The safest migration path for a supported ESXi environment is Proxmox VE’s integrated importer. Update Proxmox VE, add the ESXi host as an import-source storage, verify the source inventory, choose destination storage and a network bridge, and import a powered-off test VM before touching production. Proxmox documents ESXi 6.5 through 8.0 as tested import sources.

Keep the original virtual machine and a tested backup until application checks and a rollback rehearsal succeed. OVF export and disk-level conversion remain useful when the integrated importer cannot handle your storage, encryption, or source layout.

Choose the migration method first

Your choice affects downtime, configuration fidelity, guest-driver work, and rollback. Use the integrated importer when the source is a supported ESXi host and its disks are on compatible storage. Use OVF when you need a portable export or the source cannot be reached directly. Use a manual disk migration when you need precise control over controllers, firmware, or disk formats.

Method Best fit Downtime and bandwidth Configuration preservation Main trade-off
Integrated ESXi import ESXi 6.5–8.0 sources with supported datastores Copy time depends on disk size, storage speed, and network; source should be powered off for consistency Highest: Proxmox maps much of the source hardware configuration Cannot directly import documented vSAN-backed, encrypted, or VMware vTPM state
OVF export/import Portable, file-based transfer through an OVF and VMDK set Export and upload require staging capacity and additional transfer time Hardware settings may need review after import More manual handling of files and guest hardware
Disk-level/manual Unsupported source layouts or special controller and firmware requirements Usually the most operator-controlled approach; disk conversion and copying can be lengthy Lowest automatic preservation; rebuild the VM definition yourself Highest risk of boot, driver, and network misconfiguration

Match the method to the cutover

For a small number of ordinary ESXi guests, the integrated importer usually minimizes administrative handling. It reads the source configuration and lets you select the target storage and bridge in one workflow. That does not eliminate planning: every disk still has to be copied, and the source shutdown, transfer, validation, and rollback window must fit the change window.

OVF is useful when an export file is easier to move than a direct connection between environments. It also gives you a staging copy that can be retained for another import attempt. The trade-off is extra storage for the OVF descriptor and VMDKs, an additional transfer, and more opportunity to lose a setting while recreating hardware.

Manual migration is appropriate when you deliberately want to rebuild the virtual hardware or when the integrated paths do not support the source layout. Treat it as a new VM build with an existing disk: record every source setting, attach disks in the intended order, and test firmware, controllers, networking, and boot behavior independently.

Prepare the source and Proxmox VE

Update and capacity-plan Proxmox

Bring Proxmox VE to version 8 or later and apply current updates before adding the source. Confirm that target storage has enough free space for every imported disk, plus snapshots, temporary files, and the safety margin required by your backup plan. Check that the Proxmox host or cluster can sustain the expected storage and network throughput.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Estimate the transfer from the provisioned disk data, not only the guest’s used filesystem space. The import copies virtual disks, so large thin-provisioned or mostly empty disks can still require substantial time and destination capacity. Check free space before starting each task and avoid filling the target storage during a long import. If several guests are being moved, sequence them rather than assuming that concurrent copies will improve throughput; storage latency and the network path can become the limiting factors.

Inventory the source VM

Before shutdown, create a migration worksheet for each guest. Record its ESXi host and datastore, VM name and identifier, disk names and sizes, controller and bus, BIOS or UEFI mode, EFI disk if present, CPU and memory settings, NIC MAC addresses, VLAN details, snapshots, boot order, serial or console devices, and any application-specific dependencies. This record is the reference for reviewing the imported definition and for rebuilding it manually if necessary.

Also list DHCP reservations, firewall rules, load-balancer members, monitoring checks, backup jobs, licenses tied to a MAC address, and services that must start in a particular order. These dependencies are outside the disk image and will not be fixed by a successful import.

Protect rollback

  • Keep the original source VM intact; do not delete it after the first successful boot.
  • Create and verify a restorable backup before migration.
  • Define who can authorize rollback, how long the VMware copy remains available, and which DNS, DHCP, firewall, and load-balancer changes must be reversed.
  • Start with a representative non-production VM. Proxmox’s migration guidance says it is highly recommended to test one or more VMs and become familiar with the process before moving production.
  • Write down the exact source power state, destination VM ID, disk mapping, and network changes so a failed cutover can be reversed without guesswork.

Power off for a consistent copy

Shut down the source guest cleanly and confirm that the hypervisor reports it as powered off. A live copy can contain inconsistent filesystem or application state unless you have a separately engineered replication process. Record the VM’s firmware mode, disk bus, controller, CPU settings, NIC MAC addresses, VLANs, snapshots, and boot order before shutdown.

Allow the guest’s applications to finish their own shutdown procedures. Confirm that databases, queues, and mounted filesystems are clean before beginning the copy. Keep the source powered off while the destination is being validated unless you have isolated the destination network; running both identities on the same production segment can create duplicate IP, hostname, or application conflicts.

Method 1: import directly from ESXi

The integrated workflow is normally the quickest and least disruptive option for supported sources. It is still a copy operation: the source must remain available while data is read, and the import duration depends on disk size, datastore performance, and network capacity.

  1. In Proxmox VE, verify that version 8 or later and current updates are installed.
  2. Open Datacenter → Storage → Add and choose the ESXi import-source option.
  3. Enter the ESXi host address and administrator credentials. Apply the documented certificate-verification setting, or explicitly trust the certificate when your security policy permits it.
  4. Select the source storage and wait for the VM inventory to appear. If the inventory is empty, recheck credentials, certificate handling, firewall rules, and datastore visibility.
  5. Select the powered-off VM and click Import.
  6. Choose target disk storage, the destination network bridge, and any available import options. Confirm the VM’s firmware, CPU, controller, and disk assignments before starting.
  7. Start the import and monitor storage space, network throughput, and task logs. Do not power on both source and destination copies on the same production network unless you have deliberately isolated one to prevent duplicate IP or hostname conflicts.

For a batch migration, use the first imported guest to establish a repeatable review checklist. Note which source controllers map cleanly, whether the selected bridge carries the expected VLAN, and which guest drivers are required. Apply those lessons to later guests, but still review every VM because firmware, disk order, and application dependencies can differ.

Importer limits to check before scheduling

  • Snapshots: A datastore containing snapshots can make imports significantly slower. Consolidate or remove snapshots only after confirming that doing so fits your backup and rollback plan.
  • vSAN: The documented importer does not directly import VMs whose disks are backed by VMware vSAN. Move or copy those disks to another supported storage location first.
  • Encryption: Encrypted virtual disks, including storage-policy encryption, cannot be imported until encryption is removed. Preserve and verify the required decryption keys before changing policy.
  • Datastore names: Names containing special characters such as + may cause failure. Rename the datastore using a change window and update any dependent references.
  • vTPM: VMware virtual TPM state cannot currently be migrated to Proxmox VE. Record manual decryption or recovery keys and plan a replacement TPM configuration where the operating system or application requires one.

These checks should happen before the maintenance window. Discovering an encrypted disk, vSAN placement, or an unusable datastore name after shutdown turns a planned copy into an avoidable outage. If a source VM has snapshots, decide whether preserving them is part of the rollback design; removing them changes the source storage state and should be coordinated with the backup owner.

Method 2: export an OVF and import it

OVF is useful when you need a file-based handoff, an intermediate staging area, or a source that cannot be added as an import storage. Export a powered-off VM with VMware’s ovftool from ESXi or vCenter. Ensure the destination has space for the OVF descriptor, VMDK files, and any temporary copies.

  1. Shut down the guest and verify the VM is powered off.
  2. Use ovftool to export the VM from ESXi or vCenter to a staging directory.
  3. Copy the resulting OVF and VMDK files to a location reachable by the Proxmox host.
  4. Create a Proxmox VM with the intended VM ID, firmware mode, CPU model, memory, and network settings.
  5. Import the OVF with qm importovf {vmid} {VM name}.ovf {target storage}.
  6. For a standalone VMDK, use qm disk import {target VMID} {vmdk file} {target storage}, then attach the resulting disk in the VM hardware view.
  7. Review the imported hardware, select the correct boot disk, and complete the guest-driver and network checks described below.

For file-based target storage, documented formats include raw, VMDK, and qcow2. QCOW2 is QEMU/KVM’s native format, but the suitable choice depends on your storage backend, snapshot requirements, performance goals, and backup design.

Keep the OVF descriptor and all referenced VMDKs together during transfer. If you import a standalone VMDK, verify that you selected the intended disk and attached it to the correct controller; multi-disk guests can otherwise boot from the wrong volume or lose an application data disk. After the import, compare the Proxmox disk list with the source worksheet before powering on.

Method 3: convert and attach disks manually

Manual migration is the fallback when integrated import or OVF export is unsuitable. Move or convert the powered-off disks, create a matching Proxmox VM, attach the disks, and reconstruct CPU, firmware, controller, NIC, and boot settings. This gives maximum control but shifts validation responsibility to the operator.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rebuild the VM definition deliberately

  • Match BIOS or UEFI. If the source used UEFI, create an EFI disk on the intended target storage and confirm the boot order.
  • Choose a CPU model compatible with every node on which the VM may run. Use host only when cluster nodes have matching CPU models; otherwise choose a common generic x86-64 model.
  • Select a SCSI controller such as virtio-scsi-single only when the guest has the required driver. Keep an emulated controller temporarily if it is needed to boot.
  • Attach the converted disk, select the correct boot device, and preserve serial or console access for troubleshooting.

Do not optimize every device on the first boot. A conservative emulated controller or NIC can provide a recovery path while drivers are installed. Change one hardware class at a time, reboot, and record the result. Once storage and networking are stable, move to the desired VirtIO devices and repeat the validation.

Guest operating-system and hardware work after import

Windows boot and storage drivers

Windows may fail to boot when its disk controller changes at the same time as the hypervisor. If VirtIO storage drivers are not already installed, begin with the documented IDE or SATA disk-bus fallback. Boot Windows, install and validate the VirtIO drivers, shut down, then switch to the desired VirtIO controller or bus and test another reboot before production use.

Check the system from the console as well as through remote access. A remote login can fail because of networking even when the disk is healthy, while a console boot confirms whether the storage controller and boot mode are correct. After installing drivers, verify that the expected system and data volumes retain their drive letters and that scheduled services can open them.

VirtIO networking

Prefer a VirtIO network device when the guest supports it because it generally reduces emulation overhead. For an older guest without the driver, use an emulated NIC temporarily, install the driver, and then change the adapter. Windows can treat the new adapter as a different interface, so remove stale devices only after confirming the replacement works.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MAC addresses, DHCP, and bridges

Add or correct the virtual NIC and select the intended Proxmox bridge. If DHCP reservations, firewall rules, licensing, or monitoring depend on the MAC address, preserve the expected MAC or update those systems before the first production boot. Verify VLAN tagging and the guest’s IP configuration from the Proxmox host through the physical switch path.

Test both directions that matter to the application: guest-to-service traffic and service-to-guest traffic. Confirm DNS registration, default gateway reachability, firewall policy, and any load-balancer health check. If the destination is initially isolated, plan the exact point at which it will receive the production VLAN and ensure the source remains off.

Guest agent, clocks, and services

Install and configure the QEMU guest agent where appropriate. Confirm time synchronization, hostname resolution, scheduled tasks, service startup, mounted filesystems, and application dependencies. A successful login is not an application validation.

Check monitoring and backup integrations after the guest agent and network are working. Proxmox-side jobs may identify the VM by its new ID, while external systems may still reference the old name, address, or MAC. Update those references and run a test backup or restore according to the environment’s normal procedure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Production cutover checklist

  1. Run a test migration of a representative VM and document every correction required.
  2. Schedule a change window that includes shutdown, transfer, validation, and rollback time.
  3. Back up the source and record encryption, recovery, and application credentials.
  4. Power off the source, verify the final state, and start the selected import or copy.
  5. Before first boot, review CPU model, memory, firmware, EFI disk, controller, disk order, NIC, bridge, VLAN, and boot order.
  6. Boot the destination in an isolated or controlled network when duplicate identity is possible.
  7. Check console access, filesystem integrity, storage performance, network reachability, DNS, DHCP, monitoring, backups, scheduled jobs, and application transactions.
  8. Run an application-level acceptance test with the service owner.
  9. Keep the source VM powered off but recoverable until the agreed observation period and rollback rehearsal are complete.

For multiple VMs, cut over in dependency order rather than alphabetically. Record the start and end time, import task result, destination VM ID, and every corrective change. This creates an auditable handoff and makes a later rollback or second migration more predictable.

Troubleshooting common failures

The VM is not visible in the importer

Confirm that the ESXi credentials can read the selected datastore, the certificate setting is accepted, the host is reachable from Proxmox, and the VM is registered in the inventory. Check for unsupported vSAN storage, unusual datastore names, and active snapshots.

The import is unexpectedly slow

Snapshots can significantly increase work. Check datastore latency, Proxmox target capacity, and the network path between hosts. Avoid running several large imports concurrently until you know the storage and link can sustain them.

The imported guest does not boot

Verify BIOS versus UEFI, EFI-disk placement, boot order, and the selected controller. For Windows, revert temporarily to IDE or SATA, install VirtIO drivers, and switch back only after a confirmed reboot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The guest boots but has no network

Check the bridge, VLAN, link state, adapter model, driver, MAC-dependent DHCP reservation, and stale interface configuration inside the guest. Test with a temporary emulated NIC if the VirtIO driver is missing.

Encryption or TPM-dependent applications fail

Imported encrypted disks require decryption before import, and VMware vTPM state is not migrated. Locate manual recovery keys and rebuild the required Proxmox TPM arrangement according to the guest and application vendor’s requirements before decommissioning the source.

The wrong disk or controller appears

Compare the imported disk order and sizes with the source worksheet. Attach a missing disk to the intended controller, select the correct boot device, and keep an emulated path available until the guest recognizes the replacement. Do not remove the original source disk or backup while correcting the destination.

When to decommission the VMware copy

Do not delete the source merely because the destination starts. Decommission only after the guest, application, monitoring, backups, network dependencies, and restore procedure have passed acceptance testing; the rollback owner has signed off; and the retention period for the original VM has elapsed. Keep migration records containing source and destination IDs, disk mappings, firmware, CPU, NIC, bridge, driver changes, test results, and the final rollback decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I import an ESXi VM directly into Proxmox VE?

Yes. Proxmox VE’s integrated importer can connect to supported ESXi sources; the documented tested range is ESXi 6.5 through 8.0. Add the ESXi host under Datacenter → Storage → Add, verify the inventory, choose destination storage and a bridge, and import a powered-off VM.

Should I use OVF or the integrated importer?

Use the integrated importer for a supported ESXi source when its datastore is compatible. Choose OVF when you need a portable file-based transfer or direct source access is impractical; use manual disk migration when you need maximum control.

Can VMware vTPM and encrypted disks be migrated?

The documented process cannot import encrypted disks until encryption is removed, and VMware virtual TPM state cannot currently be migrated. Preserve recovery keys and plan replacement TPM settings before cutover.

Does the Proxmox importer support vSAN-backed VMs?

Not directly according to the documented importer limits. Move or copy the VM’s disks from vSAN to another supported storage location before importing.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is my imported Windows VM not booting?

A controller or firmware change can leave Windows without the required storage driver. Verify BIOS versus UEFI and boot order, use an IDE or SATA fallback if necessary, install and validate VirtIO drivers, then switch to the desired VirtIO controller and reboot-test.

How long should I keep the VMware VM after migration?

Keep it powered off but recoverable through the agreed observation period, application acceptance testing, backup and restore checks, and a rollback rehearsal. Decommission it only after the rollback owner signs off and the retention period ends.

The Bottom Line

For ESXi 6.5–8.0 on compatible storage, use Proxmox VE’s integrated importer with the source powered off, then validate firmware, controllers, VirtIO drivers, networking, applications, backups, and rollback. Use OVF or manual disk migration when source storage or configuration limits require it, and retain the VMware copy until the new VM is demonstrably recoverable.
