Yes—you can move most passwords from a paid manager to a free one, but a one-click import rarely preserves everything. The safest method is to create and test the new vault first, export the richest format your old manager supports, import it, verify special items such as passkeys and one-time codes, and only then close the paid account. Treat every CSV or other unencrypted export as a temporary copy of your entire digital identity.
What a password-manager migration actually moves
A migration transfers records from one vault format to another. Basic usernames and passwords usually import well. Other data—passkeys, time-based one-time passwords (TOTPs), secure notes, identities, payment cards, attachments, folders, custom fields and shared collections—depends on both the export format and the destination’s importer.
Generic CSV is widely supported but usually contains readable text and a limited set of columns. A native or encrypted interchange format can preserve more structure. For example, 1Password 8 offers 1PUX and CSV; 1PUX captures more data than CSV. KeePass and KeePassXC can use KDBX, XML or CSV, and KDBX is encrypted and can be protected with a password or key file. Dashlane’s Credential Exchange can carry passwords, passkeys and verification codes between participating managers, but it works only where both sides support that exchange.
Assume that anything not explicitly confirmed after import needs a manual check. A successful “import complete” message means the file was parsed, not that every item survived unchanged.

Choose and create the free destination first
Set up the new manager before exporting the old vault. Install its desktop and mobile apps, create the account or local database, sign in on the devices you use, and confirm that you can unlock the vault. This gives you a safe place to test the imported data while the paid subscription remains active.

Choose cloud sync if you need the same vault on phones, browsers and computers without maintaining your own file-sharing process. Choose KeePassXC if keeping the database under your control matters more than convenience and you understand how to synchronize an encrypted KDBX file without creating conflicting copies.
Prepare both managers before exporting
- Update both applications. Importers and export formats change. Update the old manager and the destination app before creating the export.
- Confirm access. Sign in to the old vault, verify the master password, and make sure recovery methods are available. Do the same for the new account or database.
- Make an inventory. Note the number of logins, folders or collections, secure notes, identities, cards, OTP entries, passkeys, attachments and shared items. This becomes your verification checklist.
- Stop automatic handling of an unencrypted export. Pause cloud backup, photo syncing, indexing or other software that could copy a CSV or JSON file. 1Password specifically advises turning off backup software before exporting because anyone with access to the file can read the passwords.
- Plan a private working location. Export to an encrypted local disk or a restricted folder, not a shared desktop, removable drive that you lend out, email account or messaging app.
- Keep the paid account active. Do not cancel until you have tested sign-in and recovery on every important device and website.
Export the richest format your old manager offers
LastPass
LastPass commonly exports a CSV file. CSV is convenient because many destinations accept it, but it is normally plaintext. Save it only in your protected working location, do not open it in a spreadsheet that automatically uploads documents, and never leave it in a downloads folder longer than necessary.
1Password
1Password 8 offers 1PUX or CSV. Prefer 1PUX when the destination supports it because it carries more data than CSV. A CSV export is a fallback for a generic importer, not an equivalent backup of every vault feature. 1Password warns that anyone with access to exported data files can read the passwords.

Passkeys require special attention: 1Password states that passkeys need to be created again on each website after export. Plan to sign in with another recovery method, remove the old passkey only after the new one works, and enroll a replacement passkey in the destination manager or device.
Dashlane
Dashlane can provide a CSV, a password-protected archive and Credential Exchange. Use Credential Exchange when the destination participates and the exchange explicitly lists the fields you need. It can include passwords, passkeys and verification codes between participating managers. If the destination accepts only CSV, expect to verify passkeys and verification codes manually.
KeePass or KeePassXC
KeePass and KeePassXC support KDBX, XML and CSV in relevant export and import workflows. Prefer KDBX when the destination accepts it: the database is encrypted and can be protected with a password or key file. XML and CSV interchange files may be unencrypted, so treat them like exposed credentials and delete them immediately after use.

- Sign in to the Bitwarden web vault or the supported account interface.
- Open the Import page.
- Select the old manager and the exact format you exported, such as the matching native format or generic CSV.
- Choose the export file and start the import. If the importer requests a password for an encrypted archive or KDBX file, enter it locally rather than converting the file to plaintext first.
- Wait for the completion message, then inspect the item count and folders before deleting the source file.
Bitwarden’s importer supports major password-manager sources, but the mapping is format-specific. A field that has no destination equivalent may be placed in notes, omitted, or imported with a different item type. Compare a sample from every category rather than checking only the first few logins.

Import into Proton Pass
- Open Proton Pass account settings.
- Choose Import.
- Select the old manager when it is listed, or choose the generic CSV option.
- Upload the export and let the import finish before closing the settings page.
- Open imported items on both desktop and mobile to confirm that fields, folders and autofill behave as expected.
Proton Pass’s free plan lists unlimited logins, notes and credit cards and unlimited devices, but those plan limits do not guarantee that every source-specific object will map perfectly. Verify OTPs, passkeys, attachments and shared data individually.
Import into KeePassXC
Use KeePassXC when you want a local database rather than a hosted vault. Create a new KDBX database with a strong database password; add a key file only if you can back it up safely and understand that losing it can make the database unrecoverable. Import the source format supported by your version, then save and close the database before copying it to another device.
A local database still needs a synchronization plan. Use one controlled, encrypted location and avoid editing separate copies on different devices. Make a backup before each major merge, and check the database’s modified time and item count after synchronization. If you cannot maintain that process, a managed cloud vault is less error-prone.
Verify the migration before cancelling the paid account
Verification should be a deliberate test, not a quick glance at the item count. Use your inventory and sample records from every folder or collection, including the oldest and newest entries.

- Logins: Open important websites and test autofill, username, password and saved URLs. Check that duplicate entries were not silently merged.
- Secure notes: Confirm multiline text, formatting, recovery codes and other sensitive notes.
- Identities: Check names, addresses, phone numbers and custom fields used by checkout forms.
- Payment cards: Verify card numbers, expiration dates, security codes and billing addresses. Do not assume a card imported as a login is classified correctly.
- Folders and collections: Confirm that organization and shared access still match your needs.
- One-time codes: Generate a current code and use it to sign in to a test service. Generic CSV imports often do not preserve OTP secrets in a usable way.
- Passkeys: Test each critical website. If the old manager exported only a record or identifier, enroll a new passkey on the site; do not expect the old private key to be recreated automatically.
- Attachments: Open documents and images. Bitwarden notes that KeePass attachments must be uploaded individually.
- Shared items and Sends: Recreate sharing arrangements and Bitwarden Sends where necessary; Bitwarden says Sends are not carried over as ordinary imported records.
- Devices and recovery: Lock and unlock the destination on every phone, tablet and computer, and test account recovery before removing the old manager.
For high-value accounts, perform a real sign-in after import rather than relying only on a preview. Keep the old vault available until those tests pass.
What usually does not transfer cleanly

Delete exposed exports and retire the paid account safely
- Close the export in every application.
- Delete CSV, JSON, XML, archive and temporary files from the working folder.
- Empty the operating system’s recycle bin or trash.
- Check downloads, recent files, temporary directories, sync folders and backup queues for additional copies.
- Resume backup or sync only after the unencrypted export is gone.
- Keep the paid account active through at least one complete sign-in and recovery test on each important device.
- When satisfied, remove the old vault or cancel the subscription according to that service’s account controls. Export a final encrypted backup of the new vault if your destination supports one.
Keeper explicitly advises deleting an export after import, and KeePassXC warns that CSV and several interchange formats are unencrypted. Deleting the visible file is not enough if a backup or sync service already copied it; inspect those locations as well.
Troubleshoot the common failure modes
The importer rejects the file
Confirm that you selected the exact source and format, not merely “CSV.” Re-export with the latest version of the old app, save locally, and try again. For an encrypted archive or KDBX file, supply its password or key file. Do not convert an encrypted database to plaintext unless the destination has no other option and you can securely destroy the temporary copy.
The item count is lower than expected
Compare your inventory by category. Some managers exclude trash, shared collections, attachments, passkeys or unsupported item types from a standard export. Export those categories separately if the old manager provides a dedicated option, then recreate them manually.

Fields are in the wrong place
Open the destination’s item editor and look for an “additional,” “custom” or notes section. If an essential field was flattened into notes, recreate it in the correct field so autofill works. Keep the original record until you have tested the corrected one.
Autofill works on one device but not another
Confirm that the destination app, browser extension and mobile autofill service are installed and signed in to the same account or database. Unlock the vault, select the correct identity, and test a site whose login you know. A local KeePassXC database requires that the current KDBX file is available on the device; it will not sync automatically.
A passkey or OTP no longer works
Use the old manager or another recovery method while it remains available. Sign in to the website, add a new passkey or authenticator secret in the destination, test it in a private session, and only then remove the old credential. Save recovery codes in the destination’s secure notes if they were not imported.

- Choose Bitwarden or Proton Pass when you need unlimited basic storage on a free tier, automatic cross-device access and a documented import workflow.
- Choose KeePassXC when local ownership of the database is the priority and you are prepared to secure synchronization and backups yourself.
- Use the richest interchange format available when preserving structure matters: 1PUX over CSV for 1Password 8, KDBX over XML or CSV for KeePass-family databases, and Credential Exchange where Dashlane and the destination both support the required fields.
- Budget manual work for passkeys, OTPs, attachments, shared records and custom fields regardless of the destination.
The migration is complete only when the new vault can unlock on your devices, important websites accept its credentials, special items have been tested, and every temporary export has been removed.
