To monitor Amazon Bedrock Agents Runtime invocations, configure an AWS CloudTrail trail with an advanced data-event selector. Use resource type AWS::Bedrock::AgentAlias for InvokeAgent, or AWS::Bedrock::InlineAgent for InvokeInlineAgent, and set eventCategory to Data. These runtime events are not included when a trail records only management events, and CloudTrail charges separately for data-event logging.
Deliver the trail to an Amazon S3 bucket for an ongoing record. CloudTrail can show who made an invocation, when it occurred, and request-related details, but it is an audit source rather than a complete, ordered trace of an agent’s internal reasoning or every tool step.
Understand which kind of CloudTrail event you need
CloudTrail separates API activity into management events and data events. The distinction determines whether an existing trail will contain an agent invocation.
| Event category | What it covers | Default behavior | Use for Bedrock agent monitoring |
|---|---|---|---|
| Management | Control-plane operations such as creating, updating, or deleting AWS resources | CloudTrail trails commonly log these by default | Useful for changes to agent-related resources, but not sufficient for runtime invocation auditing |
| Data | Operations that access or use a resource at runtime | Not logged by default; you must opt in with a data-event selector | Required for InvokeAgent and InvokeInlineAgent |
An existing trail that was configured only for management events can therefore appear healthy while recording no Bedrock agent calls. Adding a data selector is the material configuration change.

Identify the API and endpoint before creating a selector
Amazon Bedrock exposes more than one invocation path. Selectors are tied to the resource type used by the API, so confirm which operation your application actually calls.
| Runtime operation | Resource type in the advanced selector | Event category | Typical reason to select it |
|---|---|---|---|
InvokeAgent |
AWS::Bedrock::AgentAlias |
Data |
Invocation of a deployed Bedrock agent alias |
InvokeInlineAgent |
AWS::Bedrock::InlineAgent |
Data |
Invocation of an inline agent definition |
The endpoint matters as well. AWS documents Bedrock runtime calls under the bedrock-runtime.{region}.amazonaws.com endpoint and documents Bedrock Mantle calls under bedrock-mantle.{region}.api.aws. Their CloudTrail guidance is separate. Verify the endpoint and API operation used by your client instead of assuming that a selector for Agents Runtime covers every Bedrock-related request. The Mantle-specific documentation is at Monitor bedrock-mantle API calls using CloudTrail.

This guide is limited to Amazon Bedrock Agents Runtime. Other AWS product families with “agent” in their names have their own event types and logging surfaces.
Configure a CloudTrail trail for InvokeAgent
The following procedure adds the data-event selector to a trail. You can create a new trail or edit an existing one.
- Choose the trail and destination. In the AWS CloudTrail console, open Trails and select Create trail or the trail you want to edit. A trail must deliver its events to an S3 bucket if you want an ongoing record that you can retain and analyze later. Use a bucket appropriate for your organization’s retention and access controls.
- Open the event configuration. In the trail settings, find Advanced event selectors. Do not rely on the management-event selector alone; the Bedrock invocation records are data events.
- Add a data selector for agent aliases. Add a selector whose fields include
eventCategoryequal toDataandresources.typeequal toAWS::Bedrock::AgentAlias. The equivalent pattern documented by AWS is: -
{"FieldSelectors":[{"Field":"eventCategory","Equals":["Data"]},{"Field":"resources.type","Equals":["AWS::Bedrock::AgentAlias"]}]} - Optionally narrow the events. Add an
eventNamefield withInvokeAgentif you want the selector to accept only that operation. You can also addresources.ARNand enter the ARN of a particular agent alias. Narrowing by operation or ARN reduces unrelated data events, but omitting those filters can be useful when you are initially discovering which aliases an application uses. - Save the trail. Confirm the selector and save the trail. If the trail is multi-Region or otherwise scoped, ensure that its scope includes the Region in which the invocation occurs.
- Generate a controlled invocation. Call the same
InvokeAgentoperation your application uses, then look in the trail’s S3 delivery location for the resulting CloudTrail record. This test validates the complete path: the API call, selector match, trail configuration, and S3 delivery.
The resource type is the important part of the selector. Choosing a generic Bedrock resource type, or leaving the selector at management events, will not capture the alias invocation data event.
Add coverage for InvokeInlineAgent
Inline agents use a different CloudTrail resource type. Add a separate advanced selector for the inline operation, using the same data-event category:

{"FieldSelectors":[{"Field":"eventCategory","Equals":["Data"]},{"Field":"resources.type","Equals":["AWS::Bedrock::InlineAgent"]}]}
If the application can call both APIs, configure coverage for both resource types in the trail’s advanced selectors. You may additionally constrain the inline selector with eventName equal to InvokeInlineAgent. Keep the two resource types conceptually distinct: an alias selector is not a substitute for an inline-agent selector.
Choose the right retention and viewing method
Use an S3-delivered trail for an ongoing record
A trail that delivers events to S3 gives you durable files that can be retained according to your audit, incident-response, or compliance policy. It also lets you retrieve records after the short-lived console viewing window has passed and supports your own search, parsing, and archival processes.
Do not use Event history as your only check
CloudTrail Event history is useful for reviewing recent management events, but it should not be treated as a complete viewer for Bedrock agent data events. If you search Event history and find no invocation, that absence does not prove that the call did not happen. Check the S3 output from a trail configured with the correct data selector.
Account for data-event charges
AWS charges for data-event logging in addition to the costs associated with ordinary CloudTrail use. A selector that covers many resources or Regions can create more billable events than a selector limited to the aliases and operations you actually need. Review current CloudTrail pricing and estimate event volume before enabling broad coverage, especially in high-throughput applications.
Recommended Free Tools
Use filters without hiding the evidence you need
Advanced selectors can be broad or narrow. Decide whether the goal is discovery, continuous auditing, or a tightly scoped control.
Start broad when the inventory is uncertain
If you do not yet know which aliases are used, select the Bedrock resource type and the Data category without an ARN restriction. Once test and production traffic are understood, you can add resources.ARN filters for specific aliases.
Use event-name filters for a focused audit
An eventName filter limits the selector to the invocation operation. For alias calls, use InvokeAgent; for inline calls, use InvokeInlineAgent. This is useful when the same resource type can produce other data events that are outside the monitoring question.

Be deliberate with ARN filters
An ARN filter is appropriate when a team owns a known set of aliases and wants an explicit allow-list of monitored resources. Copy the exact alias ARN from the AWS resource rather than constructing one manually. When aliases are created or replaced, update the selector or the new alias will not match the old ARN restriction.
What a Bedrock invocation event can establish
Once the selector is working, the CloudTrail record is an audit record for the public API request. Depending on the event fields present, it can help answer the following questions:
| Question | What the record can support | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Who made the request? | The requester’s CloudTrail identity information, such as the user, role, or service principal associated with the call | Interpret the identity in the context of your AWS authentication and role-assumption model |
| When did it occur? | The event timestamp recorded for the API request | Use the timestamp as the time associated with that CloudTrail event, not as a sequence of every action performed inside the agent |
| Which operation was called? | The API event name, such as InvokeAgent or InvokeInlineAgent |
The operation must match the selector and the endpoint used by the application |
| Which resource was addressed? | Resource information associated with the matched agent alias or inline agent event, where included | ARN filtering is a configuration choice; an unfiltered selector can cover more resources |
| What request context was supplied? | Other request and connection details that CloudTrail includes for that event | Do not assume every application-level prompt, response token, or tool result is represented |
These records are useful for access reviews, incident timelines, and proving that a principal made an invocation request. They do not by themselves prove what the model reasoned about, which internal steps it took, or whether a downstream tool completed successfully.
Understand the ordering and visibility limits
A CloudTrail log is not a guaranteed chronological transcript of an agent run. AWS explicitly describes CloudTrail log files as not being an ordered stack trace of public API calls; see Understanding CloudTrail events. Treat each event as an independently recorded audit item.
Consequently, CloudTrail alone cannot reliably reconstruct:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Every internal reasoning step or model decision.
- The exact order of all internal agent actions.
- Every tool invocation made behind an agent request.
- The complete prompt-and-response conversation or all intermediate state.
- Whether a downstream operation succeeded when that operation is not represented by a separately logged public API event.
For a full operational picture, pair the CloudTrail audit record with application-level request identifiers, agent or tool logs, and service-specific telemetry that your organization deliberately retains. Those additional sources are where you should investigate latency, intermediate decisions, tool inputs, and application outcomes; CloudTrail’s role is to establish the AWS API request and its security context.
Troubleshoot a missing invocation event
The trail contains management events but no agent calls
Check the trail’s advanced event selectors first. A management-event configuration does not automatically include data events. Add the selector with eventCategory set to Data and the resource type that matches the operation.

The selector uses the wrong resource type
Use AWS::Bedrock::AgentAlias for InvokeAgent and AWS::Bedrock::InlineAgent for InvokeInlineAgent. Switching only the event name while leaving the wrong resource type will still produce no match.
You are searching Event history
Look in the S3 location configured for the trail. Event history is not a substitute for a trail that has been configured to log Bedrock data events.
The application calls a different endpoint or operation
Inspect the client configuration and request path. The Bedrock runtime and Bedrock Mantle documentation describe distinct endpoint families and logging behavior. A selector designed for Agents Runtime will not automatically answer questions about an unrelated Mantle API.
An ARN restriction excludes the call
Temporarily remove the resources.ARN filter or compare it with the exact resource ARN used by the request. An alias replacement, a different Region, or an inline-agent call can make a previously correct ARN restriction stop matching.
The test call was never made after the change
After saving the trail, issue a controlled invocation through the same code path and then inspect the S3 delivery. Testing an unrelated Bedrock API does not validate an Agents Runtime selector.
The selector is broader than expected
Review eventName, resources.type, and resources.ARN together. Tighten the selector only after confirming that the narrower rule still captures the required aliases. Remember that every additional data event can affect CloudTrail charges.

For deployment and configuration governance
Continue recording management events as well. They cover control-plane changes, while the data selector covers runtime use. Neither category replaces the other when you need to know both who changed an agent and who invoked it.
For incident response
Use the CloudTrail event to establish that an invocation request occurred, then correlate its time and identity with application logs and service telemetry. Do not present the CloudTrail event as proof of an ordered internal execution trace.
For cost control
Prefer resource and event-name filters that reflect the monitoring boundary. Review the selector whenever new aliases, Regions, or invocation paths are introduced so that coverage remains intentional rather than silently expanding.
Operational boundaries to document
Write down which APIs your application uses, which Regions and aliases are in scope, where the trail stores its files, and who can read those files. That record prevents a common monitoring failure: a team believes it is auditing “agent activity” while its trail is actually recording only management changes or a different Bedrock endpoint.
Also document the evidence boundary. CloudTrail proves that a public API request was recorded with associated identity and request context; it does not promise a complete chronology of the agent’s internal work. Stating that limitation up front keeps audit conclusions proportional to what the event can actually show.
Bottom line
Configure CloudTrail data events explicitly: map InvokeAgent to AWS::Bedrock::AgentAlias, map InvokeInlineAgent to AWS::Bedrock::InlineAgent, set eventCategory to Data, and deliver the trail to S3. Use Event history only for the management-event view, budget for data-event charges, and treat the resulting records as request-level audit evidence rather than a step-by-step transcript of an agent run.
