Moderate suggestions with a three-part system: define what is in scope before the broadcast, route messages through platform filters and a human review queue, and increase chat friction when volume or abuse rises. A moderator should acknowledge useful ideas, explain out-of-scope requests, and remove or restrict behavior that breaks the published rules without promising to use every suggestion.
The controls differ between Twitch, YouTube Live, and TikTok LIVE, so configure the tools your platform actually provides and tell viewers when a message is being held, delayed, or filtered.
Define the suggestion system before you go live
Viewers can only follow rules they can see. Publish a short statement in the stream description, community post, or pre-show message that answers three questions: which suggestions are welcome, where to submit them, and what happens when someone posts spam, harassment, unsafe instructions, personal data, or an unrelated request.
Specify the scope
Use concrete categories rather than “send ideas.” For example, a gaming stream might accept level strategies, accessibility requests, and questions about the current match, while declining spoilers, requests to reveal private information, and demands to change the broadcast format. A software demonstration might accept feature questions and reproducible bug reports but defer account-specific support to a private channel.

Give viewers a submission format
Ask for one idea per message and provide a compact template such as Suggestion: [action] — Why: [benefit]. Tell viewers whether they should use ordinary chat, a command, a channel point or reward request, or another queue available on the platform. A format makes repeated ideas easier to group and gives moderators enough context to make a quick decision.
Publish the enforcement ladder
Describe the response in plain language: a reminder for an accidental mistake, removal for prohibited content, a timeout or mute for repeated disruption, and a block for serious or persistent abuse. State that moderators may hold or hide a message while checking it. Do not promise that every suggestion will be read aloud or acted on.
Assign people and make escalation unambiguous
A creator who is also presenting cannot reliably watch every message. Assign at least one moderator before the broadcast and decide who has authority to remove content, restrict a user, change chat modes, and handle an appeal. Platform permissions differ, so test the role with a private or unlisted stream and confirm that the moderator can see the relevant controls.

- Routine suggestion: acknowledge it, place it in the agreed queue, or group it with an existing request.
- Unclear or borderline message: hold it for a second moderator or the creator rather than making a rushed public judgment.
- Spam, harassment, threats, personal data, or illegal activity: remove or restrict it immediately under the published rules, then escalate serious safety concerns through the platform’s reporting process.
- Dispute about a removal: move the discussion out of fast chat; do not let an appeal turn into a second stream-wide argument.
Give moderators a private backchannel and a few agreed labels—such as in scope, duplicate, needs review, and out of scope. Consistent labels prevent two moderators from giving contradictory answers.

Choose controls that match the risk and chat volume
Automation is a filter, not a final judge. A blocked-word list can catch abuse but also catch an innocent phrase; an automatic hold can protect the stream while leaving a legitimate suggestion unseen until someone reviews it. Tell viewers how to rephrase a valid idea if a filter catches it.

Increase friction only as much as needed. During ordinary chat, a low-friction queue encourages ideas; during a surge, preserving a readable and safe conversation matters more than instant delivery.
Platform controls and practical setup
Twitch
Twitch’s moderation setup documents AutoMod, blocked words and phrases, link review, slow mode, restricted modes, and a non-moderator chat delay. Configure the filters and decide which messages require approval before the stream starts in the channel’s moderation settings described by Twitch Help.
Twitch gives a specific example rather than a universal rule: “A good setting for allowing moderation without a noticeable impact on the viewer experience is 2 seconds.” Treat that as Twitch’s guidance for its chat-delay setting, not as a guaranteed best delay for every audience or format.

For a working moderator desk, open Mod View and arrange the panels you need. Twitch documents a Rewards Request Queue there; use it only when your channel’s reward workflow genuinely represents suggestions, because the documentation does not establish it as a general-purpose suggestion inbox. YouTube Live
YouTube Live provides a blocked-words list, automatic holding of potentially inappropriate live messages at Basic or Strict levels, and slow mode. Held messages remain hidden when nobody takes action, so a viewer may not know whether a suggestion is waiting for review or was rejected. Explain this in your pre-stream notice and have a moderator clear the queue deliberately.
Only the channel owner or a managing moderator can change automatic moderation settings, according to YouTube’s live-chat moderation guidance. Confirm that the person operating the dashboard has that permission before the broadcast; an ordinary chat moderator may be able to act on messages without being able to change the hold level.

TikTok LIVE
TikTok’s safety guidance describes community moderators who can mute or block users, filter comments, and pin comments. Use a pinned comment for the current suggestion prompt or the accepted format, then update it when the stream changes topic. Details are in the TikTok LIVE safety guide.

Interfaces and permissions can change, so verify the current live interface immediately before an important event rather than relying on an old screenshot.
Run a repeatable moderation sequence
1. Prepare the room
- Write the scope, submission format, and enforcement ladder in one short rule.
- Assign moderators, test their permissions, and give them a private escalation channel.
- Load blocked words and phrases that are clearly abusive or disruptive. Avoid broad terms that would hide ordinary topic discussion.
- Choose an initial chat mode and decide what event will trigger slow or restricted mode.
- Prepare a pinned or spoken prompt, such as “One suggestion per message; include the action and the reason.”
2. Set expectations at the start
Repeat the prompt verbally and pin it where the platform allows. Tell viewers which filters or slow mode are active and how to submit a legitimate suggestion that is held. This short explanation prevents many “Why was my message ignored?” complaints.
3. Moderate normal traffic
Have one moderator scan for safety and rule violations while another, if available, groups useful ideas. Acknowledge a suggestion without implying a commitment: “Logged for a future stream” is different from “We will add this.” For duplicates, point to the existing idea instead of debating every copy. If a request is outside the scope, give one clear reason and redirect it to the appropriate channel.

- Announce that the chat is moving to slow mode or another restricted setting because messages are arriving too quickly to review safely.
- Prioritize threats, harassment, scams, personal-data exposure, and coordinated spam over routine suggestions.
- Use held-message review and keyword filtering to keep questionable content away from the public feed.
- Ask viewers to send one concise suggestion in the published format; do not invite a flood of reformulations.
- Escalate borderline cases to the designated decision-maker instead of arguing in public.
5. Restore normal conversation
When the queue is manageable, return to the usual mode and say that normal posting has resumed. Review messages that were held or removed by mistake, answer a reasonable appeal privately or in a dedicated channel, and adjust the rule or filter that caused the confusion. Record the change so the next moderator shift uses the same policy.

Make suggestions easy to read and act on
Moderation works better when the input itself is structured. Ask for a short action, the expected benefit, and any relevant constraint. A moderator can then classify it quickly:

Pinning the current prompt is especially useful when the stream has several segments. Replace an old prompt rather than leaving multiple competing instructions visible.
Handle false positives, appeals, and moderator disagreement
When an innocent suggestion is filtered
Do not disable every filter because one valid message was held. Ask the viewer to rephrase without the flagged term, then have a moderator review the original when practical. If the same harmless phrase is repeatedly caught, narrow the keyword rule and document why.

When a viewer challenges a removal
Acknowledge the appeal once, state the relevant rule, and move the discussion away from the main chat. Never require a viewer to repost prohibited material in order to prove that it was harmless. If the decision was wrong, restore the message or apologize through the channel you use for appeals.
When moderators disagree
Use the escalation owner named before the stream. Until that person decides, keep a borderline message hidden rather than exposing it to settle an internal argument publicly. Afterward, update the rule with an example so the same ambiguity does not recur.
Troubleshoot common moderation failures

Review the stream and improve the next one
After the broadcast, inspect the suggestion queue and moderation actions while the context is fresh. Note which ideas were actionable, which filters produced false positives, when chat volume became unmanageable, and whether a moderator lacked a needed permission. Turn those observations into one or two rule or filter changes; a long, constantly changing rulebook is harder for viewers and moderators to follow.
Also check whether any removed message contained a legitimate accessibility or safety request. A quiet queue can hide an important need if the filter is too broad. Preserve the useful suggestion, record the decision, and update the prompt so future viewers can submit it clearly.

A compact pre-stream checklist
- Scope and prohibited behavior are written in viewer-friendly language.
- Submission format and location are visible.
- Moderators, permissions, and escalation owner are confirmed.
- Blocked words, held-message level, and link review are tested.
- Initial chat mode and surge trigger are agreed.
- Pinned prompt and rephrase instructions are ready.
- Private moderator backchannel is working.
- Post-stream review owner is assigned.
