Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
Move a Minecraft server by shutting down the old instance cleanly, making a complete backup, transferring an archive, installing compatible server software on the new host, restoring the world and configuration, and testing with a real client before changing the address players use. Keep the old server and an untouched backup until the new instance has passed every check.
What a complete migration preserves
A Minecraft server is more than its main world folder. A reliable move carries the world data, server settings, player identity files, extensions, and any services that make the existing setup work. The safest source for the migration is the entire server directory immediately after a clean shutdown.
Recommended Free Tools
- Every world directory, including the configured Java world and the Bedrock folder named by
level-name. server.properties, startup scripts, and any host-specific launch settings you need to recreate.- Java plugins or mods, their configuration files, datapacks, and resource packs.
- Bedrock
behavior_packsandresource_packswhen the world uses them. - Whitelist or allow-list data, permissions, operator records, and ban lists.
- Proxy, voice-chat, map, scheduled-task, or other auxiliary configuration that belongs to the server.
Copying only a folder named “world” can make the terrain appear while silently losing inventories, permissions, datapacks, plugin settings, or the Nether and End dimensions. Treat the complete directory as the migration unit, then selectively review settings that must change for the new host.
Plan the move before stopping players
Record the old server’s identity
Write down whether the server is Java Edition or Bedrock Dedicated Server, the Minecraft version, the server implementation, the Java runtime required by a Java server, the listening port, and the address players currently use. Record the configured world name, difficulty, game mode, online-mode setting, maximum players, view distance, tick distance, and allow-list status. This gives you a comparison sheet for the restored instance rather than relying on memory.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
Inventory extensions and dependencies
List every plugin, mod, datapack, resource pack, behavior pack, proxy, map renderer, voice service, and scheduled task. Note its version and configuration location. A world can load successfully while an extension is missing, so this inventory is part of the acceptance test, not optional documentation.
Choose a transfer route
Use the method that matches the archive size and access available on both hosts:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Host migration tool: convenient when the destination provider can import an existing server and create a safety backup before replacing files.
- File manager: useful for smaller archives when the host supports browser upload and extraction.
- SFTP: appropriate when you need resumable, direct file transfer and both hosts expose SFTP access.
- Cloud storage: compress the server directory, upload the archive, download it on the destination, and remove the cloud copy when your retention policy allows.
- Local removable storage: practical for a very large archive when network transfer is slow, provided the drive and its contents remain protected.
Do not delete the source while copying. Keep at least one immutable backup separate from both live hosts.
Step 1: Stop the old server and create the backup
- Announce a maintenance window and prevent new players from joining. Let active players save and disconnect normally.
- Use the server console’s normal stop action (the standard Java console command is
stop) or the control panel’s stop button. Wait until the process exits and no files are still being written. - Check the console for a clean shutdown. If the process is killed while chunks or player data are being saved, the backup may contain incomplete files.
- Compress the complete server directory into an archive. Include all worlds and the files listed in the inventory, not only the currently selected world.
- Copy the archive to a second location. A backup on the old host alone is not a rollback plan if that account is cancelled or overwritten.
- Record the archive name, creation time, server version, and a quick file listing. Do not edit the only copy.
Minecraft’s Java transfer guidance describes the essential operation as copying the zipped backup to the new computer and unzipping it. The same principle applies to a hosted server: stop first, archive second, extract only on the destination.
Java Edition migration
Install a compatible foundation
On the new host, install the same server implementation and Minecraft version first. A deliberate upgrade is possible, but treat it as a separate change: verify that the world format, Java runtime, plugins, and mods support the target version before combining an upgrade with the host move. Install the Java runtime required by that server implementation, and confirm the host can launch a blank instance.

Starting the destination once creates the expected directory structure and exposes runtime or permission errors before you risk the real world. Stop that test instance before restoring files.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Upload and extract the archive
- Open the destination host’s file manager, SFTP account, or migration tool.
- Upload the zipped server archive to a location with enough free space for both the compressed file and the extracted directory.
- Extract the archive without changing filenames or nesting the server inside an unexpected extra directory.
- Set the destination startup command or control-panel path to the restored server directory.
- Check ownership and permissions if the host is self-managed; the account running Minecraft must be able to read and write world, player, log, and configuration files.
Restore the world and settings
Place the unzipped world folder where the server expects it and make its name match the level-name value in server.properties. Preserve the original server.properties unless a destination-specific value must change. Reinstall or restore plugins and mods, then copy their configuration files, datapacks, and resource packs into the corresponding directories. Keep whitelist data, permissions, operators, and bans with the server files.
Review these settings before the first real start:
level-name, so the server opens the intended world rather than generating a new one.- Port and network binding, so the destination is reachable on the address you plan to publish.
- Online-mode, which affects account authentication and must match your intended operating model.
- Difficulty and game mode, so gameplay does not change at cutover.
- Maximum players, view distance, and any performance settings supported by the destination.
- Plugin and mod versions, including dependencies and configuration paths.
Run a Java acceptance test
Start the restored server privately and watch the console for missing files, failed dependencies, datapack errors, resource-pack warnings, or authentication problems. Join with an operator account and check the actual world rather than stopping at a successful process start.
- Spawn location, player locations, inventories, ender chests, and experience.
- Overworld, Nether, and End dimensions, including portals and known builds.
- Movement, block placement, redstone, farms, and scheduled mechanisms.
- Commands, operator privileges, ordinary-player permissions, and the whitelist.
- Each important plugin or mod, especially protections, economy, claims, maps, voice chat, and automation.
Have a non-operator account connect as well. Many permission and access errors are invisible when testing only with an operator.
Bedrock Dedicated Server migration
Create the destination directories
Start Bedrock Dedicated Server once on the new host so it creates its standard folders and configuration files. Stop it before copying the existing world. Microsoft’s Bedrock documentation states that a world running on another machine must be copied to the machine where Dedicated Server runs.

Copy the world into worlds/
- Compress the existing Bedrock world folder and transfer it with the file manager, SFTP, cloud storage, or another method available to both machines.
- Extract the folder into the destination server’s
worlds/directory. Preserve the folder’s contents and avoid adding an extra level of nesting. - Use a simple folder name without special characters. The folder name must be used exactly as the world identifier.
- Open
server.propertiesand setlevel-nameto that restored folder name. - Copy
allowlist.json, permissions, resource packs, behavior packs, and the remaining server properties from the old instance.
Microsoft recommends compressing a Bedrock world for transfer, including through cloud storage, then extracting it into worlds/ and matching level-name. If the names do not match, the server can start with a new world or fail to open the intended one.
Review Bedrock settings
Before starting, compare the server port, online-mode, maximum players, view distance, tick distance, and allow-list settings. Confirm that every behavior pack and resource pack referenced by the world exists on the destination and that its configuration was copied with the world.
allowlist.json stores permitted players. If you edit it directly while the server is running, use the server’s allow-list reload operation so the process recognizes the change; otherwise stop and start the server after the edit.
Run a Bedrock client test
Start the server and connect from a real Bedrock client on the network you intend to support. Verify the expected spawn, player locations, inventories, dimensions, portals, permissions, packs, and allow-list behavior. Test with both an administrator and an ordinary player account.
What to compare before the first public start
| Area | Old instance | Destination check |
|---|---|---|
| Edition | Java or Bedrock | Must match the clients and world format you are moving |
| Server implementation | Document the exact implementation | Install the same implementation, or validate a planned upgrade separately |
| Minecraft version | Record the running version | Use a compatible version before opening the world |
| Runtime | Java runtime for Java servers | Install the runtime required by the selected server build |
| World selection | Configured world name | Folder and level-name must match |
| Gameplay | Difficulty and game mode | Match unless a change is intentional |
| Network | Port and public address | Open and route the destination port correctly |
| Access | Whitelist/allow-list, operators, permissions, bans | Restore and test administrator and ordinary-player access |
| Extensions | Plugins, mods, packs, datapacks | Restore compatible versions and their configuration |
Cutover: switching players to the new host
- Keep the old server stopped so it cannot diverge from the tested backup.
- Complete the private acceptance test and inspect logs for missing files, pack errors, and authentication failures.
- Confirm that the destination address, port, firewall, and host networking are ready for players.
- Change the DNS record or publish the new address only after the test succeeds. If DNS is involved, tell players that cached records can delay the change.
- Monitor the first player sessions and console output. Watch for permission, performance, or plugin errors that a short private test did not trigger.
- Retain the old host and at least one untouched backup until players have accepted the new server and you are confident rollback is unnecessary.
For a large community, schedule the final archive immediately before cutover, announce the exact maintenance window, and do not reopen the old instance after that final backup. Running both copies creates two authoritative versions of player progress.

Managed host or self-managed VPS?
The migration method changes the amount of operational work, not the need for a clean backup and validation.
| Decision factor | Managed host | Self-managed VPS |
|---|---|---|
| File control | File manager, SFTP, or provider import may be available | Full filesystem control, including your own archive and extraction process |
| Manual work | Migration assistance can reduce extraction and setup work | You handle runtime, launch settings, permissions, firewall, backups, and updates |
| Downtime | Potentially shorter when an import tool is provided | Depends on your transfer speed and preparation |
| Mods and plugins | Confirm supported server types and upload limits | Broad control, but compatibility and maintenance are your responsibility |
| Rollback | Depends on provider snapshots and retention | You must maintain independent archives or snapshots |
| Support | Provider can help with account-level migration issues | You troubleshoot operating-system, network, and server-process problems |
Choose the managed route when reducing manual extraction and runtime administration matters most. Choose a VPS when you need control over the operating system, networking, automation, or unusual server software and are prepared to maintain it.
Troubleshooting after restoration
The server generates a new world
Stop the process immediately to avoid writing progress into the wrong world. Check that the restored folder is in the correct directory, that its name exactly matches level-name, and that the server account can read the folder. For Java, verify the world folder was not placed one directory too deep inside the extracted archive. For Bedrock, verify the folder is directly under worlds/ and uses a simple name.
The server starts but plugins, mods, or packs fail
Read the startup log for the first missing dependency or incompatible version. Confirm that the extension files and configuration directories were copied, then compare versions with the old instance and the destination Minecraft version. Do not assume a successful world load means every extension loaded.
Players lose permissions or cannot join
Restore whitelist or allow-list files, operator data, permissions, and bans. Check online-mode and authentication-related messages. Test with an ordinary account, not only an operator, and reload an edited Bedrock allow-list or restart the server as appropriate.

The destination is unreachable
Verify the listening port, firewall rules, host networking, and the address announced to players. Test from an external client rather than only from the host itself. A successful local console start does not prove that the public route is correct.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Only recent progress is missing
Recheck the shutdown procedure and archive timestamp. If the old process was terminated before saving completed, restore the latest clean backup instead of repeatedly copying a potentially incomplete live directory. Keep the old host untouched while comparing archives.
Rollback and retention plan
A migration is not complete when the new process starts; it is complete when you can recover from a failed cutover. Keep the original archive immutable, retain the old host in a stopped state, and document which copy is authoritative. If testing reveals corruption or incompatible extensions, point players back to the old address, preserve the failed destination for diagnosis, and correct the problem from a fresh copy rather than overwriting your only backup.
Once the new server has passed gameplay, access, and connectivity checks over the period your community considers acceptable, create a new backup from the destination. Only then should you cancel the old service or remove its files.
