In a Go upload workflow, moderate a caption as text and the image bytes as an image, then apply your own policy to both results. Keep uploads pending until those checks finish, and route uncertain or policy-sensitive cases to a human. A moderation label is a signal for a decision—not proof that content is safe, lawful, or consistent with its caption.
Why captions and image uploads need separate checks
Captions are text; image uploads contain pixels. Send each to a moderation capability that supports that input type. OpenAI documents both text and image classification, while Google Cloud Vision SafeSearch classifies images and Amazon Rekognition provides image moderation. Their labels and taxonomies differ, so an “adult” or “racy” result from one service is not a universal platform rule.
Do not assume that classifying both inputs establishes whether an image actually matches its caption. The cited documentation describes classification capabilities, not reliable joint reasoning about image-caption consistency. If that relationship matters to your product, define a separate policy and review path rather than treating two independent results as a verified match.
What the moderation services return
| Service | Documented input or output | Go and workflow details |
|---|---|---|
| Google Cloud Vision SafeSearch | Image likelihood values for adult, spoof, medical, violence, and racy categories. | Official documentation includes a Go client example. It shows local image and remote-URI examples, but warns that fetching external image URLs can fail and recommends not relying on externally hosted images in production. |
| Amazon Rekognition | Image moderation results use a hierarchical label taxonomy; the response includes a moderation model version. | Supports synchronous image moderation and asynchronous media-analysis operations. AWS provides a Go SDK reference. |
| OpenAI Moderation | Documents text and image classification. | The guide says to review results before displaying output or taking downstream action. The guide cited here does not establish a specific Go sample. |
These are capability differences, not a quality ranking. The cited documentation does not provide a shared independent comparison of accuracy, latency, or cost on representative user uploads.

Build a staged moderation pipeline in Go
Model moderation as a sequence of decisions, not a single boolean returned by a vendor. The exact storage design and thresholds belong to your application; the following sequence is a practical implementation pattern.

- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Crisp HD 720p/30 fps video calls with diagonal 55° field of view and auto light correction. Compatible with popular platforms including Skype and Zoom.
- The built-in noise-reducing mic makes sure your voice comes across clearly up to 1.5 meters away, even if you’re in busy surroundings.

- The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.
- Validate and quarantine the upload. Check that the request, caption, and image meet your application’s input requirements. Store the image in a pending state or otherwise prevent public display while checks are incomplete.
- Classify the caption as text. Send only the caption to a text-capable moderation endpoint. Keep the returned categories and scores with the upload record.
- Classify the image bytes with an image-capable endpoint. Prefer your controlled upload path over a remote URL where applicable. Google warns that external image retrieval may fail and advises against production dependence on externally hosted images.
- Preserve the decision evidence. Record the provider, returned labels or scores, and model version when provided. Rekognition documents a moderation model version in its response. Keep enough context to explain later why the application allowed, blocked, or escalated a submission.
- Apply application policy. Map provider results to your own allow, block, or review actions. Decide explicitly how to handle a strong flag in either modality, conflicting results, and missing or failed responses.
- Release only after the required checks. On an allow decision, transition the upload out of pending state. On block or review, keep it unavailable to the public while following your enforcement or review process.
Set thresholds and route uncertain cases deliberately
Provider scores and labels are inputs to policy, not the policy itself. Define thresholds against your product’s rules and risk tolerance; the cited service documentation does not establish suitable thresholds for your application.
- Allow: Use only when required checks completed and their results meet your defined policy.
- Block: Use when a result meets a clearly defined enforcement rule. Make the action specific to the content and policy rather than assuming a vendor category has the same meaning everywhere.
- Review: Route ambiguous scores, conflicting caption and image results, policy-sensitive material, and content needing contextual judgment to trained reviewers.
Give reviewers the caption, image, relevant moderation outputs, and the policy question they need to resolve. Include a way for users to report content and appeal an enforcement decision; those routes address cases an automated first pass may not settle.

AWS describes machine-flagged human review as a way to reduce reviewer workload and says the human set is “typically 1-5% of the total volume.” That is AWS’s generalized description, not an independently verified rate or a forecast for your application. Measure your own queue volume and reviewer outcomes before staffing or setting service expectations. See the Amazon Rekognition moderation guide.
Handle API failures as moderation outcomes
A timeout or provider error is not an allow result. Keep the upload pending when a required moderation check fails, then retry under a bounded policy or route it for an operational decision. Avoid silently publishing content because a service is unavailable.

Remote-image analysis adds a retrieval failure mode: Google documents that external image URL fetches can fail. Submitting bytes from your controlled upload path, where the service supports it, avoids depending on a third party’s availability or access to the URL. Design retries, timeouts, and any manual fallback around the provider and your own upload system.

Do not treat moderation as a legality check
Moderation services are not exhaustive filters and do not establish that an image is legal. AWS states: “Amazon Rekognition isn’t an authority on, and doesn’t in any way claim to be an exhaustive filter of, inappropriate or offensive content.” Its documentation also says Rekognition moderation does not detect illegal content such as CSAM.

OpenAI’s guide says not to send known or suspected CSAM to its Moderation API; the endpoint is not designed for that use. Do not use these general moderation endpoints as a child-safety detection or response system. Follow dedicated child-safety safeguards and applicable response procedures for suspected illegal material.
