The safest way to move a cPanel website to an Ubuntu VPS is to build the new server beside the old one, copy and verify everything, and change DNS only after the Ubuntu site works. A plain VPS will not recreate cPanel automatically: you must install and configure the web server, runtime, database, users, permissions, cron jobs, mail (if used), firewall, backups and TLS yourself. Keep the cPanel server online until the new server has handled real traffic successfully and you have a tested rollback plan.
This guide covers both options: retaining cPanel on the Ubuntu VPS, or rebuilding the site on a standard Ubuntu stack. It includes the inventory, backup, transfer, database, testing, DNS, certificate and rollback steps needed to avoid lost data and unnecessary downtime.
Choose the destination architecture first
Your migration procedure depends on whether the Ubuntu VPS will run cPanel or a conventional manually managed stack. Decide this before copying data, because the required software, licensing, account model and administration responsibilities differ.

Requirements when cPanel remains on the destination
cPanel’s current Ubuntu support is for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. Its 2026 requirements list at least 2 GB of RAM and 20 GB of disk, with 4 GB of RAM and 40 GB of disk recommended for cPanel & WHM. The installation also requires root access, a registered and resolvable fully qualified hostname, and IPv4 connectivity. Confirm these conditions before provisioning; installing on an unsupported image can force a rebuild later.

What “plain Ubuntu” really means
Without cPanel, an Ubuntu image gives you an operating system, not a ready-made hosting account. Ubuntu’s server documentation treats Apache2, nginx, databases, DNS, backups and security as separate administration areas. You must select and configure each service, then reproduce the behavior the application previously received from cPanel.
Map the cPanel account before touching DNS
Create an inventory that another administrator could use to recreate the site. Do not rely only on the document-root folder: important behavior often lives in DNS, cron, database privileges, PHP extensions or application secrets.

- The document root for each hostname, upload and media directories, symbolic links and any files outside the document root that the application reads.
- Redirects, canonical-host rules, rewrite rules and forced-HTTPS behavior.
- PHP or other runtime versions, required extensions, process settings and application-specific modules.
- Database names, users, passwords, character sets, collations, privileges and connection hostnames.
- Environment variables, API keys, webhook endpoints, encryption keys and other secrets. Record where they are used, but store the values securely rather than in a shared checklist.
- All cron entries, scheduled framework commands, queue workers and server-side timers, including their run times and working directories.
- Mailboxes, aliases, forwarding rules, mailing lists, SMTP credentials and MX, SPF, DKIM and DMARC records if the VPS will handle mail.
- DNS records (A, AAAA, CNAME, TXT, MX, SRV and CAA), nameserver ownership and the provider account that can edit them.
- Active TLS certificates, certificate names, renewal method and any certificate pinning or upstream integration.
- Webhooks, payment callbacks, external allowlists, firewall rules and monitoring checks that refer to the old IP address.
Export the inventory to a versioned, access-controlled document. Note the current IP addresses and the time of the last successful backup so you can tell whether a later change is expected.
Back up both data and server state
Plan for two kinds of recovery: restoring the website’s content and reverting the infrastructure change. Take a provider snapshot or full-server image when your VPS provider offers one, then create independent copies of the files, configuration and databases. A cPanel account backup protects data managed by cPanel, but it is not automatically a complete image of programs or unmanaged server state on an Ubuntu machine.
Make and verify the database backup
For MySQL, Ubuntu documents a dump followed by a matching restore:
mysqldump [database name] > dump.sql
mysql [database name] < dump.sqlUse the real database name in place of the bracketed example, and keep the dump outside the web root. Check that the file is readable, has a plausible size, and can be imported into a test database before the cutover. Preserve the database user, privileges, charset and collation information alongside the dump; importing tables without recreating access rights commonly produces an application that loads but cannot write.

Define a rollback trigger
Write down the conditions that will send traffic back to cPanel: for example, failed logins or checkout transactions, persistent server errors, missing mail, or an unrecoverable certificate problem. Keep the old server unchanged and reachable. Rollback is a DNS decision, not a reason to delete the source before caches and application jobs have been observed.
Provision and secure the Ubuntu VPS
- Choose a supported Ubuntu LTS image. Match the CPU, memory and disk to the application, its database and expected logs. If cPanel is the destination, use Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and meet the cPanel requirements described above.
- Create a non-root administrator. Grant it sudo access, install your SSH public key and test a second session before disabling or restricting direct root login.
- Patch the operating system. Apply all available updates and reboot when the kernel or other core packages require it.
- Set identity and networking. Configure a stable hostname (a fully qualified name if required by your control panel), verify the server’s IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, and set the correct time zone and time synchronization.
- Restrict the firewall. Allow SSH from your administration network where practical, and open only the HTTP, HTTPS and other service ports the application actually needs. If the VPS will serve mail, account for its mail ports deliberately rather than opening a broad range.
- Install monitoring and backups. Confirm that disk, memory, CPU, service health and backup failures will be visible before public traffic arrives.
Do not copy the old server’s binaries or package directories wholesale. Install compatible packages on Ubuntu, then transfer application data and configuration in a controlled way.
Recreate the web and application stack
Install the selected web server (Apache or nginx), the exact or a compatible PHP/runtime version, required extensions, the database engine and any queue or cache services the application uses. cPanel’s migration guidance emphasizes matching target software versions; a major PHP or database change can alter behavior even when the files are identical.
Create hosts, users and permissions
For every hostname, create an Apache virtual host or nginx server block with the correct document root. Reproduce redirects, rewrite rules, upload limits, timeouts and canonical-domain logic. Create a dedicated system user or group for the site, assign ownership deliberately, and make only the upload, cache or other required directories writable. Never make the entire document root writable by the web process just to get past a permissions error.
Restore secrets and scheduled work
Place environment files and credentials outside publicly served directories where the application supports it. Recreate cron jobs with the intended user, absolute paths and working directory; then run each command manually once and inspect its log output. Restore queue workers, webhooks and external allowlists, replacing the old IP only where the destination address is authorized.
Plan mail separately
A website transfer does not automatically move mail. If mail stays with the existing provider, preserve its MX and authentication records and test SMTP credentials from the new application. If the VPS will host mail, migrate mailboxes and filtering, reproduce MX, SPF, DKIM and DMARC records, and test inbound and outbound delivery before changing those records. Treat mail as a separate service with its own backup and abuse controls.

Copy website files without losing changes
Use an authenticated transfer over SSH or another encrypted channel. An rsync-style copy is efficient for repeated synchronization:
rsync -a SOURCE_PATH/ USER@NEW_SERVER:DEST_PATH/Replace the uppercase values with the actual source directory, administrator account and destination path. Preserve timestamps and then set ownership and permissions on the Ubuntu side according to the service user you created. Copy hidden files such as environment files only when they are needed, and inspect them for old absolute paths, hostnames and credentials.
Perform an initial copy while the cPanel site remains live. After testing the destination, schedule a short maintenance window or freeze writes, run a final synchronization, and take the final database dump. This sequence prevents uploads, orders, comments or other writes made during the first copy from being overwritten or omitted.
Export, import and reconcile the database
- Put the application into a maintenance or read-only mode if it supports one, or otherwise stop writes for the final export.
- Run the final
mysqldumpand verify that the dump completed without errors. - Create the destination database and user with the intended charset, collation and privileges.
- Run the documented
mysql [database name] < dump.sqlrestore command on Ubuntu. - Update the application’s connection settings and test both reads and writes. Check timestamps, auto-increment behavior, uploaded-file references and any queues or sessions stored in the database.
- Keep the final dump and the previous known-good dump until the migration has been accepted.
If the site uses more than one database, repeat the inventory and restore process for each one. Do not assume a successful web response proves that every background worker or reporting database is connected.
Use cPanel’s supported transfer path only for cPanel-to-cPanel moves
When both servers run cPanel & WHM, the WHM Transfer Tool or an account archive/cpmove restore is the supported route. The replacement cPanel server should contain software versions compatible with the old server, and cPanel’s restore interface accepts an account backup or cpmove archive. Those tools do not turn a plain Ubuntu installation into a cPanel account manager; for a non-cPanel destination, use the stack-rebuild procedure and manually recreate services.
Test the Ubuntu site before public DNS changes
Do not use public DNS as your first test. Point a test workstation’s hosts file at the VPS address, or use a temporary staging hostname that maps to the destination. Test every hostname, including redirects and HTTPS, while normal visitors still reach cPanel.

- HTTP status codes for the home page, representative content pages and expected error pages.
- HTTPS, certificate names, HTTP-to-HTTPS redirects and canonical-host redirects.
- Administrative login, password reset, forms, search, checkout or other critical transactions.
- File uploads, image and media delivery, generated thumbnails and downloads.
- Database reads and writes, sessions, queues, scheduled jobs and webhook callbacks.
- Mail sending and receiving if the migration includes mail or changes application SMTP settings.
- Application, web-server, PHP/runtime, database and system logs for warnings, permission errors and repeated failures.
- Firewall behavior, resource use, disk capacity and backup completion.
Test from more than one network and with both the bare domain and every required subdomain. Fix errors on the destination and repeat the final synchronization if test activity changed data.

Prepare the DNS change
Lower the TTL on records you will change before the maintenance window when practical. Confirm that you can edit the authoritative zone and identify whether the website uses A, AAAA, CNAME or a proxy service. At cutover, update the required records to the VPS address, then query the authoritative nameservers and several public resolvers. DNS caches do not follow a universal, guaranteed propagation timetable, so do not announce a fixed number of minutes for completion.
Leave unrelated records—especially MX, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, verification TXT records and service CNAMEs—unchanged unless your inventory shows that they must move. An accidental MX edit can interrupt mail even when the website itself is healthy.

Let’s Encrypt certificates are free, trusted by major browsers and clients, and valid for 90 days according to current Ubuntu documentation. The domain must resolve to the new server for issuance, and an HTTP-01 challenge requires port 80 to be reachable. After DNS points to Ubuntu, Certbot can configure nginx:
sudo certbot --nginx -d example.com -d www.example.comFor Apache, use the corresponding Apache installer:

sudo certbot renew --dry-runDo not remove the old certificate until the new server has served HTTPS successfully and renewal testing has passed.

Monitor the cutover and keep rollback possible
Watch access and error logs, application transactions, database health, CPU, memory, disk, queues, webhooks and mail after changing DNS. Compare real behavior with the inventory rather than checking only whether the home page loads. Keep cPanel online while DNS caches age and while certificate, email and scheduled-job checks remain clean.
If a serious problem appears, restore the affected DNS records to the old IP, preserve the Ubuntu logs, identify the failing component and repeat the final file and database synchronization. Do not continue accepting writes on both servers without a deliberate conflict-resolution plan. Once the observation period is complete and backups are verified, decommission the cPanel server only after documenting the final DNS state.
Troubleshoot common migration failures
“502 Bad Gateway” or a blank PHP response
Check that the installed runtime version and extensions match the application’s requirements, that the PHP process is running, and that the web server points to the correct socket or upstream. Review runtime and web-server logs before changing permissions.
“403 Forbidden” or uploads fail
Inspect ownership of the document root and writable directories, parent-directory traversal permissions, and the web-server security rules. Grant write access only to directories that need it, then retry an upload while watching the logs.

Verify the destination database name, user, password, host, charset, collation and privileges. A successful read does not prove that INSERT, UPDATE or file-backed session operations work.
Only some domains work
Check that every virtual host/server block exists, that its DNS record points to the new address, and that the TLS certificate includes the hostname. Test the bare domain, www and each subdomain independently.
HTTPS issuance fails
Confirm that DNS already resolves to Ubuntu, port 80 is reachable from the internet, the firewall permits the challenge, and no redirect or proxy blocks the HTTP-01 request. Correct the DNS or firewall issue, then rerun Certbot.
Visitors see old content after the switch
Different resolvers and browsers may retain cached answers for different periods. Query authoritative nameservers and multiple public resolvers, and keep the old server available. Do not delete the source merely because one network shows the new address.
