Do not plan a direct in-place upgrade from Windows Server 2012 or 2012 R2 to Windows Server 2022. Microsoft’s supported-path table does not list one. Treat the project as a workload-by-workload modernization: build a patched Windows Server 2022 target, migrate each role with its supported procedure, test it, and cut over with a measured rollback plan. Use an in-place upgrade only when the specific source, target, edition, language, architecture, role, hardware and vendor support all qualify.
What the supported upgrade paths actually allow
Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2 are not equivalent in Microsoft’s upgrade matrix. Windows Server 2012 is shown as upgradeable to Windows Server 2016, but not directly to Windows Server 2019 or 2022. Windows Server 2012 R2 is shown as upgradeable to Windows Server 2016 and 2019, but not directly to 2022. That means a 2012-to-2022 or 2012 R2-to-2022 in-place project is not a supported direct path. Do not assume that chaining several in-place upgrades creates a supported route; select a migration or clean-install design unless Microsoft’s current matrix explicitly lists the source and destination.
| Source operating system | Destinations shown in Microsoft’s supported-path table | Direct Windows Server 2022 in-place upgrade? |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Server 2012 | Windows Server 2016 | No |
| Windows Server 2012 R2 | Windows Server 2016 and Windows Server 2019 | No |
The support deadline is another reason to avoid postponing the design. Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 support ended on October 10, 2023. Windows Server 2022 started its lifecycle on August 18, 2021; mainstream support ended on October 14, 2026, while extended support is scheduled through October 15, 2031. Windows Server 2012 R2 Extended Security Updates Year 3 is listed through October 13, 2026. Extended support or ESU can buy time, but it does not turn an unsupported direct upgrade into a supported one.

| Method | Use it when | What happens to hardware and data | Downtime and rollback considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Side-by-side migration | The role is unsupported for in-place upgrade, new hardware is desired, Active Directory Domain Services is involved, or staged testing matters. | Build a new Windows Server 2022 system, copy or transfer the role and data, then cut over. | Allows rehearsal and quick return to the old server if it remains intact and recoverable. Cutover downtime depends on the role. |
| Clean installation | You are replacing hardware, removing accumulated configuration, or starting a new application platform. | The 2022 operating system is installed from scratch and workloads are restored or migrated. | Usually requires a planned cutover, but provides the cleanest target and simplest long-term support state. |
| In-place upgrade | Only an eligible, nonclustered role has a supported source-to-target path and matching edition, language and architecture, with vendor approval. | The operating system, roles, settings and data remain on the same server. | Requires a maintenance window and reboot. A failed upgrade can leave the original server unusable, so recovery must be proven first. |
| Cluster operating-system rolling upgrade | A supported failover-cluster workload meets the cluster-specific prerequisites. | Cluster nodes are upgraded in sequence using the cluster procedure. | Workloads can remain available according to the cluster design, but this is not a generic in-place method for standalone servers. |
Side-by-side migration is the default for a 2012-to-2022 project because it separates the new operating system from the old one. It also lets you test authentication, applications, storage and monitoring before changing production traffic.
Inventory and classify every dependency
Start with a written record for every source server. An inventory that only lists installed roles is not enough; failed migrations commonly come from an overlooked certificate, scheduled task, service account, firewall rule or hard-coded IP address.
- Record the Windows Server edition, build, 64-bit architecture, language and whether the installation uses Server Core or Desktop Experience.
- List every role and feature, including Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS), DNS, DHCP, file and storage services, Hyper-V, failover clustering and Configuration Manager.
- Document applications, versions, plug-ins, database connections, licensing, service accounts, certificates and private keys, scheduled tasks and startup services.
- Capture IP addresses, DNS records and dependencies, firewall rules, proxy settings, storage paths, shares, permissions, quotas and backup destinations.
- Record monitoring, alerting, antivirus or endpoint agents, backup jobs, replication jobs and maintenance windows.
- Ask each application vendor to confirm Windows Server 2022 support and the required migration or reinstallation procedure.
- Identify systems that depend on the server by name, address, share, service principal, certificate or database connection string.
Mark each workload as standalone, domain-dependent, clustered, virtualized or storage-dependent. AD DS, DHCP, DNS, file and storage services, Hyper-V, failover clusters and Configuration Manager each have different procedures. Microsoft also expects source and destination servers to have current updates before a role migration, so include patching in the plan rather than treating it as an afterthought.

A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a recovery plan. Before an in-place operation or a cutover, create a full backup covering the operating system, applications, data and virtual machines. Store the recovery copy away from the server being changed so a hardware failure, ransomware event or operator mistake cannot destroy both copies.
- Take an image or equivalent full backup of each source server and export application-specific data using the application’s supported method.
- Confirm that the backup includes system state where the role requires it, application data, configuration, certificates and virtual-machine files.
- Restore the backup to isolated hardware or a test environment. Verify that the system boots and that the role and a representative application transaction work.
- Record the backup timestamp, retention period, storage location, encryption key and the person authorized to start a restore.
- Define rollback triggers in advance: a failed boot, role-service failure, application transaction errors, replication or DNS failure, data-integrity errors or unacceptable performance.
Capture product keys, activation channels and the organization’s licensing entitlement. Distribution-channel rules differ, and each Windows Server upgrade requires a separate license. Verify that the 2022 edition you intend to deploy covers the required roles, virtualization rights and hardware before ordering or installing it.

Prepare and patch the Windows Server 2022 target
For a side-by-side move, install Windows Server 2022 on new or repurposed hardware, select the required edition and installation option, apply current updates, install supported drivers and join it to the appropriate management, monitoring and backup systems. Match the source’s language and architecture where a migration tool or application requires it. Do not copy an old server’s accumulated configuration blindly; recreate only what the workload needs and document each deliberate exception.
Check capacity under the expected post-migration load rather than copying the old server’s specifications. Verify CPU, memory, storage performance, network bandwidth, disk layout, firmware, virtual-switch design and backup throughput. Confirm that the target has a stable name and address plan, a time source, functioning DNS and access to required repositories. Patch both source and target before transferring roles, and schedule a final patch review immediately before cutover.

Migrate Active Directory Domain Services as a separate project
Microsoft’s recommended design is to install a clean operating system, promote new Windows Server 2022 domain controllers, validate them, and then demote the older controllers. Microsoft specifically advises against using an in-place upgrade for servers running AD DS.
Preferred domain-controller replacement sequence
- Build a patched Windows Server 2022 server with a static address and correct time configuration. Join it to the existing domain as a member server.
- Install the AD DS role and promote the server to an additional domain controller. Include DNS and the required global-catalog placement for your design.
- Allow replication to complete. Validate directory replication, DNS registration and resolution, time synchronization, authentication, SYSVOL availability and event logs.
- Repeat the process for additional 2022 domain controllers if the site or availability design requires more than one.
- Transfer FSMO roles deliberately after the new controllers are healthy. Confirm the new owners and test ordinary user and administrator logons.
- Only after validation, demote the old domain controller through the supported removal process. Check that no application, DNS client or script still points to the old host.
- Remove obsolete DNS records, monitoring entries, backup jobs and server-object references after the demotion is accepted.
If an existing domain controller must be upgraded in place, it is an exception requiring careful prerequisite work, not the default plan. Run adprep /forestprep once per forest and adprep /domainprep once per domain for the new version, following Microsoft’s prerequisites and replication checks. A tested system-state backup and a documented authoritative recovery plan are essential before changing a domain controller.
Move common infrastructure roles deliberately
DHCP
Use the supported Windows Server Migration Tools procedure for DHCP settings, scopes, reservations and server authorization. The migration matrix identifies DHCP migration as capable of no downtime, but that does not remove the need to verify lease state, scope options, failover relationships and client behavior. Test a new lease, renewal and release from representative clients before decommissioning the source.

DNS
DNS migration is supported, but the matrix does not classify it as a no-downtime operation. Transfer the zones and server settings using the supported role procedure, then test authoritative answers, forwarders, reverse lookups, dynamic registration and resolution from clients in each affected network. Keep the old service available until the new server answers correctly and all dependent systems have the intended resolver addresses.
File and storage services
Windows Server Migration Tools supports many role, feature, setting, data and share moves. Storage Migration Service can be appropriate for file and storage scenarios. Inventory shares, paths, permissions, quotas, service accounts and applications that use UNC names. Preserve the namespace or schedule a controlled alias and DNS change so applications do not retain a hidden dependency on the old address. Test reads, writes, locks, large files and backup jobs before switching users.
Hyper-V and virtual machines
Include the host operating system, virtual-machine files, virtual switches, storage paths, checkpoints, backup integration and guest licensing in the design. A full backup must include the VMs. Validate network segmentation, boot order, guest integration, application consistency and monitoring on the 2022 host before accepting production traffic.
Failover clusters
Do not treat a cluster as a collection of ordinary standalone servers. Use the supported cluster operating-system rolling-upgrade process for an eligible failover-cluster workload. Follow its compatibility checks, node sequence, role drain and validation steps. The cluster matrix and procedure determine availability and downtime; an ordinary in-place upgrade on a cluster node can break the cluster or violate support requirements.
Configuration Manager and other application roles
Identify Configuration Manager and other management platforms during inventory because they have application-specific migration and version requirements. Obtain the vendor’s Windows Server 2022 support statement, back up the application database and configuration, and test clients, agents and service accounts in an isolated or pilot group before a broad cutover.

When an in-place upgrade is genuinely eligible
An in-place upgrade can preserve settings, roles and data on the same hardware, but it is not a shortcut around compatibility. Consider it only when all of these conditions are true:
- The exact source-to-target pair appears in Microsoft’s supported upgrade path. A direct 2012 or 2012 R2 to 2022 upgrade does not.
- The server is not an AD DS domain controller being handled by the recommended replacement design.
- The role is nonclustered and supported for in-place upgrade.
- Source and target editions, languages and architectures are compatible.
- The hardware, storage controllers, drivers, applications and security agents are supported on the target release.
- The application vendor approves the procedure and a maintenance window covers the required reboot.
- A complete, off-server backup has passed a restore test and rollback triggers are agreed.
In-place execution checklist
- Freeze changes, notify users and record the final configuration and backup identifiers.
- Apply current updates and confirm adequate free space, healthy disks, supported drivers and clean event logs.
- Disconnect or disable NIC Teaming when Microsoft’s restrictions require it, and document the original team configuration for restoration.
- Start Windows Setup from supported installation media. Select the intended edition and choose the option that retains applications, files and settings only when Setup confirms that option is supported.
- Monitor the compatibility report and every reboot. Do not power off the server during the upgrade.
- After Setup completes, confirm activation, edition, build, drivers, network configuration and all expected role services before reopening access.
If Setup rejects the retention option, reports an unsupported role or exposes an edition, language or architecture mismatch, stop and redesign the move as side-by-side. Do not bypass a compatibility block merely to keep the original schedule.
Run a controlled side-by-side cutover
For most 2012 workloads, the safest sequence is to migrate one role at a time rather than changing every server during one weekend.
- Prepare: build and patch the 2022 target, install required roles and tools, create service accounts and certificates, and configure monitoring and backup.
- Transfer: use Windows Server Migration Tools or the role’s supported method to copy settings, data and shares. Use Storage Migration Service where it fits the file or storage workload.
- Rehearse: test with a pilot client, representative application transaction and realistic data set. Record timings and any manual steps.
- Freeze: stop configuration changes and, where the role requires it, pause writes or application jobs for the final synchronization.
- Cut over: change the supported name, address, DNS, DHCP, load-balancer or application connection target. Record the exact time and operator.
- Validate: execute the acceptance checklist while users or a pilot group exercise the service.
- Hold and retire: keep the old server powered off but recoverable until acceptance criteria pass and the agreed retention period expires. Do not immediately reuse its disks or addresses.
Plan downtime by role, not by operating-system version
Windows Server 2022 itself does not determine the outage. The role’s migration method and the application’s cutover behavior do.
| Workload or method | Downtime guidance | Planning implication |
|---|---|---|
| In-place upgrade | A maintenance window and reboot are required. | Include upgrade, reboot, driver initialization, service checks and application smoke tests in the window. |
| DHCP migration | The migration matrix identifies it as capable of no downtime. | Still test lease, renewal, reservations, options and authorization; keep a rollback path. |
| DNS migration | Supported, but not identified as no-downtime. | Schedule propagation and resolver testing rather than assuming an instantaneous change. |
| File and storage migration | Depends on final synchronization, open files and the namespace or share cutover. | Measure copy time, quiesce writes when required and test permissions and locks. |
| Failover-cluster rolling upgrade | Determined by the supported cluster procedure and workload draining. | Validate node and role compatibility before taking a node out of service. |
| Application workloads | Determined by database consistency, service dependencies and vendor procedure. | Use a pilot, transaction test and explicit business acceptance criteria. |
Validate the new server before declaring success
Validation should be a written checklist with an owner and pass/fail result, not an informal login test.

- Confirm the Windows Server 2022 edition, build, activation state, patch level and driver health.
- Review System and role-specific event logs for boot, storage, networking, authentication and service errors.
- Check every expected role service, startup type, service account, certificate, scheduled task and firewall rule.
- Test DNS resolution, DHCP lease and renewal behavior, file-share reads and writes, storage paths, application logons and representative business transactions.
- Verify monitoring, alert delivery, antivirus or security-agent status, backup completion and a test restore from the new server.
- For Hyper-V, test virtual switches, guest startup, storage, checkpoints and application-consistent backups.
- For AD DS, verify replication, DNS, time, SYSVOL, authentication, global-catalog availability and FSMO ownership.
- Check that clients, scripts, APIs, load balancers and management tools no longer depend on the old server unless that dependency is intentional.
Define acceptance in measurable terms, such as a successful user login, a completed application transaction, a restored file, a renewed DHCP lease or a clean replication check. Keep evidence with the change record so a later incident can be compared with the pre-migration baseline.
Rollback and failure handling
Rollback is easiest when the old workload has not been altered or decommissioned. For a side-by-side move, reverse the name, address, resolver, load-balancer or application-connection change, restore the final writes according to the role procedure, and investigate before another attempt. For an in-place upgrade, use the tested image or equivalent full backup and the documented recovery procedure; do not assume that an unsuccessful Setup run can be safely reversed by rebooting.
Trigger rollback for a failed boot, persistent role-service failure, authentication or DNS failure, application transaction errors, data-integrity concerns, replication faults or performance outside the agreed threshold. Preserve logs and the failed target state when safe so the cause can be diagnosed. If certificates, service accounts or firewall rules are missing, correct them only when the service remains within the acceptance window; otherwise return to the known-good server and reschedule.
Common mistakes that make a migration unsafe
- Assuming 2012 can jump directly to 2022: the supported-path table does not allow it; use side-by-side or another explicitly supported design.
- Using an in-place upgrade for AD DS by default: promote new 2022 domain controllers and demote old ones instead.
- Keeping a backup that has never been restored: perform an isolated restore test and record the result.
- Ignoring edition, language or architecture differences: resolve compatibility before Setup or choose a clean target.
- Forgetting NIC Teaming restrictions: document and disable teaming when required, then restore and test the configuration after the upgrade.
- Decommissioning the source immediately: retain it powered off and recoverable until all acceptance criteria pass.
- Moving only the role: certificates, scheduled tasks, service accounts, firewall rules, monitoring and backup jobs are part of the workload.
- Treating every role as no-downtime: DHCP, DNS, file services, clusters and applications have different cutover behavior.
- Skipping vendor approval: an operating system that installs successfully can still leave an application unsupported.
A practical project sequence
For a mixed environment, sequence work by dependency and recovery impact. Establish tested backups and monitoring first. Replace domain controllers and validate authentication and DNS before moving applications that depend on them. Migrate infrastructure services such as DHCP and file storage with pilots, then move application and virtualization workloads. Handle failover clusters with their own rolling-upgrade plan. After every workload passes acceptance, update diagrams, runbooks, backup policies, monitoring, certificates and disaster-recovery documentation. This approach turns an unsupported direct upgrade request into a series of supported, testable changes with clear rollback points.
