logs at the web server or edge, then correlate them with identity, authorization, and action records wherever you control the agent or application. Treat user-agent strings, IP addresses, fingerprints, and robots.txt behavior as clues—not proof of who made a request. A website can usually establish what reached its boundary and how it responded; it may not be able to verify the identity or internal actions of an outside agent.
What website monitoring can—and cannot—establish
Monitoring has three distinct evidence layers. Keeping them separate prevents a plausible-looking bot label from being mistaken for verified identity.
- Direct observation: Your server or edge can record that a request arrived, when it arrived, which route it targeted, what client signals were available, and what response or edge decision followed.
- Correlated identity and authorization: If you operate the agent, API, or connected application, internal records can link activity to an agent identity, a human or system principal, a session or task, an authorization decision, and an action result.
- Inference: A user-agent string, network fingerprint, IP range, request pattern, or robots.txt behavior may suggest automation or an AI-related client. None of these signals alone proves that the client is an AI agent, who operates it, or what it did after receiving a response.
That distinction matters whether your site serves public pages, authenticated content, or APIs. A request log can show that a route was accessed even when the client’s real-world identity is unknown. Conversely, a recognizable crawler label does not prove that the request was genuine or that the client followed your stated crawler preferences.

| Evidence plane | What it can establish | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Website or edge request logging | Requests observed at the site boundary, routes, response outcomes, and available client or network signals. OWASP’s Bot Management and Anti-Automation Cheat Sheet recommends structured records for these observations. | Useful for visitors generally, but client identity is often uncertain; raw logs also require privacy and access controls. |
| Agent or application audit events | For systems you operate, these records can establish an agent identity, principal, tool calls, authorization and approval decisions, and action outcomes. OWASP’s AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet and NIST identity guidance address this layer. | Provides stronger attribution for controlled agents, but an external agent may not expose its internal records to the website it visits. |
Decide which systems are in scope before choosing monitoring coverage. A public website may have only edge and application logs. An organization that runs its own agent can instrument both the website boundary and the agent’s execution path. Compare implementations by attribution quality, coverage across those layers, integration with existing logs, alerting needs, retention and privacy requirements, and ability to enforce policy. No single score or product category resolves all of those trade-offs.
Build a useful website request record
For sensitive endpoints, OWASP’s bot-management guidance recommends recording a structured set of request and decision fields. Capture what your infrastructure actually provides; do not treat unavailable fingerprints or location data as mandatory prerequisites.
- Request and outcome: timestamp, request ID, route, and status code.
- Available client and network signals: client IP, ASN, and country where available and appropriate to retain; TLS and HTTP/2 fingerprints where your infrastructure provides them.
- Claimed client identity: the raw user-agent string and a parsed family and version, if parsing is available. Preserve the raw value so investigators can distinguish what the client sent from how your parser classified it.
- Site identity context: authenticated identity or a hashed session ID, where applicable.
- Detection record: the decision made at the edge or application layer and the signals or rule that produced it.
Use a request or trace identifier that can also appear in application logs. A shared identifier makes it easier to connect the edge’s account of a request to the application’s account of what happened next. Where a common identifier cannot be propagated, document the available correlation fields and their limitations rather than implying a reliable match.

Record identity and actions for agents you control
Request logs alone cannot explain why a controlled agent made a request or what it did with the result. Add structured events inside the agent-connected application. OWASP’s AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet states: “Log all agent decisions, tool calls, and outcomes.” Its guidance also identifies useful high-risk action metadata.
- Distinct agent identifier and the human or system principal operating it.
- Session, task, or other execution context, plus the requested resource.
- Tool or API invoked and the resulting action.
- Authorization result and, when applicable, approval identifier.
- Action classification, execution result, and policy version used to make the decision.
Keep these events correlated with web requests using a shared request, trace, or session identifier when your architecture supports it. Record the authorization outcome, not just that a call was attempted. For a high-impact action, an audit entry should let an investigator distinguish a rejected request, an approved operation, and an attempted operation whose execution failed.
Do not assume a third-party assistant will provide its decision log or internal tool-call history to a site it visits. If an outside client fetches a public page, the site operator may have only the request evidence available at its own edge. An answer shown to a user is not a substitute for the site’s record of whether a request reached a resource.
Instrument monitoring step by step
- Inventory the routes and actions that matter. Separate public content, authenticated pages, APIs, and endpoints that change data or trigger consequential actions. Identify which systems generate the edge, application, and agent records for each route.
- Enable structured request logging at the boundary. For the endpoints in scope, record the request, outcome, available client signals, identity or session context, and detection decision described above. Check that route and status fields remain meaningful in your own log format.
- Add application and agent events where you control execution. Record the principal, agent, session or task, tool call, authorization and approval results, and execution outcome. Include the policy version and action classification for high-risk events.
- Connect the records. Propagate a request, trace, or session identifier across the edge and application boundary where possible. Test that an investigator can use it to locate related events without relying on a user-agent string as the join key.
- Build operational views and alerts around behavior. Track endpoint request rates, error rates, route failures, unusual tool invocation, excessive privilege, approval-bypass attempts, and abrupt changes in high-risk activity. Use your site’s baseline to decide what deserves review; avoid treating sample code thresholds or a single anomaly as universal limits.
- Test the audit path before relying on it. Generate a request and, for a controlled agent, a representative authorized and rejected action. Verify that the resulting records show the expected route, outcomes, identity context, decision, and correlation identifier. Check that sensitive values are masked and that access to raw logs is restricted.
- Define response ownership. Ensure responders can find the relevant route, identity or session, decision rule, and outcome, and know which team can change the policy or investigate the agent-side records.
These steps establish observability, not prevention. Monitoring is most useful when the systems receiving an agent’s requests also enforce the authorization rules that protect the data and actions behind them.

Protect the audit trail and the people in it
Logs can contain credentials, personal information, identifiers, and sensitive route details. OWASP’s bot-management guidance explicitly recommends masking credentials and personally identifiable information in bot-management logs. Apply that protection at collection or before broad access to the records, and restrict raw-log access to people and services that need it for operations or investigation.
- Mask credentials and personal information rather than storing them in readable form.
- Limit access to raw records and use hashed session identifiers where appropriate.
- Decide which network and location fields are appropriate to retain for your site and operating context.
- Ensure alerts expose enough context to investigate without unnecessarily copying sensitive raw data into broadly visible channels.
- Set retention and access practices to meet your organization’s privacy and security requirements; the cited guidance does not prescribe one universal retention period.
A log that is incomplete, broadly exposed, or impossible to correlate can create risk without providing a dependable audit trail. Treat the integrity and handling of the records as part of the monitoring design, not as an afterthought.
Use identity and authorization—not model judgment—as the control
For agents operated by your organization, create a distinct identity and entitlement model. NIST warns that sharing a person’s credentials with an agent creates accountability gaps; it recommends treating agents as distinct entities with identifiers, credentials, and entitlements tied to the operating user or system. That makes it possible to distinguish who or what initiated an action from the identity under which the agent is allowed to act.
Give an agent only the tools and permissions needed for its task. OWASP’s guidance on excessive agency recommends minimizing extensions and their functions, limiting downstream permissions, using the user’s context where applicable, and enforcing authorization in downstream systems instead of relying on the model to decide whether an action is allowed.

NIST identifies OAuth 2.0 and SPIFFE as examples of existing patterns relevant to enterprise agent identification and authorization. The appropriate choice depends on the architecture and threat model. Static keys and long-lived bearer tokens can be copied and used by whoever obtains them; where supported, use narrowly scoped, audience-restricted credentials with suitable lifetimes. Do not treat a token’s presence as proof that every requested operation should be authorized.
For destructive, financial, administrative, or externally visible actions, require an independent execution check and action-specific approval where the risk warrants it. OWASP recommends that the execution component validate approval; where required risk classification, approval validation, policy lookup, or audit logging fails, high-impact action handling should fail closed. This keeps a missed alert or an agent’s mistaken decision from becoming the only barrier to an unsafe operation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Investigate suspected AI-agent traffic proportionally
Use bot scores, user-agent strings, request rates, fingerprints, and robots.txt-related observations as signals to assess together against your site’s normal behavior. OWASP’s bot-management guidance describes graduated responses: log and flag suspicious traffic at low confidence, use challenges at medium confidence, and consider more restrictive interventions at higher confidence. Those are response patterns, not fixed thresholds. Tune them to your own traffic so ordinary visitors and legitimate crawlers are not blocked without supporting evidence.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor an investigation, start with the directly observed request: route, time, status, edge decision, and available signals. Then ask whether an authenticated identity or session can be correlated, whether an agent-side record exists, and whether the same behavior appears across related routes or actions. Keep a distinction between what the logs establish and what they merely suggest. Preserve the relevant records and the rule that triggered a response so the decision can be reviewed.

- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
Prefer reversible, proportionate actions where feasible. For agents with write access, least privilege, rate limits, and approval controls constrain potential damage while responders investigate. Monitoring helps detect and explain activity; it cannot substitute for authorization checks, resource limits, or controls that prevent an unapproved action from executing.
What robots.txt tells you—and what it does not
robots.txt communicates crawler preferences. It does not authenticate a client, enforce access restrictions, or provide a complete audit record. A client that follows the file is not thereby verified, and a client that does not request it cannot be identified from that fact alone.
A preprint by Gabriel Lopez-Fonseca, David Rodriguez, Stefan Bechtold, and Jose M. Del Alamo, dated July 16, 2026, reports a controlled study of ten widely used AI assistants with advertised web-search capabilities. Across 200 trials and four robots.txt configurations, the authors found varied behavior: some tested systems followed expected access patterns, while others accessed restricted resources without requesting robots.txt or used generic user-agent strings that complicated attribution. The authors used server-side logs and secret codes embedded in target pages to distinguish actual access from visible-answer correctness. These results describe that study’s tested assistants and conditions, not every AI agent or a universal rate of robots.txt compliance.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
The study also found that retrieval and answer correctness could diverge: an assistant might access content without surfacing it, or fail to access content it was permitted to retrieve. For a site owner trying to establish actual access, server-side or edge logs are therefore more direct evidence than attempting to infer access from a user-visible answer. The embedded markers were an experimental measurement technique, not a required production control.
Common monitoring mistakes to avoid
- Calling a user-agent string proof: it is client-provided text and should be recorded as a claim, then assessed alongside other evidence.
- Treating robots.txt as an access-control list: use actual authorization and server-side enforcement to protect restricted resources.
- Logging only at the edge: that shows observed requests and responses but not necessarily why a controlled agent acted or what downstream operation it performed.
- Logging only inside the agent: that leaves gaps about what reached the website boundary and how the edge responded.
- Granting agents broad or shared credentials: this weakens attribution and expands the damage possible from a compromised or misused agent.
- Alerting without a response path: a score or spike is less useful if responders cannot connect it to a route, decision, identity context, and outcome.
- Retaining sensitive raw data unnecessarily: mask credentials and personal information, restrict access, and make retention choices deliberately.
What the evidence does not quantify
The cited guidance offers implementation recommendations, and the 2026 preprint reports a bounded controlled study. They do not establish an authoritative universal percentage of website traffic that comes from AI agents. Nor do they provide a single threshold for bot detection that is appropriate across sites. Use your own telemetry to characterize changes, and qualify attribution according to the evidence available for each request.
