FiveM server administration moved from Keymaster to the Cfx.re Portal when Keymaster’s Assets and Grants pages were deprecated on October 15, 2025. Sign in to the Portal account that owns the server, create or select a server registration key, and put it in server.cfg only if your current configuration needs changing. Granted assets have a separate transfer workflow.
What changed between Keymaster and Portal
Cfx.re deprecated the Assets and Grants pages in Keymaster on October 15, 2025. In its October 14, 2025 announcement, Cfx.re advised users that “if you’re still relying on Keymaster for certain server and/or asset functions, we recommend beginning your transition to Portal as soon as possible.” The Portal is now the current account-management surface for server registration keys and granted assets.
Recommended Free Tools
This is a management migration, not a change to the value your running server reads. A FiveM server still consumes the sv_licenseKey variable from its active server.cfg. The Portal is where you obtain or manage that value; the server continues to load it locally at startup.
| Function | Current location | What you need to do |
|---|---|---|
| Server registration key | Cfx.re Portal | Create or select a key, then place it in the server configuration when required. |
| Runtime license setting | Your server’s server.cfg |
Keep a valid sv_licenseKey entry and restart after an edit. |
| Granted asset ownership | Portal’s Granted Assets page | Transfer each asset separately to the destination Cfx.re username and confirm by email. |
| Old Keymaster Assets and Grants pages | Deprecated October 15, 2025 | Do not use old screenshots or bookmarks as the authoritative workflow. |
What to prepare before changing anything
Most migrations can be completed without replacing a working key. Make a backup and identify the actual deployment path before editing files.

server.cfgdiffer by deployment. - Have access to the email address associated with the Cfx.re account. Asset transfers require confirmation through an email sent by Cfx.re.
- Keep the existing key available until the new configuration has started successfully. Do not delete a working configuration merely because Keymaster is no longer the management surface.
Step-by-step: move a server to Portal
1. Sign in to the owning Portal account
Open the Cfx.re Portal and authenticate with the account that owns the server. If you administer several communities, check the username before creating a key; creating one under another account does not transfer ownership of an existing server or its assets.
Old Keymaster links may still appear in saved documentation, videos, or browser history. They are not a reliable guide to the current labels or navigation. Use the Portal’s server-management area instead.

From the Portal, open the area for server registration keys. The official setup flow is to choose Create a key, enter a display name, generate the key, and copy it. If the account already contains the key you intend to use, select that key rather than generating another one solely because the management page changed.
Use a display name that identifies the server or environment, such as a production or test label. The display name helps you recognize the entry in Portal; it is not the value that goes into server.cfg.
Cfx.re’s setup guide describes this as registering a free license key on the Cfx Portal. The Portal account and the server process remain separate: Portal stores the registration record, while the server process reads the copied value from its local configuration.
3. Decide whether server.cfg needs an edit
Inspect the configuration used by the running instance. In a conventional deployment, the entry has this form:

sv_licenseKey "your-key"
Replace your-key with the value copied from Portal. Preserve the quotation marks and do not add explanatory text to the same line. If the existing server starts normally with its current key, the reviewed Cfx.re instructions do not require every owner to regenerate or replace it. In that case, leave the known-good value in place and complete the account-side migration.
Edit only the configuration that the launch command or control panel actually loads. A common failed migration changes a similarly named file while the server continues to read another copy. If you operate separate test and production instances, verify the active path for each one before saving.
4. Enter the key during a txAdmin deployment
When txAdmin is creating a server from a recipe, the key belongs in the recipe’s Before you begin step. Paste the Portal-created value into that field, select Run Recipe, and finish with Save & Run Server, following the txAdmin guide’s sequence.
Do not paste the display name, the Portal account username, or a browser URL into the key field. The recipe needs the generated license value itself. If you are importing an already configured server rather than creating one with a recipe, edit the active server.cfg instead.

Restart the server after changing the key or its configuration. Watch the startup output rather than assuming that a successful panel restart means the license was accepted. A failed key or malformed configuration normally becomes visible during startup.
- Confirm that the process is using the intended server directory.
- Confirm that the edited file is the active
server.cfg. - Check the spelling and capitalization of
sv_licenseKey. - Check that the copied value is complete and still enclosed in ordinary quotation marks.
- Confirm that the key belongs to the Portal account you used and that no unrelated resource was changed during troubleshooting.
- Restart once more after correcting the specific issue and inspect the new startup output.
How to move granted assets to another Cfx.re account
Asset ownership is separate from server-key configuration. Updating sv_licenseKey does not move scripts, vehicles, maps, or other granted assets between accounts, and transferring an asset does not automatically rewrite any server configuration.

Use this workflow for each asset:
- Sign in to the Portal account that currently owns the asset.
- Open Granted Assets.
- Select the asset you want to move.
- Choose Transfer.
- Enter the destination Cfx.re username.
- Confirm the transfer request through the email Cfx.re sends.
Repeat the process for every asset that should change owners. Keep a record of the destination username and the confirmation message. If an asset remains absent after the transfer request, check that you used the owning account, entered the destination username exactly, and completed the email confirmation before changing server files.
Plan this operation independently from a key change. A server can retain a valid registration key while its granted assets are transferred, and an account can receive an asset without becoming the account whose key is configured on a particular server.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoosing a deployment method after migration
Cfx.re documents Windows, Linux, txAdmin, and game-server hosting providers as supported ways to run a FiveM server. Portal migration does not require buying hardware or a hosting package. Choose the deployment that matches how much control and maintenance you want.
| Deployment route | Control | Operational effort | Migration checks | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Self-managed Windows | Direct control of files, services, ports, and firewall rules. | You maintain artifacts, updates, backups, and restarts. | Locate the active server.cfg, preserve resource and data directories, and restart the Windows service or launch command. |
Administrators comfortable managing a Windows machine directly. |
| Self-managed Linux | Direct control through the shell, service manager, filesystem, and firewall. | You maintain packages, permissions, updates, backups, and process supervision. | Check the service’s working directory and configuration path; confirm the account running the process can read the file. | Operators who want scriptable, hands-on administration. |
| txAdmin | Web-based control over recipes, configuration, and server starts. | The panel simplifies setup, but you still manage keys, resources, data, and access. | Enter the key in Before you begin for a new recipe, or edit the imported server’s active configuration. | New deployments or teams that prefer guided setup and repeatable recipes. |
| Game-server hosting provider | Usually less low-level control, depending on the panel and plan. | The provider may handle machine maintenance, while you manage files and server settings exposed by the panel. | Verify that you can edit server.cfg, retain resource and data directories, and perform a clean restart. |
Teams seeking managed infrastructure rather than hardware administration. |
Compare available options using four practical questions: Can you edit the active configuration? Can you preserve the existing resource and data directories? Can you restart cleanly after a key change? Do the available CPU, RAM, storage, player slots, ports, and firewall controls match the server’s workload? These questions matter more to migration success than the label of the deployment route.

Use the exact variable name
The documented server variable is sv_licenseKey. Similar-looking names, a missing capital letter, or an entry placed in a resource configuration will not satisfy the server’s license setting. Keep the line in the main server.cfg loaded during startup.
Preserve ordinary quoting
The value should be enclosed in straight quotation marks as shown in the example. Rich-text editors can replace them with typographic quotes, and copying through formatted notes can introduce invisible characters. Edit the file in a plain-text editor or the hosting panel’s configuration editor.

Do not confuse labels with secrets
The Portal display name is an administrative label. The generated key is the credential consumed by the server. Store the key as a secret: do not post it in public issue trackers, screenshots, chat rooms, or resource documentation. Give file and panel access only to people who need to operate the server.
Keep the migration reversible
Before editing, copy the original configuration and note the server’s launch command, working directory, and restart method. If the new start fails, restore the backup, restart, and then investigate the Portal account, copied value, or file path one variable at a time.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The Portal does not show the expected key or assets
Check the signed-in username first. Server registration keys and granted assets belong to the account that created or received them. Sign out and back in with the owning account, then revisit the server-key or Granted Assets area. If the goal is an ownership change, use the asset’s Transfer action rather than expecting it to appear in a second account automatically.

The server fails immediately after the edit
Restore the backed-up file if you need to return to the last known-good state. Then verify the active configuration path, the exact sv_licenseKey spelling, complete copying of the key, and straight quotation marks. A panel may expose several configuration files; the one you edited may not be the one loaded by the launch command.
The server starts through txAdmin but the recipe run fails
Return to the recipe’s Before you begin step and make sure the generated Portal value—not the display name or account username—was pasted into the key field. Run the recipe again only after correcting that field. For an existing installation, inspect the resulting server.cfg rather than creating another recipe unnecessarily.
An asset transfer appears incomplete
Asset transfer and license-key configuration are independent. Confirm that the source account selected the correct asset, entered the destination username, and completed the email confirmation from Cfx.re. Do not alter server.cfg as a substitute for completing the ownership request.
An old guide tells you to use Keymaster
Treat the guide as outdated for Assets and Grants management. The October 15, 2025 deprecation date is the relevant cutoff for those pages. Follow the current Portal labels and keep the server-side sv_licenseKey setting only where your deployment requires it.

- Portal account verified as the server or asset owner.
- Current configuration and resource/data directories backed up.
- Server registration key created or selected in Portal.
- Existing working key left unchanged unless a replacement is actually needed.
- Active
server.cfgidentified and edited with the exactsv_licenseKeysyntax when required. - txAdmin recipe key entered in Before you begin for new recipe deployments.
- Server restarted and startup output checked.
- Each granted asset transferred separately through Granted Assets, with email confirmation completed.
- Hosting or infrastructure changes evaluated for configuration access, data preservation, restart control, and networking.
- Key kept private and configuration access limited to operators.
The practical result
After migration, Portal is the place to create or manage the server registration key and to transfer granted assets. The running FiveM server still depends on the value in its active server.cfg. A working key does not need to be regenerated merely because Keymaster’s Assets and Grants pages were deprecated; change the configuration only when you are actually adopting a different key, moving the deployment, or correcting a startup problem.
