You can move from NextDNS to Control D without abandoning your DNS policy, but there is no automatic settings import described by the official migration guidance. The safe approach is to inventory each NextDNS configuration, recreate its behavior in a Control D Profile, assign that Profile to the correct Endpoint, and test a small pilot before changing every resolver.
Keep the existing NextDNS resolver details and configuration IDs available throughout the change. A staged migration lets you compare real queries, preserve private-name resolution, and restore the previous resolver quickly if a policy or deployment detail is wrong.
What this migration preserves—and what it cannot copy automatically
The migration is a policy-mapping exercise. A NextDNS configuration and a Control D Profile can represent similar intent, but their filters, category names, third-party lists, and matching behavior are not guaranteed to be identical. Treat every recreated control as a hypothesis to verify, not as a byte-for-byte copy.
A DNS resolver evaluates domain names. It cannot enforce a rule that depends on an HTTP URL path, query string, page content, or another application-layer condition. Any NextDNS entry that contains more than a domain needs a deliberate review instead of a blind import.

Control D Profiles are not active by themselves: the Profile must be enforced on an Endpoint. An Endpoint can represent a router or network, a roaming computer or phone, or a client running on a device. The scope of the old NextDNS configuration and the scope of the new Endpoint must match.
Inventory every NextDNS configuration before changing DNS
Do this while the current service is still working. Make a separate record for every NextDNS configuration that has different behavior; do not rely on memory or on a single “main” profile.
Record policy and identity
- Configuration or profile ID.
- Devices, users, routers, networks, offices, or groups assigned to it.
- Security controls, privacy and ad/tracker lists, parental controls, service blocks, and category settings.
- Allowlist and denylist entries, including the reason for unusual exceptions.
- Rewrites, linked-IP or Dynamic DNS settings, and any local DNS behavior.
- Logging level and retention preferences that users or administrators rely on.
Record how DNS reaches NextDNS
Write down the resolver hostnames or URLs and every place where they are configured: router or firewall, DHCP, operating-system network settings, browser DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH), mobile private DNS, VPN software, MDM profiles, and any local client or daemon. Note whether a device uses a static configuration, source-IP authorization, or a Dynamic DNS/heartbeat method.
Preserve a rollback worksheet
Save the NextDNS IDs, resolver values, linked-IP details, and the exact settings you will change. Keep a copy outside the dashboard so a router or endpoint can be restored even if the new service is unavailable. Do not delete the old configuration until the new deployment has operated cleanly for several days.
Design the Control D Profile structure
Use one Profile for each distinct policy
For each NextDNS configuration that needs different blocking, privacy, content, or service behavior, create a corresponding Control D Profile. This preserves the old policy boundaries and makes testing unambiguous: one Endpoint should receive one intended Profile.
If several configurations share nearly all settings, a shared baseline Profile can reduce maintenance. Put the common controls in that baseline and use Profile-specific Custom Rules for the exceptions. Confirm that the resulting scope still matches the original users and devices; simplifying profiles should not silently broaden a block or bypass.
Map intent before selecting a feature
| NextDNS behavior | Control D starting point | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Broad security, privacy, ad, tracker, or content filtering | Closest matching Control D Filter | Category definitions, list membership, and false positives can differ; test representative domains and applications. |
| Named application or online service | Control D Service when a matching service is available | Check all domains needed by the service, including sign-in, update, telemetry, and regional endpoints. |
| One specific domain that must be allowed | BYPASS Custom Rule | Confirm that the rule applies to the intended Profile and does not expose sibling subdomains unintentionally. |
| One specific domain that must be denied | BLOCK Custom Rule | Test both the blocked domain and legitimate domains that share a parent name. |
| Public DNS override | Appropriate Custom Rule or other documented override | Verify the returned address from the actual client and resolver path. |
| Private or internal hostname | Local DNS, forwarding, split-horizon DNS, Active Directory, router DNS, or a ctrld custom configuration | Ensure internal queries reach the internal authority rather than a public resolver. |
Choose the closest matching filter or service, then validate the outcome. Do not promise that a Control D category or third-party list reproduces a NextDNS list exactly; the names and underlying domains may be different.

Clean and transfer allowlists and denylists
Explicit exceptions are usually the most important settings to preserve because they often represent a known business, school, family, or customer requirement. Transfer them separately from broad filters.
Normalize the source data
- Export or copy the NextDNS allowlist and denylist for one configuration at a time.
- Reduce each entry to one domain or subdomain per line.
- Remove protocols such as
https://, URL paths, query strings, quotes, inline comments, blank lines, and duplicate entries. - Review wildcard syntax and parent-domain entries manually. Confirm how the destination rule matches subdomains before adding a broad parent.
- Keep the cleaned allow and deny files separate and label them with the source configuration ID.
For example, an entry such as https://portal.example.test/login?region=eu is not a DNS-only rule. The DNS portion is portal.example.test; the path and query condition require an application-layer control or another solution.
Create destination rules with deliberate names
In the appropriate Control D Profile, create BYPASS Custom Rules for the cleaned allow entries and BLOCK Custom Rules for the cleaned deny entries. Keep the two sets visibly separate. If an exception is needed only for one user group or network, put it in that Profile rather than in a shared baseline.
After adding a batch, test a sample from the beginning, middle, and end of the list, plus any entry that was previously a frequent support issue. A successful save in the dashboard proves only that the rule was accepted; it does not prove that the intended Endpoint receives it.
Handle rewrites and internal DNS separately
NextDNS rewrites can represent two very different situations: changing the answer for a public name, or resolving a private name used only inside your network. Separate those cases before recreating anything.
Public-domain overrides
For a public hostname whose answer should be overridden for a particular Profile, use the Control D rule mechanism that targets that hostname. Test from the same network and device type that will use it, and confirm both the answer and the scope. A rule that works on a laptop may not apply to a router Endpoint serving an entire network.
Private and internal names
Internal names may need an internal DNS server, local forwarding, Active Directory DNS, split-horizon DNS, router DNS, or a ctrld custom configuration. Do not publish a private rewrite as a public rule merely because the hostname appears in the old list. Identify which resolver is authoritative for the name and make sure the new client path can reach it.

Test short hostnames, fully qualified internal names, and names that are intentionally unavailable outside the network. Also test a public name with the same label if split-horizon DNS is in use; the expected answer can differ by location.
Choose the right Control D deployment and Endpoint scope
Router or firewall deployment
Create an Endpoint representing the network and deploy the Control D resolver settings or ctrld on the router or firewall. This is appropriate when DHCP clients should inherit one policy. Check whether the router transparently redirects DNS, whether IPv6 advertises another resolver, and whether client devices can bypass the router with their own DoH settings.
Roaming computers and phones
Use device Endpoints and the deployment method appropriate to the operating system: an OS profile, MDM configuration, browser setting, or ctrld client. A roaming device may leave the office, change networks, or connect through a VPN, so test each relevant state. Mobile private DNS and browser DoH can override ordinary DHCP settings.
Legacy source-IP authorization
Source-IP authorization can work where the public source address is stable and can remain authorized. It is fragile on dynamic connections. For changing addresses, use encrypted DNS or a heartbeat/Dynamic DNS workflow that keeps the authorization current, as appropriate for the environment.
Account for competing DNS paths
- Router DHCP and IPv6 router advertisements.
- Browser DoH or secure-DNS settings.
- Mobile private DNS.
- VPN clients and split-tunnel policies.
- Local DNS caches and operating-system resolver profiles.
- Security agents that intercept or redirect DNS.
Document which path should win. Otherwise a correct Control D Profile can appear ineffective simply because the test device is still asking another resolver.

Use a ctrld NextDNS bridge when you need a staged change
The official migration guidance describes a temporary NextDNS Mode in ctrld version 1.3.2 or newer. It forwards to a NextDNS profile while you validate the local daemon, router installation, listener, and client metadata. Once those pieces are proven, you can change the upstream to Control D instead of changing every local component at once.
The documented command is:
ctrld start --nextdns NEXTDNS_PROFILE_ID
Replace NEXTDNS_PROFILE_ID with the actual NextDNS profile identifier. The generated configuration is usually at /etc/controld/ctrld.toml, although the path varies by platform. Confirm the installed ctrld version and the current platform instructions before using the command.

During the bridge stage, verify that queries arrive through the expected listener and that the client or router metadata identifies the intended device. A bridge is a validation aid, not evidence that Control D has already reproduced the old policy. You still need to build and test the destination Profile before switching its upstream.
Run a controlled pilot before the cutover
Start with one Endpoint or a small, representative user group. Include at least one device that uses the normal path and one that exercises unusual requirements such as a VPN, mobile connection, internal application, or browser-specific DoH.

- Create or identify the Endpoint. Give it the correct network, device, or user scope and verify that the intended Profile is enforced.
- Change only the pilot resolver path. Update the pilot router, OS profile, browser, MDM policy, or ctrld upstream while leaving the wider deployment on NextDNS.
- Test ordinary browsing. Check sign-in, updates, media, collaboration tools, school or work applications, and any customer-facing workflow that must remain available.
- Test policy exceptions. Confirm representative allow entries bypass the expected blocks and deny entries remain blocked.
- Test private DNS. Resolve internal names from inside and outside the network where split-horizon behavior matters.
- Inspect the Activity Log. Confirm the query action, Endpoint name, and Profile behavior match your expectations.
- Record failures and adjust one variable at a time. Change a rule, scope, or deployment setting, then repeat the affected test rather than changing the whole policy.
Verify queries in Activity Log
Control D’s Activity Log shows DNS queries only when the log level is set to Full Analytics. Enable that level for the pilot when you need query visibility, then check the actual actions recorded for important domains: allowed, bypassed, or blocked as intended.
Use the log to answer four separate questions:
- Did the query reach Control D at all?
- Which Endpoint and Profile handled it?
- Which filter, service, or Custom Rule produced the action?
- Was the result returned by the expected public or internal resolver path?
If a query is missing, investigate deployment and competing resolvers before editing policy. If it appears under the wrong Endpoint, correct identity or assignment before changing the rule. If the action is unexpected, compare the broad filter with the explicit Custom Rules and test the narrowest relevant domain.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Expand the migration and remove the bridge only after validation
When the pilot is clean, move additional Endpoints in groups that share the same policy. Recheck the Profile assignment after each group rather than assuming that a copied resolver setting also copied identity. Keep NextDNS available while you observe normal traffic for several days, including a period that covers scheduled updates, remote work, and other less frequent workflows.
After all groups pass, remove temporary bridge settings only if they are no longer needed, update the deployment documentation, and decide whether Full Analytics logging should remain enabled. Retain the rollback worksheet and the old configuration until the change is operationally routine.

- Identify the affected Endpoint, Profile, and deployment path.
- Restore the previous NextDNS resolver hostnames or client configuration on the router, DHCP, OS, browser, MDM profile, or VPN that was changed.
- If ctrld is being used as a bridge, point it back to the documented NextDNS profile or restart the prior client configuration.
- Restore linked-IP or Dynamic DNS authorization if the old setup depended on it.
- Flush local DNS caches where appropriate and repeat the failed workflow.
- Keep the Control D Profile intact while you diagnose the mismatch; deleting it removes evidence and makes a second pilot harder to compare.
Most rollbacks are a restoration of the previous resolver or a restart of the previous client. The exact steps depend on where DNS was deployed, which is why the inventory and rollback worksheet should be completed before cutover.

Troubleshooting common migration failures
An allowed site is still blocked
Confirm that the domain was normalized correctly, the BYPASS rule is in the Profile actually enforced on the test Endpoint, and no browser or VPN is using another resolver. Check the Activity Log to see whether a parent domain or a different Endpoint produced the block.
A blocked service still works
Check whether the application uses several domains, hard-coded resolvers, encrypted tunnels, or a browser-specific DNS path. Add only the required domains as BLOCK rules after confirming them in the log; do not block an entire parent domain without testing unrelated services.
Internal names fail but public browsing works
The public resolver path is probably handling a name that belongs to local DNS. Verify forwarding, Active Directory DNS, split-horizon rules, router DNS, or ctrld custom configuration, and test from the correct network segment.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Different users receive the same policy
Inspect Endpoint assignment and Profile scope. A router Endpoint may intentionally apply one policy to every DHCP client, while roaming devices may need individual Endpoints or OS/MDM profiles for differentiated behavior.
The Activity Log is empty
Confirm Full Analytics is enabled and that the device is actually querying Control D. Check browser DoH, mobile private DNS, VPN software, IPv6, and local caching before changing filters.
A rewrite works on one device only
Compare the resolver path, Endpoint identity, network location, and cache state. Public overrides and private names can require different mechanisms, so a successful result on one path does not establish that the rule is correctly deployed everywhere.
Quick Recap
Migration checklist
- Every distinct NextDNS configuration has an owner, ID, scope, and preserved rollback data.
- Each configuration has a corresponding Control D Profile or an explicitly documented baseline-plus-exception design.
- Filters and Services were mapped by policy intent, not by name alone.
- Allowlists and denylists were cleaned to domain-only entries and recreated as separate BYPASS and BLOCK Custom Rules.
- URL paths and query strings were reviewed instead of imported as DNS rules.
- Public overrides were separated from private/internal DNS requirements.
- Router, IPv6, DHCP, browser DoH, mobile private DNS, VPN, MDM, and ctrld paths were checked.
- A pilot Endpoint showed the correct Profile and expected Activity Log actions with Full Analytics enabled.
- Important business, school, family, customer, and internal-name workflows passed.
- NextDNS settings can still be restored quickly, and the rollback worksheet is current.
