Monitor an AI agent as a security principal, not as a chat transcript. Give it a unique identity, record each decision and tool action in an audit system the agent cannot modify, establish a baseline of normal behavior, and enforce controls that stop unapproved data from leaving. Detection should correlate prompts, plans, file access, tool calls, approvals, network requests, and resulting state changes; error logs alone will miss a successful exfiltration.
Why AI agents need security monitoring
An AI agent can read data, call tools, execute code, change records, contact services, and ask other agents to act. That delegated authority creates a larger attack surface than a model that only returns text. Microsoft describes every agent-to-tool, agent-to-service, and agent-to-agent interaction as an expansion of that attack surface, with risks including indirect prompt injection, unintended actions, and data exfiltration.
The danger is not limited to a malicious user. A poisoned document, web page, ticket, email, connector, or tool response can contain instructions that redirect an otherwise legitimate workflow. A compromised tool or newly added connector can also turn an approved action into a path for collecting and transmitting sensitive information. An agent may therefore produce a successful tool result while still violating policy.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallMonitoring has two jobs:
- Accountability: reconstruct who or what initiated an action, what the agent decided, which permissions it used, what data it touched, and what changed.
- Prevention: stop or require approval for risky collection, privilege changes, and outbound transmission before the action completes.
Observability alone records behavior. A mature control plane combines telemetry with authorization, sandboxing, egress restrictions, data-loss prevention, and human approval.

Define the trust boundary before collecting logs
Inventory every component that can influence an action
Create a maintained inventory for each model, agent, tool, plugin, connector, MCP server, data source, memory store, identity, and outbound destination. Include both production and development environments. For every item, record an owner, lifecycle status, version, allowed use, and the change-approval record. Store the inventory in version control so an unexpected addition is itself detectable.
Map the complete path from a human request to an external effect. A typical path is: user identity → agent session → model → retrieved context or memory → tool selection → authorization policy → tool execution → data store or network destination → resulting state change. Monitoring gaps usually occur at the boundaries between these systems, especially where an agent hands data to a connector or another agent.
Assign a distinct identity and permissions
Each deployed agent needs a unique, non-reusable identity. Also retain the initiating human or service principal, because an agent identity by itself cannot explain accountability. Bind permissions to the specific workflow and environment rather than giving every agent a broad service account.

| Inventory field | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Agent identity | Stable identifier, owner, environment, lifecycle status | Separates one agent’s behavior from another’s and supports revocation |
| Initiating principal | User or service identity, authentication context, session identifier | Connects an action to the person or upstream service that requested it |
| Delegated scope | Allowed tools, data classifications, operations, and destinations | Defines what “authorized” means for detection and response |
| Dependencies | Model version, policy version, prompt template, tool and MCP-server versions | Allows investigators to reproduce the decision context |
| Change record | Approver, timestamp, reason, and diff for additions or permission changes | Distinguishes an approved rollout from an unexpected capability |
Instrument the complete agent run
Events that must be captured
Emit structured events rather than relying on free-form application text. The minimum useful record covers the request, the plan, every tool interaction, every authorization decision, and the resulting state. OWASP’s AI Agent and MCP security guidance specifically calls for logging each tool call, command, file write, and network request with the agent identity, initiating user, session, and resulting diff.
| Event category | Fields to retain | Useful detection questions |
|---|---|---|
| Session start | Session ID, agent ID, initiating principal, timestamp, environment, request ID | Who started this run, and is the environment expected? |
| Model and policy context | Model and policy versions, prompt-template ID, dependency versions | Did behavior change after a model, policy, or connector update? |
| Plan and decision | Plan-step ID, selected tool, reason or decision code, risk classification | Was a high-impact action planned, and did it match the request? |
| Tool invocation | Tool name and version, exact arguments, argument classification, start and end times | Were parameters unusual, encoded, oversized, or outside the allowlist? |
| Data access | Resource identifier, operation, classification, record count or volume, success status | Did the agent read secrets, credentials, or an unexpectedly large set? |
| Authorization and approval | Policy decision, approver, approval ID, timestamp, reason, expiry | Was access denied, bypassed, or repeatedly requested? |
| Network activity | Destination, protocol, port, request size, response size, destination classification | Is this a first-seen or non-allowlisted destination? |
| Execution result | Exit status, error class, returned metadata, retry count | Did failures trigger a suspicious burst of retries? |
| State change | Before-and-after diff, object ID, actor, reversibility, rollback reference | What actually changed, independent of the model’s explanation? |
Use an event envelope that supports correlation
Every record should carry a common session and causality envelope. A representative structure is:

Use hashes or immutable references when the full payload is stored elsewhere. The important property is that an investigator can follow a request through plan, authorization, execution, network activity, and state change without guessing which records belong together.
Protect privacy and evidence quality
Send events to a central SIEM or audit store outside the agent’s control. Restrict write and delete permissions so an agent cannot erase or rewrite its own trail. Preserve policy and dependency versions with the run record, and make completed records available to incident responders.
Do not put passwords, access tokens, private keys, or unnecessary sensitive content into logs. Redact secrets at the instrumentation boundary, classify fields, and keep a governed reference to protected data when investigators need to retrieve it. Full production copies of sensitive chat content should be retained only when an approved policy requires them. Tamper resistance and data minimization are complementary: an immutable log that contains avoidable secrets creates a second security problem.
Establish a behavioral baseline
Detection needs context. For each agent and workflow, measure what normal looks like across tools, destinations, parameter shapes, data volume, approval behavior, latency, and failure patterns. Maintain separate baselines for different users, environments, and high-risk workflows; a development agent and a production deployment agent should not share one profile.
| Baseline dimension | Normal behavior to characterize | Deviation examples |
|---|---|---|
| Tool usage | Usual tools, order of calls, frequency, and retry pattern | A file-search agent suddenly invokes a shell or messaging tool |
| Destinations | Approved hosts, services, protocols, and ports | A first-seen internet destination or an unapproved network port |
| Parameters | Expected shapes, ranges, encodings, and object types | Encoded payloads, hidden commands, or a query scope far beyond the request |
| Data access | Typical repositories, classifications, record counts, and read depth | Recursive reads, credential-file access, or a sudden bulk export |
| Approvals | Which actions normally require approval and the usual approval rate | Repeated denials, approval bypass attempts, or an approver outside the workflow |
| Timing and cost | Typical latency, step count, loop behavior, and resource use | An unbounded loop, tool burst, or unusual high-risk action rate |
A successful call is not automatically safe. A request that returns a valid response can still be suspicious when its destination, payload, sequence, or volume is new. Baselines should therefore combine statistical deviation with policy context and data classification rather than relying on a single threshold.

Detect suspicious actions and possible exfiltration
Flag risky collection
- Access to credential files, secret stores, private keys, tokens, or other high-sensitivity resources.
- Bulk, recursive, or unusually deep reads that do not match the task’s stated scope.
- Cross-tenant, cross-project, or cross-environment access.
- Searches for system prompts, policy files, logging configuration, or authorization data when those resources are not required.
- Repeated attempts to obtain data after a policy denial.
Collection alerts should include the resource classification, quantity, parent plan step, and user request. A single sensitive read may be more important than thousands of ordinary reads.

- First-seen, non-allowlisted, or newly registered destinations.
- Outbound HTTP or other network traffic from an agent that normally has no network need.
- Large payloads, classified data, or a sudden increase in outbound volume.
- Encoded, compressed, obfuscated, or split parameters that conceal content.
- Outbound traffic to unusual ports or destinations reached immediately after sensitive reads.
Correlate data access and network events by session and time. A read followed by a new destination is more concerning than either event in isolation, especially when the payload contains a protected classification.
Flag manipulation and privilege changes
- Attempts to alter instructions, policies, CI configuration, deployment rules, or logging.
- Creation of a new tool, connector, MCP server, credential, or agent identity during a run.
- Privilege elevation, role changes, or requests to disable approval and monitoring.
- Repeated tool calls after a denial, rapid retries, or a sudden burst of high-risk actions.
- Cross-agent messages that request data or operations outside the receiving agent’s policy.
Correlate prompt-injection indicators with downstream effects
Do not alert on suspicious text alone and stop there. Treat indicators in retrieved content or tool output as one signal, then look for a resulting change in plan, tool selection, data scope, or network behavior. The strongest detection chain is often: untrusted content introduces instructions → the agent changes its plan → it reads a sensitive resource → it contacts a new destination. Store the whole chain for triage.
Block exfiltration before transmission
Monitoring cannot compensate for unrestricted authority. Apply controls in layers so one failed check does not expose data.
| Control | Implementation | Failure it addresses |
|---|---|---|
| Least privilege | Use per-agent and per-action identities with narrowly scoped data and operations | A prompt injection cannot use permissions the agent does not possess |
| Explicit action schemas | Validate tool names, argument types, allowed fields, ranges, and destinations before execution | Free-form model output smuggles commands or hidden parameters |
| Sandboxing | Isolate code execution and connectors from the host, credentials, and unrelated data | A tool compromise spreads into the wider environment |
| Egress allowlists | Permit only approved services, protocols, ports, and destinations | Data is sent to a first-seen or attacker-controlled endpoint |
| DLP inspection | Inspect tool arguments and outbound payloads for secrets and classified data | Sensitive content leaves through an otherwise permitted channel |
| Output filtering | Sanitize model output before it becomes a command, query, or message | Injected instructions are executed as trusted syntax |
| Step and rate limits | Limit loops, retries, total steps, volume, and resource cost | A runaway agent performs a large collection or action burst |
| Independent approval | Require a human or separate policy service for irreversible or high-impact actions | The agent approves its own deletion, deployment, permission, or transfer |
Apply DLP before encryption or transmission when the architecture permits it. If a connector encrypts a payload before inspection, inspect the classified fields or structured arguments at the tool boundary instead.

Design an approval workflow for high-impact actions
Approval should be tied to a specific action, scope, and expiration, not to a broad “let this agent do anything” grant. Record the approval ID in the authorization event and require the executor to verify that the request has not changed since approval.
| Action class | Default handling | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Read of ordinary, in-scope data | Automatic authorization under the agent’s fixed scope | Resource, classification, volume, and policy decision |
| Read of sensitive or credential-related data | Deny by default or require explicit, task-specific approval | Purpose, approver, exact resource, and expiration |
| External message or data transfer | Allow only to an approved destination; require approval for new destinations or classified payloads | Destination, payload classification, DLP result, and approval |
| Deletion, deployment, permission change, or money movement | Independent human approval and a reversible execution path where possible | Before-and-after diff, approver, rollback reference, and result |
| New tool, server, or connector | Block during a run; introduce through reviewed change control | Version, owner, requested scopes, security review, and activation record |
Implementation blueprint
- Map the trust boundary. List models, agents, tools, plugins, MCP servers, data stores, memory, identities, and destinations. Mark which components accept untrusted content.
- Create the identity and permission map. Give every agent a unique identity, record its owner, and define allowed tools, data scopes, operations, and destinations.
- Choose a central evidence store. Route structured events to an audit system that the agent and ordinary tool processes cannot alter. Define retention, access, redaction, and export rules.
- Add instrumentation at every boundary. Capture session start, model and policy versions, plan steps, tool arguments, file and data access, network requests, approvals, results, and state diffs.
- Classify data and actions. Label resources and payloads so authorization and DLP can distinguish ordinary content from credentials, secrets, personal data, and other protected classes.
- Build the baseline. Profile normal tools, destinations, parameters, volumes, approvals, latency, failures, and step counts for each workflow and environment.
- Write layered detections. Combine policy violations, first-seen destinations, sensitive reads, unusual sequences, and prompt-injection indicators. Correlate events by session rather than evaluating isolated log lines.
- Enforce prevention. Put allowlists, schema validation, sandboxing, DLP, output filtering, and step or rate limits in front of execution and egress.
- Gate irreversible effects. Require independent approval for deletion, deployment, permission changes, money movement, external messaging, and new network destinations.
- Test the controls. Use benign simulations of indirect prompt injection, denied approvals, bulk reads, encoded parameters, and blocked destinations. Verify that alerts contain enough context to investigate.
- Review changes. Treat new tools, servers, policies, model versions, and permission changes as controlled releases. Compare post-change behavior with the prior baseline.
Respond when an alert fires
Use a high-confidence alert to contain first, then investigate. A practical sequence is:
- Pause or quarantine the agent. Stop new tool calls while preserving the current session and queued actions.
- Revoke or narrow credentials. Remove the specific token, role, destination permission, or connector scope involved; avoid changing unrelated identities until the impact is understood.
- Block the destination. Add the endpoint or route to a temporary deny rule while checking whether other agents contacted it.
- Preserve the correlated trail. Export the session’s prompt or request identifier, plan, tool metadata, arguments, approvals, data classifications, network records, and state diffs.
- Determine exposure. Identify what data was read, what payload was prepared or transmitted, whether encryption or compression obscured inspection, and which users or tenants were affected.
- Reverse authorized changes. Use recorded diffs and rollback references for deletions, deployments, permission changes, or external messages where reversal is possible.
- Close the control gap. Update allowlists, policies, tests, dependency controls, and runbooks. If attribution or evidence was missing, treat that monitoring gap as an incident because reconstruction may be impossible next time.
Common monitoring failures
Only collecting model errors
Errors show that something failed; they do not show that a successful read or transmission was inappropriate. Add successful tool calls, authorization results, network activity, and state changes.
Logging without identity or causality
A timestamp and tool name are insufficient when multiple agents share credentials or run concurrently. Include agent identity, initiating principal, session, parent plan step, and approval reference in every event.
Allowing the agent to control its own evidence
Do not let the agent disable logging, delete records, or rewrite policy results. Send events to a separate audit boundary with restricted deletion and administrative access.

Using an allowlist without data inspection
An approved service can still receive an excessive or classified payload. Inspect tool arguments and outbound data, not just the destination name.
Trusting the agent’s explanation
Store the actual arguments, resource identifiers, network metadata, and before-and-after state. A natural-language rationale is useful context but is not proof of what executed.
Setting one baseline for every workflow
Different environments and jobs have different legitimate patterns. Separate profiles prevent a deployment workflow’s normal privilege from masking an unusual privilege request in a support workflow.

How to evaluate a monitoring approach
When selecting or designing an implementation, compare it on the capabilities that determine whether it can detect and stop exfiltration:
- Event coverage: Does it capture plans, tool calls, file writes, network requests, approvals, results, and state diffs?
- Identity attribution: Can every event be tied to an agent, initiating user, session, and delegated scope?
- Egress prevention: Can it block destinations and payloads before transmission, or does it only report them afterward?
- DLP depth: Does inspection cover tool parameters and structured outbound data, not just email or storage?
- Behavior detection: Can it baseline tools, sequences, volumes, destinations, and approval patterns by workflow?
- Approval workflow: Are high-impact actions paused until an independent approver authorizes the exact request?
- SIEM integration and response: Can investigators correlate events and automatically pause an agent, revoke access, or block a destination?
- Privacy and retention: Are secrets redacted, sensitive content minimized, and retention governed?
- Deployment complexity and cost: What instrumentation, policy maintenance, network control, and operational staffing are required?
An observability product may provide excellent records while offering no preventive control. Conversely, a gateway that blocks egress is difficult to investigate if it does not preserve the plan, identity, approval, and data-access context. Evaluate both halves together.
Operational review cadence
Review high-risk alerts immediately and examine aggregate behavior on a regular schedule. Owners should inspect new destinations, new tools or MCP servers, permission changes, sensitive-read patterns, repeated denials, and changes in step or data volume. Re-baseline after a model, policy, connector, or workflow change rather than assuming prior behavior remains valid.
Use the review to answer concrete questions: Can the team reconstruct a complete run? Can it identify the human principal? Can it prove what data left the boundary? Can it stop a repeat within the same session? Any “no” answer identifies a control or instrumentation priority.
