Do not try to translate an entire computer with one command. A safe migration separates operating-system packages, globally installed language packages, project dependencies, and your own scripts and configuration. Export each category with the format that actually represents it, rebuild projects from manifests and lockfiles, test the new paths and services, and keep the old installation until the replacement is proven.
The exact commands depend on the source manager, destination manager, operating system, and CPU architecture. The workflow below is deliberately ecosystem-neutral, with clearly marked Homebrew and pnpm examples where official tooling exists.
What “migrate packages and scripts” really includes
A package-manager migration is a change to both software state and the assumptions around that software. The installed program is only one part of the state. You may also need its executable name, service definition, configuration files, environment variables, shell startup entries, permissions, and project-specific dependency metadata.
Keep these scopes separate because they have different owners and different recovery methods:

| Scope | What it contains | Best migration record | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|---|
| Operating-system packages | System or user packages tracked by the OS package manager | The manager’s supported list or bundle/export format | That language-tool globals or project environments were captured |
| Language-manager globals | Packages installed globally by tools such as npm, pip, gem, or cpan | The language tool’s own list or export command | That a system package manager knows about them |
| Project dependencies | Dependencies declared in a project manifest and resolved for that project | Manifest plus lockfile, preserved in version control | That a machine-wide package list can recreate the project exactly |
| Scripts and configuration | Shell files, automation, PATH edits, environment variables, service settings, hooks, and local tooling | Versioned files and a written inventory of paths and assumptions | That any package manager can automatically translate the scripts |
Homebrew explicitly says packages installed directly by npm, pip, gem, and cpan are outside Homebrew’s installation records, even when related files appear under a Homebrew prefix. Treat those tools as separate inventories; see Homebrew’s language-runtime guidance.
Before changing anything: define the migration boundary
Record the platform
Write down the source manager, destination manager, operating-system name and version, machine architecture, user account, installation prefixes, and whether the target is a new machine or an in-place replacement. A package that exists for one operating system or architecture may not exist for another, and a script containing an absolute path can fail even when the package itself installs successfully.
On Homebrew, the default prefix differs by platform and architecture. Do not copy a hard-coded path from one computer to another without checking the destination. The official Homebrew installation documentation explains the supported installation locations and the shell configuration required to put the installation on PATH.
Decide what “success” means
Make a short acceptance list before uninstalling anything. Include the commands people actually run, the projects that must build, scheduled jobs, background services, credentials or configuration locations, and any tools that must be available to non-interactive shells. This turns migration into a set of observable checks rather than a comparison of package names.
- Every required executable resolves to the intended new path.
- Version output is acceptable for the workload; it does not have to match byte-for-byte unless the project requires that.
- Project installation and tests complete from the checked-in manifest and lockfile.
- Services start, stop, and restart under the destination manager or the operating system’s service mechanism.
- Interactive and non-interactive shells receive the intended PATH and environment variables.
- Permissions and ownership remain appropriate without weakening system-directory protections.
Capture the old state while it still works
Export the source manager’s supported inventory
Use the source manager’s official export or list feature, then save the result outside the installation directory. A list is a record for review; it is not automatically a restoration plan. Keep the date, machine, operating-system version, and architecture beside the file.
For Homebrew, Homebrew Bundle can write a Brewfile snapshot of supported installed formulae, casks, taps, and other supported package types:
brew bundle dump
Review the generated Brewfile before using it elsewhere. To restore the supported entries on the destination, run:

brew bundle
The current feature set includes formulae and casks plus integrations such as Mac App Store apps, VS Code extensions, Go packages, Cargo packages, npm packages, uv tools, Flatpak, and krew plugins. Availability and syntax can change, so verify the current Homebrew Bundle and Brewfile documentation for the installed Homebrew version.
Capture language-manager globals separately
Run the listing or export operation supplied by each language tool, and label the output with the tool and runtime version. Typical examples include a global npm listing and a pip package freeze, but the exact command and whether it records versions vary by tool and environment. Do not merge these files into the operating-system package export.
Also record which runtime owns each global installation. A package installed under one Python virtual environment, Node version manager, Ruby version, or system interpreter may not be visible after the runtime changes. If a global package is actually a project dependency, move it into the project manifest instead of treating it as machine-wide software.
Preserve project files and lockfiles
For every project, copy the manifest, lockfile, workspace configuration, build scripts, and documented runtime-version files. A machine inventory cannot reconstruct the exact dependency graph that a project lockfile records.
If the destination is pnpm and the project has a lockfile from another supported package manager, pnpm’s documented import workflow creates pnpm-lock.yaml from that lockfile:
pnpm import
For a workspace, create pnpm-workspace.yaml before importing. Follow the exact procedure in pnpm’s import documentation; importing a workspace without its workspace metadata can produce an incomplete or incorrectly scoped result.
Copy scripts and configuration as first-class assets
Inventory shell startup files, wrapper scripts, task runners, CI definitions, service files, scheduled jobs, environment-variable files, and configuration directories. Search for:

- Executable names that differ in the destination manager.

- Environment variables expected by build tools or services.
- Install hooks that run with a particular shell, user, or working directory.
- Permissions, ownership, sockets, ports, and service names.
Store redacted configuration in version control where appropriate. Keep secrets in a separate secret-management system; do not put credentials into a package export or a public repository.

Understand what each export can and cannot reproduce
Migration records differ in fidelity. Before restoring one, ask whether it captures identity, versions, dependencies, scripts, and platform assumptions.
| Approach | Captures | Version fidelity | Dependencies and scripts | Review and rollback |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| System-manager list or bundle | Packages that manager owns and supports | Often package identity and current resolver choices; exact arbitrary historical versions are not guaranteed | Manager-defined dependencies; local scripts and unrelated language globals are not included | Readable and reviewable; retain the old inventory for rollback |
| Homebrew Bundle/Brewfile | Supported Homebrew entries such as formulae, casks, taps, and documented integrations | Not an arbitrary-version lockfile; Homebrew describes its model as rolling release | Restores listed package types, not every file or shell assumption | Text snapshot is easy to review; old installations should remain until validation passes |
| Project manifest plus lockfile | Declared project dependencies and the resolved dependency graph | Highest fidelity when the lockfile is honored by the destination tool | Project dependency metadata; machine-wide services and shell configuration remain separate | Diffable and reproducible within supported platforms and runtimes |
| Manual script/configuration inventory | Paths, variables, hooks, services, and operational assumptions | Depends on how completely it was recorded | Can cover behavior that package exports cannot | Requires explicit tests and a retained copy of the old files |
A Brewfile is therefore a useful installed-state snapshot, not a universal lockfile. Homebrew says it does not support installing arbitrary older versions and that Brewfile has no concept of pinning formula versions in the way a project lockfile pins a dependency graph. A successful brew bundle run means the supported entries were processed; it does not prove that every original version, option, path, service state, or language-global package was recreated.
Map packages by purpose, not by spelling
Do not paste an old list into the new manager and assume matching names mean matching software. Build a mapping sheet with one row per item and decide its destination deliberately.
| Old item | Purpose | New owner | Target package or replacement | Checks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Compiler, runtime, or SDK | Build or execution prerequisite | System manager, language manager, or project toolchain | Record the exact target selection | Architecture, supported OS, version, and PATH |
| Command-line utility | Interactive or scripted command | System manager or standalone distribution | Confirm executable name | Exit codes, flags, and output used by scripts |
| Library used by one project | Application dependency | Project manifest | Add or import into the project | Lockfile, tests, and runtime compatibility |
| Global developer tool | Shared command across projects | Language manager or destination tool’s global mechanism | Install under the intended runtime | Which runtime exposes the command |
| Service or daemon | Background process | Destination service mechanism | Map service name and configuration | Start/stop behavior, ports, logs, and permissions |
For each row, check whether the destination supports the target operating system and architecture, whether the package is now supplied as a dependency of another package, and whether a replacement changes command names or configuration formats. The available official guidance does not provide a universal package-name mapping table, so unresolved rows require manual review rather than a guessed substitution.

Recreate project environments from manifests
Keep project dependencies local
Project dependencies belong in the project’s manifest and lockfile whenever the ecosystem supports them. This avoids making a machine-wide installation the hidden prerequisite for a build and lets another machine recreate the same dependency graph.
Before changing managers, commit or archive the existing manifest and lockfile. After conversion, inspect the generated lockfile, install from a clean directory, and run the project’s build and test commands. If the project is a workspace, verify that every package is included and that scripts run from the expected workspace root.

Use pnpm import for a pnpm destination
- Place the project manifest and the source manager’s lockfile in the project root.
- For a workspace, add
pnpm-workspace.yamlfirst and define the intended package boundaries. - Run
pnpm import. - Review the resulting
pnpm-lock.yamlas a code change. Look for omitted workspace packages, unexpected registry entries, or dependency versions that differ from the source lockfile’s resolution. - Install dependencies with pnpm, then run the project’s documented tests, build, lint, and start commands.
Import converts project lockfile information; it does not migrate operating-system packages, global tools, shell files, or services. Those remain separate workstreams.
Install in small batches and validate behavior
Install the destination packages in dependency-aware groups rather than removing the source manager and restoring everything at once. A useful order is runtime and build prerequisites, core command-line tools, project dependencies, optional developer tools, then services.
Validate executable resolution
- Open a new shell so startup files are re-read.
- Resolve each critical command with the operating system’s command-location facility, such as
command -v toolnameon POSIX shells. - Check the command’s version and run a harmless operation that exercises the expected subcommand or plugin.
- Compare the resolved path with the intended destination prefix and remove stale PATH entries only after the new path is confirmed.
Check both an interactive shell and the context used by automation. A PATH that works in a terminal may not be present in a scheduled job, service unit, IDE task, or CI runner.
Validate services and permissions
Start each required service using the destination system’s documented mechanism. Confirm that it listens on the expected interface and port, reads the intended configuration, survives a restart, and writes logs where operators expect them. Test the application that consumes the service rather than checking only that a process exists.
Do not solve installation failures by broadly changing ownership of system-managed directories. Homebrew’s language-package guidance specifically warns against using sudo with language package managers or changing directory ownership as a workaround. That warning concerns the boundary between Homebrew and language tools; privilege models differ across package managers, so follow the destination manager’s own documentation.
Run real project checks
- Install from a clean checkout using only the committed manifest and lockfile.
- Run unit, integration, and smoke tests.
- Build production artifacts if the project produces them.
- Exercise scripts that invoke external commands, especially those with pipes, temporary files, or service calls.
- Compare generated output, not just exit status, when output is consumed by another tool.
Homebrew example: a supported installed-state snapshot
Homebrew Bundle is an example of a manager-specific restoration workflow, not a model for translating every package ecosystem. The minimal sequence is:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- On the old machine, run
brew bundle dumpto write a Brewfile snapshot. - Open the Brewfile and remove entries you intentionally do not want on the destination. Record any items installed by npm, pip, gem, cpan, or another manager in their own inventories.
- Install the supported Homebrew base on the destination and confirm its prefix and shell initialization using the current installation instructions.
- Copy the reviewed Brewfile to the destination.
- Run
brew bundle. - Review failures individually. A missing cask, unavailable architecture build, renamed package, or external integration may need a deliberate replacement.
- Run the executable, service, and project tests described in your acceptance list.
Homebrew’s rolling-release model means the restored package may be newer than the one on the old machine. If an application depends on a specific version, use that application’s supported version-management or container strategy instead of treating Brewfile as an arbitrary-version lockfile.

Scripts are a porting task, not an export feature
No package manager can be assumed to translate your scripts automatically. Read each script as code and identify its external contracts.
Paths and command names
Replace hard-coded prefixes with a discovered path or a documented environment variable where practical. Check command names, subcommand syntax, default config locations, and whether a tool moved from a system package to a language-managed global installation. Avoid silently accepting a different executable by the same name; print or log the resolved path during migration tests.
Shell startup and environment
Update the appropriate startup files for the shell and execution context. Ensure the destination manager’s initialization appears once, in the correct order, and does not shadow a project-specific runtime. Open a fresh shell after edits and test a non-interactive invocation, because some startup files are skipped in scripts.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Install hooks and services
Review hooks that assume a particular current directory, user, shell, writable prefix, service name, or network availability. Recreate service definitions using the destination operating system or manager’s supported mechanism and test start, stop, restart, and failure behavior. Keep a copy of the old definitions until the replacement is operational.
Troubleshooting branches
The destination says a package is unavailable
- Confirm the operating system and architecture are supported.
- Check whether the package was renamed, split, or replaced by a dependency.
- Determine whether it belongs in a project manifest or a language manager rather than the system manager.
- Choose a documented alternative only after checking the command and configuration compatibility.
The command exists but the script fails
- Resolve the command path and compare it with the intended installation.
- Check PATH ordering and shell initialization in the actual execution context.
- Compare version output and supported flags.
- Inspect quoting, working-directory, temporary-file, and permission assumptions.
A project installs but behaves differently
- Verify that the destination used the project lockfile rather than a fresh unconstrained resolution.
- For pnpm workspaces, confirm
pnpm-workspace.yamlwas present beforepnpm import. - Check runtime and native-module architecture compatibility.
- Run the project’s tests and inspect generated artifacts for differences.
The migration changed a system directory or permission
Stop and restore the original ownership or permission model from your documented backup rather than applying another broad change. For Homebrew and language-manager boundaries, avoid escalating with sudo or taking ownership of system-managed directories simply to make an install succeed.
Keep a rollback path
There is no universal rollback command that can undo every package, script, path edit, service change, and configuration conversion. Your rollback plan is therefore an evidence-preservation plan:
- Keep the old package inventories, manifests, lockfiles, scripts, and configuration backups.
- Do not uninstall the old manager while critical acceptance checks are still failing.
- Record every destination change, including removed PATH lines, service edits, and migrated configuration.
- If a project fails, restore its original lockfile and runtime selection before changing unrelated machine-wide software.
- When the new setup passes, remove old software in deliberate batches and retain the records needed to reproduce the decision.
When it is safe to retire the old manager
Retire the source manager only after the target inventory has been reviewed and the tools that were outside the source manager’s records have been verified manually. Confirm that projects install from their own metadata, global tools are attached to the intended runtimes, scripts resolve the correct executables, services recover after restart, and both interactive and automated shells behave as expected.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe durable pattern is simple: use a manager-specific snapshot for the packages it owns, use each language tool’s own records for global packages, use project manifests and lockfiles for project dependencies, and port scripts and configuration through explicit review and tests. That division is what makes the migration understandable and reversible.
