The safest way to move saved prompts is to treat the change as a controlled export, field-by-field mapping, import, and verification—not as a single “download everything” operation. First inventory prompts and their dependencies, preserve an untouched backup, confirm what the destination can actually import, repair fields that do not map cleanly, and test representative prompts before retiring the old manager. An account archive, a memory export, a workspace merge, and an agent-setup importer are different mechanisms with different coverage and risks.
What a prompt migration actually includes
A saved prompt is rarely just one block of text. Prompt tools and AI assistants may store several separate data classes, and an export may include some while omitting others. Make an inventory before choosing a transfer method.
Separate the data classes
- Prompt content: the instruction text, role or system message, examples, output format, and any variable syntax.
- Organization: names, folders, tags, favorites, ordering, version notes, and ownership.
- Runtime dependencies: attached files, project context, tools, connectors, plugins, shell commands, and file paths.
- Assistant state: saved memory, custom instructions, personalization, and learned preferences.
- Conversation material: chat history, example outputs, and projects that are used as reference rather than as reusable prompt records.
- Account and access settings: authentication, workspace membership, permissions, retention rules, and connected applications.
Record these categories in a simple manifest. A useful row has the prompt name, source location, full text, variables, required files or tools, example output, last revision, destination field, and migration status. This prevents a prompt that looks present in the new manager from silently losing an attachment or placeholder.
Why a full account export may not be a prompt library
Export and import are separate features. A service can give you an archive for personal records without accepting that archive as an importable prompt collection. Anthropic’s account-export instructions, for example, say exported data cannot be imported into another personal Claude account. Do not assume that a ZIP, JSON, Markdown, or CSV file is portable until the destination documentation names that exact source and item type. No universal interchange format is established across prompt managers.

Make an untouched backup first
Export or copy the source before renaming, converting, deduplicating, or pasting anything into the destination. Keep the original read-only or in a separate location. Anthropic recommends preserving memory entries and keeping a Markdown record; OpenAI likewise advises saving important content before a workspace migration.
What to preserve
- The native export, if one exists.
- A human-readable copy of every prompt, including examples and variable descriptions.
- A dependency list for files, tools, connectors, plugins, and referenced paths.
- Known-good input/output examples for high-value prompts.
- A record of tags, versions, and intended permissions.
Do not edit the only copy to fit a destination schema. If you need to normalize variables or strip unsupported metadata, create a working copy and keep the original unchanged. Retain access to the old account until validation is complete; a partial destination list is not proof that every data class has arrived.
Choose the transfer route by coverage and reversibility
Compare available routes against the material you actually need to move. The right choice may be a native importer for prompts, a manual memory transfer, a workspace merge, or a file download followed by manual reconstruction.
Recommended Free Tools
| Route | What it can cover | Main limitation or risk | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native prompt or agent importer | Supported instructions, skills, plugins, projects, and sometimes recent work | Only named source applications and item types are supported; dynamic templates need review | Moving structured setup between explicitly supported agents |
| Memory copy-and-paste import | Selected learned context or memory entries | Experimental behavior; imported items may not be incorporated | Moving assistant memory separately from prompt text |
| Account-data export | User information, chats, and other archive material defined by the service | May not be importable into another personal account | Backup, records, or analysis outside the destination |
| Workspace merge | Eligible conversations, files, projects, memories, personalization, and supported automations | Access and retention change; the source workspace may be deactivated and undo may be unavailable | Moving a personal workspace into an organization |
| Manual reconstruction from downloaded files | Prompt text and references you can inspect and recreate | Tags, versions, permissions, and runtime behavior may be lost | Products with no compatible importer |
Use five decision tests: item coverage, structure retention, compatibility of variables and tools, reversibility and access control, and whether you can inspect and test the result before committing.
Move Claude memory without confusing it with an account export
Import memory into Claude
Anthropic’s September 2, 2026 help guidance describes a separate memory-import flow for Free, Pro, Max, and Team plans on the web and Claude Desktop.
- Ask the source assistant to output its memories and learned context as copyable text. Review the output for confidential or obsolete entries.
- In Claude, open Settings > Memory > Start import.
- Paste the prepared text into the import flow and submit it.
- Review the extracted entries afterward. Correct names, dates, preferences, and instructions that were merged incorrectly.
Anthropic labels memory imports experimental and warns that Claude may not always successfully incorporate imported memories. Treat the import as a starting point, not as proof that every preference is active. Test a prompt whose behavior depends on each important memory, and keep the source list so you can re-enter an omitted item.

Export Claude account data for records
Anthropic’s July 8, 2026 instructions describe account-data exports for individual Free, Pro, and Max users. On the web or Claude Desktop, request the export through Settings > Privacy. The download link is delivered by email and expires 24 hours after delivery, so download it promptly and store it with your untouched backup.
This export is not a personal-account importer. Anthropic states that exported data cannot be imported into another personal Claude account. A separate direct migration is supported into a Team or Enterprise organization, subject to that organization’s access and retention policies. Use the export for preservation or inspection unless the destination documentation explicitly provides a compatible route.
Understand a ChatGPT personal-workspace merge before starting
OpenAI documents a native merge from a personal ChatGPT workspace into Business or Enterprise. It is broader than moving prompt text and has lasting administrative consequences.
What may transfer
The documented scope includes supported cloud conversations, eligible Library files, project settings, project instructions and files, supported personal automations, saved memories, and eligible personalization. Transfer happens by data class, so inspect each destination section rather than checking only the chat list.
What does not transfer or needs qualification
- Project-scoped memories do not transfer with saved memory.
- Memory and tool settings are not copied as personalization.
- Custom plugins do not transfer.
- Connected apps may be blocked by organization policies or require reauthentication.
- Sites do not transfer.
- Content can appear gradually, so an initially visible conversation list is not a completion signal.
Access and reversibility consequences
After the merge, the personal workspace is deactivated, the organization controls access to migrated content, and OpenAI’s guidance says there is no undo operation that moves content back into the personal workspace. Before selecting the merge, save important prompts, files, memories, and project instructions outside the account. Confirm that the destination organization’s administrators, retention rules, and offboarding process are acceptable for the material you are moving.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPost-merge checks
- Open the destination’s conversations, Library, projects, memories, personalization, and automations sections separately.
- Check that project files and instructions are attached to the correct project.
- Reconnect or reauthenticate approved connected apps.
- Recreate unsupported plugins, Sites, or tool settings manually.
- Run representative prompts before treating the organization workspace as your only copy.
Use agent import when the source and destination are explicitly supported
OpenAI’s current “Import from another agent” documentation lists the ChatGPT desktop app as supporting imports from Claude Code, Claude Cowork, and Cursor. Codex CLI supports Claude Code and Cursor. Depending on the route, an import can include supported setup, instructions, skills, plugins, projects, and recent work. ChatGPT desktop may keep imported work in sync; Codex CLI imports up to 50 chats from the last 30 days.

These limits describe specific importers, not a general migration guarantee. Select only a source that the destination names, then read the item summary produced by the importer. Confirm the destination account or workspace before accepting the transfer.
Review dynamic prompt templates immediately
OpenAI specifically calls out templates or command-style prompts that use arguments, shell interpolation, or file-path placeholders. A template can import as text while losing the mechanism that supplied its values. For each such item:
- List every argument and its expected type.
- Replace source-specific syntax with the destination’s variable syntax.
- Check quoting and escaping around shell or command substitutions.
- Update absolute and relative file paths to locations the destination can access.
- Run the command or prompt with a harmless test value before using production data.
Rebuild permissions and integrations
An imported plugin, skill, hook, or connector may require separate authentication or approval. Review permissions, hooks, plugins, authentication state, and dynamic templates before running an imported workflow. Never assume that a copied configuration grants the destination access to the source account or local files.

When no compatible importer exists, use downloaded files as a controlled reconstruction source. ChatGPT Library provides a way to locate, organize, and download saved files. Temporary Chat uploads are not saved to the Library, so check whether a file came from a temporary conversation before expecting it to appear there.
- Download each relevant Library file and preserve the original filename and date.
- Open the files outside the destination and verify that prompt text, examples, encodings, and line breaks survived the download.
- Create destination entries manually or in the destination’s documented bulk-import format.
- Recreate tags, versions, variables, and attachments from your manifest.
- Record omissions rather than silently dropping unsupported fields.
If a destination accepts Markdown, JSON, or CSV, use that format only when its current documentation specifies the required schema. A generic file extension does not establish compatibility.
Map fields deliberately instead of pasting blindly
Create a mapping table before importing a large library. It should show where each source field goes and what happens when there is no equivalent.

| Source field | Destination action | Verification question |
|---|---|---|
| Prompt name and description | Copy to the destination title and description fields | Can you find the prompt by its original name? |
| System or instruction text | Place in the destination’s instruction or system field | Is role order preserved? |
| Examples | Keep as examples, test cases, or an attached reference | Does the destination still show them to the model? |
| Variables and placeholders | Convert to the destination’s syntax and document defaults | Does a test value populate every variable? |
| Tags, folders, and versions | Map to equivalent organization fields or retain in description | Can you identify the current revision? |
| Files and references | Reattach, relocate, or mark as unavailable | Can the prompt open every required reference? |
| Tools, connectors, and plugins | Reauthorize or rebuild separately | Are permissions present and limited to what is needed? |
| Unsupported metadata | Record as omitted in the migration manifest | Will a future editor know what changed? |
Preserve placeholders exactly while you are comparing versions. If the destination uses different delimiters, make the conversion in a working copy and keep a before-and-after example. Prompt text that contains shell syntax or file paths deserves a manual review even when the importer reports success.
Validate the destination before switching completely
Validation is the point at which you discover a migration that was technically complete but behaviorally broken. Use a representative sample instead of testing only the simplest prompt.
Build a test set
- One plain instruction with no variables.
- One prompt with several variables and a strict output format.
- One with examples or few-shot demonstrations.
- One that reads a file or calls a tool.
- One with shell interpolation or a file-path placeholder.
- One high-value prompt with a known-good output example.
Compare behavior
- Run each source prompt with the same safe input and save the output.
- Run the mapped destination version with identical input.
- Check instruction order, formatting, variable substitution, references, tool access, and response constraints.
- Mark differences as expected platform behavior, a mapping error, or a missing dependency.
- Repair the destination copy and rerun the test.
There is no universal official test protocol for every prompt manager; this sample-based approach follows the import guidance to inspect setup and dynamic templates before relying on them. Keep the test inputs non-sensitive, especially when moving content into an organization-controlled workspace.
Use a migration status ledger
For each item, record exported, mapped, imported, dependencies restored, tested, and approved. Include an omission note when a field or data class is unsupported. Do not delete the old source until every important item is approved and you have a recoverable copy.
Troubleshoot common migration failures
The importer rejects the archive
Check whether the destination supports the source application and the specific item type. An account archive may be for download only. Extract the prompt text into the destination’s documented format, or use a native importer instead of repeatedly submitting an incompatible archive.

Output quality changed after import
Look for reordered system and user instructions, dropped examples, missing files, unavailable tools, or altered model settings. Compare the source and destination copies side by side and repair the first difference rather than adding extra instructions at random.
Files or connectors are missing
Check whether the item was eligible for transfer, whether it was stored in a Library or only in a temporary chat, and whether the destination requires reauthentication. Reattach files and approve only the connectors required by that workflow.
Memory import did not affect responses
Claude’s memory import is experimental, and imported entries may not be incorporated. Review the extracted memory list, correct it, and test a prompt that should use a specific entry. Keep critical behavior in the prompt itself rather than relying solely on memory.

Allow the documented migration to finish, then inspect each destination section—conversations, projects, files, memories, personalization, and automations. Gradual appearance is not evidence that omitted items will arrive later; compare against your manifest and recreate anything excluded.
A practical cutover checklist
- Inventory prompts, memories, chats, projects, files, variables, tools, and permissions separately.
- Create and store an untouched source backup.
- Confirm the destination’s supported source applications and item types.
- Decide whether you need an importer, a memory transfer, a workspace merge, or manual reconstruction.
- Map names, instructions, examples, variables, tags, versions, files, and integrations.
- Review access, retention, authentication, hooks, plugins, and connected apps.
- Test representative prompts, including dynamic and dependency-heavy examples.
- Log omissions and repairs in a migration ledger.
- Keep the source available until every important item is verified and approved.
A successful migration is not the moment an import button reports completion. It is the point at which the destination contains the required prompt content and dependencies, the changed fields are documented, representative outputs are acceptable, and you still have a recoverable source copy.
