Move the rules as reviewed configuration files—not as an unexamined copy of live state: inventory both hosts, export IPv4 and IPv6 separately, adapt host-specific values, test parsing without committing, apply during a controlled cutover with console access available, verify traffic, then configure the destination’s distribution-specific persistence and test a reboot.
What an iptables migration actually moves
An iptables migration copies the firewall policy currently held in kernel tables and recreates it on another host. The policy can include filter rules, NAT rules, custom chains, default policies, comments and references to interfaces, addresses, modules and services. It does not automatically reproduce the destination’s network identity, interface names, loaded modules, IP sets, connection-tracking state or the service that will reload rules at boot.

Those changes disappear after a reboot unless a saved rules file is loaded by a service or boot hook. A successful one-time restore therefore is not the same thing as a persistent migration.
1. Inventory the source and destination before exporting
Start with a written inventory. The destination may use different device names, addresses, firewall management software or an nftables backend, so a file that is syntactically valid can still block administration or protect the wrong interface.

Record the source firewall context
- Distribution name and release, kernel release and whether the host uses systemd or an older init service.
- Whether IPv4 only or both IPv4 and IPv6 are active. Treat each address family as a separate migration.
- Interface names, VLAN or bridge names, assigned addresses, routes and the interface used for administration.
- Default policies for the filter tables and any custom chains referenced by other rules.
- Filter, NAT and mangle behavior, including forwarding, masquerading, port forwarding and destination or source translation.
- IP sets, connection-tracking helpers and any external service that creates or changes rules.
- Whether rules are controlled directly by legacy iptables commands, by firewalld, or by native nftables.
Record the destination constraints
- The new host’s release, interface names, addresses and management path.
- Which firewall backend is installed and which service is enabled at boot.
- Whether the required kernel modules, NAT support, custom chains and helper functionality are available.
- Console, hypervisor, serial or other out-of-band access that remains usable if network access is lost.
Do not assume that a distribution’s command name identifies its backend. Some current releases provide iptables-compatible commands that program nftables. Confirm the control plane before deciding whether to restore the files unchanged or translate them.
2. Export IPv4 and IPv6 as separate, immutable files
On the source host, save the active IPv4 ruleset:
iptables-save > rules.v4
If IPv6 is configured, save that family separately:
ip6tables-save > rules.v6
Keep the files as read-only rollback copies after export. IPv4 and IPv6 are independent rule families; exporting only IPv4 can leave IPv6 traffic exposed or can cause expected IPv6 connections to fail after the move.
The saved text can be copied from another system, but it is not automatically portable. It may contain the source host’s addresses, interface names, comments, custom chains or references to modules and services that do not exist on the destination.
Capture dependencies that are outside the two dumps
Compare the inventory with the exported text. If a rule matches an IP set, make a separate plan to recreate that set and its contents before the dependent rule is activated. Likewise, identify any connection-tracking helper or kernel module that the source relied on. The rule files are the firewall policy; they are not a complete backup of every object the policy can reference.
3. Transfer the files securely and adapt source-specific values
Copy the exports over an authenticated channel to a protected location on the destination. Preserve the originals unchanged so they remain usable for rollback. Work on a review copy when editing.

- Replace source addresses with the destination addresses where the policy is intended to follow the service rather than the old host.
- Change interface matches when names differ, such as a source rule tied to one Ethernet device name and a destination that uses another.
- Check comments and custom chain names for references to retired services or networks.
- Remove or redesign rules that depend on unavailable modules, helpers, chains or firewall services.
- Verify NAT translations against the destination’s routing and public addresses instead of assuming the old mappings still apply.
Do not perform broad search-and-replace operations without reviewing the surrounding rule. An address can appear as a source, destination, NAT endpoint or trusted management network, and each use may require a different decision.

4. Identify the destination’s firewall control plane
Before loading anything, determine which of these situations applies:
| Destination situation | Migration treatment | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| Legacy iptables service owns the rules | Review the dumps, test them, restore them, then place them in the release’s documented persistence location. | A restore can flush existing tables, and a service may not be enabled at boot. |
| iptables-compatible commands backed by nftables | Confirm that the compatibility layer accepts the syntax and decide whether to keep that layer or convert to native nftables. | Legacy behavior, extensions or service ordering may differ from the source. |
| firewalld manages the host | Do not blindly load an independent ruleset over the manager. Recreate the required policy through the manager or deliberately change ownership. | The manager can overwrite manual rules at reload or reboot. |
| Native nftables is expected | Translate the IPv4 and IPv6 dumps, review the generated native ruleset, then follow the release procedure for enabling nftables and disabling the legacy service. | Translation can require manual changes for unsupported or semantically different extensions. |
Use one authoritative control plane. Running a legacy restore while another service is configured to regenerate rules creates an apparently successful migration that disappears on the next reload.
5. Parse the files without changing live rules
Where the installed implementation supports it, run the restore parser in test mode before committing:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstalliptables-restore --test < rules.v4
ip6tables-restore --test < rules.v6
The short option is -t. Test mode parses and constructs the rules without committing them. It catches malformed syntax, missing chains and unsupported matches before the active firewall is touched.
Remember that a normal restore flushes the target table before loading the file. The --noflush option changes that behavior, but it should not be used casually: merging an unknown destination ruleset with the imported policy can leave duplicate, conflicting or obsolete rules. Choose flush versus no-flush deliberately and document the choice for the rollback plan.
Resolve test failures before the window
- A missing chain usually means a custom chain was omitted, renamed or referenced in the wrong order.
- An unknown match or target points to a destination module or backend difference that must be installed, replaced or removed.
- An interface error indicates that the file still contains a source device name.
- An address or network error indicates stale source addressing or a malformed edit.
A parser pass proves only that the file can be constructed. It does not prove that the policy permits the new host’s management traffic or that NAT and forwarding work with the destination’s routes.
6. Plan a cutover that cannot strand you
Firewall changes can terminate the session used to make them. Keep an existing administrative session open, arrange console or out-of-band access, and stage a second connection before applying the new policy.

Pre-authorize required traffic
Confirm that the rules allow the actual management port, the administrator’s source networks, DNS, time synchronization, monitoring and every application dependency needed during validation. If the server uses a port other than SSH for administration, authorize that port instead of assuming a default.
Use independent checks
- Leave the original administrative session connected.
- Start a second session from the expected client network, or arrange a test from the monitoring or application network.
- Keep console access ready in case both network sessions are closed.
- Schedule the change when the application can tolerate a brief interruption and when someone can observe the result.
- Have the untouched, known-good export and the exact restore command available before the first commit.
7. Restore the reviewed rules
For a legacy iptables destination, apply the reviewed IPv4 file with:
iptables-restore < rules.v4
Apply the IPv6 file separately when IPv6 is in use:
ip6tables-restore < rules.v6
Run the commands from the protected maintenance path, not from an untested remote connection. If the command reports an error, do not assume that earlier lines were harmless; use the open session or console to restore the previous known-good file and inspect the destination state.
Do not confuse a successful command with a successful migration
A restore can return without an error while the policy still references the wrong interface, permits only the old address, or blocks an application dependency. Treat the command as the beginning of validation, not the end.
8. Verify rules, counters and real traffic
Inspect the resulting filter rules and counters:
iptables -S
iptables -L -n -v
iptables -t nat -L -n -v
Use the IPv6 equivalents for the IPv6 policy:
ip6tables -S
ip6tables -L -n -v
ip6tables -t nat -L -n -v
Check that default policies, custom chains, rule order and NAT targets match the intended design. Then exercise behavior from the networks that matter:
- Log in through the management path from a second connection.
- Resolve names and reach required external or internal dependencies.
- Test each published application port from an expected client network.
- Test forwarding and translated traffic where the server routes or NATs packets.
- Confirm that traffic intentionally denied remains denied.
- Repeat the checks over IPv6 when the host advertises IPv6 service.
Counters are useful evidence that the intended rules are seeing packets, but zero packets can also mean that the test did not traverse the expected interface or address. Correlate counters with connection logs and the client-side result rather than treating any nonzero value as proof of correctness.

9. Configure persistence for the destination distribution
The correct file path and service are release-specific. Configure persistence only after the live rules pass validation.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

| Environment | Documented persistence pattern | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Red Hat systems using the iptables service | Store the rules in /etc/sysconfig/iptables and have the iptables service reapply them. |
That the installed release still uses this service, the file contains the reviewed policy, and the service is enabled and ordered correctly at boot. |
| Debian systems using iptables-persistent or a boot hook | Use /etc/iptables/rules.v4 and /etc/iptables/rules.v6. |
That the persistence package or hook is installed, both files are loaded, and IPv6 is not omitted. |
| firewalld-managed host | Persist the policy through firewalld’s configuration model rather than an unrelated raw restore. | That a reload preserves the intended zones, services, rich rules and forwarding behavior. |
| Native nftables host | Persist the reviewed native nftables ruleset using the release’s nftables service and configuration path. | That the legacy iptables service is not also rewriting the tables. |
Older documentation may show init-script commands and paths that do not match a current system. Check the destination’s installed service unit, package documentation and enabled targets instead of copying a historical command verbatim.
10. Convert deliberately when the destination uses nftables
When native nftables is the destination control plane, use the translation workflow rather than assuming a legacy restore is equivalent. Translate the IPv4 dump and review the generated rules:
iptables-restore-translate -f rules.v4
Translate the IPv6 dump with the IPv6 translator available on the destination:
ip6tables-restore-translate -f rules.v6
Write the output to a native rules file according to the destination’s release procedure, then inspect it for:
- Interface and address matches that still identify the old server.
- Ordering changes that alter first-match behavior.
- Matches or targets that have no direct native equivalent.
- Separate IPv4 and IPv6 behavior, including NAT and forwarding.
- Service ownership, so the nftables service loads the converted policy and the legacy iptables service is disabled when the release requires that change.
Translation produces a starting ruleset, not an approval to deploy it unchanged. Parse and validate the native file using the destination’s nftables tooling, then repeat the management, application, NAT and denial tests.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.11. Perform a controlled restart or reboot test
After persistence is configured and live traffic is verified, test the mechanism that must survive an outage. Prefer a controlled service restart first when it exercises the same loader, then schedule a reboot if operationally safe.

- Confirm that the persistent IPv4 and IPv6 files are present and readable.
- Confirm that the intended firewall service is enabled and that competing managers are not enabled.
- Restart the firewall service or reboot during the approved window.
- Reconnect through the management path and repeat the application, DNS, monitoring, forwarding and denial checks.
- Inspect the rules and counters again to ensure the boot-loaded policy is the one you reviewed.
This test exposes missing modules, service-ordering problems, incorrect file paths and hooks that load only one address family.
Rollback and failure handling
If the restore closes network access
Use the still-open administrative session if it remains active; otherwise use the console or out-of-band channel. Restore the previous known-good file, reload the affected family, and verify connectivity before investigating edits. Do not repeatedly apply an uncertain file over a damaged state.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If only IPv6 fails
Inspect the IPv6 export and persistent file independently. Check that the destination has the expected IPv6 address and interface, that the IPv6 loader is enabled, and that the test was run with ip6tables-restore rather than the IPv4 command.
If rules disappear after reboot
Determine which service loaded the tables, whether it is enabled, whether its file path matches the release, and whether another manager replaced the rules later in boot. A live restore without a working boot loader is not persistence.
If the parser rejects a copied file
Compare the failing rule with destination modules, extensions, chains and backend. Correct the dependency or redesign that rule; do not suppress the error and continue with a partially understood policy.
If traffic is allowed or denied unexpectedly
Check rule order, default policies, interface direction, source and destination addresses, NAT table contents and whether the test packet used IPv4 or IPv6. Confirm the packet actually traversed the host by correlating counters with the test.
Migration approaches compared
| Decision axis | Legacy iptables restore | iptables-compatible nftables backend | Native nftables translation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Backend | Legacy iptables tables and extensions. | iptables command syntax mapped to nftables. | Native nftables ruleset after translation and review. |
| Persistence | Distribution service and its documented rules file. | Depends on the compatibility service or manager. | nftables service and native configuration path. |
| Portability | Requires editing addresses, interfaces, modules and chains. | Still requires destination-specific review. | Requires review of translation and native semantics. |
| IPv4/IPv6 coverage | Separate rules.v4 and rules.v6 restores. |
Separate family handling remains necessary. | Translate and validate each family separately. |
| Rollback access | Existing session plus console or out-of-band access. | Same, with an additional backend-ownership check. | Keep the original dumps and the prior native ruleset. |
| Test-only parse | iptables-restore --test and the IPv6 equivalent where supported. |
Test support and syntax depend on the installed implementation. | Use the destination’s nftables validation workflow after translation. |
Final pre-cutover checklist
- Source and destination releases, interfaces, addresses and control planes are documented.
- IPv4 and IPv6 exports exist when both families are active.
- Original exports are preserved as immutable rollback files.
- Source-specific addresses, interfaces, chains, modules and services were reviewed.
- IP sets and connection-tracking dependencies have a recreation plan.
- Destination backend ownership is understood; competing managers are disabled or reconciled.
- Restore parsing passed before commit, with the flush or no-flush choice explicit.
- An existing session, second test connection and console or out-of-band path are available.
- Management, DNS, monitoring, application, forwarding, NAT and intentional-denial tests are defined.
- Distribution-specific persistence is configured for both address families.
- A controlled restart or reboot has reloaded the expected policy successfully.
The Bottom Line
A safe migration is a controlled recreation: export both families, adapt host-specific dependencies, test without committing, cut over with independent recovery access, verify real traffic, and prove that the destination’s own startup mechanism reloads the same policy after reboot.
