To mirror a Windows computer, turn on a Miracast-compatible TV, projector, monitor, or wireless adapter, press Windows key + K, select the display, and approve any prompt. Then press Windows key + P and choose Duplicate if you want the same image on both screens or Extend if you want extra desktop space. Macs use Apple’s AirPlay system instead, so the receiving device must support AirPlay and the two devices normally need to be on the same Wi-Fi network.

What screen mirroring does

Screen mirroring displays one computer’s desktop on another screen in real time. The TV, projector, monitor, or receiving computer shows the same picture as the source computer. This is useful for presentations, demonstrations, viewing photos, or making a laptop screen visible to a group.

Mirroring is different from extending the desktop. In an extended setup, the second display becomes additional workspace: you can keep one window on the computer’s built-in screen and move another window to the external display. Windows uses these names:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Duplicate: the same desktop appears on both screens.
  • Extend: the external display adds space beside the main desktop.
  • PC screen only: content remains on the computer’s own display.
  • Second screen only: the external display is used while the computer’s own screen is off.

The connection method matters. Microsoft’s Windows workflow in this guide uses Miracast. Apple’s equivalent troubleshooting guidance concerns AirPlay-compatible devices. A TV that accepts AirPlay is not automatically a Miracast receiver, and a Miracast display is not automatically an AirPlay receiver. Check compatibility at both ends before troubleshooting shortcuts or buying an adapter.

Check compatibility before connecting

Source computer Receiving device Technology to verify What to check
Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC TV, projector, monitor, or HDMI adapter Miracast The PC must support Miracast, Wi-Fi must be enabled, and the receiver must be discoverable.
Windows PC Another Windows PC Windows wireless projection using Miracast The receiving PC may need the Wireless Display optional feature and its receiving app configured under Settings > System > Projecting to this PC.
Mac Apple TV, compatible smart TV, or another AirPlay receiver AirPlay The receiver must support AirPlay. Apple recommends powered, nearby devices with current software on the same Wi-Fi network.

Hardware support is not guaranteed by the computer’s operating-system version alone. Wireless display discovery can also depend on graphics drivers, Wi-Fi drivers, firmware, network conditions, and the receiver’s settings.

Before you begin, identify which device is sending the picture and which is receiving it. A TV may have several wireless features with similar names, while a Windows PC may expose a receiving feature only after an optional component is installed. Record the model names and operating-system versions if you need to troubleshoot or contact the manufacturer. This prevents you from applying AirPlay instructions to a Miracast-only device or vice versa.

Mirror a Windows computer to a TV, projector, or monitor

Prepare the display

  1. Turn on the TV, projector, or monitor and select the input used by its wireless-display function.
  2. If the display uses a separate wireless adapter, connect the adapter to an HDMI input and provide its required power.
  3. Open the receiver’s screen-mirroring or wireless-display mode if it does not appear automatically. The label varies by manufacturer.

A display that lacks built-in Miracast can use a Miracast adapter connected through HDMI. Confirm that the adapter and your Windows PC support the same wireless-display standard before purchasing one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leave the receiver on its pairing or wireless-display screen while connecting. Some receivers advertise themselves only in that mode, and a receiver that is asleep, still starting, or displaying a different source may not be discoverable. If the receiver asks you to approve a connection, keep that prompt visible until Windows completes pairing.

Start the wireless connection

  1. On the Windows computer, make sure Wi-Fi is turned on. The computer does not necessarily need internet access, but its wireless hardware must be available for Miracast.
  2. Press Windows key + K. Windows opens the available wireless-display list.
  3. Select the TV, projector, monitor, or adapter by name.
  4. Accept any pairing or permission prompt shown on either device.
  5. After the connection is established, press Windows key + P and select the screen mode you need.

If the target does not appear in the list, leave the list open while checking the receiver’s discoverability setting. Some displays stop advertising themselves when they are asleep or showing another input.

The list in Windows is a discovery list, not a guarantee that every nearby screen can receive video. A Bluetooth speaker, ordinary Wi-Fi device, or display that supports a different casting protocol will not necessarily appear or accept a Miracast session. Verify the protocol before repeatedly attempting to pair.

Choose Duplicate or Extend

Use Duplicate for a presentation or when everyone must see exactly what is on the laptop. Use Extend when you want the external display to provide a second workspace. In Extend mode, move a window to the other screen by dragging it past the edge of the current desktop; the arrangement can be adjusted in Windows display settings after the connection is made.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PC screen only and Second screen only are useful when you want to stop driving one panel without disconnecting the wireless link. They do not change the Miracast pairing itself.

Project to another Windows PC

A Windows laptop can use another Windows computer as the receiving display, but the receiving machine must be prepared first. Microsoft’s labels differ slightly between Windows 11 and Windows 10.

Configure the receiving PC

  1. On the receiving computer, open Settings > System > Projecting to this PC.
  2. Install the Wireless Display optional feature if Windows says it is missing. Windows 11 uses the Wireless Display app; Windows 10 commonly uses the Connect app.
  3. Open the receiving app and set projection permissions so the PC can be discovered. The available choices determine whether any device, only secure networks, or only specifically authorized devices may connect.
  4. Keep the receiving app open while you initiate the connection from the sending computer.

Connect the sending PC

  1. On the sending computer, press Windows key + K.
  2. Select the receiving PC from the device list.
  3. Approve the request on the receiving computer if prompted.
  4. Press Windows key + P and choose Duplicate or Extend.

Feature names and app names vary by Windows release. If a current Windows 11 installation does not show the Wireless Display feature, use the Optional features area in Settings to search for it, then restart the receiving app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Projection permissions are a deliberate part of this setup. A receiver configured for restricted access may not accept an otherwise compatible sender, while a receiver configured to allow any device may be easier to discover. After a test, return the receiving PC to the permission level appropriate for the environment rather than leaving an unnecessary open setting.

When Windows cannot find the display

Work through these checks in order. A missing device is usually a compatibility, power, discoverability, driver, or radio-condition problem rather than a problem with the Windows key combination.

1. Confirm Miracast support

Verify that the sending PC and the receiver both support Miracast. If the TV or projector does not, use a compatible Miracast adapter on an HDMI input or choose a wired connection. Do not assume that a generic wireless or Bluetooth receiver can accept a Miracast video stream.

2. Turn on Wi-Fi and bring devices closer

Enable Wi-Fi on the PC even if the computer normally uses Ethernet. Make sure the display or adapter is powered and within a practical radio range. A receiver that is powered off, asleep, or still booting cannot appear in the Windows device list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Make the receiver discoverable

For a TV or projector, open its wireless-display mode. For a Windows receiving PC, open the Wireless Display or Connect app and review Settings > System > Projecting to this PC. A receiver configured to reject projection requests may be invisible or may appear but refuse the connection.

  • App Limitations: Please be aware that certain apps with "HDCP" protocol, such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Videos, Hulu, Comcast TV, Xfinity, Vudu, Sky Go, BT Sport, may not be supported due to copyright protection.

4. Update drivers and firmware

Check the computer’s Wi-Fi and graphics drivers and the display or adapter firmware. Miracast relies on the graphics and wireless stacks; an outdated driver can prevent discovery or cause a connection that drops immediately.

5. Restart both ends

Restart the Windows computer and power-cycle the display or adapter. After both devices finish starting, open the receiver mode first and press Windows key + K again.

6. Remove and reconnect the display

If Windows previously paired with the receiver but now fails, remove the saved wireless display from Windows Bluetooth and device settings, restart, and pair it again. This clears stale pairing information without changing the receiver’s firmware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Separate discovery from performance

If the display appears but the picture is unstable, discovery is working; focus on radio conditions, drivers, and graphics capability. If it never appears, continue checking Miracast support, receiver discoverability, and Wi-Fi before changing resolution or presentation mode.

8. Test one change at a time

After each change, reopen the receiver mode and try Windows key + K. Testing compatibility, then power and discoverability, then drivers and firmware makes it clear which change helped. Changing several settings at once can hide the actual cause and make it harder to restore a known-working configuration.

Mirror a Mac with AirPlay

Mac screen mirroring uses AirPlay-compatible receivers rather than the Windows Miracast workflow. Apple’s current troubleshooting guidance emphasizes conditions that allow AirPlay discovery and playback:

  • Keep the Mac and receiving device powered on and near each other.
  • Install current software updates on both devices.
  • Connect both devices to the same Wi-Fi network.
  • Enable AirPlay receiving on the TV, Apple TV, or other receiver when its settings require that.
  • Restart the Mac and receiver if the target does not appear.

Apple changes menu labels as macOS versions evolve, and the available source for this guide does not establish a single, version-safe sequence of Mac menu names. Use the current AirPlay controls documented for your macOS release rather than applying the Windows Windows key + K or Windows key + P shortcuts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Same-network status is a practical first check, but it does not make an incompatible receiver AirPlay-capable. Confirm the receiver’s AirPlay support and its receiving setting before changing network options. Keeping both devices powered and nearby also helps distinguish a discovery problem from a general network problem.

Do not confuse Mac-to-TV AirPlay with iPhone Mirroring. AirPlay can show an iPhone screen or streamed video on a compatible receiver, while iPhone Mirroring is an interactive feature that lets a Mac control an iPhone. Apple states that iPhone Mirroring is currently unavailable in the European Union. That regional limitation does not mean that ordinary Mac screen mirroring to an AirPlay receiver is unavailable there.

Wireless versus wired connections

Choice Advantages Requirements and trade-offs
Miracast wireless display No direct video cable between the computer and display; convenient for compatible TVs, projectors, and monitors. Both ends need compatible Miracast support, discovery must work, and Wi-Fi, drivers, firmware, and radio interference affect reliability.
AirPlay wireless display Natural option when the Mac and receiver are in Apple’s AirPlay ecosystem. The receiver must support AirPlay; same-network configuration, current software, receiver settings, and proximity matter.
HDMI or another wired video path A direct cable avoids wireless discovery and radio interference. The correct cable or adapter depends on the computer’s video output and the display’s input. No single connector or adapter is universal.

Choose a wired path when the computer and display are close and you know their ports, or when a wireless connection is unreliable. Before buying a cable or computer-specific adapter, identify the exact output on the computer and input on the display; the available evidence does not support naming one connector as universally correct.

Wireless is convenient when a cable run is impractical, but it adds a discovery step and depends on radio conditions. Wired is simpler only after the ports are identified correctly. Neither choice should be made from the TV brand or computer operating system alone: match the source output or protocol to the receiver input or protocol.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What determines wireless picture quality

Wireless projection quality is affected by more than the advertised capability of the TV. Microsoft’s manufacturer guidance identifies Wi-Fi, graphics, audio, and driver characteristics as important parts of the Miracast path. Multi-band Wi-Fi can help, and the 5 GHz band generally offers more bandwidth and less interference when conditions and device support make it available.

Graphics-driver and encoding support also matter. A computer may discover a receiver successfully yet show delayed video, dropped frames, or intermittent audio if its graphics stack, wireless driver, or the surrounding radio environment cannot sustain the stream.

These factors are engineering considerations, not guarantees of a particular resolution, operating distance, refresh rate, or latency. Avoid treating a wireless adapter’s headline specification as a promise that every computer and display will perform identically.

A useful diagnostic distinction is whether the failure occurs before or after the picture appears. No listing usually indicates support, power, discoverability, or driver trouble. A picture that connects and then stutters points more toward Wi-Fi conditions, graphics capability, encoding support, or firmware. That distinction tells you where to spend effort instead of repeatedly pairing the same devices.

  • The Windows computer supports Miracast.
  • The adapter accepts Miracast rather than only another casting protocol.
  • The display has a compatible HDMI input and can supply or accept the adapter’s required power arrangement.
  • The adapter’s firmware and setup process are still supported by its maker.
  • Your expected use tolerates wireless variability; no adapter can eliminate driver, interference, or distance limits.

If your computer or display cannot support the required wireless protocol, an adapter for the wrong standard will not solve the problem. In that case, identify compatible wired ports or replace the receiver with one that explicitly supports the source computer’s protocol.

Do not select an adapter solely because its packaging says “casting” or “wireless display.” Confirm that Miracast is listed, then check the computer, HDMI input, power arrangement, and current firmware support. Compatibility is a two-ended requirement: adding an adapter to the display cannot compensate for a source PC that lacks the required Miracast support.

Windows lifecycle note

Microsoft states that support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. The Windows 10 connection flow may still be present on an existing installation, but security updates and feature behavior are governed by Microsoft’s lifecycle policy. For a maintained setup, check the current Windows version and Microsoft’s latest wireless-display documentation before standardizing a procedure across multiple computers.

A quick decision checklist

  • Need the same image on both screens? Connect with the platform’s supported wireless protocol, then choose Duplicate on Windows.
  • Need more desktop space? Choose Extend after connecting.
  • Using Windows with a TV? Verify Miracast, turn on Wi-Fi, open the receiver, press Windows key + K, and select it.
  • Using one Windows PC as the display? Configure Settings > System > Projecting to this PC and install Wireless Display where required.
  • Using a Mac? Verify AirPlay compatibility, same-network status, current software, receiver settings, and proximity.
  • Nothing appears? Check protocol support, power, discoverability, drivers, firmware, and restarts before changing display modes.
  • No wireless support? Consider a Miracast adapter for a Windows setup or a correctly matched wired connection after checking the actual ports.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Duplicate and Extend in Windows?

Duplicate shows the same desktop on both screens. Extend turns the external display into additional desktop space, so windows can be placed on either screen. Use Windows key + P to switch modes.

Why does my TV not appear after I press Windows key + K?

Confirm that both the PC and TV support Miracast, Wi-Fi is enabled, the TV is powered and in its wireless-display mode, and the receiver is discoverable. Then check drivers and firmware, restart both devices, and remove and reconnect any stale saved display.

Can I mirror Windows to another Windows computer?

Yes. On the receiving PC, open Settings > System > Projecting to this PC, install the Wireless Display optional feature if needed, open the Wireless Display or Connect app, and allow discovery. From the sending PC, press Windows key + K and select the receiver.

Do a Mac and Windows PC use the same wireless mirroring method?

No. The Windows workflow uses Miracast, while Apple’s workflow uses AirPlay-compatible receivers. A device supporting one protocol does not automatically support the other.

Does a Miracast adapter guarantee smooth video?

No. Performance also depends on Wi-Fi conditions, graphics and encoding support, drivers, firmware, distance, and interference. An adapter can add Miracast reception to an HDMI display but cannot remove those limits.

What should I check before buying a wireless display adapter or cable?

For an adapter, verify Miracast support on the Windows PC, Miracast compatibility on the adapter, the display’s HDMI input, power requirements, and current firmware support. For a cable or wired adapter, identify the computer’s exact video output and the display’s input; no connector is universal.

Is iPhone Mirroring the same as mirroring a Mac to a TV?

No. AirPlay can show an iPhone screen or video on a compatible receiver, while iPhone Mirroring is an interactive Mac feature for controlling an iPhone. Apple says iPhone Mirroring is currently unavailable in the European Union; that does not by itself prevent ordinary Mac-to-TV AirPlay.

The Bottom Line

Start by matching the protocol: Miracast for a supported Windows setup and AirPlay for a supported Mac setup. Power and open the receiver, connect with the platform’s discovery control, then choose Duplicate or Extend on Windows. If discovery fails, check compatibility, Wi-Fi, receiver settings, drivers, firmware, and restarts in that order. A Miracast HDMI adapter can add reception to a compatible display, while a wired connection requires matching the computer’s actual output to the display’s input.
