Monitor a Core Lightning (CLN) node in four separate streams: supported-release and security notices, persistent daemon logs, peer connectivity, and payment RPC results. A failed payment or disconnected peer is usually an operational problem, not proof of compromise; a security conclusion requires correlation with release information, daemon behavior, and your deployment history.
This guide gives a repeatable operator routine for CLN, including the commands to inspect peers and payments, a logging policy that preserves evidence without running permanently at debug level, and an escalation path for clusters of failures or unexpected changes.
What a useful CLN monitoring routine measures
Monitoring is not one alarm. It is a set of observations that answer different questions:
- Is the daemon on a supported version? Core Lightning follows a three-month release cycle, and the project’s security policy says that the last two versions are supported.
- Can you reconstruct what happened? Daemon logs must be written to a persistent location and retained long enough to investigate restarts, peer changes, and payment errors.
- Can the node reach its channel peers? A peer with an open channel can still be disconnected, which can explain routing problems without indicating an attack.
- What happened to each payment attempt? A summary status is useful for an overview, while per-attempt RPCs expose routing-failure details.
Keep these streams distinct in your notes and alerts. Combining them too early produces false positives—for example, treating one failed payment and one disconnected peer as a security incident before checking whether the peer was already offline for routine maintenance.

Track releases and security information
Use the supported-version policy as your baseline
The official Core Lightning security policy describes a three-month release cycle and support for the two most recent versions. Record the CLN version running on every node, then compare it with the currently supported releases shown in the project’s release information. A node outside that window deserves an upgrade plan even when payments appear healthy, because fixes may not be backported indefinitely.
On September 22, 2026, the official Core Lightning releases page listed version v26.06.8 as the latest release. Its release entry said, “We strongly recommend upgrading to this release,” because it included fixes for vulnerabilities reported responsibly. Treat that statement as release-specific guidance, not as a permanent rule that every future point release is urgent.
| Release-monitoring fact | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Three-month release cycle | Review release information at least once each cycle and whenever a security notice appears. |
| Last two versions supported | Keep production nodes within the two-version support window or document the risk and an upgrade date. |
| v26.06.8 listed September 22, 2026 | Check whether your node is older and read the point-release notes before upgrading. |
| Point releases can contain vulnerability fixes | Do not skip a point release solely because the major or minor version looks unchanged. |
Review more than an advisory list
The security page listed no published advisories. An empty page is only a snapshot; it does not prove that a particular version is vulnerability-free. Release notes, maintainer announcements, and the release entry itself can contain security-relevant information even when the advisory list has no items.
During each review, read the release notes for four things:
- security fixes or vulnerabilities reported responsibly;
- breaking changes that affect plugins, configuration, or automation;
- operator instructions, including migration or restart requirements; and
- changes that could alter payment routing or peer behavior.
Build a release-review procedure
- Write down the node’s deployed CLN version, installation method, and the date of the last restart.
- Check the official Core Lightning release page and security policy, then identify whether the node is inside the two-version support window.
- Read the complete notes for the newest applicable release, including point-release notes. Separate security fixes from ordinary feature changes in your change record.
- Confirm that the release artifact matches the project’s signed release tags and published signing keys when authenticity matters for your environment.
- Schedule the upgrade using the method that matches the deployment: release binaries, a Docker image, or a source build are all installation routes described by the project README.
- After the upgrade and restart, verify that logging, peer connectivity, and payment inspection still work before closing the change.
If you believe you have found a CLN vulnerability, the security policy lists security@blockstream.com for vulnerability reports and says that address is exclusively for that purpose. Use the private reporting route instead of publishing exploit details immediately.

Make daemon logs useful without creating unnecessary exposure
Configure a persistent log file
In daemon mode, the official sample configuration requires a log-file path. The same sample uses log-level=info for normal operation and describes debug logging as more verbose. Apply the equivalent settings in the configuration file used by the installed release, because option names and defaults should always be checked against that release’s documentation.
| Setting or practice | Normal use | Operational caution |
|---|---|---|
log-file |
Write daemon output to a persistent path in daemon mode. | Ensure the path is writable, has sufficient capacity, and is included in your retention and backup policy. |
log-level=info |
Use as the routine verbosity shown in the official sample configuration. | Information level may not answer a highly specific diagnostic question; increase verbosity temporarily when needed. |
| Debug logging | Enable for a defined investigation, then return to the routine level. | It produces more data, consumes storage, and may reveal sensitive operational details. |
| Log retention | Keep enough history to correlate restarts, peer transitions, releases, and payment attempts. | Set retention and access controls deliberately; do not expose logs as a public web resource. |
Use a least-verbose-first strategy
Keep routine logging at the least verbose setting that answers your operational questions. When a payment or peer problem needs more context, increase verbosity for that investigation, capture the relevant interval, and then restore the normal setting. This limits storage growth and reduces the amount of sensitive operational information retained indefinitely.
When changing verbosity, record the start and end times, the question you are trying to answer, and the node version. Without that context, a later reviewer may mistake a deliberately verbose diagnostic interval for a change in the daemon’s normal behavior.
Preserve evidence around restarts
An unexplained restart is a signal to correlate, not a diagnosis. Preserve the log segment before and after the event, the deployed version, the host’s restart history, and any payment or peer anomalies observed at the same time. If your log rotation removes the relevant interval, you may lose the ability to distinguish a crash, an operator restart, a host failure, or a process supervisor action.
Check peer connectivity with listpeers
What the RPC tells you
Run:
lightning-cli listpeers
The RPC reports connection status for peers, including peers that have open channels but are currently disconnected. That distinction matters: channel capacity can exist while the transport connection needed for forwarding is unavailable. A disconnected peer can therefore explain a routing problem, but the disconnected state alone is not evidence of compromise.

listpeers can also return peer-specific log entries when supplied a log level. Use that output after identifying a peer whose state is relevant to the payment or channel under investigation.

Interpret a disconnected peer carefully
- One disconnected peer: check whether the payment route depended on that peer and whether the channel is otherwise healthy. Do not escalate as a security event from this observation alone.
- Several peers changing state: compare the timing with host networking, firewall, maintenance, or a daemon restart. A simultaneous transition is an operational clue that deserves correlation.
- A peer repeatedly disconnecting: capture peer-specific logs at the diagnostic level and compare the events with payment failures. Repetition makes the issue worth investigating, but it still does not identify the cause by itself.
- Peer status normal while payments fail: move to payment-level RPCs. Healthy transport connections do not guarantee a usable route or sufficient liquidity for every destination.
A peer-focused diagnostic sequence
- Run
lightning-cli listpeersand identify the peers involved in the failed payment’s route, if that information is available. - Note each peer’s connected or disconnected state and whether it has an open channel.
- For a relevant disconnected or unstable peer, request peer-specific log output with the appropriate log level.
- Compare the timestamps with the payment attempt, daemon restart history, and any recent upgrade.
- Only after this comparison decide whether the next action is network troubleshooting, channel investigation, a payment retry, or security escalation.
Use the payment RPCs at the right level of detail
Start with listpays for status
Run lightning-cli listpays to review payment status. The RPC summarizes payments as pending, complete, or failed. The reference describes it as combining the results from listsendpays, which lists every payment part, and it can return all payments or a single payment when a BOLT11 invoice or payment hash is specified.
Use this view for a quick inventory: which payments are still unresolved, which completed, and which failed. It is not the best place to infer the exact route error for one attempt, because a single payment can contain multiple parts.
Inspect attempts with listsendpays
Run lightning-cli listsendpays when you need per-attempt detail. It exposes outgoing sendpay attempts and can include error data. This is the level to inspect when a payment has multiple parts, when one part failed while another succeeded, or when you need to compare route-specific errors.
Keep the payment hash, attempt identifiers, timestamps, and returned error data together in your incident notes. Do not collapse several attempts into one generic “payment failed” record; the differences can show whether the problem is tied to one route, one peer, or the destination.

Use waitsendpay for an unresolved payment
Run lightning-cli waitsendpay for a payment initiated earlier when you want to poll or wait for its outcome. On an error, it returns routing-failure information. This makes it useful for a payment that remains pending in the summary view or for an investigation that needs the final routing error rather than an early observation.
Follow a payment-failure workflow
- Run
lightning-cli listpaysand identify the payment by invoice or payment hash. - If the status is pending, use
lightning-cli waitsendpayto wait for or poll the outcome, subject to the timeout and automation policy you choose. - If the status is failed, run
lightning-cli listsendpaysand examine each outgoing attempt and its error data. - Compare the timing and route information with
lightning-cli listpeers, paying particular attention to peers that were disconnected or repeatedly unstable. - Use the project’s payment FAQ and RPC documentation to interpret the routing failure. Do not treat every failed attempt as evidence of compromise.
- Record whether the failure was isolated, route-specific, destination-specific, or part of a broader change affecting many payments.
Distinguish routing trouble from possible compromise
Core Lightning’s troubleshooting material explicitly addresses the question, “My payment is failing / all my payments are failing, why?” The practical implication is to investigate payment mechanics before assigning a security cause. A failed route, a disconnected channel peer, and a destination that cannot accept the payment can all produce an error without an attacker being present.
At the same time, security monitoring should not dismiss a broad change. Correlate independent signals and preserve evidence before making changes that erase it.
| Observed signal | What it can indicate operationally | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| One failed payment | A route or destination problem affecting that attempt. | Inspect listsendpays error data and use waitsendpay if the result is unresolved. |
| Many failures in a short interval | A shared routing, peer, node, or configuration problem. | Compare payment hashes and route errors, then inspect peer states and daemon logs. |
| Open-channel peer disconnected | Loss of a currently usable connection, potentially affecting routes through that peer. | Use peer-specific logs and check whether the failed routes depended on that peer. |
| Unexpected daemon restart | Process, host, maintenance, or infrastructure event. | Preserve surrounding logs and correlate the restart with payment and peer changes. |
| New security-relevant release | A reason to review exposure and upgrade guidance, even if current payments work. | Read the release notes, verify the artifact, and plan the supported upgrade. |
| Several signals occurring together | A higher-priority incident candidate, without proving compromise. | Freeze relevant evidence, compare timestamps, and follow your incident-response process. |
Core Lightning’s published documentation does not define a single event that proves compromise and does not publish universal alarm thresholds. Your threshold should reflect the node’s payment volume, channel topology, maintenance schedule, and acceptable downtime. Document that threshold rather than silently changing it after an incident.

Automate checks without inventing universal thresholds
Choose polling for simplicity or event-aware checks for context
Core Lightning exposes JSON-RPC through lightning-cli. A simple monitor can run scheduled checks for version information, peer status, payment summaries, and recent log changes. The project also provides a wait RPC that waits for a subsystem index to reach a requested value. That RPC can serve as a building block for event-aware polling, reducing blind loops when a subsystem has not advanced.

Core Lightning’s official pages do not prescribe a monitoring stack, alert cadence, or threshold for failed payments, disconnected peers, or log events. Select intervals based on your operational needs: a high-volume routing node may need tighter observation than a low-volume private node, while an offline maintenance window should suppress or annotate expected alerts.
Design alerts around evidence, not single observations
- Alert on a node leaving the supported-version window or on a release note that calls for prompt upgrading.
- Alert when the daemon stops writing to its expected log file, but first rule out planned maintenance and storage exhaustion.
- Alert on a sustained pattern of payment failures, not merely one failed attempt; include the count, time window, and representative routing errors.
- Alert on repeated peer transitions or a broad loss of connected peers, with maintenance suppression available.
- Alert on an unexpected restart and attach the log interval surrounding it.
Every alert should include the node identity, CLN version, observation window, command or log source, and the last known maintenance event. An alert without those fields forces an operator to recreate context under pressure.
Test automation safely
Exercise the monitor on a non-production node before depending on it. Generate known state changes, confirm that a pending payment is not incorrectly labeled failed, verify that a disconnected peer does not trigger a compromise verdict by itself, and check that log rotation does not break collection. Record the expected output for each test so a future CLN upgrade can be validated quickly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDeployment requirements that affect monitoring
The official Core Lightning README says CLN runs on Linux and macOS, requires a fully synchronized bitcoind, and lists version 25.0 or above for that Bitcoin daemon in the repository text. CLN exposes JSON-RPC through a Unix-domain socket accessed with lightning-cli or a Python client.
Confirm requirements against the exact CLN release you deploy. A monitoring script that can reach the RPC socket but is pointed at the wrong network, data directory, or node identity can produce plausible-looking results for the wrong instance. Keep the RPC socket protected by the host’s permissions and do not publish it as an unauthenticated network endpoint.
Account for the installation method
- Release binary: tie the installed binary to the verified release artifact and signed tag.
- Docker image: record the image tag and digest in the change record, and ensure the container’s log path and RPC socket are accessible to your monitor.
- Source build: record the source revision and build process so the running binary can be reproduced or audited.
Regardless of installation method, keep the deployed version, configuration location, log location, and restart procedure together in the node’s runbook.
A practical operator schedule
At every operational review
- Record the running CLN version and compare it with the two supported releases.
- Read new release notes and security information, including point releases.
- Confirm that daemon logging is persistent, writable, and retaining the required history.
- Run
lightning-cli listpeersand note disconnected peers with open channels. - Run
lightning-cli listpaysand investigate pending or failed payments using the more detailed RPCs. - Review unexpected restarts, repeated peer anomalies, and clusters of payment failures as separate but correlatable signals.
When a payment fails
- Identify the payment in
listpays. - Use
waitsendpayif it is pending or you need the final routing result. - Use
listsendpaysto inspect each attempt and its error data. - Check relevant peers with
listpeersand inspect peer-specific logs when necessary. - Compare the event with daemon logs and recent changes before retrying repeatedly.
When a security-relevant release appears
- Confirm the release identity against signed tags and published keys where required.
- Read the release notes for the vulnerability fix, affected versions, breaking changes, and operator instructions.
- Compare the affected range with every deployed node, including nodes that are not currently routing payments.
- Plan the upgrade using the node’s installation method and preserve pre-upgrade logs and configuration.
- After restarting, verify the log stream, RPC access, peer states, and payment inspection workflow.
What this monitoring approach can and cannot prove
These checks can show that a node is outside the supported release window, that logging is unavailable, that peers are disconnected, or that payments are failing with particular routing errors. They can help you correlate those observations in time. They cannot, on their own, prove that a node has been compromised, establish the attacker’s identity, or supply a universal definition of abnormal behavior.
