Use CloudWatch to monitor the EC2 machine and any guest or application telemetry you configure; use YouTube Live Control Room to confirm stream health at YouTube’s end. CloudWatch metrics alone cannot prove that YouTube is receiving an acceptable live video stream. For dependable monitoring, check both layers before and during the event.
What CloudWatch can—and cannot—tell you
Amazon EC2 publishes instance metrics to CloudWatch, including CPU utilization, network traffic and status checks. These help identify host problems, but they do not confirm that the video encoder is producing the right format or that YouTube is ingesting the stream successfully. CloudWatch observes guest operating-system metrics and logs only when you configure collection, for example with the CloudWatch agent. AWS’s EC2 monitoring documentation describes the available monitoring layers.
YouTube Live Control Room is the platform-side check: it shows stream health and status messages for the stream being sent to YouTube. Keep it open alongside CloudWatch during a test and live event. YouTube’s live metrics guidance explains where to inspect stream health.
Choose the right monitoring layer

Intervals describe how often metrics are reported; they are not a guarantee of stream quality or a measure of end-to-end delay. Set up CloudWatch monitoring for the EC2 sender
1. Review the instance metrics
- Open the AWS Management Console and go to EC2 > Instances.
- Select the instance that runs the encoder or stream-sending workload.
- Open the instance’s Monitoring tab to review the CloudWatch graphs available for it. Check CPU utilization, network traffic and status checks, then note the periods shown for each metric.
- Compare the graphs with the time of a representative test stream. A CPU or network change can point to host-side pressure, but neither one alone confirms successful YouTube ingestion.
Metric availability and presentation can vary with the instance and monitoring configuration. AWS identifies metrics such as CPUUtilization and NetworkIn as examples of default EC2 metrics in its monitoring overview.
2. Decide whether one-minute EC2 metrics are worth enabling
Basic monitoring is often enough to identify broad or sustained changes, but most of its default metrics arrive in five-minute periods. If your response needs a more frequent view, enable detailed monitoring for one-minute periods and account for the per-metric charge. Status-check metrics are available at one-minute periods under the documented basic-monitoring behavior, so enabling detailed monitoring is not required just to see those status checks.

For an existing instance, select it in EC2 > Instances, choose Actions > Monitor and troubleshoot > Manage detailed monitoring, and enable detailed monitoring. Console labels can change; consult AWS’s current enablement instructions if the path differs.

Memory use, filesystem use and process-level details are not included in the default EC2 metrics described by AWS. To collect these or relevant application logs, install and configure the CloudWatch agent inside the instance, select the metrics and log files deliberately, and provide the permissions required for that configuration. Confirm that the agent is running and that data is reaching CloudWatch before depending on it for alerts. AWS documents the agent in its overview and offers an EC2 console setup guide.

4. Create alarms for sustained conditions
In CloudWatch, create an alarm on a relevant metric, choose a threshold and evaluation periods, then configure an action such as an SNS notification. You can also configure other supported actions, including an EC2 Auto Scaling policy where appropriate. An alarm signals that a metric crossed a threshold for the periods you specified; it does not prove that the video is reaching YouTube.
Do not copy a CPU, memory, bitrate or network threshold without considering your encoder, instance type, resolution, frame rate and target latency. Run a representative stream, observe normal and stressed behavior, and alert on sustained conditions rather than brief fluctuations. AWS describes the threshold-and-period behavior and possible actions in its EC2 monitoring documentation.

Check YouTube’s stream health and encoder settings
Start a test stream and inspect the preview, stream health and status messages in Live Control Room. Verify that the stream is visible and accessible as intended, and check audio and video quality throughout the test. YouTube recommends pre-event testing and ongoing checks in its live streaming tips.
Confirm that the encoder sends H.264 video and AAC audio for proper ingestion. YouTube’s current encoder guidance provides recommended bitrates by codec, resolution and frame rate. For H.264, examples include 5 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps, 8 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps, 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are encoder recommendations, not a guarantee of quality; use the recommendation for your actual format in YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table.

If YouTube reports a stream-format problem, check the encoder’s selected video and audio codecs against YouTube’s live streaming error messages. YouTube also advises monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during the event in its encoder-settings guidance.
Monitor the stream during the event
- Use CloudWatch to spot EC2 status-check failures, unexpected CPU changes, or network patterns that differ from the test. Review agent metrics and logs only if you configured them.
- Use Live Control Room to inspect YouTube’s stream health, preview and status messages.
- Correlate alerts and platform messages by time. If CloudWatch looks normal but YouTube reports trouble, investigate the encoder, format, connection to YouTube or ingestion status. If YouTube looks healthy while CloudWatch reports a host issue, investigate the instance and sender workload.
- Do not treat either dashboard as complete end-to-end proof on its own: the two systems observe different parts of the delivery path.
Troubleshoot common monitoring and stream problems
