To monitor a Linux VPS with Sysdig, create a Linux agent account in Sysdig Monitor, add the host tags you need, copy the generated installation script, and run it on the VPS. Check the host first: you need a Sysdig account and agent access key, a supported Linux distribution, kernel 3.10 or newer, and outbound TCP port 6443 open to the regional collector. Use the universal eBPF driver on kernel 5.8 or newer; use the kernel-module driver on older supported kernels.
The fastest route is Integrations > Sysdig Agent > Linux. A package-based installation gives more control over repositories, configuration, and driver selection. Standalone binaries, containers, or a Kubernetes DaemonSet are alternatives when you are deploying Host Shield rather than using the conventional host-agent workflow.
What Sysdig monitoring adds to a Linux VPS
A VPS provider normally exposes basic virtual-machine metrics such as CPU, memory, disk, and network usage. A Sysdig agent extends that view with host telemetry collected from inside the Linux guest. The agent connects the VPS to your Sysdig account so you can inspect the host in the Sysdig Monitor interface, organize hosts with tags, and investigate resource or process activity from one console.
The agent is software running on the VPS, so installation is not just a browser setting. The host must meet the operating-system and kernel requirements, reach the appropriate regional collector, and load a compatible data-collection driver. If any of those prerequisites fails, the host may appear installed locally but never report in the console.

Check prerequisites before touching the VPS
Sysdig account and access key
Sign in to Sysdig Monitor with an administrator account. The Linux-agent workflow creates or uses an agent account and supplies an access key. Keep that key confidential: it authenticates the host to your Sysdig environment and should not be pasted into tickets, public repositories, or shell history that other users can read.
Supported distribution
Sysdig lists Debian 10 or later, Ubuntu 18 or later, CentOS 7 or later, and RHEL 7 or later among its supported examples, with additional distributions supported depending on the current agent documentation. Confirm your exact distribution and release in the live compatibility list before installation; a distribution that is merely Linux is not automatically supported.

Kernel version
The stated minimum is Linux kernel 3.10. Driver recommendations split at kernel 5.8:
- Kernel 5.8 and newer: the universal eBPF driver is recommended.
- Older supported kernels: the kernel-module driver is recommended.
- Below 3.10: the VPS does not meet the stated minimum and should be upgraded or moved before you attempt installation.
Check the running kernel, rather than only the distribution release, because VPS images can use a provider-specific kernel:
uname -rRecord the complete result, including any vendor suffix. That information is useful if the generated installer reports a driver mismatch.

- Your hosting provider’s network firewall, security group, or egress policy.
Allowing inbound traffic to the VPS is not a substitute for allowing the agent’s outbound connection. Do not change the destination port based on an old third-party example; the documented requirement for this setup is 6443.
Administrative access and a maintenance window
Have a shell account that can install packages or execute the generated installer with the privileges it requests. Installing an agent can add files, a service, and a kernel driver. On production systems, take a configuration backup and schedule the change within your normal maintenance process.

For one conventional Linux VPS, start with the Quick Start wizard. Use the package route when your change-management policy requires a managed repository or when you need to set the driver and other agent options yourself. The standalone, container, and DaemonSet choices belong to a different Host Shield deployment pattern and should not be substituted casually for the normal host-agent installer.
Install with the Sysdig Quick Start wizard
- Open the agent integration. In Sysdig Monitor, go to Integrations > Sysdig Agent. The exact wording can vary because Sysdig documentation also uses the terms “classic” agent and “Host Shield”; if your account displays a different label, choose the Linux host-agent integration rather than a Kubernetes-only integration.
- Create or select the Linux account. Choose the Linux option and add an account when prompted. The wizard associates the account with your Sysdig environment and exposes the access key required by the host.
- Enter host tags. Add tags that will let you filter and group hosts later. The documented examples use a
key:valueform such asrole:webserverorlocation:europe. Treat the exact syntax shown in your console as authoritative, because tag parsing and field names can change. - Copy the generated snippet. The wizard produces an installation command or script containing the account details and endpoint configuration. Copy it directly from the console; do not retype the access key or replace values with examples from an unrelated guide.
- Prepare the shell. Connect to the VPS, confirm the intended hostname, and check the kernel and distribution. Review the generated text before execution so you know which packages, files, and services it will change. If your organization requires approval, submit that exact snippet for review.
- Run the snippet on the VPS. Execute the generated command with the privileges requested by the installer. Keep the terminal output. It is the most useful evidence if enrollment or driver setup fails.
- Wait for enrollment. Return to the Sysdig integration or host view and look for the new host. Initial registration can take a short period while the service starts and establishes its outbound connection.
- Validate the result. Confirm that the host appears with the expected name and tags, that telemetry is arriving, and that no driver or connectivity warning is shown. A successful shell exit alone does not prove that the collector received data.
Install from packages when you need more control
The package path is primarily described for Debian and Ubuntu systems. It is more deliberate than the wizard because you establish the package trust chain, repository, headers, and driver configuration yourself.

- Confirm release support. Verify that the VPS is a supported Debian or Ubuntu release and that its running kernel meets the 3.10 minimum.
- Install matching kernel headers. Headers must correspond to the running kernel when the selected driver needs to build or load kernel components. If the VPS provider does not expose matching headers, resolve that mismatch before installing the agent.
- Trust Sysdig’s signing key. Add the GPG key using the current instructions from Sysdig’s package documentation. Do not copy a key or repository line from an unmaintained third-party repository.
- Add the official apt repository. Configure the repository for the operating-system release and architecture. Check that apt can reach it and that package signatures validate before proceeding.
- Install the agent package. Install the package specified by the current Sysdig instructions. Keep the package-manager output, including dependency or signature errors.
- Set the driver. Edit
/etc/default/dragentand select the driver appropriate for the running kernel. Use the universal eBPF driver on kernel 5.8 or newer; select the kernel-module driver for an older supported kernel. - Start and enable the service. Use the service-management procedure documented for the package and your distribution. Verify that the service remains running after a restart rather than assuming a successful package transaction means the agent is active.
- Enroll and verify in Sysdig Monitor. Supply the access key and tags through the package configuration or enrollment process described by the current documentation, then confirm that the VPS reports in the console.
Package names, repository paths, service names, and configuration keys can change between agent generations. Use the live Sysdig package instructions for those values instead of hard-coding a command copied from an older article.
Selecting the Linux data-collection driver
Universal eBPF driver
Choose the universal eBPF driver when the VPS runs Linux kernel 5.8 or newer. eBPF support is integrated into modern kernels and is the recommended path in the documented driver guidance. The recommendation still depends on the actual kernel configuration supplied by your VPS provider, so check installer output and agent health after enrollment.
Kernel-module driver
Use the kernel-module driver for older kernels that remain within the supported range. This path depends more directly on kernel headers and the ability to build or load a compatible module. A kernel update can change that compatibility, so recheck the driver whenever the provider changes the VPS kernel.
Where the setting lives
For package installations, the driver is configured in /etc/default/dragent. Make a backup before editing, change only the documented driver setting, and restart the agent using the package’s service procedure. For the Quick Start route, inspect the generated installer and resulting configuration rather than assuming it selected the driver you intended.
Use tags to make multiple VPSs manageable
Tags are most useful when they answer a recurring operational question: which hosts are web servers, which belong to a region, or which are part of a particular environment? A consistent key and value make filtering more reliable than free-form host names.

Keep spelling and capitalization consistent across hosts. Before deploying at scale, enroll one VPS and verify how the tags appear in filters and host details. If the console rejects a tag, follow the syntax displayed by that account; the examples above illustrate the documented pattern but are not a guarantee that every account version accepts every key.
Verify telemetry after installation
Use this sequence instead of relying on a single “installed” message:
- Host identity: confirm the expected VPS hostname or host record appears in the correct Sysdig account.
- Tags: check that each tag is visible and filterable.
- Fresh data: open the host metrics or activity view and confirm that values are updating rather than showing only a registration timestamp.
- Service health: use your distribution’s service manager to verify that the agent is running and configured to start after reboot.
- Driver health: check the agent output for eBPF or kernel-module errors, especially after a kernel update.
- Network path: confirm that outbound TCP 6443 remains allowed in both the guest firewall and the provider firewall.
Troubleshoot the common failure branches
The host never appears in Sysdig Monitor
- Recheck that the access key belongs to the Sysdig account where you are looking.
- Confirm that the complete generated snippet was copied and executed, without a wrapped or truncated key.
- Check outbound TCP 6443 at both firewall layers.
- Review the installer and service output for an enrollment or certificate error.
The installer reports an unsupported system
Compare the VPS distribution and release with the supported list, then check uname -r. A supported distribution running an unexpectedly old or provider-customized kernel can still fail the compatibility check. Upgrade the image or kernel only through a procedure supported by your VPS provider, and revalidate the driver afterward.
The driver fails to build or load
For a kernel-module installation, verify that matching kernel headers are installed and that the module can be built for the running kernel. For a kernel 5.8-or-newer host, evaluate the universal eBPF option recommended by Sysdig. Do not switch drivers blindly: record the current kernel, configuration, and error output before changing the setting in /etc/default/dragent.
Package installation fails on repository or signature checks
Stop when the package manager reports an untrusted key, an incorrect distribution codename, or a signature failure. Recheck the current official repository instructions and the VPS clock, then correct the repository configuration. Avoid substituting an old community repository simply because it has a shorter command.

The console labels do not match your instructions
Sysdig documentation uses both “classic” agent and “Host Shield” terminology. Product navigation can therefore differ by account, edition, or documentation generation. Look for the Linux host-agent integration under Integrations and compare the options shown in your account with the current documentation before proceeding.

- Store the access key in a protected secret-management system when automating deployment.
- Review generated scripts before running them, particularly on production VPSs.
- Permit only the outbound collector access required by your network policy; the documented collector port is TCP 6443.
- Keep the agent package and driver aligned with kernel updates. A host can remain online while its driver becomes incompatible after a reboot.
- Test upgrades on one representative VPS before applying them to a fleet with different distributions or kernels.
- Remove stale host records and rotate credentials according to your organization’s access-control policy.
Cost and licensing
The installation requirements do not establish a price or licensing term. Check Sysdig’s current commercial documentation for the account edition, retention, host limits, and billing model that apply to your organization before committing a fleet deployment. Do not infer cost from the installer or from a third-party repository.
A practical decision guide
Use Quick Start when
You have one or a few standard Linux VPSs, want the shortest supported path, and are comfortable letting the wizard generate the enrollment command. It minimizes manual repository work and puts the access key and endpoint values in the correct format.
Use packages when
Your team manages software through apt, requires a reviewable repository and GPG trust chain, needs explicit control of /etc/default/dragent, or expects to standardize driver settings across many Debian or Ubuntu hosts.
Use a standalone binary, container, or DaemonSet when
Your deployment specifically targets Host Shield and your runtime requires that packaging model. Validate the Host Shield prerequisites separately; those models are not interchangeable with a normal single-VPS agent installation.
